I LOVE A PIANO at BROADWAY PALM DINNER THEATREThrough July 3rd 2010

I Love A Piano is a nostalgic musical journey spanning seven decades of

American history as seen through the eyes of Irving Berlin. This spectacular new show includes timeless classics such as White Christmas, God Bless America, Puttin’ On The Ritz, and There’s No Business Like Show Business. Visit www.broadwaypalmwest.com for more information.

After studying classical piano for seven years in his German homeland, a 13-year-old Kaeshammer (pronounced “case-hammer”) discovered boogie-woogie as played by Albert Ammons, Meade Lux Lewis, Pete Johnson, and Pinetop Smith. In three years, the teen wunderkind was playing boogie-woogie piano in clubs, concerts, and festivals all over Germany. He attracted attention almost immediately after the family moved to the west coast of Canada, turning heads at performances at blues and jazz festivals during the summer of 1996. His fi rst three recordings, Blue Keys (1996), Tell You

How I Feel (1998), and No Strings Attached (2000), showed increasing maturity and artistic evolution.

This Canadian pianist combines boogie-woogie virtuosity, vocal ability and charisma for an evening of cool jazz and rock and roll. Kaeshammer released his latest record, “Lovelight,” in 2009. The joint gets jumpin’ with the next generation of stride and boogie-woogie piano.

Infusing the powerful rhythms of ensemble Japanese drumming with elements of hip-hop, rock, and electronica, On Ensemble’s unique sound has been praised as “completely original and brilliantly con-ceived.” The group’s four members are individually recognized as leading artists in their fi eld and are sought after as teachers, workshop leaders, composers, and performers. In the 1890s movie theaters were non-existent, movies were usually shown between acts at live stage shows. A man in Pittsburgh, PA took over an empty store, put in 90 + seats, a screen, and a piano, and opened the first real movie theater in America. It was called the Nickelodeon, since it cost only a nickel to enter. The first movie shown there was ‘The Great Train Robbery’ (1905)!

Silver Screen Scoop!

By Joseph J. Airdo

Several projects based on “The Wizard of Oz” are currently in development, including an animated musical featuring the voice of Lea Michele (“Glee”); a dark and twisted take from Todd MacFarlane (“Spawn”) and Josh Olson (“A History of Violence”); an adaptation penned by Darren Lemke (“Shrek Forever After”); a sequel directed by Drew Barrymore (“Whip It”); and a prequel starring Robert Downey Jr. (“Sherlock Holmes”).

Though a fourth feature-length installment seems unlikely, the “Toy Story” characters will return to the big screen again next summer in a short film set to run before “Cars 2.”

Leonardo DiCaprio (“Shutter Island”) in 2012 will portray J. Edgar “Hoover” in a biopic written by Dustin Lance Black (“Milk”) and directed by Clint Eastwood (“Invictus”).

Joseph J. Airdo’s movie reviews and articles are available at Examiner.com/Phoenix in the Arts & Entertainment section.

Please Watch, Then Exit Through the Gift Shop By Randy Montgomery In September 2006, Disneyland guests found a surprise waiting for them in the bushes near Big Thunder Mountain Railroad; a blow-up Guantanamo Bay prisoner. Disney officials were just as surprised as the gusts were to find the orange jumpsuit wearing, bagged head, handcuffed prisoner there. The culprit was Banksy, an internationally known graffiti street artist whose work surpasses simple tagging. Often political in nature, his work (sometimes larger than life) is always controversial. Banksy directs the new documentary Exit Through The Gift Shop, which focuses on the wannabe filmmaker/artist Thierry Guetta. The film has come under scrutiny

as to the validity of the story. Some claim the whole thing is nothing but another work and statement from the artist, others believe what they see if a true. Either way, the documentary has received critical praise. The focus of the film is not Banksy, rather an odd, self-expressive Frenchman living in Los Angeles named Thierry Guetta who decided to start filming street artists after becoming obsessed with “Invader,” another well known graffiti artist. After becoming accepted by several other artists, Guetta started accompanying his idols around the world filming their every move. He ended up with boxes upon boxes of videotapes. After getting permission from and meeting Banksy, he was persuaded to give up filming and become and artist himself. That is when Guetta became his alter-ego; “Mr. Brainwash.”Exit Though the Gift Shop follows Guetta through his quest to become a filmmaker to his eventual gallery show opening in Los Angeles that attracted thousands and a whole lot of media attention. One of the best documentaries of the year, Exit Through the Gift Shop is fascinating for several reasons. Watching Guetta’s obsessive behavior is interesting enough, but watching street artists create their work is even more so. Some may call it destruction of property, but you have to admire their skill and creativity. But what’s even more

fascinating is Guetta’s overnight stardom; be it created and facilitated by Banksy or not. His fame is a statement on how the public will flock to and follow anyone.

