GRAND KNIGHT’S COMMENTS – Jeff Fry [email protected]

Ringing in a new year always presents new challenges and possibilities. There is obviously an opportunity to reflect back and assess the accomplishments and shortcomings of the previous year. We as Knights are presented with this time for reflection as well. This has been a challenging, yet successful year for our council. Many of our brothers and their families have encountered health crises that have been met with determination and prayer. I am amazed by the humility and strength exemplified by many of our brothers and their wives and the incredible examples they are setting.

In the past year, our Council has earned a second Star Council award, due to the thousands of hours of service shared by members of Council 14111 and their families. The bar has been set high, and work must be done to maintain that excellence. We are fortunate to have had many new members join our council in the past year, bringing with them new enthusiasm and dedication to service.

My personal New Year’s Resolution is to become a better leader and to help the Council continue to improve. My resolution for the council is to use this opportunity to think of ways that we can collectively work to better serve our council, parish, and community.

Fifth Sunday Rosary was December 31st at 7:35 AM. We had a good turnout; over 25 Knights and

wives! Members sat throughout the church to encourage others to join in, and they did! Many of

the members and their wives went out for breakfast after Mass. Thank you, Deacon Bob, for

leading the Rosary.

“Coats for Kids” Our children’s coats have arrived from Supreme and we have already distributed a number of them to needy

children. If you know of a family that could use “a little help” with kids’ coats this

winter season, contact GK Jeff Fry at the number listed above. After all parish

requests have been filled we will donate coats to Common Threads Clothes Closet in

Barberton and Marian’s Closet in Wadsworth for distribution to the needy of the area.

We will also reserve a few coats to be used in event of parish “emergencies.”

Psalms

When Steve Jobs died, he arrived at the pearly gates and was greeted by St. Peter. Steve asked to be let into heaven. St.

Peter began looking through his book, trying to find Steve's name. At first St. Peter looked for Steve's name by the date of

his arrival - no luck. So, then St. Peter looked for his name alphabetically - no luck. Finally, St. Peter said to Steve, "I'm

sorry, but I'm having a little trouble finding your name". Steve replied," I can find it". He pulled his iphone out of his

pocket and found his name on St. Peter's list immediately. St. Peter asked him, "How could you find your name so

quickly?" Steve explained, "There's an app for that!"

Are you sick? Are you joyful? Are you grateful? Are you scared? Are you longing for God? The answer to these

questions is: there's a Psalm for that! Psalms are more than filler between the 1st and 2

nd readings at Sunday Mass or

between the reading and the gospel in a weekday Mass or the morning, midday or evening prayers in the breviary.

Psalms are beautiful. Some are long and some are short. Some are full of love, sorrow, joy, thanksgiving. And much more.

They are for all of us! Many holy authors over a number of years composed the masterpiece of prayers known as the

Psalms. These incomparable prayers nourished the people both personally and communally. They embraced every age of

history, while being rooted in each moment of time. The Psalms formed the basis of the prayers that Jesus prayed and can

be used to draw us into his prayer as well.

Try to take time to pray a Psalm that pertains to a situation in your life and you will be praying the very prayer that Jesus

prayed while he was on earth. There are 150 of them in the bible.

“Member Spotlight” This month: Bill McKinnon

Bill and Carol McKinnon live in Doylestown. Bill has a daughter, two stepchildren, and four

step-grandchildren. He retired from Roadway/YRC after 43 years of service. Retirement for Bill

meant more time to persue his interests in outdoors activities. Bill and Carol love to fish and they

are beekeepers. Bill has been active in the Summit County Beekeepers Association. Bill sells

honey and many Knights have enjoyed it.

Bill started his Knights experience at St. Joseph church in Mantua. He joined to become more

active in church activities. He became a founding member of Prince of Peace council in 2006. During the years

at our council he has held the offices of Advocate, Trustee, and Treasurer. Bill has always been involved in

planning and execution of our many programs. He and Carol both participate in the pancake breakfast, Trunk-r-

Treat, Egg Hunt, and the Sandwich Project, to mention a few. Bill served as “Coats for Kids” chairman for

several years. He has volunteered to work at all the parish functions as well as Knights’ programs.

Bill and Carol attend the 8:00 A.M. Sunday Mass and enjoy spending time with church friends to share meals

together. The 8:00 Mass has a group of friends, mostly Knights and wives, who go out for breakfast after Mass

most Sundays. Numbering as many as 18 people, the group breakfast is a major social activity where food and

fraternity abound! Something you may have not known about Bill is that he was a massage therapist for 12

years.

Bill is an important member of the council whose membership has been valued. We thank him for his

service.
