Introduction

KMD Architects is an idea firm built upon a diverse community of talents, experiences and personalities. These attributes shape a common desire to create inspiring places for people to work, live and enjoy. We work intuitively through to the logic of actions, and embrace the emotion of collaboration.

Since our founding by Herbert McLaughlin in 1963, KMD has been a vanguard design firm asking “What if…” questions. Today we are an established international planning and design firm with practices in office, retail, hospitality, mixed-use, healthcare, government and academic. We often work with partner design firms, which allows for greater personal service to our clients, and a larger contribution of ideas to the project.

As planners and designers, we absorb the cultural context and unique demands that shape each design opportunity.

This is done before a single line is drawn. We continually learn from our experience and the world around us, informing our creativity, innovation and individuality. Our diverse portfolio reflects a great variety of clients, challenges and solutions, which we celebrate as the core to KMD’s ethos as a planning and design firm.

During the last 25 years, KMD has been recognized with more than 250 project awards, including more than 40 from the American Institute of Architects.

KMD employs a richly diverse staff of professionals who work across multiple project types, pollinating our project teams with a wealth of experience, balancing the discussion with different perspectives, and ensuring clients that they always receive our best work.

Workplace We spend a lot of time at work—sometimes a whole lot. Therefore, a person’s workspace needs to be both a great place to work and also a great place to spend the day. To this end, KMD firmly believes that workplace design is the act of creating inspiring functional spaces that people simply enjoy. We call design for being at work workplacemaking.

Workplacemaking understands that the workplace is a space for learning, dialogue, risk-taking, experimentation, and finally production. As a design process that puts the human work experience first, workplacemaking seeks to create highly flexible work arrangements that can be adjusted to balance evolving institutional needs with those of the modern worker.

KMD’s passion for workplacemaking was born through researching the economic, legal, cultural, and technological components of how our local and international clients work, innovate, and profit. As a result of our research, KMD was inspired to learn that workplacemaking does indeed nurture creativity, increase productivity, and help to retain top talent. Today, KMD is leading the way towards a human centered approach to workplace design. We are excited to be part of the shift away from brand dominant workplace interior design to one that puts people, communication, relationships and wellness first.

Cinépolis HeadquartersMORELIA, MEXICO Cinépolis, the sixth largest multiplex cinema chain in the world and the leading theatre operator in Mexico, commissioned KMD to design their new corporate headquarters. The complex is set on top of a hill on the outskirts of Morelia, a booming city approximately one hundred miles west of Mexico City. The new headquarters is a 75,000 SF (7,000 m2) group of low-rise buildings articulated in a campus setting, branded with an iconic tower stamped with the Cinépolis logo.

Designed to become one of Mexico’s most energy-efficient buildings, the Cinépolis headquarters will feature natural lighting throughout, an expansive green roof, sun-shading and natural ventilation (a key element in energy conservation), and will contribute to the spirit and overall productivity of all those who see it.

The Cinépolis headquarters building is “sculptural”. The orientation of the first two floors follows the direction of the hilltop, and an open plaza at the foot of the iconic tower connects the reception area with the offices. The second and third floors are shifted and aligned to the north, creating a soaring, floating element seen dramatically by viewers in the valley. The offices on these two floors will offer a spectacular 180 degree view.

The campus includes three additional buildings adjacent to the central plaza, connecting an auditorium, a theater and training facilities with gardens and terraces that can be enjoyed by staff and visitors alike.

Battelle Pacific Northwest National LaboratoryRICHLAND, WASHINGTON, USA Winner of a national design competition, KMD Architects’ design combines the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory’s (PNNL) Biological Sciences Facility (BSF) and Computational Sciences Facility (CSF). Battelle operates the laboratory for the U.S. Department of Energy.

The team used an integrated, collaborative method with all parties involved through all phases of the project to achieve LEED Gold certification. The Cowperwood Company developed and owns the BSF and CSF. KMD Architects designed the buildings using Revit Architecture, and Harvey Builders served as the general contractor for the fast-tracked, design/build project.

The BSF is approximately 71,000 SF while the CSF is roughly 73,000 SF. A two-story, transparent atrium connects the two buildings and provides shared common spaces where researchers from both facilities can collaborate and share ideas. The building uses 35% less energy and 30% less water than current best practice codes. The legacy of the BSF and CSF is not only how they will care for the environment by reducing their impact on it, but also how the sustainable features serve as an inspiration for future campus facilities and generations.

Cha Bio ComplexPANGYO, KOREA The south wing of the CHA Bio Complex features offices, conference rooms and a fourth floor executive office for Venture Capital groups. This unique element is part of a multi-programmatic vision. Understanding the key role that venture capital organizations play in the creation of new life-changing technologies, Dr. Cha included these offices as an integral part of the research complex. The synergies of the business aspects with the research elements will accelerate product research and discovery.

Amenities and unique features include a lounge with a medieval-style pipe organ, a multipurpose theater, a convention center, a public relations 3D media hall, a fitness center and pool, library and VIP guest houses. These spaces promote creativity, facilitate hard work, provide a venue for international conferences and create a hub for bio industry and research. Respites are created with nature gardens, public gathering spaces and dining facilities.

3M Corporate HeadquartersMEXICO CITY, MEXICO Completed in 1996, Phase 1 of 3M’s 300,000 SF (27,871 m2) Mexico headquarters boasts an elegant design with floor-to-ceiling windows offering glare-free views to Santa Fe’s city center. The understated elegance of the building is expressed in its simple lines and straightforward use of materials, which include native marble, aluminum and translucent double glass.

In 2011, 3M hired KMD for an interior re-design which included a new Innovation Center consisting of interactive displays, films, presentations and stories as well as office and reception spaces. The interior updates adopt new trends in design, pointing to open spaces which generate change and dynamism. Chances for impromptu interactions allow employees to share, relax, exchange information, or have casual meetings.

Liverpool HeadquartersMEXICO CITY, MEXICO KMD designed both the interiors and exterior of this corporate Headquarters building. Liverpool is a leading retailer in Mexico with over 80 stores nationwide. The premier retailer that previously housed its over 1400 employees in various locations wanted a corporate headquarters building that would encite the creation of a corporate culture as well as one that would make their operations more efficient and productive.

The building is divided into three distinct elements, surrounding a central plaza and uses a three story atrium space to connect the components and serves as the meeting point for all that use the building.

General Motors Technical CenterWARREN, MICHIGAN, USA Originally designed by Eero Saarinen in the early 1950s, General Motors’ historic 60-acre campus is not only gaining a new building designed by KMD, but with it new office design concepts that will enhance communication, productivity, and efficiency in GM’s design and engineering staff. The solution was to create the diversity of a campus environment within the confines of one building—a necessity in the harsh Michigan winters and a required security feature.

KMD designed the core/shell and tenant improvements for the new 960,000 SF (86,400 m2) office tower, and 1.3 million SF (117,000 m2) renovation of the existing Research & Development Building. Rising out of a man-made lake, the project furthers GM’s intention to concentrate 8,000 employees from 14 locations. The plan is designed to connect the new and existing buildings in spirit as well as physically, creating a flexible environment.

Exemplifying the campus feel, KMD designed pedestrian movement within the buildings to be guided by a “main street” thoroughfare with surrounding “neighborhoods” for conferencing and support functions. Wayfinding is established through the use of bold colors, textures, and signage. Facilities include a high-security R&D visioning environment, a 1,000-seat cafeteria/auditorium multi-use space, and retail storefronts within the building and along pedestrian paths. Terrace platforms on the lakefront offer spaces for events, displays, and outdoor dining. A landscaped pedestrian green belt called the Saarinen Mall connects the east and west sector of the campus, a loop road organizes traffic, and an expanded transit service links all campus buildings.