‘Micmacs’ Review by Joseph J. Airdo

In “Micmacs,” French filmmaker Jean-Pierre Jeunet demonstrates that he has a creative cinematic eye unlike any other.

The comedy tells the story of Bazil (Dany Boon), a man who enlists a motley crew of junkyard dealers to exact revenge on a pair of weapons manufacturers that put a bullet in his brain and killed his father.

Jeunet takes a serious subject and ventures into whimsical territory, occasionally utilizing an old-fashioned silent film technique in order to propel his characters to the next plot point. Such moments are truly transfixing.

On the other hand, Jeunet’s storytelling feels rushed, as if the filmmaker is impatient to arrive at the movie’s visual core. A lack of character development discourages the audience from becoming emotionally involved.

Yet, Jeunet’s unrivaled visual talents Get the free mobile app athttp:/ /gettag.mobi

Review by Stan Robinson

What happens when you pair an action actor known for his character of Ethan Hunt in the “Mission Impossible” franchise and an actress known for her action character of Natalie Cook in the “Charlie’s Angels” movies? One heck of a ride with a lot of heart in ‘Knight and Day’!

In this action adventure thriller, June Havens (Cameron Diaz) finds her everyday life abruptly changed when her path crosses that of a secret agent (Tom Cruise). In the course of carrying out his latest mission, to protect the creator of a ‘super battery’ with infinite power life, agent Roy Miller realizes he isn’t supposed to survive. As the plot thickens, he has to go ‘rogue’ with only his instincts and training to survive. And June,

drawn into the unfamiliar world of ‘spys and counter spys’, soon realizes that the stranger she just met is her best option of staying alive.

“Knight and Day” has spectacular stunts, great chemistry between Cruise and Diaz, and hilarious comedic sequences to loosen up the dramatic overall theme. My favorite exchange, Roy and June are trapped in a crowded dinner. Roy draws his gun and fakes the hostage taking of June, yells out, ‘Nobody moves or I’ll kill myself and then the girl’ as they exit the dinner!

“Knight and Day” Starring Tom Cruise, Cameron Diaz, Peter Sarsgaard, Jordi Mollà, Viola Davis, Paul Dano, Falk Hentschel, and Marc Blucas.

Directed by James Mangold. Written by Patrick O’Neill. Written by Brian Koppelman. Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation release. Rated

PG-13 for sequences of action violence throughout, and brief strong language. Runtime: 110 minutes.

A Refreshing Use for Spent Wine Bottles

by Chef Rachel Albert, The Healthy Cooking Coach

Looking for for interesting, useful, attractive, and durable eco-friendly products? Through his company Refresh Glass, valley resident Ray Delmuro turns empty wine bottles into attractive and durable drinking glasses, vases, tooth brush and pencil holders, and customized gifts for graduations, birthdays, anniversaries, wedding parties, oand promotional products.

Refresh Glass started with the idea of combining manufacturing, engineering, and art to craft a fun product that makes a difference in the world. In 2008 Ray received a small bottle cutting kit in the mail. Over time Ray evolved to using torches and industrial ovens to

modify preexisting wine bottlesto stress relieve them, making them as durable as possible. His hobby has turned into a fl ourishing business. His company donates $0.50 from every Refresh Glass set purchased to an environmental education charity.

To see Ray’s Refreshed Glass visit the Phoenix Public Market on Saturday mornings (721 N. Central Ave., SE Corner of Central Ave. & McKinley St. , 2 blocks south of Roosevelt) between 8 am and 1 pm or visit Whole Foods Markets throughout Arizona. Eventually his company will have regional and national distribution through the natural foods chain. If you have wine bottles you would like to give him, you can drop them off at Whole Foods Markets. Tell the cashier they’re for Refresh Glass. You can even write that on the bag when you drop it off.

