West Perth and Claremont premiership player Brendan Barrows knows better than most the importance of raising awareness about a major men’s health issue.
In May last year, at the age of 42, Barrows was diagnosed with prostate cancer, the most common cancer in men, with 20,000 new cases diagnosed nationally each year.
The father of two young children, Ruby who turns seven on Sunday and Boston who is five, didn’t have any symptoms of the disease but rather pro-actively approached his doctor for a blood test.
“Dad is still fighting prostate cancer and I was aware of it so I thought I’d get tested,” the former Falcons captain said.

LIVESKnowing t he score
“People generally said I was too young to get tested, but given the family history I thought it was worth it – and it was. I could have lived another 20 years not knowing I had prostate cancer but by then it would have been too lately and likely to have spread further throughout my body.
“It was a huge shock to be told I had cancer, but I decided straight away to have my prostate removed and do whatever I could to try to make sure all of the cancer was out of my body.
“Tests have shown that I am clear of cancer and I am feeling good.”
This weekend the WAFL is teaming with the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia (PCFA) to help raise awareness amongst the football community, and the wider community, about prostate cancer.
In honour of this campaign and Men’s Health Week which runs from June 9-15, Round 12 is Know Your Score Round.
The key message of the Know Your Score campaign is to encourage men to speak to their doctors and keep themselves ‘in the game!’
West Coast Eagles legend Glen Jakovich is the patron of Know your Score Round.
“Being a professional athlete, I know the importance of being proactive about your health and wellbeing,” Jakovich said.
“I have been touched by cancer in my family, and I want to do everything possible to be here to watch my children grow up.
“Keeping on top of your health should be a priority for everyone and it is an invaluable investment for your future.”
New research commissioned by PCFA has revealed that Australian men aged between 18-50 years feel they don’t know much about the disease.
More than half of men surveyed (58%) reported they did not know the symptoms of prostate cancer and only one in 10 Australian men (under 50 years) whose father had been diagnosed with prostate cancer had open discussions about it.
Just 20 days after his surgery last year, Barrows, who is now a farmer in Borden, was on a bike riding from Perth to Margaret River raising money and awareness for prostate cancer. He was also a guest speaker earlier this year at the Aglime of Australia Mates 500 Relay - a 1500 kilometre 11 day running event from Mukinbudin to Manjimup- which lists the PCFA as a beneficiary.
The dedication and passion Barrows showed on the football field was surpassed by the courage he showed to get on the bike and he raised nearly $12,000 for the PCFA.
“I wanted to prove that having cancer wasn’t the end of the world and that if you put your mind to something you could do it,” he said.
“You have to stay as positive as you can and not let it get you down.”
Barrows still pulls on the boots from time to time with Borden but his battle over the past 12 months has been a stark reminder to men, young and old, that this silent disease can’t be ignored.
“The consequences of not getting tested early far outweigh any hesitation you have about going to your doctor and having a blood test,” he said.
“That test will tell you if you need follow up treatment and if you get it early enough you can get on top of it.
“I can tell you I was more nervous about getting those test results than I ever was about a game of football. But once I got over the shock and all of the horrible thoughts about the effect this would have on my family, I decided to face it head on and that’s the best advice I could give anyone. Face it and deal with it as early as you can.”
For further information about prostate cancer or PCFA, visit www.pcfa.org.au or free call 1800 22 00 99.
PCFA recommends men over the age of 50, or 40 if they have a family history of prostate cancer, should talk to their doctor about being tested for prostate cancer.
PCFA also recommends men should make an individual informed decision about testing based on discussion with their doctors.
• In this edition of the Football Budget you will find your free interactive Know Your Score card.
The two-sided goal/point card invites spectators to be more involved in the game while supporting their team. The cards can be held up when their team scores, or when a player is heading towards goals, creating a vision of blue for prostate cancer.
Also, please show your support to PCFA by donating to their members at the entry gates at this week’s WAFL games, or head online to www.knowyourscore.org.au
CORRECTION
IN last week’s Football Budget we said that Claremont’s Jack Richardson was
the brother of former player Ian. In fact, he is not related to Ian but is the son of
former Swan Districts and East Perth player Steve Richardson.
“I wanted to prove that
having cancer wasn’t the end
of the world and that if you
put your mind to something
you could do it,”
Brendan Barrows.

