Reflections on Council 10561 25 Years of Columbianism

Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has.

- Margaret Mead

Looking back over the past 25 years, one might ask “where did the time

go?” For those who were present on the night our council received its charter, October 25th, 1991 may seem, at least in some ways, like yesterday. Since then, the 30 members who joined together to form Council 10561, have grown to 139 members. Though today, a number of those original members have passed on, their work and influence within our council remains evident, and is an integral part of our history and success, in living out Fr. McGivney’s vision. Just a quick look at the various organizations our council has donated to, or the myriad of programs which have appeared on the annual program outline presented by the executive at the start of each year, illustrates just how active our members are, as well as the diversity of programs and causes our council has been involved in. Since our council’s inception, we have been recognized by Supreme Council on a number of occasions for our work through their award programs, which recognize membership and program achievements; activities; as well as active participation in parish, council, family, youth, and culture of life programs, and many others. Most recently, this past fall, District Deputy Don Highley presented the council with the Star Council award, which recognizes outstanding achievement in membership, insurance and service program activities. Some of the programs which have been unique to our council include involvement in L’Arche, Mount Hope Outreach, sponsorship and active support of students’ participation in the Voyageur Wilderness Programme, the seniors bus outreach program, as well as coordinating a five year program to raise money for musical education within our Catholic high schools. As we reflect on our council’s role in serving the vision of our founder, it is clear that there is much that we can celebrate & be proud of.

A Letter From The Grand Knight

Bro. Chuck Lutchin

Dear Brother Knights,

On this our 25th Anniversary, we as a council have achieved another milestone. As Grand Knight, I am pleased to extend my sincere congratulations to all our members.

On October 25, 1991 I became a charter member of this council and at that time, I was not aware of how fortunate I was to join such a rewarding organization. This fraternal group has lead me to be involved with a number of families who have become friends and have provided great support in good times and bad.

Over the past 25 years the Lord has taken 42 of our members, many of whom we remember fondly for their dedicated involvement in our council, and enthusiasm for the principles of our order. At our Charter night in 1991, we started with 65 members, and to date our membership has grown to 139 members. To do this it shows that we have been blessed with strong leadership especially from our Grand Knights and our Chaplains, as well as to those members who have tirelessly taken on the mantle of spreading Columbianism within our parish, and growing our membership. This leadership and support by our executive, and many of our committee chairmen have lead to the success of this great council. To achieve this success we must also remember the support and contribution that is given by our wives. The work of our council and its members has always been in support of our first parish, St Pius X, and now Holy family Parish, which we will continue to do.

I would be remiss if I didn’t give a special thanks to our Anniversary committee for all their hard work on planning this great evening.

Each of you should be very proud of your hard work and dedication which has contributed in making tonight’s event happen.

Fraternally Yours,

Chuck Lutchin Grand Knight St. Pius X Council 10561 serving Holy Family Parish

Prayer for the Canonization of Fr. McGivney

God, our Father, protector of the poor and defender

of the widow and orphan, you called your priest, Father Michael J. McGivney, to be an apostle of Christian family life and to lead the young to the

generous service of their neighbor.

Through the example of his life and virtue may we follow your Son, Jesus Christ, more closely,

fulfilling his commandment of charity and building up his Body which is the Church.

Let the inspiration of your

servant prompt us to greater confidence in your

love so that we may continue his work

of caring for the needy and the outcast.

We humbly ask

that you glorify your venerable servant

Father Michael J. McGivney, on earth, according to the design of your holy will.

Through his intercession, grant the favor I now present

(here make your request). Through Christ our Lord.

Amen

A Letter From The Pastor & Chaplain Fr. Robert Remark

Dear and Sir Knight, Chuck Lutchin, and Worthy

Knights of Council 10561, I am pleased to join countless others in offering a word of heartfelt congratulations to you and to the members of Council 10561 of the Knights of

Columbus, which makes Holy Family Parish its home, on the occasion of their 25th anniversary. most of the Charter members continue to serve as active members of this esteemed group of Catholic gentlemen. For twenty-five years, the Council 10561 members have humbly and faithfully served the needs of our community, in reaching out to the disadvantaged, to the parish community, and to their own members and their families. I am honoured to be counted among their number. As a parish, we offer God thanks and praise for the gift of the Christian witness rendered by these men across twenty-five years. We beg the Lord to bless, and Our Blessed Mother to intercede, on their behalf as they begin the next twenty-five. In your service, I remain gratefully yours in the Lord,

Reverend Robert J. Remark Pastor Holy Family Parish

A Letter From The Bishop Most Rev. Ronald P. Fabbro, C.S. B.