To learn more about Refresh Glass and Ray’s functional bottle art, you can visit his web site, www.RefreshGlass.com

This week’s column might be a bit of a stretch but what the heck. I saw a movie last night called “Fast Food Nation” and it left quite an impression. I don’t recommend it unless you have a clear conscious, are open-minded, posses apolitical views and have a strong stomach. Yes, it does give good reason to eat organic but there is so much more involved in this documentary-style-but-really-a-movie-with-big-stars production.

You’ll get hit on all fronts with this one - illegal immigration, evil big business practices, HR violations, disgusting meat production clips and assorted mini-plots to keep it entertaining. Bottom line - change needs to be made on a broad, encompassing basis, with organic practices leading the way. That’s my take anyways - see if you can stomach this fi lm enough to gain a view on the benefi ts of going organic. - MO

Lady Jasmine Cigar DivaLABEL ON OR OFF?That is a long standing debate that has no clear end in sight. Leaving it on allows people to see what you’re smoking (Oh! I see you smoke Don Collins, have you another ?). Removing the label takes a little practice. They are glued on, and you don’t want to tear the wrapper. You should smoke the cigar a bit to warm it up, then carefully remove the band. It’s ultimately up to you darling, choose wisely.

PIZZA TRIVIAIn the United States, pepperoni is the most popular topping, with over 30% of all pizzas having pepperoni at least as part of the toppings. Worldwide, it is a differ-ent story. According to Domino’s, some of the more popular interna-tional toppings are pickled ginger, minced mutton and tofu in India, squid and Mayou Jaga (mayon-naise, potato and bacon) in Japan, and green peas in Brazil. In Rus-sia, they serve pizza covered with mockba, which is a combination of sardines, tuna, mackerel, salmon and onions. In France, a popular combo is called the Flambee, with bacon, onion and fresh cream.

BEER! SECTIO

NFirst up is Left Hand Brewing. Known in Arizona primarily for their outstanding Milk Stout (and if you have never had a pint or two of that

poured with nitrogen, look for it around Phoenix…it’s a special treat), all of their beers shine in their home state. The tasting room is friendly and inviting and there are always some unique beers available. Just a few minutes away is Oskar Blues, the folks who started what they call

the Canned Beer Apocalypse. This canning only brewery is wide open and spacious and the canning line can be watched from their tasting room, called The Tasty Weasel. There are usually some specialties available such as barrel aged Mama’s Little Yella Pils. If you still haven’t had your fi ll or you’re just ready for a meal, right around the corner is their new restaurant Home Made Liquids and Solids. You will recognize it by the huge Dale’s Pale Ale can out front. Inside, there are 43 craft taps, Southern Barbecue and the great music that Oskar Blues is famous for. “It’s like the Big Muddy fl owing through the Rocky Mountains,” says founder Dale Katechis. After your meal, jump on the Diagonal Highway to Boulder where more great beer awaits.

Before you fi nd the beer in Boulder, make your fi rst stop at Redstone Meadery on Pearl Street, just off Foothills Parkway. Mead is a different beverage and the folks at Redstone do it well. Using honey as

After taking a vacation last week from our Summer Travel Series, we’re back to fi nish it up right. As you will recall, our previous travel adventures took us to San Diego and San Francisco where we found great breweries and world class beer bars. This week we are going to leave California and head to another great summer get-away location, Colorado. It’s a big state, so let’s get started.

Four Corners is a unique spot in the United States as it is the only place where four states border each other. Of those, Colorado is to the Northeast. As you drive across the border, you can be headed for only one place, Durango. This seemingly quiet town of approximately 15,000 people is home to no less than four breweries from the tiny Carver to the nationally distributed SKA Brewing. All of them make good beer, but SKA is the brewery worthy of the tour. Having moved to a new home just a couple of years ago, the folks at SKA are more than proud to show it off. Stop by their tasting room and enjoy some of their classic beers like Pinstripe or Decadent; or, even better, try some of the smaller production beers that are limited to Durango…the Local Series, as they

call it. Don’t miss Carver, located on Main Avenue. While the brewery is small, the beer is tasty and they make one of the best breakfasts in town…so it seems you will actually need to make two visits to Carver Brewing, one for breakfast and one for beer. Finally, no visit to Durango would be complete without a trip to Lady Falconburgh’s Barley Exchange, also on Main Avenue. The Lady has 38 beers on tap, a lively crowd, fun bartenders and an enjoyable take on bar food. Finally, a trip out Highway 550 brings you to the Olde Schoolhouse Café. A small, hole-in-the-wall bar with great pizza and a limited selection of beer. But it is the fi rst bar to ever put SKA Brewing on tap and the original, very uniquely designed tap handles are still in use. Enjoy the atmosphere, shoot some pool and watch the regulars fi lter in and out. In the winter, it’s also great après ski.

