What is knowledge management?

• Our operating definition

The identification, storage and use of valued information that creates and environment for operational efficiency, informed decisionmaking, and confident planning.

Great Lakes Region

Page 5: Km chicago presentation 9 10-13

Desired Outcomes

• Reduce project definition and startup times for construction projects

• Reduce orientation time for new property and asset managers

• Increase confidence in working with the information at hand.

Page 6: Km chicago presentation 9 10-13

Our Plan

1. Identify valued asset information to organize and make available

1. Identify resources for planning and forecasting

1. Create a more complete real-time picture using existing technologies and resources.

Page 7: Km chicago presentation 9 10-13

Our Unifying Principles

• How can we make Property and Asset Managers more operationally effective?

• What information can we make available to create a more complete "real-time" picture of our building assets?

• How can we apply our collected information for better-informed and agile forecasting?

Page 8: Km chicago presentation 9 10-13

1. What do you look for on a daily basis?

1. What information is difficult to get at?

1. Is there any information that you know exists but can’t find?

1. How long before you give up looking for Information?

Applied Knowledge Management Lessons Learned

1. Technologies change, but information needs to be protected

2. Build from the least common demoninator upwards

3. Ask the people who use the information

4. The info is there, just not easy to get at

5. Consistency, currency, reliability

6. Don’t source the work, build a process for creation and maintenance.

Page 29: Km chicago presentation 9 10-13

Further Lessons Learned

1. Test everything2. Don’t do a ribbon-cutting, go viral3. When building, stay low-tech4. Tag your information yourself5. Stay focused on serving a group of

end-users.
