Development of Electronic Fuel Injection for ALCO Locomotives of Indian Railways

Electronic Fuel Injection fitted locomotive 16502R has been launched in commercial service by Shri V. Ramachandran,Director General /RDSOon 14 Sep 2011 at Alambagh Diesel Shed, Lucknow. A short training course has been organized for the diesel maintenance and running staff of Lucknow Division. A test scheme has been issued to the Diesel Shed for monitoring the performance of the EFI fitted locomotive. Performance of the locomotive is being monitored by RDSO.

Looking back, EFI was developed by RDSO in a structured way and as part of a well thought out plan. Initially, detailed literature survey was done and technical specification developed for procurement of one set of Electronic Fuel Injection System. Global tender was floated for purchase of 16 nos. of electronic Fuel Injection Pumps, Engine Control Unit, various Sensors, all wires and harnesses. In absence of controls lab in RDSO, a special team was created to look after the various aspects of EFI development. This included in-house CAD development of fuel headers, pipes, connections, layout of wire harnesses, optimization of the injection characteristics of the electronic FIP, development of a new injector after detailed computational fluid dynamics simulation (done in-house), modification of components to fit the sensors etc. ECU calibration was a new activity and required development of design of experiments and mapping of the various parameters. About 6 months time was taken for ECU calibration. Interfacing of the ECU to the Test Bed controller and the Locomotive traction control system was the most critical of the activities and an MOU was signed with IIT Kanpur to develop the necessary hardware and software for

these interfacings. The EFI system was first tested extensively on the Engine Test Bed in the ED Dte. for debugging. This was then followed by a 'dry run' at the Alambagh Diesel Shed on a diesel locomotive including a load box test. The final fitment was done at DMW Patiala. inaugural speech, emphasized

that High Speed Rail Transport

has become more relevant in

present scenario of Global

Warming and environmental concerns, as it consumes

almost one- fifth of fuel in comparison to Air Travel and

can be faster and more convenient than air travel in

many scenarios. Moreover, High Speed Rail

Transport, unlike air travel, is not dependent on fossil

fuel alone, but all the alternate and renewable energy

sources can be tapped for utilisation in High Speed

Rail Transport. Therefore High Speed Rail has a great

future ahead. Indian Railways, in its vision statement

for the year 2020 has envisaged construction of four

dedicated High Speed Rail Corridors between its

major cities. Six corridors have been shortlisted for

pre-feasibility studies. RITES along with M/s Systra

has mentioned in its feasibility study report for Pune-

Mumbai-Ahmedabad corridor that journey time from

Pune to Ahemdabad, a distance of more than 600 kms,

will be reduced to less than 3 hours from existing 12

hours.