Like most collectors, my passion for collecting can be traced back to my childhood.
At first, it was Football Budgets and then I started collecting cards, both WAFL and VFL/AFL. Sadly, though, the rise of the VFL basically put an end to WAFL cards.
Since West Coast entered the VFL/AFL in 1987, the only cards issued of any note have been those put out by Swan Districts in 1997, by East Perth club photographer Paul Litherland in 2008 (which I am keen to find, if anyone can help) and the WAFL’s own cards in 2001, 2004, 2005 and 2006.
Occasionally, WAFL players have also featured in other sets, too, like those made for the new AFL Hall of Fame inductees (on the rare occasion when a West Australian player is inducted).
But, for the most part, WAFL collectors are left chasing older cards, like those from the 1960s and 1970s.
Thankfully, the card collecting landscape is undergoing something of a change and WAFL collectors may soon have some new cards to chase.
Smaller manufacturers have appeared on the Victorian scene in recent years as card dealers increasingly look at ways to break into a market that has for more than a decade been controlled by the AFL and its few licensees.
One recent example highlights the change.
Last weekend, Melbourne-based Jajas Collectables held a card fair in Morley. To my knowledge it was the first real attempt at holding a card collecting fair in Perth.
About 400 attended and those who were there were given the opportunity to buy three cards that were manufactured specifically for that fair. One of those cards featured a WAFL player in East Perth champion Peter Spencer.
The card was limited in number to just 50 and each was signed by Spencer on the day.
While the young crowd may have identified more with the 2000s AFL player who appeared on the other two cards, it was fantastic to see a WAFL hero like Spencer recognised in such a way.
And I’m now hoping it will be the first of many such efforts by other manufacturers to ensure the entire history of WAFL footy isn’t usurped by that of the VFL, at least on footy cards, anyway.
And if any WAFL collectors are looking for somewhere to spend $30, then you can still pick up one of the Spencer cards on the net at www.jajascollectables.com.
Old WAFL bags are difficult things to find.
Among those to appear for sale from time-to-time are those that were sold in the early 1980s, each in team colours and featuring the w-style logos that were created for the clubs in the 70s.
But the oldest one I’ve seen so far was that shown to me by a long-time Subiaco supporter, who received it directly from the daughter of Jack Diprose – a Subiaco and West Perth star during the first 15 years of last century.
Back in 2012, I wrote about the bag in this column and suggested it probably dated to the 1950s. I had certainly never seen another one like it.
That was until this week when Brendan emailed me a photograph of the Swan Districts bag he had inherited from his great-grandfather.
I reckon Brendan’s dates to the 1950s and could well have been made by the same company as the Subiaco bag.
Has anyone seen another one of these?
The highlight of the last week’s sales will undoubtedly have been the result on a rare 1914 East Fremantle member’s ticket book, which was put up for auction.
Unfortunately, the auction hadn’t finished by the time WAFL Collectables had to be filed, so I will update readers on the result next week. The reserve price was set at $800.
Meanwhile, a 1952 WA v SA Budget sold at auction for $38.77 and a West Perth lapel pin sold for the rather disappointing price of $28.
The surprise of the week was the sale price achieved for a piece of wrapping paper which featured the logos of the eight traditional WAFL clubs and dated to about 1981/82.
Measuring 48cm x 68cm, it sold for $152.50 – or almost $470 per square metre!
Finally, my thanks must go to Norm and Jackie, both of whom were able to help with some post-1990 Claremont annual reports to fill the holes in my own collection.