Dear Brother Knights,

It is a privilege for me, along with Auxiliary Bishop Joseph Dabrowski, to offer my congratulations and best wishes as you celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the St. Pius X Knights of Columbus Council 15061. We would like to take this opportunity to unite with you

in prayer that the Holy Spirit will continue to strengthen the Knights of Columbus in your witness to the Gospel in our society. We offer to you our profound gratitude for all that you do for the diocese and for Canada. Your deep faith and love for God are evident through the many charitable ways in which you serve your community. Your strong commitment to justice is evident through your abounding and fruitful good works. We pray that you will remain true to the founding principles of the Knights of Columbus, and continue in the tradition of excellence established through 25 years of dedicated service. May God through the intercession of Venerable Michael McGivney continue to bless the works of the Knights of Columbus. Sincerely yours in Christ,

Most Rev. Ronald P. Fabbro, C.S.B. Bishop of London

Our Founder & History Fr. Michael J. McGivney

Fr. Michael J. McGivney was born in 1852, in

Waterbury, Connecticut. Following his preparatory studies in Philosophy, he attended the St. Mary’s Seminary in 1873, in Montreal, celebrating his ordination four years later, and his first Mass at St.

Mary’s Church in New Haven Connecticut, which would become the birthplace of the Knights of Columbus. Through the Knights of Columbus, Father McGivney gave Catholic laymen a new opportunity – the chance to grow in holiness while contributing to their parishes, communities and security of their families. Wherever they exist, Knights continue the tradition of support for bishops and parish priests exemplified by Father McGivney. In 1997, the Vatican opened the cause for exploration into the prospect of bestowing sainthood upon Fr. McGivney in recognition of the global affect his work had on strengthening the Catholic family, and highlighting the importance of charity, unity, fraternity and patriotism, the four principles of the Knights of Columbus, among men and families in the Catholic church. In 2008, Fr. McGivney was given the title “Venerable Servant of God” by Pope Benedict XVI, affording him the title of Blessed, a first step toward sainthood, and a testament to the importance of his work and of the influence of the Knights of Columbus, to Catholicism everywhere. A second miracle was reported in January 2012, and is under investigation. If approved, Fr. McGivney would be beatified, and then eligible for canonization, and reception of a feast day in the liturgical calendar. As Brother Knights, both within our council and in councils around the world, we look forward to the day that we may celebrate his being welcomed among the many holy men & women that shape and guide us in our Catholic faith.

In Honour of Those Who Have Led Many of our brother knights have become iconic figures in our council, through their efforts to promote membership, incorporate the youth of the parish, spearhead various

fundraising activities or community programs, or provide opportunities to build fraternity. At the helm of these

efforts, our Grand Knights, guided by the principles of the order, have committed themselves to building our council to become a strong vibrant Catholic fraternity. We thank them for their dedication and service to our council & to

promoting the work of the Knights of Columbus.

Many of us have seen this expression on a pamphlet, or perhaps in a video, reminding us of the importance of keeping our membership strong, by recruiting a new member to our order. Looking through the pictures here, and reminiscing tonight about what we have accomplished over the past 25 years brings us a great opportunity to remind ourselves of why we joined the Knights of Columbus. Building on that, it is up to us to do for others what was done for us, in inviting them to consider membership in our order. On the following page, you will find a prospect card. The actual card, as well as a membership form, can be obtained from the Membership Chairman, or any executive. You may already have a gentleman in mind who you think would be a good candidate to join our council, or perhaps you are already active in your recruiting efforts. Either way, we must remind ourselves that the key to a strong council is the continued growth its membership.

A Letter From The District Deputy

Bro. Don Highley

My Brother Knights – I have been reflecting back over

the past 25 years when I first joined the Knights of Columbus and became a member of St. Pius X Council. This was one of the smartest “career moves” that I ever made. Prior to 1991, I had been asked by many people to join the Knights, but I was not ready and besides, a lot of my spare time was used up with other organizations.