Shenergy HeadquartersSHANGHAI, CHINA KMD was selected as the result of an international design competition to design the new eight-story 240,000 SF Shenergy Group Headquarters in Shanghai, China. The project features highly sustainable design elements incorporating KMD’s research on sustainability and productivity.

Banco Santander Serfin Operations CenterQUERETARO, MEXICO In a strategic move, Banco Santander and Banco Serfin created an alliance to become one of the most dynamic and fast-growing banks in Mexico. The new 290,000 SF (27,000 m2) center in Queretaro is at the heart of this strategy as well as the decentralization of Banco Santander-Serfin. By moving the operations outside Mexico City, the bank hopes to become more profitable by making a more efficient use of its available operational space.

KMD was commissioned to design the first component of this corporate campus. The use of large 65,000 SF (6,000 m2) floor plates—unusual in Mexico—is an ideal solution for the bank’s requirements. Sectioning the plates with powerful, linear, triple-height atrium allows natural daylight to penetrate all areas of each floor while providing core circulation and informal gathering spaces. The space denotes modernity in an austere yet powerful manner.

In order to compensate for the distant location, the bank asked KMD to design a stand-alone cafeteria, a fitness center, and community spaces where staff can relax, socialize and pursue their personal well-being; activities necessary not only for a strong community feeling but also for a culture of corporate loyalty—a business attitude which is gaining ground in Mexico.

Jie Fang Daily HeadquartersSHANGHAI, CHINA The new 180,000 SF (16,700 m2) addition to Jie Fang Daily News and Media Group headquarters (JFD), the publisher of one of the most influential print media publishers in China, is envisioned by both the client and KMD as a clear statement of self-confidence, objectivity and openness, not only for JFD enterprise but also for the City of Shanghai. The project provides JFD with a state-of-the-art facility that will encourage and facilitate levels of interaction, integration and innovation among various user groups—both inside and outside the organization. Additionally, the usage of an environmentally sensitive development strategy will address both the community’s desire for a quality environment and JFD’s own needs of functional space for its future growth.

Covered with an “intelligent” curtain-wall system embedded with light shelves and sun-shading devices, the 60-foot-maximum-width office floor plates enjoy the most possible day lighting while bearing minimum solar gains. With traditional core components set aside on the west, more than 80% of the office spaces directly face east, enjoying panoramic views. The transparent/translucent skin system and crystal sail-like character represents JFD’s leadership, objectivity and openness.

Terret PolancoMEXICO CITY, MEXICO Terret is an office complex consisting of two towers for developer Abilia. The south tower is 32,320 m2 and the north tower has 33,781 m2 divided into 17 levels. A majestic main lobby and a spacious terrace and central patio are exclusively for tenants. The complex has 9 levels of parking providing a total of 2,680 spaces. There is a dedicated parking level for managers with access to the VIP elevator.

Terret is a sustainable project designed to have the LEED “Core and Shell” Certification from the USGBC and endorsed by the GDF PCES program. There is natural light in 90% of the interior spaces. Only paints, sealants and adhesives with low levels of contaminants were used. 12% reduction in energy consumption was achieved with special air conditioning systems, pumping and lighting.

Using alternative energy and zero use of CFCs in the air conditioning system curtain wall facade glass with solar control. Reuse of treated water and rainwater for toilets, cooling towers and gardens. Intelligent lighting automation systems and occupancy sensors.

Tower 1 was completed in 2014 and Tower 2 is nearing completion and includes KMD interior design for the offices of HBO.

Sun MicrosystemsNEWARK, CALIFORNIA, USA Sun Microsystems commissioned KMD to master plan and create a new campus to meet its ever-expanding growth and development needs. KMD master planned the Phase II and Phase III Newark Campus. Phase II contained 5 office buildings, a manufacturing center, and amenities building containing a cafeteria, conference, and health facility. KMD provided design services for the low-rise office buildings, which range from 80,000–140,000 SF. The first phase project construction cost $84 million and the first three buildings were completed in only eleven months. Upon the completion of Phase II, KMD was retained to design Phase III directly across an arterial street.

Designed to accommodate Sun’s expanding needs for high-tech work environments, Phase III is composed of six buildings comprising 806,000 SF situated directly across from phase II campus (also designed and master planned by KMD). The new campus presented many of the same challenges that we had faced in the design of phase II, while at the same time demonstrated a need for a separate identity in its programmatic elements. This new campus embodies, in its campus settings and notion of “design through discovery”, the same spirit that animates Sun’s work. The main points of departure from the first campus are a linear arrangement of the buildings fronting a “river” feature—a component of Sun’s perimeter security system—and the creation of vistas and view sheds. The facade development focused on depth of surfaces and of forefront planes against background fields.

Sun Microsystems was acquired by Oracle in 2010. The campus is now owned by Biomed Realty and operated as a multi-tenant research campus and renamed Pacific Research Center.

Inside In fashion, the bespoke suit or haute couture garment has long been coveted as the epitome of style and quality—and for good reason. The garments are specially crafted from the finest materials and customized exclusively for the fit and form of the particular wearer. Tailor and buyer form a strong relationship as they share ideas, needs and desires for the outcome of their shared product. They are an honor to create, a luxury to wear and, in contrast to ready-to-wear goods, tailored garments fit perfectly and imply a level of quality that says something about the wearer. At KMD Architects, we emulate this practice in our interior design work every day.

We don’t deal in commodities or one-size-fits-all solutions and we don’t think our clients should either. Instead we work closely with our clients to create tailor-made spaces that are clean, functional and timeless. These environments are more than physical containers; they are efficient, motivating tools in which companies grow and succeed.

Zappos.com HeadquartersLAS VEGAS, NEVADA, USA In 2010, Zappos.com, one of today’s most successful, progressive and forward thinking companies, signed a deal to lease the existing Las Vegas City Hall and surrounding 17 acres. Relocating from suburban Henderson, Nevada, the move not only allowed the startup room to grow in an urban environment, but will also result in 1,000 new jobs in the downtown Las Vegas area.

KMD partnered with Zappos.com to design the renovations of the 295,000 SF corporate headquarters. Originally built in the 1970s, KMD’s major infrastructure improvements and complete redesign of the interiors of the City Hall allow for occupancy to increase from 600 to 2,000. The building and location change represents a large shift for the Zappos.com staff. In a company where culture is paramount to the overall success, great care has been taken in researching employee needs, personalities and values to ensure that the design reflects what Zappos.com is all about.

From the perspective of Las Vegas, the new corporate campus represents a new phase of the city, diversifying the economy beyond gaming, and invigorating downtown.

HBOMEXICO CITY, MEXICO HBO’s new offices are in the KMD designed Terret Polanco’s north tower, located in a vibrant area of Mexico City. The KMD designed interior office space will be a branded environment, conveying the company’s culture and impact on the entertainment industry as the longest running premium pay televison service.

Our challenge was to reflect the image of the premium HBO brand and all the years they have been present in México, and the same time, create a fresh look with the latest technology and convey the portfolio of channels they distribute and the original productions they manage.

Ortho Clinical DiagnosticsMEXICO CITY, MEXICO OCD’s offices are located across from Mexico City’s busy World Trade Center. The company develops medical equipment for diagnosis in hospitals and laboratories. The program includes a product testing laboratory, a multi-purpose training area, receiving area and general offices with workstations.

