CHAIRMAN’S CHAT

Another Kick Start Rally of Derbyshire has suddenly flashed by and, as usual, was a tremendous success. Everyone agreed it was a competitive but fair event, a classic Derbyshire route, a fantastic number of marshals and minimal PR issues afterwards. My thanks to Guy Robinson, all his team, the marshals and the PR personnel who made it all happen. Well done also to the competitors, Matlock getting an unprecedented number of crews in the top ten. Also I mustn’t forget our sponsor Steve Perez especially for allowing us to use his “stage” not once but twice! As well as the Rally, the Annual General Meeting (AGM) has also been and gone with the blink of an eye. Apart from one post, the Committee members were re-elected en bloc, so you have to put up with us for another year – your fault! We do though now have a vacancy for Chief Marshal as Amanda O’Brien has had to resign after many years’ service in the post. My heartfelt thanks to Amanda but she has said that she will gladly help out and offer advice to the new incumbent. Although we didn’t manage to find a replacement at the AGM we can still accommodate a willing volunteer to perform the duties on a temporary basis. Any volunteers please? Don’t worry about a lack of experience, enthusiasm is much more important. The complete list of committee members is shown below. And now on a very sad note I have to report the passing away of a former member, Mike Farmer, in April. Mike joined the club in the late 60’s and was instrumental in getting our Road Rally off the ground becoming the inaugural Clerk of the Course of the DFS (now the Kick Start) in 1973. He was an exceptionally quick driver, winning

3

the DFS Rally twice in 1978 and 1980 and then moving on to the Motoring News Championship in the mid 1980’s where he was trading places with the likes of Pattisson, Ingram and Carless. I first noticed Mike when he competed on the RAC Rally in 1971 in his beloved Imp, sporting Matlock MC stickers. He moved to Kenilworth in the 80’s but on occasions was seen back in Matlock when visiting his parents and siblings. Away from cars, he competed in the London Marathon where he set a very respectable time of 3 hours 20 minutes. Mike was 66 and leaves a wife Christine, son Jason and daughter Lucy. May I welcome the following new members: Ben Butler (Hull), Sion Matthews (Anglesey), Chris Bell (Brimington), Tim Bates (Dronfield Woodhouse), Mick and Sue Briant (Darley Dale), Karen and Matthew Vincent (Shepshed), Carl Whitford (Clay Cross) and Jon Bossen (Congleton). And finally for the odd remaining stragglers who have not yet paid their subscriptions for this year, this will be your final Klaxon. A renewal form is enclosed. Charlie Wheeldon (Chairman)

ODDS AND SODS

• We have a new contract for Club Clothing from “Not Just T-Shirts” 354 Derby Road, Birdholme, Chesterfield. S40 2ET. Tel 01246 554884. These include Polo shirts at £19.30, Fleeces at £23 and Hoodys at £21.60, all inclusive of MMC logo. Visit www.notjusttshirts.co.uk

• We have also procured some Matlock MC Clipboards, emblazoned with the Club’s logo, for sale at £3 each. Please see Fran.

• After being the bridesmaids so many times on recent events, Rich Hunter and Gary Evans finally cracked it and won the Ryemoor Rally in March and then, to cap it all, they were top dogs on our Kick Start Rally! Very well done indeed.

• Talking of the Kick Start Rally we had no less than 9 drivers and 5 navigators finishing in the top 10 – Rich and Gary winners, Andy Smith and Carl Williamson 2nd, Ben Briant 3rd, Ian Ainsworth and Stewart Merry 4th, John Leckie 5th, Martin Betts and Sasha 6th, Craig Burgess 7th, Mark Turner 9th and Allan Storer and Tom Fenton 10th . Absolutely fantastic!

• And finally on the Road Rally front, another first overall from Matlock, this time for Martin Lloyd on the Tour of Anglesey, with Jon Bossen third and Rich and Gary in 4th spot.

• Our ever popular Field Day (Gymkhana) has been set for the 14th August. Graeme Stone is the organiser – more details in the next Klaxon.

