DESCRIPTION

This work is a contribution to the practically nonexistent genre. It deals with the process of designing books from the designer's point of view, and provides essays on writing, reading, bibliophila, books and bookshelves. However, it also works as a practical guide useful when designing novels and fiction, poetry books and scholarly publications as well. It contains chapters on the factors that usually remain hidden to the reader (if done professionally). The work focuses on readibility, choosing materials and even minor typographical details, significantly affecting the undestanding of the typeset text.

Souvislosti 4/2011

Dovedu si představit, že bych si Pecinovu knížku zařadil do knihovny a nějakou dobu se na ni prostě jenom díval. Čistota a jednoduchost vyplývá z dobře rozmyšlené koncepce a z pečlivého zpracování detailů.Miloš Makovský: Kniha o knize aneb Kdo vysází příští H_aluzi? H_aluze 16/2011

Duha

Spojení učební pomůcky, netradičního zamyšlení nad jedním specifickým oborem a výtečně napsané eseje o současné společnosti nebývá časté. Recenze

In our opinion Martin Pecina’s Books and Typography is the most professionally-designed graduate project. Small wonder: Pecina is a professional graphic designer, an animator of design events in the Czech Republic, a splendid typographer and a poet. We very much liked the topic of this work. Pecina has put his own articles on book design into a publication. This confirms the thesis that the 21st-century designer is a critic, editor, graphic designer, and producer rolled into in one. We recommend this project to anyone interested in the art of the book.2+3D magazine’s choice: Best Graduation Projects 2010/2011. Typo 47

Pecina’s knowledge of the filed is without a doubt, his portfolio shows it clearly. But the typographic rules, which he presents in the second section of the book are not understood as a strict code, but as a result of measuring the traditions and experiences from their own with the continuous consideration of the new trends. Jakub Krč: Manifest neviditelnosti. Souvislosti 4/2011

I can imagine myself putting Pecina’s book into the shelf and just look at it for some time. Purity and simplicity results from the reflection of the well considered concept and careful treatment with detail.Miloš Makovský: Kniha o knize aneb Kdo vysází příští H_aluzi? H_aluze 16/2011

Martin Pecina is experienced book designer and his works speaks for themselves. His creations are consistent and modest, elated to the content of a book. Pecina knows the historical context and respects the tradition, but he is not afraid to cross the boundaries and stays open for experiments.Pavel Kotrla: Když typograf umí psát. Duha

Combination of a handbook full of innovative thoughts and well written essays on contemporary society is not very common. However, typographer Martin Pecina has written and beautifuly designed that sort of book. Every other department of a human activity would deserve similar publication.Stanislav Šulc: Gutenbergovi by se Kindle asi nelíbil, míní typograf. E15

Young book designer, who took the first and the third place from The most beautiful Czech books of 2010. The book itself is beautiful and unique in Czech environment (unusual papers, new fonts, unique point of view!). Pecina neatly summarizes everything that the we know from his essays published in the literautre magazine Host, Typo revue, his own site. And adds even much more. This is a book written with love and without hesitation.Kateřina Kadlecová: Typografové, zbystřit! Reflex 27/2011