Chaum Anti-Aging Life CenterSEOUL, KOREA The Chaum Anti-Aging Life Center is the world’s first and only health center devoted to the research of time and anti-aging. The unique combination of a diagnostics center, medical spa, fitness and health counseling, dietary and nutritional training and advanced tissue storage and gene therapy create a unique community that fosters healthy human longevity. The project is located within an existing 700,000 SF building of a medical campus and is designed as a futuristic vision of technology and nature in harmony. KMD provided both programming and design services and more importantly was instrumental in creating the partnership between Dr. Cha and the Buck Institute of Marin County, California, who are world renowned for their anti-aging research.

Omnicom Media GroupMEXICO CITY, MEXICO Omnicom Media Group is a company formed by three subdivisions separated by floor. With recent corporate growth they decided to create a unified space where clients can feel more comfortable and have access to the whole firm.

The challenge in this project was to create independent zones within a unified open space. This was resolved by color coding the departments and utilizing unique creative graphics.

Eli LillyMEXICO CITY, MEXICO This 52,000 square foot, three-story corporate headquarters features office space on the first and second floor while the common areas, including meeting rooms, cafeteria, kitchen and dining room are located on the third. The design concept was inspired by nature’s building block: the cell.

The elements throughout the building are unified despite the fact that the space was divided in three levels corresponding to an innovative, organic and dynamic architecture with movement and open spaces. Lilly gained in comfortable wide open spaces, with lots of natural light which was challenging to achieve due to the high density programming.

Cha University Library at Cha Bio ComplexPANGYO, KOREA The CHA University Graduate School of Medicine is located on the lower three floors of the Cha Bio Complex. The Library is one of the outstanding shared assets of this unparalled research facility. A unique environment is created with curvaceous, organic, bold design that results in a rich and memorable experience. Hard corners are almost non-existent; furnishings are smooth, curved, and often-times wooden, evoking elements of nature and warmth. Scappino Grupo OdemMEXICO CITY, MEXICO The goal of the new Scappino headquarters was to enhance efficiency, productivity and integration of its staff and to better reflect the company’s image. KMD Architects accomplished this goal by combining corporate and creative environments through a stylish, simple, and trendy design. A mix of classic wood details, glass transparent boxes for meeting rooms and private offices, and neutral shades in furniture and flooring brings an uncluttered elegance to the space. Specially designed flower pots are strategically placed to bring modernism into the environment.

The two level building consists of administrative, creative, and planning departments connected by a staircase at the center core of the space. Conference and meeting rooms are located around the stairs to provide customers direct access. The showroom is a dynamic space containing store displays that are transformed each season, filling the workspace with color and communicating product launches to the staff by use of graphic screens inscribed in glass. The inspiration room is where creative designers play with textiles and compare colors and create new collections. A special area was planned for fashion models to show new trends.

ShasaMEXICO CITY, MEXICO A light industry warehouse in the State of Mexico was the space used for Shasa´s offices. The client’s goal was to reflect the spirit of Shasa´s brand: bold and sassy women’s wear. The access to the building was designed as a catwalk with an abundance of red that represents passion for fashion and passion for work. The backbone of the project is a great wall that connects open spaces such as meeting points, and private areas. This wall also serves as a mural that makes a statement about the brands philosophy. A tree along the wall creates a focal point as well as a pleasing and natural element.

Scattered in different areas are what we call casual collision meeting points that promote spontaneous and informal meetings that reflect the dynamism of the company, which is all about continuous movement. The overall ambience is surrounded with powerful and blunt images that are connected to architecture that thrives to make an impact to everyday users. Another element that makes a statement is the mural that is subtle in essence but powerful in form. Recycling was also a big part of the general design; a lot of elements throughout this space were composed with thread reels and reclaimed cardboard tubes.

Cha Women’s & Children’s HospitalBUNDANG, KOREA KMD was the Design Architect for this new 130-bed Women’s and Children’s Center, which opened in June 2006, introducing to Korea U.S. patient and family centered concepts such as LDRs and parents allowed within the NICU. The program also encompasses retail spaces, a bank, garden areas, and a 135-stall parking garage. The 165,000 SF hospital is distributed within five stories above grade for patient beds and clinic, and five stories below grade for surgery, labor/delivery support services and parking. KMD also master planned The Cha Bundang General Hospital across the street for the future expansion and a bed tower addition. The plan includes a new nine-story tower for 150 beds, a clinic and retail spaces. The design of the new building will be consistent with the Cha Women’s and Children’s Center concept. University Medical Center & Children’s Hospital EL PASO, TEXAS, USA KMD assisted El Paso County’s conversion of the former Thomason General Hospital into an academic teaching hospital for the recently established Texas Tech University Paul Foster School of Medicine and the flagship for an ambitious city redevelopment project, the Medical Center of the Americas.

In addition, KMD envisioned, planned and designed the new El Paso Children’s Hospital. Fitting the hospital on the very small available site opened the opportunity to create a large pavilion to combine services for women and children into one, eleven story building with two distinct entrances and circulation systems.

The Phase I Children’s Hospital of 90 acute care and 50 NICU beds is planned for expansion beyond 200 beds, has its own Surgery Imaging, Emergency, Laboratory and Pharmacy departments but shares support services with University Medical Center. Primary and Specialty Clinics will occupy an existing free-standing office building and will be complemented by additional clinics within a new pediatric and obstetrics pavilion on the campus of the Paul Foster School of Medicine within the Texas Tech University Health Sciences campus.

University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer CenterHOUSTON, TEXAS, USA The new eight-story, 782,000 SF (72,700 m2) Ambulatory Clinical Building (ACB) is the first phase of the massive, KMD master-planned, 25-acre expansion at MD Anderson Cancer Center that will ultimately add 2.1 million SF (195,000 m2) of new treatment space to the University of Texas, Academic Medical Facility. The building encompasses a breast cancer center, a gynecologic oncology center, a genitourinary oncology center, a 75-bed ambulatory treatment center, 590 new patient exam rooms, as well as faculty and administrative support areas, and underground parking for 7,000 cars.

The challenge for the design team (KMD in association with FKP, Houston) was to create a new paradigm for cancer care and a plan that would minimize the institutional effect of its daunting size while being able to adapt to technological advances in the equipment and treatment of cancer patients. The team succeeded in constructing an inviting and soothing ambulatory care setting with long-term usability and value. The ACB was envisioned as an integral piece of a ‘campus’ designed in the manner of an Italian Village with a central piazza. The master plan called for a series of medium-height buildings organized around the central village green, the ACB being the first of four buildings that will surround a central “healing garden”.

An indoor waterfall, or “water-wall,” establishes an aquatic theme that flows through the building on all floors in the form of aquariums and ingenious glass columns filled with bubbling water, creating a warm and serene healing environment for patient, visitors and staff.

Al Amal HospitalDUBAI, UAE The Al Amal Psychiatric Hospital, for which KMD has twice been engaged to provide programming, planning and design services through 100% schematic design, is a prototype psychiatric facility that required a unique design and aesthetic response in order to ensure that its presence in the community is a welcome one, and that its treatment mission, both in- and out-patient, could be accomplished in the most effective manner.

The overall architectural appearance of the hospital is that of an oasis, or village surrounded by lush vegetation. The sides and rear of the building are buffered from adjoining land uses by inexpensive but tall, rapid growing plants, between the peripheral roadway and property line walls.

The architectural expression of the building employs a number of vernacular and passive design elements grounded in Middle East architecture that are applied in a modern cultural and aesthetic way. Monolithic walls define the edges of the main buildings which wrap at the main entry that establish a ceremonial entry sequence. This formal arrival begins at the gate to the campus, down the formal drive to an entry court. At the front of the hospital the massing steps up to a three story building component, drawing visitors with its grand entry portal. This main facade is complemented by the geometric forms of one-story, free-standing elements such as garden walls, a gymnasium and “half-way-home” patient accommodations.