Time to head to the Front Range, we’ll start our trip in Fort Collins to the north. A wonderful town which has been named as one of Forbes Magazine’s “Best Places to Live” on several recent occasions. Colorado State University is also located here, but it’s the beer scene we want to talk about. If Colorado is the Napa Valley of Beer as they claim,

Fort Collins may very well be at the center of it. The most well known of the six breweries headquartered here is New Belgium. Founded on a bicycle seat is their motto and their fl agship beer, Fat Tire, refl ects that. New Belgium is more than Fat Tire, and every beer has its own story…make sure you take the time to learn them all. The tour starts and ends in the Liquid Center where you will certainly enjoy some of their fi ne offerings. Throughout the buildings you come to understand New Belgium’s dedication to quality, as well as having fun. And if you ever forget, a short trip down the sliding board from the offi ces to the tasting room will remind you to Follow Your

Folly which is the brewery’s slogan. A short bike ride from the brewery brings you to College Avenue, which is where the nightlife happens in town. Our suggestion is to hit up Choice City Butcher Shop at Olive Street. Outstanding sandwiches, a dozen taps and an interesting selection of bottle selections makes this our number one choice for beer drinking in town. There are plenty of other fi ne locations as well, The Tap Room, Lucky Joe’s The Crown Room and The Pickle Barrel all get high marks.

Forty miles south on Interstate 25 brings you to Longmont, where you can tour two excellent breweries.

the primary fermentable, the meads at Redstone range from sweet and fruity to dry with a hint of hops. Meet the owners, David and Madoka, who are good people and fascinating to spend time with. Five more minutes from Redstone brings you to a real gem, Avery Brewing. Run by Adam Avery, this brewery is located in an industrial park and if it looks like it was assemble piece meal, it was. Taking advantage of whatever space was available, Avery brewing has had to get creative about its design. No matter, the tasting room is easy to fi nd and, once again, always full of special beers not typically available. There are plenty of other fi ne breweries in town to explore, Mountain Sun and Twisted Pine to name a couple. You can certainly spend a couple of days exploring the beer scene in Boulder.

As you leave Boulder, get on Highway 36 and the crown jewel of beer in Colorado approaches. Denver is the hub for the beer scene in this state and you will need several days here to enjoy it all. The hub within the hub is LoDo or Lower Downtown, so plan on staying in that area. Once there you won’t need a car as virtually everything is within walking distance, a short taxi ride or a trip on the free

16th Street Shuttle. Pay homage to Wynkoop Brewery fi rst which is fi tting because it was Denver’s fi rst brewpub. Sit at the bar, fi nd a table or go upstairs to shoot some pool, there is plenty of room. There are always at least 12 beers on tap and they range from the Wixa Weiss all the way up to the B3K Schwarzbier. Try the buffalo burger as well. Also located in Denver is Breckenridge Brewing. Their production facility is located at 471 Kalamath Street which gives

name to the amazing 471 series of small batch beers. The building also houses their barbecue restaurant which is a special treat in a town not normally known for barbecue. Back up in LoDo, Breckenridge also has their Ball Park Brew Pub. It used to house part of their production, including a bottling line that ran along a window in to the dining room. Alas, space considerations forced them to move all production south

and now the location is just one of the best restaurants in town…still with all the great Breckenridge beer as well as several guest taps. Ask for Tebo, Breckenridge’s head salesperson and sometimes known as the Mayor of Lodo. He’s always fun to drink with and can give you some great insight to the city. Three blocks from the Ball Park Brew Pub is Great Divide, a small (but growing) brewery that is known for producing high quality and fun beers. The tasting room is small and looks in to part of the brewery so you know the beer you are drinking is as fresh as possible.

