Wassup in Jet Division! On March 2, 2013, La Quinta KIWIN‟S dedicated their Saturday for the Muscle Walk at the OC GreatvParks! Members set up food booths and designed posters for the local walkers to show their support and dedication. Later, La Quinta KIWIN‟S showed off their enthusiastic spirit by waving team posters and shouting club cheers for the walkers! After the race, members proceeded to break down booths and placing them in trucks. Then members drove back home to La Quinta after their long day volunteering at the OC Great Parks.

-Jessica Tran, La Quinta KIWIN’S Vice President

Even though the morning

was a bit cold, nothing can warm up La

Quinta KIWIN‟S than volunteer-ing for the New-port Mesa Spirit

Run! On March 3, 2013, members arrived at Fashion Island in Huntington Beach and were transported to

different drop off stations where they cheered and acted as route coordinators for the runners. As usual, the run was fast-paced which pumped up the members to show off their spirited side to the incoming runners. After the race ended, all of members returned to the start line

and helped put away tables and chairs. Later, the mem-bers drove back to school after a long, productive day!

-Jessica Tran, La Quinta KIWIN’S Vice President An annual event, the 5K Fun Run was held at the Fountain Valley Sports Park (a conjunction of the recreational center andmile square park) this year. Like previous years, most of the run-ners who signed up were local and the event proceeds went to benefit

various community groups like FVHS Choir, FVHS ASB and FVHS PTSA. FV KIWIN‟S, along with a few other volunteer groups such as LQ KIWIN‟S and FV Key Club, came to help out at the event. A total of 21 FV KIWIN‟S members happily at-tended the event to lend a helping hand to their community. After signing in, the members were split into two groups that either went to a random point on the track to or to the finish line. They offered their services by coming to help out with set up, cheering the runners on during their intense run and handing out water to keep the runners hydrated. When the race ended, the members stayed to help with clean up by going around the track area and picking up cones. The event was not only fun for the runners but also for these hard working Barons.

- Vi Kim Pham, Fountain Valley KIWIN’S Publicist

On Saturday, March

23rd Our KIWIN‟s

members went to the

Segerstrom Concert

Hall to volunteer at

the Pacific Sym-

phony‟s Cinderella

Performance, featuring the cello. We were split up into

several different teams, each heading a certain mini-

game booth. Some members passed out programs in

the front, while others passed out seat cushions to kids.

But, majority of our members were in charge of three

booths. The Life Saver activity was a game that taught

kids how to use bows. After this booth, they could move

on to the Cello booth, where they picked up a cello and

tried it out themselves. If they didn‟t want to do any of

these, they could go to the puppet making booth and

create their paper bag puppets. Upon leaving, they re-

ceived conductor‟s batons as a parting gift. It was great

seeing all of their delighted faces.

Wassup in Jet Division! To celebrate a beautiful

Easter holiday, La Quinta

KIWIN‟S volunteered at the

Easter Egg Hunt spon-

sored by the Huntington

Beach Kiwanis! On March

30, 2013, members drove

to the Huntington Beach Sports Complex where they managed

several game booths for the children, such as the ring toss, ping

pong balls, whack-a-mole, and so on. Members passed out

game tickets as rewards for the kids who won games at their

booths. La Quinta KIWIN‟S also managed a ticket booth where

the kids exchanged their newly won tickets for a variety of fes-

tive prizes! Later the kids actually had the chance to hunt for

colorful Easter eggs filled with different candies! After the event

was over, members picked up trash around the sports complex

grounds and drove back to La Quinta High School after a beau-

tiful day at the Easter Egg Hunt.

-Jessica Tran, La Quinta KIWIN’S Vice President

On a bright and sunny March 9th, La Quinta KIWIN‟S volunteered at the Spring Literacy Fair! Members

helped set up different kids‟ games booths all over the fair. Then the members themselves played along with the kids, such as blowing bubbles, throwing beanbags

in baskets, spin-ning the prize

wheel, and other endless activities!

Members also gave out little

prizes to the little kids and food and beverages to the other fair goers.

After the event, La Quinta KIWIN‟S folded up the chairs, tables, and cleaned up the prizes and toys. Later the members drove back to school after an eventful and

productive day with the little kids! -Jessica Tran, La Quinta KIWIN’S Vice President

On March 22rd on the FVHS Campus was their annual Club Culture Fair! This Food Fair gave Fountain Valley KIWIN'S an opportunity the chance to raise money not only for DCON preparations, but also for the 2013-2014

KIWIN'S year. First, our members helped set up our booth at 3 pm. As the fair begun, our members continually took shifts for KIWIN'S, selling Lucky Chinese Food, Light Sabers, and host-ing a game that everyone could enjoy. As the sun set in Foun-tain Valley, our members kept selling food, advertising our booth, and smiling happily to everyone. When all the food, light sabers, and people had empitied out of Fountain Valley High School's campus, we cleaned up our club's area and head for home. Although our members were drained and barely had any more energy left, they had stayed dedicated and motivated the entire night. We had raised over $300 dollars and also had a very memorable night.

-Manuel Santiago, Fountain Valley KIWIN’S President

On March 9, 2013 La Quinta KIWIN‟S drove to our local Mile Square Park and volunteered at the Thomas

House Run for Homeless Children Walk! Some mem-bers were as-

signed to the food station, where they

had to slice or-anges and ba-

nanas for the local runners. They also passed out granola

bars and water bottles! The rest of the members acted as route cheer-ers and showed off their enthusiasm as they cheered

away during the race. La Quinta KIWIN‟S was also ac-companied by our fellow Fountain Valley KIWIN‟S, so it was a good bonding experience for both clubs. After the

race ended, members cleaned up the fruit, folded up tables, chairs, signs! Members drove home refreshed

from the productive event! -Jessica Tran, La Quinta KIWIN’S Vice President

CLUB PROJECT OF THE MONTH: La Quinta

La Quinta KIWIN‟S decided to dedicate their Saturday morn-ing to help pack food for the hungry! On March 23, 2013, members drove to the Stop Hunger warehouse in Santa

Ana. As they pulled on their gloves and red hair nets, mem-bers started packing oats, dried vegetables, and rice into specially designed bags. Once packed in bins, runners grabbed the boxes and placed them in the next station,

where they were weighed and boxed. Every time members heard the gong, it signaled that the volunteers packaged 1,000 bags. Throughout the three hours, we heard about nine gong signals which meant 9,000 bags of packaged

food! After the last gong, members proceeded to clean up the equipment and work stations and later drove back to

school.

MANATEE OF THE MONTH: Jar-Yee Liu

Who is Jar-Yee Liu? Jar-Yee is a sophomore in high school who just happens to be in a club called KI-WIN'S. For the past year, Jar-Yee hasn't been the member with the most hours or the one who is the most outgoing. He is someone who a young KIWIN-NER should strive to be. Jar-Yee used to be a mem-ber who would go to event every once in a while, but he soon learned that KIWIN'S was the club for him. He later learned to grow out of his shy shell and evolve into a member that always either has a happy, smiling face or working his hardest to photo bomb every single picture. Not only am I proud to say that he is a friend who is always glad to have your back, but I am also proud to have someone so dedicated to volunteering and the work of KIWIN'S be in our club.
