Conflict in the office

Jill was elated when she got the job as foreign secretary at Siemens. Although she had the

stress of moving from Hamburg to Frankfurt am Main she was pleased when she found a little

reasonably priced apartment in close proximity to Siemens.

As Siemens had business partners in the USA and England she had lots of translations to do,

and she soon won the respect of her manager Rainer Schmidt who also admired her computer

skills. Not only did she have an excellent typing speed but was good at data processing and

excel too. One highlight at work was when she developed a home page for the export

department at Siemens.

Jill was also involved in office chores of the general nature. She not only had to reserve hotels,

book and confirm flights, but organized conferences as well. This entailed typing up the

agenda, preparing files for chair person with necessary documents, facilitating the managers

with writing utensils, note pads and transparencies, setting up the beamer, checking the flip

chart and overhead projector, preparing name tags, informing reception, and even putting

refreshments in the conference rooms.

When a delegation of business men arrived from America, she impressed her boss yet again.

Rainer Schmidt whose English wasn´t so good was totally dependent on Jill´s language

competence. Jill was able to come to terms with American English and had a sound

knowledge of business terminology which helped her to mediate during negotiations.

And when the delegation heard that she had spent a year in America they weren’t at all

surprised.

Jill loved America. The Americans were a little superficial at times, but it was pretty easy to

make friends in her free time and at work. Her working environment had been very pleasant.

During the day she had worked for Halliburton as an office administrator. Jill had been really

enthusiastic about the fact that all offices had been non-smoking offices at Halliburton.

Furthermore, every four hours she had had a meditation break with some of her young

colleagues. It had reduced the stress level, had helped her to relax, and she had felt great

afterwards.

Of course, her Siemens´ office in Frankfurt didn´t have these nice things. But Jill was very

happy until Steffi Müller arrived back from her six week vacation. The first thing Steffi did

when she arrived at the office they both shared, was smoke a cigarette. She was loud had the

habit of slamming doors, didn´t like having the window open, and after a day of work she had

effectively smoked 20 cigarettes, drank 12 cups of coffee, an heard Roland Kaiser´s greatest

hits ten times over.

In the evening Jill always arrived home feeling exhausted, frustrated and depressed. Steffi

Müller had literally made her life into a misery. She knew she had to do something about it.

True False Not in the text

Tapescript

Well, first of all, ladies and gentlemen, I’d like to cordially welcome you to our conference.

We’ve chosen Berlin as our venue, because we want to show off our new advertising

premises. Now, the real reason is, as you know, we will be launching a promotion campaign

in South Africa next month and Berlin is now not only an important international city but also

very accessible…

The following apologies for absence. Our public relations officer Susan Smith can’t be with

us today. She left for Manchester this morning. She’ll be at her Manchester office for the rest

of the week giving interviews to newspapers and developing catalogues and brochures for our

South African promotion campaign.

Ben is in Durban at the moment. He is looking for premises we can use as a courier centre for

our South African customers. As you know it is important to have sophisticated transport

systems which guarantee swift deliveries to various destinations and Ben is definitely the right

man for the job…

Before we move on to our promotions, Christina Miller is going to give you some interesting

information from the annual report. This is not only an informative marketing document for

our company but we will most certainly delight our shareholders who, I am convinced, will

continue to support us in our endeavour to secure a viable South African promotion

campaign…

And so on to our promotions campaign. When we set up our centre in Durban we must

intensify the advertising. Our main short term coals must be to make our products known to

the wide public to satisfy the needs of our customers. And last but not least to offer them a

product which is not only unique in South Africa but is affordable and available as well…

Ladies and Gentlemen, thank you for coming to the meeting. I am sure this campaign with

your help and support will turn out to be a success.