Two other places to stop in LoDo are Falling Rock Taphouse and The Rackhouse Pub. The former is considered one of the best beer bars in the country and attracts some of the rarest beers available. During Great American Beer Festival week, the place is alive with special events and the patio is full of famous beer people. You might bump in to Garrett Oliver from Brooklyn Brewing or share a Pliney the Elder with Vinnie Cirluzo from Russian River. The Rackhouse Pub is the newest venture of Eric Warner, formerly of Flying Dog. Located in a building that is owned by Stranahan’s Whiskey (in and of itself a great reason to visit), The Rackhouse offers almost fi fty taps of great beer from across the country and the world.

Wow! Colorado is a great beer state

and takes a long time to travel, beerwise. We could have discussed at least another thirty or forty breweries and beer bars, but then we would be infringing on the Grog! and Club!

sections, and we don’t want to do that. We will have more on Colorado in the fall when we write about the Great American Beer Festival. Until then, if you need to escape the heat, consider one of the locations we have talked about over the past month and make sure you make beer part of your plans.

GAME!

VUVUZELA

The 2010 FIFA World Cup is Buzzing. Literally.Drums, songs, chants and cheers at the 2010 FIFA World Cup have been drowned out and overpowered by what is best described as the constant sound of swarming angry bees. Love ‘em or hate’em, the blaring plastic trumpets known as the vuvuzela have become the trademark sound of the 2010 World Cup.

What exactly is the appeal?

The vuvuzela is like a straightened trumpet and is played by blowing a raspberry into the mouthpiece. The player’s lips open and close about 235 times a second, sending puffs of air down the tube, which excite resonance of the air in the conical bore. A single vuvuzela played by a decent trumpeter is reminiscent of a hunting horn – but the sound is less pleasing when played by the average football fan, as the note is imperfect and fluctuates in frequency. It sounds more like an elephant trumpeting. This happens because the player does

not keep the airflow and motion of the lips consistent.

When hundreds of the vuvuzelas are played together, you get the distinctive droning sound. People in the crowd are blowing the instrument at different times and with slightly varying frequencies. The sound waxes and wanes. The overall effect is rather like the sound of a swarm of irritated and angry bees, to say the least.

Why so loud?

The loudness can be explained by the bore shape, which is roughly conical, and flares. As well as creating sound at a frequency of 235 hertz, the instrument generates harmonics – sound at multiples of the fundamental frequency. Strong harmonics have thus far been measured at 470, 700, 940, 1171, 1400 and 1630 hertz.

A flared instrument has louder higher-frequency harmonics than a cylindrical one. The flared instrument is perceived as louder because the higher harmonics are at frequencies where our hearing is most sensitive. This is partly why the conical saxophone sounds louder than the

cylindrical clarinet. Since it produces 116 decibels at 1 metre, prolonged exposure to the vuvuzela poses a risk

to hearing, according to a study by the Department of Communication Pathology at the University of Pretoria, South Africa.

Listen to just one instrument for 7 to 22 seconds and you exceed typical permitted levels for noise at work. A whole crowd produces even higher levels, and measurements at a training match have shown temporary hearing loss among spectators.

In short.

Pleasing or not, soccer will remain “the beautiful game.” Although the World Cup has seen a lack of scoring thus far, rest assured there will remain plenty of noise.

Modifi ed Arts Jazz Night June 24th

Modifi ed Arts is a contemporary gallery space in Downtown Phoenix that has made a name for itself through the variety of exhibitions it holds. Unlike most galleries that mostly cater to artists armed with paint and brush. Modifi ed has extended its hand out to the auditory arts as well. The intimacy of the gallery, paired with its open space makes for a unique private concert experience. Kind of like how it would be, if we had the extra cash to hire out a violinist to play alongside our dinner table. Kind of. Tonight Sam Pilafi an and his Dry Heat Ramblers will be performing New Orleans style Jazz. Pilafi an has played his tuba alongside and recorded with acts like Pink Floyd, and the New York Philharmonic among others. Afterward Dorn Mojo and the Low Sientos say good night with a Latin Jazz performance. Doors open at 6:30pm, show starts at 7pm. Admission is $5. 602-462-5516 http://modifi edarts.org