Harbor-UCLA Medical CenterTORRANCE, CALIFORNIA, USA As part of a design-build team, KMD collaborated with Los Angeles County and the contractor to create a two-story addition to the existing hospital while the adjacent building remained fully operational. The addition adds 190,000 SF of new facilities to the hospital, including surgery and emergency services, a mechanical penthouse and an eight-story elevator tower connected by a 150-foot-long, two-story pedestrian spine with skylight to the existing hospital. The first floor program features the Emergency Department, including adult and pediatric triage, observation, diagnostics, and critical care. The second floor houses the outpatient surgery staging area, 16 new operating rooms, and a post-anesthesia care unit. A partial basement contains central sterile processing.

The building addition provides new amenities and access, such as a new loading dock and ambulance entrance immediately adjacent to the west side of the hospital. Additional site improvements include a new, freestanding elevated emergency helistop, a new 540-car parking structure, central utility plant and emergency generator upgrades, new surface parking lots adjacent to the hospital, public and service driveways, and a new hospital entrance plaza. Completed within an aggressive project schedule by the County, the project was completed in approximately 1,400 calendar days from the start of design to substantial construction completion in December 2013.

Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer CenterNEW YORK, NEW YORK, USA Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center is the world’s oldest and largest private institution dedicated to preventing, treating, and curing cancer. In 2000, the institution embarked on a massive renovation and expansion project to create a new surgical platform on its main campus in New York City. Despite the constraints of existing building infrastructure and a dense urban site, the facility, which opened in May 2006, is one of the most advanced of its kind in the world.

KMD, in association with Perkins Eastman Architects, planned and designed the new inpatient surgery department at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) in New York. The Interventional Platform Project contains 21 “state-of-the-future” operating rooms, pre-operating rooms, a PACU (Post Anesthesia Care Unit), and support and administrative functions to form a comprehensive 70,000 SF (6,500 m2) center of excellence.

The new surgical platform incorporates cutting-edge healthcare methodologies and technologies while remaining flexible enough to accommodate continuous innovation and adaptation in the future.

UCSF Medical Office BuildingSAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA, USA KMD won a design competition for the new Mount Zion Medical Office Building, a 48,000 SF 5-story building. Recently completed, this facility accommodates the growing needs of out-patient services affiliated with the University of California at San Francisco-Mount Zion Hospital campus.

A number of medical offices are housed there, including the Osher Center for Integrative Medicine, a leading alternative-medicine resource whose stated mission is “combining both conventional and alternative approaches that address all aspects of health and wellness—biological, psychological, social and spiritual.”

The building has landscape features including a garden on a fourth floor terrace, and wood elements on the facade, reflecting important Asian design elements of water, wind and earth. The building is LEED Silver Certified.

Imperial College London Diabetes CentreAL AIN, ABU DHABI, UAE This project encompasses 6,300 m2 over a two-story building and includes a combination of clinical, administrative, educational, support services and future expansion spaces.

The Centre provides comprehensive services in one location for the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of diabetes for the residents of the interior of Abu Dhabi, at Al Ain. The Centre is operated by the Imperial College of London in parallel to one already established and serving the metropolitan area of Abu Dhabi.

The new Centre has two floors. The upper floor is the primary clinic zone, planned so that patients follow a sequence of steps and visits to specialized examination, diagnostic and treatment rooms according to their diagnoses and individual treatment plans. Staff is located in close proximity to each other for frequent and convenient consultation about a given patient going through any given diagnostic and/or treatment protocol.

Solar shades, energy efficient MEP Building Services, greywater treatment, waste management, water-wise landscaping, solar heating and locally procured and manufactured materials helped make the Imperial College London Diabetes Centre the first Estidama Pearl-rated project in the UAE, having achieved a 2 Pearl Estidama Rating (Abu Dhabi’s environmental rating system).

Gaston Memorial Hospital Expansion & Birthing CenterGASTONIA, NORTH CAROLINA, USA The new Birthplace Pavilion is acknowledged as one of the most advanced birth centers in the United States. It was rated the highest in patient satisfaction among more than 500 hospitals evaluated nationally by Press-Ganey. It is among the first birth centers to adopt the private room NICU concepts pictured above. At 52-beds, its is perhaps the largest LDRP facility in the United States.

CaroMont Health selected KMD in March 2001 to provide architectural design services for the West Expansion project. Prior to undertaking the design, KMD was retained to perform a master plan for Gaston Memorial Hospital’s campus and programming services for the West Expansion. Subsequently, KMD became Architect of Record for the new expansion, atop a parking structure. The master plan study was divided into two parts. The first part was a campus development study to analyze the overall growth patterns of the campus and gain an understanding of potential sites for future development, including the new Women’s Center. The second part of the master plan consisted of an internal departmental study to analyze the potential for departmental growth and reallocation of space within the existing facility.

King Faisal University Medical Colleges Complex AL AHSA, KSA Strategies were developed to protect the interior areas of the campus from the strongest winds as well as to channel the wind both to potentially generate electricity through wind turbines and to allow softer cooling breezes to penetrate.

The buildings of the campus are shaped to steer the wind through the spaces between the buildings with the goal of cooling the spaces and the facades of the buildings. To maintain a lower rise vocabulary conducive to the movement of the wind, the shared lab building program has been split into two shorter buildings. The space between the two Lab buildings has been used to create a women’s only plaza focused on collaborative interactions.

Forming a spine down the center of the campus with the classroom and lab buildings on each side is a curving and undulating structure housing the shared campus amenities, such as shared dining facilities, central library and student activity spaces including a gymnasium. The curving spine building roof starts at the northwest over the large, shared auditorium and terminates at the southeast part of the campus where it wraps up and onto the Dental Building, more firmly linking the Dental Building with the rest of the campus.

Pusan National University Yangsan Medical CenterPUSAN, KOREA This turn-key project was completed in only four years (from masterplanning through occupancy) under the aegis of the joint venture between two large Korean CM-Construction firms, Daewoo and Hyundai. KMD partnered with Junglim, the Master Architect and was responsible for masterplanning and design through Design Development, with oversight of subsequent project phases. Because of the size and speed of the undertaking there were five architects of record for individual buildings, closely following KMD’s design guidelines.

Yonsei University Cancer Center HospitalSEOUL, KOREA The $150 million Yonsei University Cancer Center Hospital replaces an existing facility, bringing currently disparate patient care areas under one roof in a cutting edge facility designed to be the premier cancer center in the region.

The 700,000 SF building is carefully integrated into the site, adjacent to an existing acute care facility at the edge of the Yonsei University Campus. The central atrium lobby rises through the five floors of diagnostic and treatment facilities and in addition to suffusing the interior of the structure with natural light, provides a pedestrian and visual connection from the main entrance of the university campus, through the building and beyond to the atrium of the adjacent hospital.

Developing a unique visual identity for the cancer center while integrating into the architecture of the medical campus and maintaining view corridors from the adjacent hospital are key elements of the building design. Healing gardens, an amphitheater and dining facilities are located on the roof of the base block of the building to provide patients, families and visitors access to the outdoors and contact with nature. St. Jude Medical CenterFULLERTON, CALIFORNIA, USA The completion of the 5-story, 115,800 SF addition satisfied St. Jude Medical Center’s major goal to create new facilities for birthing, post-partum and NICU services. The new tower includes four new cardiac catheterization laboratories, new replacement emergency department, LDR and post-partum units, NICU and adult critical care units, new main lobby and a central plant. The phased replacement scheme breaks with the past and the limitations of an 11.5-foot interval between floors. KMD’s solution for Phase I successfully maintains two floors in common between the new and the existing building. Reaching consensus required a careful analysis of departmental relationships that would most benefit from horizontal consistency and finding innovative ways to interrelate departments and services that require stair and elevator connections.