SUBIACO V PERTH
For much of last season Subiaco couldn’t find a reliable goalkicker.
So they went out to buy one. And they found it with Matthew Boland.
The former VFL forward has been one of the WAFL recruits of the season and he leads the race for the Bernie Naylor Medal with 31 goals from 10 matches.
The 23-year-old has been the beneficiary of the impressive efforts from Jason Bristow, Kyal Horsley and George Wheeler. And he has backed the work of those midfielders.
The quartet was the key behind Subiaco’s second-half surge against the then league-leading Swan Districts last Saturday.
Some Perth players could be playing for their futures in this match in Kalgoorlie-Boulder, and that of their coach Damien McMahon over the next few weeks.
The Demons have had plenty of chances to improve their 3-7 record but can’t string together enough four-quarter efforts.
The second half of the season gives Matthew Boyle, Matthew Hunt, Kieran Hug and Brad Keast the chance to stamp their authority on the Perth line-up.
PEEL V SWAN DISTRICTS
Time is running out for Peel to avoid another WAFL wooden spoon.
But the Thunder have shown in the past month that their form isn’t far from being capable of conquering some big scalps.
Peel claimed its breakthrough win of 2014 against South Fremantle in round nine, a week after losing to last year’s premier, West Perth, by a point.
And the Thunder had their chances of knocking off East Fremantle in the previous round only to run out of steam in the final quarter.
With Scott Gumbleton, Jon Griffin and Kepler Bradley working their way back to AFL fitness, Peel has some big weapons that will give Swans plenty to think about.
But the Thunder needs Sam Menegola, Cruize Garlett and Kristin Thornton to have an impact if they are to shock the black and whites.
Swans had won eight in a row until they encountered Subiaco last week.
However, Ryan Davis, Tim Geappen and Aaron Elari remained potent weapons and they will again be the danger men in this clash with Peel.
EAST PERTH V SOUTH FREM
East Perth’s key statistic this season isn’t the amount of forward 50m entries, tackles, contested possessions or centre clearances.
Whenever an opposition prepares for the Royals they look to the number of AFL-listed players in the black and blue guernseys.
The surplus Eagles are starting to have the impact many expected and that poses a major headache for a South Fremantle line-up fighting to keep its 2014 season alive.
The biggest problem for rivals is the amount of Royals talls. With Callum Sinclair, Scott Lycett, Paul Johnson, Fraser McInnes and Josh Smith, Brian Dawson’s unit has plenty of options on the ball and in attack.
However, the Bulldogs will also have to pay attention to WAFL-only duo Freddie Clutterbuck and Stephen Payne, who have brilliantly complemented the AFL talent to be just as dangerous for East Perth.
South Fremantle had the bye in the previous round and had plenty of time to plan a counter attack for a Royals team that kicked 22 goals in the win over Perth last weekend.
Former Royal Brock Higgins becomes a key figure for the Bulldogs in the ruck while the underdogs will also rely on the contribution of senior players Mitch Carter, Craig White, Ashton Hams and Tim Kelly if they are to cause an upset.
:: Kyal Horsley
WEST PERTH V EAST FREMANTLE
The finals might have come early to Arena Joondalup.
This battle between two of the WAFL’s oldest clubs could have an impact on who plays in the September action and who watches from the sidelines.
East Fremantle holds on to fourth spot on the premiership table but that will change if fifth-placed West Perth can claim the win at home.
And it might be the battle of the makeshift ruck divisions that decides the result.
Seva Martin has been thrust into the Falcons’ following brigade because of injury to No.1 big man Chris Keunen while the Sharks have relied on Rob Young and James Bristow, not renowned tap performers, to give their team first use of the ball.
West Perth also needs a couple of key targets to stand tall in attack. Bill Monaghan has moved Nic Rodda from defence to forward line mid-season and the utility player has been a positive near the goals.
But he needs help for the Falcons to kick a winning score.
The Sharks will have to counter the defensive rebound of Andrew Strijk, whose brilliant disposal by foot has set up many of West Perth’s best forward thrusts.

Female Footbal l on the rise WAFC Female Football Coordinator Allana Dickie said the Youth Girls Competition wasn’t all about winning, but about giving the girls an opportunity to play football in a fun and safe environment.
“This Competition is welcoming to players of all skill levels, as the coaches involved work strongly on the development of the players,” she said.
“There are a number of girls who have represented WA on the National Stage, proving that the progression and development of young girls in the sport is strong and well supported.”

THE Youth Girls football competition has become a pivotal step in the pathway for female footballers following unprecedented growth to 19,326 female participants in WA last season.
As the participation of Female Football significantly increases, the Youth Girl’s Competition (ages 13-18years) has closed the gap from NAB Auskick (ages 5-8 years), Junior Girls (ages 8-12 years), through to the WA Women’s Football League (aged 16 years and over).
The Youth Girls Season started on May 11 with nine eager teams finally getting a chance to pull on the boots. This included one team from each District; South Fremantle, Peel Thunderbirds, Swan Districts, Perth Angels, East Fremantle, Claremont, Coastal Titans (Subiaco), Joondalup Falcons (West Perth) and the newest addition of the Coolbinia Bombers (East Perth).
Olivia Strandly, 15, is playing Youth Girls football for South Fremantle this year after starting her football in NAB AFL Auskick in the South Fremantle District and continuing her love of the game by playing juniors alongside boys with Bibra Lake and South Coogee.
Before the advent of the Youth Girls Competition, she would previously have been unable to continue playing, with boys only competitions beyond the junior age group.