• The recent East Midlands Inter Club Quiz was won by Lindholme MSC with Matlock teams coming 4th and 5th in what turned out to be an extremely mind-blowing night. At least though we don’t have to organise next year’s event!

• A surprise and welcome visitor to the Black Swan in March was Martin Filleul who was part of the S & H team competing on the ACF Table Top Rally. Martin was a top navigator in the 80’s, sitting alongside the likes of Ciro Carannante and Tony Stubbins, and is thinking of making a comeback.

• For Sale: MGF VVC. Red, two owners, MOT January 2016, 41500 miles. Offers to Simon Taylor 07887650995.

• Marshals are required for the Dmack Carlisle Stages Rally on Saturday 11th June. The event is a round of the ever popular BTRDA Forest Rally Championship and numerous other regional championships so a large quality entry list is expected. The Ash Park stage is the only one to run twice. FCD: 10:11 & 13:53, so very little down time in between runs. Contact Trevor Leathley on 01482 862377 (home) or 07980 476122 (mob)

RALLY MARSHALS’ TRAINING SCHEME

Over 3,300 people have completed the MSA’s online rally marshals’ training scheme, which Nicky Grist helped launch at Autosport International in January. Those who have not done so already are advised that, in order to receive their marshal’s card and tabard, they should log back into the MSA members’ website and complete their marshal’s registration. For details, email [email protected]

HERO EVENT MARSHALLING

We have received feedback from several club members that they would like the opportunity to marshal on HERO events running locally. We have also been asked by HERO to provide marshals for 3 events this year: RAC 1000 Mile Trial. The morning of Thursday 14th July. Around Chesterfield and over the moors to Tissington and Darley Moor. RAC Rally of the Tests. The morning of Sunday 6th November. Details are being finalised, but likely to be at the JCB Factory and Marchington. Le JOG 3rd-6th December. Welsh Borders and Chester area. Please get in touch with Frances Banning asap if you are interested in marshalling at any of these events, particularly the 1000 Mile Trial as it isn't too far away. It's on our doorstep so we should be able to show some good support. Thanks Fran, 07973 689971 [email protected]

ALTRATECH 061 ROAD RALLY 21ST / 22ND MAY

LIVERPOOL MOTOR CLUB - SATURDAY APRIL 23 - AINTREE SPRINT - A DAY AT THE RACES.

I wasn't quite sure how to construct this report, so I'll do it my way! Part 1: Aintree was the first round of the HRCR (Historic Rally Car Register) Speed Championship which consists of sprints and hill-climbs around the UK. My objective was to get some Championship points without any dramas and suss' out the opposition for the remainder of the season. After two practice runs and three timed, I had improved my times by 3.56 seconds and a top speed from 91 to 93 mph; oh and grabbed a maximum 25 points. That all sounds very impressive and ended a pleasing day; but in hindsight (video footage), I felt I should have performed better. The above text would have provided an adequate email, so you can sign off now! However if you're curious, then read on. Part 2: The Aintree sprint course is 1847 metres in length and consists of only three turns: Country Corner, Village Corner and Becher’s Bend. After Practice One the inimitable James Kerr (in my Class 1b) had set the pace with a time of 54.93 and terminal speed of 114 mph. When I saw my time of 70.82 seconds and 91 mph, I felt about as useful as a handbrake on a canoe! However when the results of my HRCR colleagues started to appear, my mood was slightly lightened. Last year's runner-up was only 5 seconds quicker in his Class 3b (Modified Production) Mk1GT Cortina, I was three seconds quicker than a Mini Cooper S and a Mk2 RS2000 returned a 120.51!! The Liverpool Motor Club organisers insisted that everyone new to Aintree should walk the course, and I can understand why. After the 250 metre opening straight you have a 90 degree left at Country Corner. It's a blind corner protected by Armco and millions of tons of Liverpudlian earth. After a similar length straight there's a third gear open 120 right with broken concrete at the clipping point: don't cut!! Next up is Valentines way, a fifth gear 450 metre straight leading into Becher’s Bend: this is the accident waiting to happen!! Check out Youtube 'Deryck Jones Aintree Sprint April 2015', start with the running wide on the grass on Timed Run Two. Apparently competitors have been known to run wide here and after skittling the straw bales, attacked the first fence at Becher’s, Red Rum style. The fences do NOT give way! The final run-home is the 600 metre Railway Straight where on Saturday a Cosworth Powered Talbot Sunbeam achieved 150mph; only beaten by a single -seater Gould 55B with 169 mph.

