PLANNING FOR HOPE: LIV-ING WITH FRONTOTEMPO-RAL DISEASE captures some of the most brilliant and pas-sionate researchers exploring early diagnoses for this rare dis-ease. Frontotemporal Disease or Dementia (FTD) has been misdiagnosed along with other neurodegenerative diseases that cause dementia in young people in their 40s at the peak of their careers and in the prime of their lives. Most importantly, families have stepped forward in this poignant documentary to share their heart-wrenching stories of perpetual grieving, amidst financial struggles and caring for their loved ones. Also, professionals explore financial and estate planning for FTD victims and their families. Today, there is no single known cause, treatment or cure for FTD. However, the film provides hope for the future, as science is moving at a fast pace. Airs Monday, May 23 at 8 pm

MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS MONTH

PROFILES OF HOPE

As part of the Los Angeles County Department of Men-tal Health (LACDMH) fight against stigma and discrimina-tion in persons diagnosed with mental illness, the Public Information Office (PIO) has created a film entitled Profiles of Hope, a sixty-minute presentation for public television consisting of six high-profile persons in recovery. Profiles of Hope will highlight what people diagnosed with mental illnesses do in a typical day to promote their own recovery as well as the wellness of those around them.

Kathleen Piché, L.C.S.W., LACDMH PIO Director, located six strong personalities who volunteered to tell their story and bring their recovery issues to light, in hopes of creating discussion, bringing a more educated view to the public and creating tolerance and acceptance of those diagnosed

with mental illnesses and/or addiction. Through their stories, we highlight how they have effectively dealt with problems so that clients, families and the community will not delay in seeking treatment, and therefore have better outcomes.6-part series begins airing Monday, May 2 at 8 & 8:30 pm

ANTIQUES ROADSHOW: WASHINGTON, D.C. Host Mark L. Walberg and appraiser Michael Flanigan visit the Harry S. Truman Building, headquarters of the U.S. State Department and its diplomatic reception rooms, including the Thomas Jefferson State Reception Room, appointed with some of the best Americana of the 18th and 19th centu-ries. Highlights include a 1958 signed letter by Martin Luther King Jr.; a circa 1965 Andy Warhol lithograph; and a unique, turn-of-the-20th-century, hand-wrought Gorham silver tea set, valued at $90,000. Series begins airing Friday, May 27 at 8pm and Sunday, May 29 at 8 pm

MASTERPIECE: SOUTH RIDING A lively new headmistress brings progressive ideas to a conservative girls’ school in Depression-era Yorkshire, sparking conflict — and a powerful attraction — with a stern, brooding landowner rooted in a troubled past. With its pounding surf and grinding poverty, South Riding presents a hardscrabble community still crippled from World War I, and its transformation, when infused with hope, through modernization, poetry, and even love. Anna Maxwell Martin stars in this three-part miniseries, adapted from Winifred Holtby’s 1936 novel by celebrated screenwriter Andrew Davies. Also starring are David Morrissey and Penelope Wilton. Series begins airing Friday, May 6 at 9pm

Private Felix Longoria fought and died while fighting the Japa-nese during World War II. But when his body was sent back his small hometown in Texas, the only funeral parlor there refused to hold a wake for the Mexican American GI because “the whites would not like it.” The incident would ripple outward, launching the career of Lyndon B. Johnson, landing the undertaker in a mental institution, engendering hostile recriminations for the next 50 years, and launching the Mexican American civil rights move-ment. INDEPENDENT LENS: THE LONGORIA AFFAIR airs Tuesday, May 31 at 10 pm

HOLOCAUST VACATION follows a Holocaust survivor and her family as they travel from New York City to Poland, revisit-ing her childhood haunts, seeing the locations of her wartime travails and hearing about the “little” acts of love that kept her alive. Since the film is autobiographical, the family includes the entire production team, filmmakers Doniphan and Nicholas Blair, as well as Doniphan’s rebellious teenage daughter Irena, Nicholas’ worrywart wife Tania, their joke-cracking gentile father Vachel, and their survivor mother Tonia. The film concludes on this theme: Kindness is an existential counter force to atrocity. Airs Tuesday, May 10 at 8 pm

In 1941, the Nazis asserted their power by overrunning tiny villages throughout Eastern Europe. In the middle of the horror and chaos stood 15-year-old Fanya Gottesfeld (Heller). Only through the kindness of a Polish peas-ant did Fanya survive - hidden beneath a chicken coop with her parents and brother for two-and-a-half years. Based on her ac-claimed memoir, Love In A World of Sorrow, TEENAGE WITNESS: THE FANYA GOT-TESFELD HELLER STORY presents a raw and emotional look at survival and the tenacity of the human spirit. Richard Gere narrates. Fanya’s story differs from other Holocaust narratives because of her relationship with a Ukrainian soldier - a Nazi collaborator who helped save her family from certain death. However, this relationship left Fanya with questions she continues to struggle with today. The film follows Fanya as she wrestles with the past and focuses on the importance of her work today. Airs Tuesday, May 17 at 8 pm

In NATURE: BEARS OF THE LAST FRONTIER – CITY OF BEARS bear biologist Chris Morgan sets up camp at a remote spot in the heart of Alaskan wilderness, along-side the largest concentration of grizzlies in the world. It is June in the Alaska Peninsula. The sun sets well into night and bears are taking advantage of the long days to feed, mate and raise new cubs. Morgan tracks their progress as they feast on the riches of the season and re-establish the complex hierarchal social dynamics of bear society. Along the way, he experiences close encounters with bears, observing brutal battles among males during mating season as well as tender moments between a grizzly mom and her cubs. Airs Monday May, 9 at 10 pm and Thursday, May 12 at 8 pm

PLANNING FOR HOPE: LIVING WITH FRONTOTEMPORAL DISEASE captures some of the most brilliant and passionate re-searchers exploring early diagnoses for this rare disease. Frontotemporal Disease or De-mentia (FTD) has been misdiagnosed along with other neurodegenerative diseases that cause dementia in young people in their 40s at the peak of their careers and in the prime of their lives. Most importantly, families have stepped forward in this poignant documen-tary to share their heart-wrenching stories of perpetual grieving, amidst financial struggles and caring for their loved ones. Also, profes-sionals explore financial and estate planning for FTD victims and their families. Today, there is no single known cause, treatment or cure for FTD. However, the film provides hope for the future, as science is moving at a fast pace. Airs Monday, May 23 at 8 pm