Kierland Commons Scottsdale Summer Concert June 26th The other night a decision was made to stroll through the outdoor shopping center Kierland, and stop by for a drink at North, a tasty contemportaty Italian restaurant. To my surprise, Kierland was in full swing to the sounds of a free concert in the middle of Center Plaza. Convientently we snagged a spot in North’s patio accompanied by an order of Sangria. The lawn in front of the stage was packed with people enjoying the band and forming their own mini dance circles. Great people watching let me tell you. As I

found out later, Kierland has started hosting these shows every week! Not bad to take a stroll, get a drink, enjoy a free show and then head out on the town. Or over do it on that pitcher of Sangria and go home- not advised. This week Chuck E. Baby will be playing Classic Rock hits as well as thier own. Show starts at 7pm and goes till 10pm www.kierlandcommons.com

Axisfornication Party June 26th If you want to get away but do not have the money, try to get luck on your side this weekend. Axis Radius, one of the biggest dance clubs in Old Town Scottsdale is giving away three 2-night trips to the Penasco Del Sol hotel in Rocky Point, Mexico. This promotion is all part of their daisy dukes and bikini top themed party. Ladies sporting a bikini top get 1cent drinks before 11pm. Not too bad for some pre-gaming. If you are new to town or just have not been, Axis Radius has typical club atmosphere. Good dance fl oors, dressed up crowd, and Djs spinning top 40 tunes - you know that whole story. The club itself is 2 in1 with an upstairs VIP lounge on both sides overlooking the dance fl oor. Good luck!

BARNEY FIFE aka BOB PHILLIPS BENEFIT & BIKE RUN AT WHISKEY RIVER

If you have been in a bar or nightclub in the Phoenix area over the past 35 years you’ve probably run across the valley’s own version of the The Andy Griffi th Show’s “Barney Fife” or as his mom named him, Bob Phillips. Phillips, a true celebrity “look a like” has been entertaining patrons on his free time and his “own dime” for three decades. Well into his 70’s now and retired, Phillips has fallen on hard fi nancial times. He hasn’t been able to make appearances in nightclubs as of late because he no longer has an automobile and doesn’t have access to late night transportation. Whiskey River Saloon in Phoenix is hosting a Benefi t & Bike Run to raise money to buy “Barney Fife” a (squad) car and to lend a fi nancial hand to an old friend. If you’d like to support this great event, plan to be at Whiskey River on Sunday June 27th . Events that start at 2pm include food, drink specials, raffl es, poker, and tons of fun! The

party goes all the way till 2am and who knows, maybe Aunt Bee will be there to get her groove on! For more details contact Whiskey River at 602-867-2802. Whiskey River Saloon is located at 3202 E. Greenway Parkway in Phoenix; on the NE corner just a wee bit north of Greenway on 32nd St.www.whiskeyriversaloon.com

Bobby Brown, Johnny Gill & Ralph Tresvant Fri., July 16th

New Edition descendents Bobby Brown, Johnny Gill and Ralph Tresvant bring their Heads of State tour to the intimate Celebrity Theatre at 8:30 p.m. on Friday, July 16th. Expect an incredible catalog of hits from their group and solo efforts. New Edition originated in Boston, Massachusetts and burst on the scene with their 1983 debut album ‘Candy Girl.’ They were the progenitors of the boy band movement of the 1980s and 1990s, and led the way for groups like New Kids on the Block and Boyz II Men. Some of their early hits included “Mr. Telephone Man” and “Cool It Now.” As they grew older, the sixsome drifted apart. The most eclectic member, Bobby Brown, left New Edition to pursue a solo career in 1986. The group remained strong, however, with R&B crooner Johnny Gill replacing Brown. New Edition’s

more mature work with Gill enabled them to successfully transition from teenage idols to adult stars. Brown briefly reunited with New Edition for their 1996 album ‘Home Again.’ In addition to their success with New Edition, Brown, Gill and Tresvant also prospered as solo artists. Bad boy Brown attracted the most attention with popular hits like “My Prerogative,” “Girlfriend” and “Every Little Step,” as well as his tabloid ubiquity, which included substance abuse and a failed marriage to Whitney Houston. Gill, who just finished his first Johnny Gill CD after 14 years, is best known for the sizzling hit “My, My, My.” Tresvant’s “Sensitivity” sold over a million copies and was a #1 R&B hit. His other hits include “Stone Cold Gentleman,” “Do What I Gotta Do” and “Rated X.”