El Camino HospitalMOUNTAIN VIEW, CALIFORNIA, USA KMD developed a comprehensive master plan for the “Hospital Community of the Future.” This SB1953 driven plan replaces the existing hospital with a new 460,000 SF state-of-the-art general acute care hospital. Key components include a 16 room Integrated Surgical/Interventional Platform, for surgery and cardiovascular procedures, a multi-track Emergency Department and flexible nursing modules with 28 critical care and 180 acuity adaptable beds. A 22,000 SF public mall dramatically marries the Hospital with existing buildings, greatly simplifying wayfinding. It contains vendor driven retail and convenience services and is designed to support an idealized patient and staff environment. Renovation of the 105,000 SF North Addition consolidates Outpatient Services in a cost efficient manner. The plan also includes an expansion of the energy center, and relocation of service docks.

Brigham & Women’s HospitalBOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, USA Beginning in 1984, KMD worked with Brigham and Women’s in the organization, development, phased renovation and expansion of the teaching facility. One of these projects, the 108,000 SF Ambulatory Services Building, features a multi-level atrium lobby. Subsequently, KMD was the consulting architect for planning and design for a 255,000 SF Center for Women and Newborns as well as a New Hospital Lobby.

In 1999, KMD was again retained to update Brigham’s site and facilities Master Plan to study the phased replacement of 300 beds in a new Specialty Hospital pavilion and a new 300,000 SF Center for Advanced Ambulatory Care.

Since 1984, KMD has worked with Brigham and Women’s in the organization, development, phased renovation and expansion of the teaching facility. The 108,000 SF Ambulatory Services Building, features a multi-level atrium lobby, which provides a new campus entry. A subsequent project enclosed an existing bleak courtyard to create the new main lobby for the entire hospital complex.

The Center for Women and Newborns consolidates outpatient and inpatient services into a one nine-story building. Planned for 12,000 annual births, the Center has 128 postpartum beds, 24 LDRs, 4 ORs, an Antepartum Intensive Care Unit and a 50-bed NICU. The Center does not have a separate entrance, but has a prominent multilevel lobby, along the Brigham Pike—a wide corridor linking several pavilions.

Duke University Children’s Hospital DURHAM, NORTH CAROLINA, USA KMD was retained to plan and design a new Children’s Hospital at the Duke University Medical Center through new construction and the remodel of more than 150,000 SF of space with in the existing hospital, including a new PICU, NICU, Birth Center and Post Partum Units for 6,500 annual births.

This new 95,000 SF, five-story ambulatory care facility serves as the major specialty referral center for infants and children of North Carolina. The Welcome Center atrium serves as the access point for all pediatric specialty clinics and services, includes retail shops and provides for the support programs such as imaging, registration and pharmacy. Existing Adult Inpatient Care Units were transformed from adult to children’s care.

All departments are provided with family oriented care centers within the new pavilion, including a Day Hospital for Ambulatory Surgery that is connected with the hospital’s surgical suite, a pediatric radiology department, and a stand alone Oncology Day Hospital for patients receiving chemotherapy or recovering from care given at the adult hospital’s radiation oncology center.

Grady Memorial HospitalATLANTA, GEORGIA, USA This ten-story, 372,00 SF clinic/diagnostic and treatment building provides facilities for outpatient clinics, which accommodate 2,000-3,000 people a day, as well as the inpatient services, including surgery, labor and delivery, a 120-bassinet neonatal intensive care unit, and 88 intensive care beds. A Second Phase 14-story addition and remodel provides space for more than 700 acute care beds and a new inpatient care hospital lobby.

In preparation for the large projects, the First Phase also included a 57,000 SF Emergency and Trauma Center divided into five separate departments, a new cafeteria and the relocation of hospital support and service departments of an adjacent city block. A major rehabilitation center within the hospital proper serves the needs of patients admitted through Grady’s Trauma Center, one of the largest in the United States.

Parnas TowerSEOUL, KOREA Parnas Hotel, an owner and operator of luxury hotels, commissioned KMD Architects and Chang-jo Architects to design its signature Parnas Tower in Seoul, Korea. Currently under construction, the mixed-use, 3 million SF, 38-story edifice consists of office space, a fitness club, and an upscale hotel on a 30,000 SF site. Parnas Tower embodies the Parnas brand and energizes the Gangnam-gu District through the building’s close proximity to World Trade Center Seoul and public transportation nodes. Designed to achieve LEED Gold.

The existing intersection of two major pedestrian footpaths from nearby Samseong Subway Station to the COEX Mall creates a welcoming landscaped plaza when walking up to the hotel. For vehicular building access, a passenger drop-off zone runs the length of the doors outside the Hotel Lobby, and there is also underground parking available.

Once inside, a grand, two-story lobby gives visitors and guests a sense of arrival to the building. As a highrise tower, elevator traffic has been well-orchestrated to maintain flow, security and easy access from top to bottom of the building.

Building functions and uses are bundled together following the building’s verticality in three main components: office, fitness/spa, and hotel. The hotel’s two top floors are comprised of a sky lounge and restaurant providing breathtaking views of the Han River and Downtown Seoul.

Parques PolancoMEXICO CITY, MEXICO Lauded as a gallery of cutting-edge urban architecture, Parques Polanco is an ultra-modern yet very human response to the demands of living in the Mexico City megalopolis. KMD’s master plan includes more than 30,000 m2 of green space along with auto-free pedestrian areas, commercial zones, underground parking, and extensive security systems at all points of entry, as well as in each building. The entire site area is 63,000 m2. Planned amenities to enhance residential options include a fitness center, cafeterias, shops, restaurants, and a hotel.

Within KMD’s master-planned development of Parques Polanco, we were responsible for the planning, design and delivery of two major building components—Residential Building I, which has levels with 54 apartments, and Residential Building II, which has 14 levels with 93 apartments.

Nadya ParkNAGOYA, JAPAN This 1,000,000 SF mixed-use center has proved to be an effective catalyst for the revitalization of Nagoya and for the city’s emergence as an important cultural and commercial capital in Japan. The building boosts Nagoya’s emergence as Japan’s “Design Capital”.

The 14-story public building contains a three-level design center with retail, display and educational facilities, convention meeting rooms, a 700-seat theater, 300-seat multipurpose hall and a youth center. The 23-story commercial tower houses specialty retail stores, showrooms and restuarants on its lower seven floors and offices above. The 7-story retail base of the larger tower is finely detailed and designed to reach out toward the street to excite and stimulate pedestriaWn access.

Garden Santa FeMEXICO CITY, MEXICO KMD Architects’s unique combination shopping mall, entertainment destination and urban park is considered to be one of the most innovative projects in the urban renewal program of Mexico City. KMD’s design provides a creative solution that balances public, private and government interests. The project features retail and entertainment needs below the park with functional parking, while combining an ingenious sustainable approach to the re-design of the open green spaces.