THE West Coast Eagles State Amateur U23’s program has come to an end, with the team facing defeat in both its contests.
The eight-week-long program concluded last Saturday night when the WA side was defeated by the South Australian Amateur Football League in the 2014 AAFC Championship game at Kingsway Sporting Complex.
The loss followed on from their 37-point loss to the WA State Country League in May.
Unfortunately for the West Coast Eagles State Amateur U23’s, the visiting side proved too good and fought hard in the final quarter to emerge victorious.
The SAAFL side got out to an early lead, but the West Coast Eagles State Amateur U23’s responded by kicking three consecutive goals to take the lead and go into the first break nine points up.
By half-time the game had changed with SAAFL dominating the second quarter, adding 5.5 to their score and limiting the West Coast Eagles State Amateur U23’s to just two goals.
The WA squad had a fierce third quarter, playing exciting football to kick 4.4, while SAAFL’s inaccurate goal kicking meant they added just one goal.
Heading into the last quarter with scores level, the game was up for grabs.
The SAAFL stamped their dominance in the second half of the quarter, kicking three quick goals in succession to steal the win from the West Coast Eagles State Amateur U23’s 14.19 (103) to 13.6 (84).
In a highly-competitive contest, the AF Statton Best on Ground Medal was awarded to Joshua Hand (SA), with Trent Heffernan being named as SA’s best and Thomas Curtin from
University AFC claiming the same honour for WA.
WA coach Wayne Langborne was extremely proud of the playing group, with nearly all players being eligible for the Carnival in Tasmania next year.
“Our backline was under immense pressure with great games being produced by Brent Luckman, Brett van Gronigen and Mitchell Gill,” Langborne said.
“Our wingmen in Chaz Flint and, after half-time, Gordon Alone, were outstanding and with limited opportunities Zac McCarry at full
forward gave us a focal point. Tom Curtin was in everything and thoroughly deserved our best player award.”
The West Coast Eagles State Amateur Colts suffered the same fate at the hands of the WAFL State 16’s last Saturday, eventually being beaten by 64 points.
Looking to finish their program with a win, the West Coast Eagles State Amateur Colts play this Saturday, June 14 against the WA Country Football League in a curtain-raiser game before the West Coast and Gold Coast clash at Patersons Stadium at 12 pm.
The WA Amateur Football League would like to thank all the players and support staff for their time, effort and dedication, ensuring the program remains one of the best amateur football programs in Australia.
The WAAFL A-Grade had a bye on Saturday, June 7.

Esperance Bulldogs have continued to their authority on the Esperance & Districts Football Association with an empathic 68-point win over Newtown-Condingup to remain unbeaten so far this season.
Esperance forward Ryan Neill was the leading forward with four goals, while Chris Harding and Ben Sullivan were named among the best. Newtown-Condingup Lions were well-served by Tom Withers and Michael McArthur who battled hard in a losing effort.
Seven goals to Darryl Mogridge helped Ports to a hard fought 25-point win over Gibson and moved them a game clear in second place. Ports best players
were Mogridge, Tim Barber and Luke Weaver, while Aubrey Jacobs was prominent with three majors. Trent Moon, Ashley Bowman and Kingsley Walker all were solid contributors for the Gibson Tigers.

Can You Help? For three seasons during WW2 (1942-1944), the WAFL competition was restricted to players aged less than 18 years as at October 1, 1942.
Of the 587 players known to have debuted in this period, WAFC historians are missing a date of birth (and often other details) for 149 players.
Each week the Football Budget will list the playing records for eight of the players for whom birth and other details are sought.
These include:
Stanley John BROWN (East Fremantle 1942, 1945, 17 games)
C. DATSON (West Perth 1943, 2 games)
Joshua Arthur Henry DOWNEY (Perth 1942, 6 games)
A. GEARY (South Fremantle1944, 10 games)
Arthur William HERBERT (South Fremantle1943, 17 games) – died 1995
E. JOHNSON (West Perth 1943, 2 games)
Patrick J . MURPHY (Subiaco 1944, 1 game)
Ronald Charles SCOTT (Swan Districts 1944, 1 game)
Any information that could help establish contact with or lead to full particulars being obtained on these players would be welcomed by WAFL historian Greg Wardell-Johnson ([email protected]) or Judy Chalmers (9381 5599) at the WA Football Commission.