Tickets ($35, $50 and $60 in advance/$40, $55 and $65 week of show) are on sale now at Celebrity Theatre or online at www.celebritytheatre.com. To charge by

phone, call 602-267-1600 ext. 1. All tickets are subject to a surcharge. Celebrity Theatre is conveniently located on 32nd St., just 4 blocks south of the Loop 202 freeway, in Phoenix. Free parking!

The most expensive guitar in the world is a Fender Stratocaster once owned by Eric Clapton. Nicknamed “Blackie”, it sold at auction for $959,500 on June 25th, 2004.

When Bill Jung was laid off from his semiconductor job after 14 and a half years, he and his wife Beth weren’t sure exactly what lay ahead; they did know one thing, they both had a passion for tequila and really fresh au-thentic Mexican food. It was a concept they had been thinking about for years, however, with the economy the way it was, it was not the most inviting time to open a new business, but they were not to be dissuaded. Bill’s idea was to take a shot! If they could withstand the downturn, they could certainly hold strong once the economy came back. Now Cave Creek is home to Los Mesquites Taqueria (The Mesquite Taco Factory).

Once known as a “rowdy hang out”, Los Mesquites now prides itself on customer appreciation, a family atmo-sphere and fantastic food at reason-able prices. They also have one of the largest collections of fi ne tequilas in the Town of Cave Creek.

Specialties include the use of a real mesquite fi red grill to cook the meats used in the tacos and fajitas. It is the mesquites smoked taste of the meats that sets Los Mesquites apart. Some of their specialty tacos include fi sh, shrimp, beef tongue and cow cheek tacos. The corn tortillas used for the tacos are pressed and grilled only after you place your order.

When asked what are his main priori-ties, Bill responded, “We listen to our customers. We have received great reviews saying our ‘Pollo Fundito is the best ever’ and our Carne Asada’ will change your life’! We are always are listening to our customers and are always trying to improve. If it wasn’t for our customers it would still be just a dream.”

Each day Los Mesquites has a lunch special value priced starting at $6.95. Dinner specials are common during

the week. On the weekends different unique chef specials are available. Of course, on the beautiful days (usually associated with Cave Creek) there is bar and food service on the fully misted patio. And for groups, club and busi-nesses they offer a private room for dinner or customized events.

For people who love the night life, Los Mesquites offers a wide variety of events, from karaoke every Tues-day night starting at 9, to open mic music on Mondays, and live music and dancing on varying schedule on the weekends. You can fi nd out exactly what is going on and when by becom-ing a fan on their Facebook page, which is updated daily.

“It’s defi nitely been a challenge over the last 18 months.” Says Bill, with a grin, “ especially since the place stayed vacant for almost a year before we came in. But when you see the place full of customers and their kids, I am thinking getting laid off might not have been such a bad thing after all.”

The Big Bang and the Songs of Love Foundation Join in Song to Help a Sick Child

The Big Bang Dueling Piano Bar in Tempe will be hosting a charity gala on July 1, 2010 as a culmination to the Big Bang Corporation efforts to raise money and awareness for The Songs of Love Foundation. Every Wednesday from April to the end of June, each Big Bang location has asked its clientele to chip in and support this special charity. On the fi rst Thursday of July, in an unprecedented event, patrons and employees in all four Big Bang locations will join in song lending their voices on a “song of love” for a child battling a serious illness.

All four venues will be uniting live via the internet. Supporters will be invited to sing at the same time through a video feed originating from Nashville. All voices will be simultaneously recorded and then added to the chorus of the pre-recorded song sung by artist, Mickie James. This will mark the fi rst

of a yearly collaborative event held by the Big Bang and the Songs of Love Foundation, a nonprofi t that creates personalized songs for children and teens facing tough medical, physical, and emotional challenges. Songs of Love Founder John Beltzer will be at the Big Bang Nashville as he leads the crowd to sing in all 4 locations.

“It is truly wonderful to be embarking in an event that will bridge people together in separate locations with a melodic chain of love. All for the common purpose of making a sick child smile. We are grateful to the Big Bang!” Beltzer says.

The Big Bang is an all-request, rock-n-roll, dueling piano bar. With operations in Tempe, St. Louis, Nashville, and Columbus OH, The Big Bang provides an entertainment experience that’s unlike any other. To learn more, visit www.thebigbangbar.com. To learn more about Songs of Love, visit www.songsofl ove.org For information on Mickie James who just released her debut album “Strangers & Angels” visit mickiejames.com