11

Part 3: Back to the plot. It's no coincidence that I mentioned Deryck Jones earlier, his time of 53.57 at Aintree last April exactly matched James Kerr's T2 time on Saturday. Deryck also succeeded in beating the Class 1b 'regulars' at Harewood last September AND again this April. So to put my performance into context I have compared my in-car footage with his Youtube 53.57 time. After Practice Run 2 James Kerr had been overhauled by a Renault 5 Gt Turbo and although I had improved my time by 1.35 seconds, the RS2000 (3b Modified Production Class) had woken up with a time 11 seconds quicker than mine! Referring to the Jones/Kerr benchmark, I had dropped four seconds when exiting Village Corner and a further three seconds down Valentines Way. An experimental gear selection into Village cost me 0.35 in Timed 3 but I clawed back a 0.96 on the final timed run. James Kerr pulled out all the stops to snatch the 1b class win against the Renault, while my margin against the RS2000 and GT Cortina remained roughly constant. I really enjoyed Aintree and look forward to returning. The walk around the circuit shows Aintree as quite intimidating because you notice how wide and fast this ex -Grand Prix circuit is, compared to for example Harewood and Curborough. The benchmark video shows Deryck Jones attacking Becher’s in fourth gear, where I chose third. Other than that our gear changes were similar within a few metres. However Deryck's 'drive it like it's stolen' approach made my efforts look very pedestrian. By the end of Becher’s, Deryck had opened the gap to 10 seconds and was winding up his Peugeot 205 to his terminal speed of 109 mph and another 3 seconds off my time. I'm convinced that my top speed would have been closer to the 100mph mark if I had held fourth gear for longer on Railway Straight. However I have to put all this into context and looking back to Aintree 2014, the results show Fred Currell's VW Golf Gti setting a Class 1b record time of 51.86 with a terminal speed of 121 mph. So, in summary, I need to push much harder through the turns and use more revs on the final straight. Next outing is the Curborough Long circuit and getting the opening left-hander sorted. Curborough will be the ultimate round of HRCR Speed on October 1st. Keep watching. Steve Tilley.

KICK START RALLY OF DERBYSHIRE 9/10 APRIL 2016 Richard Hunter/Gary Evans continued their winning ways after a faultless performance on the Kick Start Rally of Derbyshire. The event attracted 47 entries for the 130 mile route around Derbyshire and Staffordshire. Early pacesetters Ian Ainsworth/Stewart Merry were fastest around the first special test at Chez Perez and extended this lead over Beeley Moor. The Escorts of Hunter/Evans and Ben Briant/Max Freeman turned up the heat over sections around Youlgreave, Kenslow and Hartington to arrive at petrol separated by 4 seconds in favour of the former. Early in the second half Martin Betts and Sasha Heriot disappeared into a field near Throwley for several minutes which put them out of contention. Graeme Stone and Sam Collis then developed major brake problems all the way to the finish. Later in the second half Andy Smith/Carl Williamson snatched second on the penultimate section when the unlucky Briant/Freeman pairing were baulked by non-competing traffic. There was a final heart-stopping moment for Rich Hunter on Agnes Meadow white when his Escort became stuck for a few seconds but somehow he still manage to clean the section. Notable retirements included Carl Hawkins/Michael Gilbey and Jon Bossen/Shaun Hughes who were 6th and 5th at petrol respectively. First semi-experts were Louis Baines/Kris Coombes and leading novices Paul Dyer/Dave Aincham. David Pedley with daughter Grace on the maps were leading semi-experts at petrol and set a top ten time on the second running of Chez Perez but the young today need their rest, so they cut part of the second half. First Matlock novice crew were Dean Dye and Richard Cheetham on their very first Nat B Rally. Guy Robinson.