Our sustainable approach focuses on creating spaces and environments which improve human health and performance and bring nature and sustainability into everyday public experience. San AngelMEXICO CITY, MEXICO This 27,400 m2 office and retail center is located near the Olympic Stadium and City University in the San Angel neighborhood of Mexico City on a 4,326 m2 site. Multi-level plazas and rooftop garden dining offer Ajusco and volcanic mountain views to the east and west and city views of Santa Fe and Chapultepec to the north and South. The progam includes three lower levels of retail space and seven upper levels designed for commercial offices with four underground levels of parking.

Barra Entertainment CenterRIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL This 30,000 m2 entertainment center in Southern Rio de Janeiro is located next to a large retail mall alongside a major highway. As one of the first Entertainment Retail destinations in Latin America, the development attracts large crowds during all days of the week and times as one of the premier places to see and be seen. Centered around a protected but naturally ventilated atrium are a 16-screen cinema, multimedia game arcade, music and video stores, theme restaurants and cafes.

Mexico City ArenaMEXICO CITY, MEXICO KMD was selected to design a highly Iconic building to act as a major catalyst to Mexico City’s northern district of Azcapotzalco. Central to the city’s redevelopment master plan for a new mixed use center, this performance center includes 22,000 seats combining three levels of suites and exclusive lounges and amenities. Retail, food and conference spaces support the showroom event planning functions of its large exhibition halls and meeting spaces which are designed for flexibility and community activities and social interaction. This facility will also serve for large events for corporate meetings and expo product presentations.

KMD’s design is a bold move to express the dynamic energies of the program activities and the structural audacity of the building needs in a design solution that is both strong, simple and dynamic. The ‘lifting’ effect alludes to the energies in motion of the performing arts, concerts, and activities within. KMD’s ‘form follows function’, is interpreted in a vibrant language that includes the integration of state of the art electronic art throughout the skin of the exterior facades. Materials and finishes are both regional and referential to its urban context that includes a historic legacy of industrial large scale fabric.

Ford Field StadiumDETROIT, MICHIGAN, USA The new 1.5 million SF domed Ford Field Stadium and warehouse development, built for the Detroit Lions, is an integral component of the rejuvenation of downtown Detroit and is the first NFL stadium that integrates a mixed use commercial development that leverages the infrastructure for year round use. The $550 million Stadium is connected to the existing one million SF historic Hudson’s Warehouse that houses all the luxury suites, club areas, team store, food service and press areas for the stadium. Included in the warehouse is a commercial development that includes a nightclub/restaurant, 200-room hotel, office space and various retail. The complex unearths a lost sense of history through its reinvention of the“warehouse” district. The space celebrates the traditional industrial themes of Detroit’s past yet rejuvenates the warehouse through a series of sky lit atriums that foster a sense of urban streets.

Two Rodeo DriveBEVERLY HILLS, CALIFORNIA, USA Designed in the style of European shopping streets, this 136,000 SF retail complex is located on a prime site in an elegant commercial district. The project consists of multiple two and three story buildings, each with a unique facade. Authentic materials, such as limestone, sandstone and terra cotta, are used for the building surfaces and architectural details, establishing a rich historical theme.

The first floor of retail fronts Rodeo Drive, located in three and one-half story buildings similar in scale and design to those along the rest of Rodeo Drive. The second floor of retail fronts Via Rodeo, a curving pedestrian street that begins at the corner of Rodeo Drive and slopes up gently through the interior of the site, terminating at a piazza marked by a campanile containing elevators to below-grade parking.

Retail storefronts along Rodeo Drive and Wilshire Boulevard with inviting entryways serve to draw pedestrians into a central, open-to-the-sky corridor, embellished with public sculptures and landscaping. Underground parking accommodates 500 cars.

Las RozasMADRID, SPAIN Las Rozas is a 17,200 m2 themed factory outlet retail center just north of Madrid, Spain. The architectural theme creates a pedestrian street lined with two-story stores reminiscent of the historical European retail environment. The retail street branches form a central piazza to on-site parking including a garage and links to an adjacent entertainment center.

W Hotel Mexico CityMEXICO CITY, MEXICO. Recipient of the 2004 Golden Key Award by the International Hotel-Motel & Restaurant Association and the 2004 MAA Best Hospitality Project, the W Mexico City is located in the heart of Mexico City’s trendy Polanco District. Upon entering the 25-story building, guests find themselves in ‘The Living Room’, an inviting non-traditional lobby area and a multi-level lounge. The hotel’s 237 guest rooms and suites, feature maximized natural lighting and spectacular views of the city and are sufficiently large to accommodate spacious bathrooms with hammocks, large working desks and relaxation areas. The hotel features 7700 SF of meeting space, a spa, and a fitness center where guests can experience “temazcal,” a pre-hispanic ritual steam treatment. Recinto, an indigenous volcanic rock used in ancient Aztec architecture was used for the exterior skin of the building.

Alamar ResortPUERTO VALLARTA, MEXICO Alamar is a unique 600-unit residential resort located in Bahia de Banderas, at the north end of Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. 87 acres (35 hectares) of rolling hillside terrain offer panoramic ocean views from every unit, 75% of the land is dedicated to open space. Alamar boasts a master plan which emphasizes environmental initiatives in order to insure minimal impact on the surrounding terrain and optimal flexibility for phased construction.

Alamar includes a hillside village with quaint streets, a luxurious hotel, fine gourmet restaurants, retail boutiques and a top-of-the-line clubhouse. A Mexican minimalist beach club and a sports center complement and enhance the natural amenities of this innovative resort destination.

Atlas GardenMARRAKESH, MOROCCO Situated at the gateway to a new community in Morocco, the project consists of two quite different product types, a hotel and an apartment complex. Their differing uses mean that the hotel presents a more formal appearance while the apartment complex is more relaxed and intimate. They are however unified in the common use of materials and decorative elements. The hotel fronts an 18 hole championship golf course with unobstructed views across the golf course to the Atlas Mountains. The apartments feature architecture which utilizes traditional materials and forms in a contemporary interpretation. Individual three and four story buildings are strategically arranged on the site to provide all units with direct views to the golf course or Atlas Mountains and to maximize unit to unit privacy.

The property is configured with 184 guestrooms each with the ability to lock-off into two independent units resulting in a maximum key count of 368 units. The property includes delicately designed pools, a specialty restaurant and a state of the art fitness facility.

From developing courtyard housing for the elderly and split-level urban public housing, to the conversion of hospitals to condominiums, KMD has continually redefined the beauty and comforts of home.

Urban lifestyle has been a large focus of our practice, allowing us to continue to experiment in the residential environment such as the sculpted mixed-use, high-rise Montgomery/Washington Tower in downtown San Francisco. In Los Angeles, The Wilshire occupies a significant corner site near the University of California, Los Angeles campus. The CarlyleLOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA, USA The Carlyle is a 310,000 SF (29,000 m2), 24-story residential condominiums high-rise located on famous Wilshire Boulevard, in Los Angeles. Towering 300 feet, the Carlyle is one of the last high-rise residential projects to be added to the Los Angeles Wilshire Boulevard Golden Mile.

Each unit is designed with its own keyless private elevator entrance, thus eliminating lengthy corridors and allowing for each tenant to have open views of the Los Angeles metropolitan area.

Bringing the outside in with a combination of premium stone, marble and glass, the lobby expresses the attention to detail demonstrated by the building’s exterior design. The glass walls in the lobby further continue the harmonious connection between the exterior and interior by providing views of the surrounding landscape.

The lobby is complete with business offices and conference rooms, a spacious fitness center (fronting the outdoor lap pool), library and lounge facilities, a salon, media room, a full service kitchen, and a wine cellar. The courtyard is well equipped with saunas, hot tubs, a lap pool, built-in fireplaces, barbecue facilities, and even a putting green.