Then Father Murray Sample decided that he wanted a K of C Council in his Parish and I knew that the time was now right for me to join. There was this feeling that we (the Charter members) were being called to serve the Church and the community in a special way first espoused by our Founder, Father Michael J. McGivney. I have seen our Council grow from its infancy and witnessed how it has flourished over the years under the leadership of the Grand Knights, Chaplains, executive members and progamme directors. This Council has remained strong and vibrant and can proudly boast of its many accomplishments that are achieved through a variety of programmes and activities. We are slowly witnessing a change as new and younger members are joining and I know that the Council is in good hands for many years to come. May you continue to serve your Parish and your community in acts of Charity, Unity and Fraternity. Give freely of your time, talent and treasure. I am positive that your faith will grow stronger and that you will experience a greater bonding and love with your family of brothers, your Parish family and most importantly, your own family at home. Vivat Jesus

Don Highley District Deputy, District 49

A Letter From The Supreme Knight

Bro. Carl Anderson

Worthy Grand Knight & dear Brother Lutchin:

On behalf of my fellow Supreme Officers and Supreme Directors, I am very pleased to extend congratulations and best wishes to you and to all the Knights and family members of St. Pius X Council 10561 on the joyous occasion of the council's 25th anniversary.

Since 1991, Council 10561 has been a beacon of Columbianism in London, fulfilling the vision of our founder, the Venerable Servant of God Father Michael J. McGivney, through service to the Church and to its community. Indeed, there is much to celebrate as you reflect upon the council's rich history. Additionally, let us recognize that this anniversary also provides an opportunity for council members to rededicate themselves to the Order's principles of Charity, Unity, Fraternity and Patriotism, to assure that these same principles will continue to animate the council in the coming years. While I regret that I am unable to join you for this celebration, please know that I am with you in spirit as I extend these best wishes. Fraternally

Our Charitable Works Throughout 25 Years

As all Brother Knights know, the first principle of our order is Charity, a principle which evolved out of the early days of the Knights of Columbus, as a direct result of Fr. McGivney’s vision of the order as a fraternal and mutual aid society, providing financial assistance to widows and Orphans in the event of an untimely death of the family patriarch. Over the past 134 years worldwide, and the past 25 years within our council, that same focus of fraternal, social, and community works of charity continue. Between 2000 and 2015 alone, Council 10561 contributed to the following charities:

St Peters Seminary RSVP program Euthanasia Coalition

St Mary's High School March for Life 7 different High Schools Band competitions

Down Syndrome Association London Area Right to Life

Arthritis Society Holy Family World Youth Day Euthanasia Prevention Coalition St Thomas Aquinas March for Life Holy Family Building Campaign

L'Arche Association London Abused Women's Centre St Joseph Hospitality Centre London Diabetes Association

Notre Dame School Holy Family Parish Cor Group

Pennies for Heaven Philippines Typhoon Disaster

Canadian Wheelchair Foundation Midland Martyr Shrine Coats for Kids Program Special Olympics Food Bank

Holy Family Youth Ministry Holy Family Defibrillator Youth Leadership Camp

Pig Palooza

Through the hard work of our members and their families, our council has donated almost $60,000 to these charities, over the last five years alone. In addition, since October 2013 alone, our involvement with the London Area Food Bank has generated the return of 4,157 bags of donations returned with and estimated weight of 31,094 lbs and a value, as assigned by the Canadian Food Council, of $79,832.60.

In addition to financial contributions, through both council sponsored and private efforts, members have contributed innumerable hours of volunteer service to many of these organizations.

These successes are a constant reminder that the work we do together can make a difference both in our local and global communities.

On behalf of the Building Community Campaign, Congratulations to the Knights of Columbus for their 25 years of service to the community where they have raised funds to help

many people and organizations.

To the Knights of Columbus of

St. Pius X Council 10561:

Congratulations on the completion of 25 years of service to the Holy Family

parish community. The Knights are an integral part of the operation of our parish.

There are many areas where the Knights are involved such as regular Friday dinners, Valentine’s Day breakfast, building projects, significant involvement in the organization of the Pig Palooza celebration, helping with the preparation of seniors dinners and with Sunday bus transportation, as well as providing assistance in many other activities.

The parish is also very grateful for your contribution of funds to the building community campaign and to various ministries at the parish.

Thank you for all the support that you provide to our parish and I wish you continued success in achieving your goals and objectives.