The Carlyle is truly reflective of luxurious “modern classical” architecture.

The units, on the market for purchase, are already reaching the highest sales value per square foot on the Wilshire Boulevard, second only to KMD’s previous project in the same area, The Wilshire.

The WilshireLOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA, USA This Premier 27-story highrise in Westwood Los Angeles provides 97 luxury condominiums on Wilshire Boulevard. Designed for a highly visible site, the building makes extensive use of balconies and enclosed glass conservatories on the lower levels to admit natural light and to take advantage of panoramic views stretching from Century City to Beverly Hills. To provide residents with a higher level of privacy, KMD re-thought the typical “bank of elevators” and dispersed them so that each apartment is entered from its own private elevator/lobby.

The HillstateSEOUL, KOREA KMD master planned and designed this urban residential high-rise development. The project is composed of one 30-story tower and four 20-story towers with a retail base and terraced gardens. California Veterans HomeFRESNO, CALIFORNIA, USA The Hensel Phelps/KMD team undertook the unprecedented challenge and opportunity to create a welcoming, stable and lasting community to help Veterans maintain individual identities and exercise personal preference, choice and independent initiatives. The campus evokes the essence of individual homes clustered into neighborhoods and unified by a Central Services Building.

The CDVA and the State of California defined the Critical Success Factors for the California Veterans Home-Fresno. They exhorted the Design-Build team to create an environment reflecting the comforts of home, providing the highest quality of life with dignity and positive self-image, and by the nature of its design, nurturing the human spirit of the members and staff.

The new CDVA Fresno Veterans’ Home project consists of six buildings in a campus setting: a main administration building with attached central plant and five large residential communities providing a total of 300 private bedrooms. The five residences include SNF (Skilled Nursing Facility), SNF-Memory Care, RCFE (Residential Care for the Elderly), and RCFE-Memory Care.

Mercy Family HousingSAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA, USA 10th and Mission Family Housing consists of 136 apartments comprised of a mix of 34 one bedroom, 42 two-bedroom and 60 three-bedroom apartments, including a manager’s unit. The overall gross building area is approximately 201,000 SF on 12 floors. Parking is provided in a secure covered garage for 23 vehicles including one Handicapped accessible space. Property Management is adjacent to the secure main entrance on Mission Street. A 2,650 SF multi-purpose room is located next to a 6,120 square foot secure outdoor terrace on the second floor. Ground floor space along Mission and 10th Street is approximately 3,000 SF of retail use and a 5,400 SF Youth Center which has access to a secure interior courtyard. A Public Art installation has been installed in the exterior windows of the Youth Center.

The main entrance facade of the facility, located on Mission Street, has been stepped back both as the building rises and also as it progresses from west to east in order to be complementary to the existing neighboring mid-rise buildings. A glass-faced stair tower and a curving treatment at the 10th and Mission corner is also featured. In order to mitigate the impact of and lend interest to the 10th Street facade, there is a differentiated two-floor base treatment and protruding bay windows at the residential floors.

Learning Right now, students, professors and researchers are sitting in a KMD-designed academic building. We have undertaken large projects in major academic centers in the United States and abroad. From master planning and programming through full architectural/engineering services and post-occupancy evaluations, KMD has created notable environments for both private and public institutions, with the majority of them in urban centers.

Time and time again, our team has developed consensus and achieved approvals amongst multiple departments and stakeholders vying for resources and space. We come to the table with ideas that engage with everyone’s needs so that the success of the project is measured by our clients’ satisfaction.

Through independent research funded by KMD, we have learned that many campuses have very little useable space; campus buildings are often designed as landmarks in an empty environment, or campuses are crowded with buildings that do not relate to one another or form a sensitive, overall environment. KMD’s approach to campus planning is to build on the existing context and create facilities that provide useable spaces, both with their programs and by embracing the areas around them.

Cha Bio ComplexPANGYO, KOREA The Cha Bio Complex combines three programmatic elements in a first-ever coexistance—education, research and venture capitalism—within 605,000 SF (56,000 m2). Completed in September 2014 and reaching seven stories above ground and five below, The CHA Bio Complex is designed to stimulate ground-breaking results in the fields of infertility, stem cells, regenerative medicine, cancer, genome, nano-bio, drug development, as well as medical and biomedical education. It inaugurates a new generation of research facility.

The CHA University Graduate School of Medicine is located on the lower three floors and students gain experience working in the laboratories of the upper level research wing of the complex. Facility includes dormitories, professor offices, school administration offices, spaces shared by all complex users including a swimming pool, fitness center, cafeteria, café, 400 seat conference center and banquet hall and a 200 seat auditorium.

Bertschi School Living Science BuildingSEATTLE, WASHINGTON, USA The Bertschi School Science Wing in Seattle is one of the first buildings in the world to meet the Living Building Challenge 2.0 and the first on an urban site. At 1,430 SF on a 3,800 SF site, the project completes the campus master plan for the elementary school. Occupied in February 2011, all of the project’s design and preconstruction services were performed pro-bono with many donations for materials and labor.

The unique challenges of this net-zero energy and net-zero water Living Building required the team’s integrative approach from the outset. Students interact and learn with the building systems, including an indoor wall of tropical plants to treat all grey water, a composting toilet to treat all black water, a river in the classroom to convey water, photovoltaic panels with energy meter and a food producing garden. Additionally, only healthy, non-toxic materials complying with strict sourcing requirements are used in the building.

All members of the design team, including key collaborators such as the city and county were involved in every decision from the project’s inception to find the solutions that would be most beneficial and sustainable for the project.

City College of San Francisco Health & Wellness FacilitySAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA, USA KMD/K2A designed CCSF’s new 120,000 SF, $44 million Health and Wellness facility for their main campus. The facility includes a gymnasium with three full size ball courts, an indoor 25-meter competition swimming pool, aerobics, dance and martial arts workout rooms. The project also includes support areas for all organized team sports and the wellness program areas for nutritional training, physical therapy and health counseling that ties in with the campus health center also designed by the KMD/K2A team.

Stanford National Accelerator Laboratory (SLAC)Science & User Support BuildingMENLO PARK, CALIFORNIA, USA The SLAC Science and User Support Building was awarded on the basis of greatest value to SLAC, through a design-build competition. The SUSB is aligned with the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center’s mission and strategy, focused upon adhering our nation’s energy goals and the mission of the Department of Energy. The building contains offices, classrooms and conference spaces, including a large auditorium to serve the SLAC campus located in the hills above Stanford University.

The architectural basis of design integrates high performance sustainable building principles and systems which include concepts such as selecting energy efficient equipment and orienting the facility to maximize heating and cooling efficiencies obtained through solar gain, performance of thermal mass, day lighting and individually Internet Protocol (IP) addressable lighting with occupant control, strategic use of glazing both in materials and placement, means to control seasonal variations in direct solar gain through glazing, such as external screens or other shading devices in order to minimize summer cooling loads, and energy efficient equipment. Project has been certified LEED Gold.

UC Riverside Student CenterRIVERSIDE, CALIFORNIA, USA The new 150,000 SF Student Commons serves as the “heart” of the UCR campus. The project includes the renovation of over 25,000 GSF of existing program and the addition of a 24-hour program that includes the student government, student clubs, pub, sports bar & grill, coffee lounge, retail, administrative office space, and a conference center. Using themes of both academic and retail design, the project is comprised of 3 buildings surrounding a piazza, with a “market street” fronted with retail and convenience amenities feeding through the north end of the site through the piazza to the gateway to the complex at the south. The design facilitates in the overall sense of flow, movement, and student/faculty interaction.

UCSD Price CenterLA JOLLA, CALIFORNIA, USA This award-winning $16,000,000 complex forms a new social hub for the University of California, San Diego campus. Serving the university community of 15,000 students, the Center’s 160,000 SF include a 500-seat state-of-the-art theater, a 12,000 SF ballroom, a franchise food court, recreation facilities, and offices for many campus organizations. A 50,000 SF bookstore and other retail operations are also included. Close to the Central Library and grouped around an open plaza, the project consists of two major structures, one of three levels and the other with two. Prior to design, KMD developed the program for the project through interviews and workshops with the many campus constituencies.

Cal-Poly SLO School of BusinessSAN LUIS OBISPO, CALIFORNIA, USA This new 115,000 SF addition and renovation includes faculty and administrative offices, computer labs, lecture and meeting rooms, and a 300-seat lecture hall. The tile roof and stucco exterior reflect the existing building’s Spanish motif. The courtyard and covered walkway with grass slope, palm trees, and benches, encourage social interaction.

Alaska University Arctic Research CenterFAIRBANKS, ALASKA, USA KMD completed the programming, planning and design for a major addition to this internationally recognized research center. Primarily focused on issues of the arctic environment, the IARC includes research on land, sea, ice, and atmospheric issues. The first phase addition is a new 75,000 SF laboratory facility which includes class 100 clean rooms and BL3 environmental rooms.

In addition to labs, the new facility involves classrooms, offices, a library, fabrication shops, and a special center for the National Weather Services. Key to the design is the creation of a work environment which promote collegiality and informal communication among researchers working in the complex.

Public Spaces The role of the architect team for public projects differs greatly from that of private projects. Public projects, by definition, are open and answerable to the citizenry. The design team is, to varying degrees, a public spokesperson for the project. This may involve meeting with local committee groups to explain how the project will benefit the area, or to gather input from these groups as to how to mitigate the project’s impact on surrounding neighborhoods. There are also security issues to consider.

Over 60% of KMD’s work is in the public sector. This provides us with a great depth of experience working with local, state, and federal government review agencies. We bring to each project the knowledge of precedents as well as innovations in fire protection, building constructibility, technical and product information.

Public Utilities Commission HeadquartersSAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA, USA The City of San Francisco has designated the new 277,500 SF building as the city’s investment into sustainability technology to spur new green industries and to demonstrate the city’s leadership to the community through education. The project is a test-bed for new technologies which will invigorate the public realm.

A Living Machine® recycles blackwater, in addition to other systems that harvest and recycle greywater, photovoltaics and wind turbines. Advanced technology makes daylight management a science thanks to facade-specific, timebased interior window shades, and exterior blinds that respond to the sun.

The building generates over 7% of its own energy through photovoltaics, wind turbines and reduction of energy needs through enhanced envelope and mechanical systems design making the PUC building one of the most sustainable urban office buildings in North America.

International Cruise Ship Terminal at Pier 27SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA, USA This Joint Venture project of KMD Architects-Pfau Long Architects, with maritime facilities consultant Bermello & Ajamil of Miami, Florida served as the headquarters and principal viewpoint for the America’s Cup Races on San Francisco Bay in 2013.

The James R. Herman International Cruise Ship Terminal at Pier 27 now serves as the new point-of-entry to San Francisco, as well as a special event facility on non-cruise days. The platform landscaping serves as a 2-acre Northeast Wharf public plaza pedestrian access to the water’s edge as required by the San Francisco Bay Conservation and Development Commission’s Special Area Plan for the San Francisco Waterfront.

With multiple stakeholders, overlapping jurisdictional bodies, and active community groups the project required a sophisticated approach to include many viewpoints in order to deliver a successful project.

By eliminating the use of harmful PVCs and harvesting rainwater for reuse in giant cisterns, among other sustainable strategies, the Terminal has been certified LEED Silver.

Seongnam City HallSEONGNAM, KOREA As the winner of an invited, international design competition the new city hall and council by KMD Architects/Samoo Architects and Engineers is a 130-foot-high, 800,000 SF structure that combines both government and citizen services. While traditionally council chambers and city halls occupy separate buildings in Korea, here the two are joined and placed at the same level to express the belief that the people and the government should see eye to eye.

The ground level of City Hall is open and transparent to inspire a sense of community and interaction, putting the activities within on display. Easily accessible, this level contains all citizen administrative services, an auditorium for public hearings and aother special events. The council chambers are cantilevered above the ground plane to further create a sense of openness.

Solano County Government Center FAIRFIELD, CALIFORNIA, USA KMD provided architectural planning and design services for this new six-story County Government Center consolidating administrative and office functions of 16 public agencies into one centralized facility. The 342,000 SF design-build project includes a 1,050 stall freestanding parking structure, a 42,500 SF adjoining Probation Building and site development. KMD’s services included confirming the County’s programming, all of the tenant space planning documentation, site design documentation, construction administration and post-occupancy evaluations.

KMD also supervised, managed and conducted peer reviews for the construction documents the design team created and worked with the design-build team to ensure fulfillment of the design intent. KMD subcontracted the services for structural, civil, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing engineers, as well as landscape design, cost estimators, parking design, telecommunications systems design, security, and lighting design.

KMD’s suggestion to retain the services of a green building consultant to collaborate with on the benefits and cost issues of sustainable building materials and energy systems led to the project’s LEED certification.

FEMA HeadquartersWINCHESTER, VIRGINIA, USA KMD was selected by FEMA and GSA to design this $30 million regional headquarters project on a large semi-rural site in Virginia near Washington, D.C. The four-story 165,000 SF operations center, which is a highly secure facility, features a screen wall composed of locally ‘harvested’ (site-recycled) limestone cladding—in addition to the precast concrete panels, aluminum curtain wall, and high-performance glazing systems. Highly sustainable features include extensive access to daylighting and views, exterior sun shading and screening devices, operable windows, and a vegetated green roof. The project is LEED certified.

Anchorage International Airport Rail StationANCHORAGE, ALASKA, USA The $20 million Alaska Railroad Bill Sheffield Depot Station at the Anchorage International Airport serves as part of the link between the airport and the cruise ship docks on Cook Inlet. The 24,000 SF station is also designed for private and public receptions when not acting as a passenger depot. Steel and glass are the primary materials with Alaskan stone and wood interior finishes.

Federal Bureau of Investigation Field OfficeDALLAS, TEXAS, USA This multi-building campus- like FBI facility is situated on a 15-acre site in suburban Dallas. The distinctive 5-story, double-winged 250,000 SF building clad in precast concrete metal and glass incorporates a floor plan concept organized around a large inner courtyard, providing employee amenity space and a secure outdoor work environment. The $36 million project, which includes a four story parking structure and landscaped outer grounds, maximizes sustainability through the use of solar shading, high-performance glazing, and recycled materials. Reflecting the Government’s satisfaction with the project the FBI/GSA requested that the developer, architect, and builder (Cowperwood, KMD, and HCB) develop a proposal for a moderately sized multi-level expansion to the facility.

Oakland Federal BuildingOAKLAND, CALIFORNIA, USA KMD provided complete design services, master planning, construction documents and construction administration for the Oakland Federal Building. This is the largest office building ever built in the East Bay, and won a presidential design award from President Clinton. This project is one of the most prominently recognized buildings in the Bay Area, serving as a symbol for the federal government and the City of Oakland.

This building design won the Department of Energy’s Energy Conservation Award. Although the design process was begun in 1986 in advance of many of today’s common energy conservation products and techniques, the designers continued to change the design as new products, equipment, and methods became available.
