Summer Job

Looking for a summer job, my 18-year-old daughter arranged interviews at several day-care centers. At one meeting, she sat down on one of the kiddie seats, no simple task for most people. The interview went well, and at the end, the day-care center director asked the standard question, "Can you give me one good reason we should hire you?" "Because I fit in the chairs." She got the job.

After asking if there were any more nominations, Dave Morgan made a motion to close the nominations. Carol Burwash seconded the motion and it was approved. The slate of candidates was approved unanimously by voice vote. See page 8 for photos and names. These positions are effective 10-1-16. Relay for Life – Pete Buckley reported that Tuscola Ford was holding a Douglas County Relay for Life fundraiser to benefit the American Cancer Society. $20 will be donated for every test drive on Friday, 5/6 from 11AM to 5:30PM.

Pete has Luminaria bags and paper cupcake graphics for sale to honor a cancer survivor and/or a person who lost his/her fight. Sign-up sheets are going around for the June 4 event to walk, to donate an auction item, donate treats/drinks to sell at our tent, and to work the Kiwanis tent. If you would like to help and cannot sign up at a meeting, contact Pete. Traveling Gavel – The Clinton members delivered Lt. Governor Charles Smith’s gavel. The gavel was disguised as a palm tree.

This interest has become a life-long hobby of collecting antique hand tools. Stan considers anything that is an extension of your hands, a hand tool. Stan brought about 40 different tools, and members got an opportunity to identify them before Stan described each item and its use. The program was fun and educational! Below is a one of the tools and a display of half the tools that he brought.

Program:

Maribeth Opperman introduced our speaker, Alison Cler. She is the Administrator at the Tuscola Health Care Center. Alison has been in health care for

about 30 years, 5 years in her current position and 25 years as a nurse. She spoke about the Volunteer Hospice Program at the facility.

Alison started her speech saying that dying is not an easy topic for many people, and that being a hospice volunteer is not for everyone. It can be a rewarding experience for those who can and choose to do so.

Hospice care has changed from care for just the last few days or weeks, to officially six months. But with today’s terminal care conditions, hospice care can be for weeks, months, and occasionally years.

Some patients have little or no support from family or friends regardless of the reason. They suffer from loneliness as much as their condition. Alison feels that no one should be alone during the his/her passing.

Alison is recruiting more hospice volunteers for the facility. Volunteers must fill out an application, have a background check, and then attend a class. The volunteers are not involved with the patient’s medical or physical care. When visiting, they provide a calming presence by sitting with the person, talking, maybe reading or singing, whatever works. Volunteers set their own schedule and are assigned to a patient(s). If a volunteer cannot come when scheduled, Alison asks that he/she makes a courtesy call to the facility.

On average the facility has 5-8 patients on hospice care out of about 56 total residents. If you would be interested in more information and/or would like to be a volunteer, contact Alison at 253-4791.

Program:

Jerry Reynolds introduced our speaker, Jim Crane. Jim is the Douglas County Engineer and has been very involved in the Cronus project.

The Cronus project is proceeding with the pending general contractor’s contract almost at completion which will lead to finalizing the project’s financing. Jim advised that the road work is divided into three segments. There will be road work at Routes 36 and 45 by IDOT. Douglas County personnel will do the required work on local roads. The plan was designed to have as little as possible impact on utilities and residential property. The planning included how to do road work that will withstand the heavy loads that will travel to the Cronus site during construction, and still be in useable condition when construction is completed. About 10,500 loaded concrete trucks will be accessing the site during plant construction. The plan also addresses drainage issues. To help the flow of traffic during construction, there will be some temporary traffic signals. When tall loads come into the site, the traffic lights can be uncoupled to clear the overhead height, and then put back immediately after the tall load goes through.

TUSCOLA KIWANIS CLUB 2016 MAY BOARD MEETING MINUTES

The meeting was called to order at The Smith House on Wednesday May 11, 2016 at 12:00 PM by President Jerry Leonard with the following officers, club directors and guests present: X Tammy Baer – Past Pres X David Butler – Pres Elect Guests: X Carol Beals (2017) Jan Chappell – Vice Pres X Char Bontrager Maureen Bergeson (2018) Jim Hausmann (2017) X Carol Burwash Margo Blaudow (2016) X Candy Hudson – Treas X Pat Damler Pete Buckley (2016) X Jerry Leonard – Pres X Mike Damler X Janet Butler – Secy X Jerry Reynolds (2018) X Tim Hoel X Carol Martin

The following items of business were conducted:

1. Minutes of April Board Meeting – David Butler made a motion that the minutes be approved as presented. Jerry Reynolds seconded the motion and it was approved. Copy of Board meeting minutes are on club website under “Members Area.”

2. April Secretary’s Monthly Reports – Janet Butler had emailed Board members copies

of the monthly Tuscola Volunteer Hours report and the Kiwanis International monthly report for their review. There was a total of 907 hours reported – 141 fundraising and 766 service. Carol Beals made a motion to approve the reports. David Butler seconded the motion, and it was approved. Copies of the monthly reports are on club website under “Members Area.”

3. April Treasurer’s Monthly Report – Candy Hudson had emailed Board members a

copy of the monthly treasurer’s report. As of 5/11/16, the current balance is $20,083.46. Janet Butler made a motion to approve the report. Tammy Baer seconded the motion and it was approved. Copy of treasurer’s reports are on club website under “Members Area.”

4. Disbursements/Reimbursements – Mike Damler requested reimbursement of $113.35

for pizza that had been provided for a Key Club meeting to thank the Key Clubbers for all their help at this year’s egg hunt. There was a great turnout for the pizza meeting, and Mike praised the efforts and work of the officers, directors and members during this school year. David Butler made a motion to approve the request. Jerry Reynolds seconded the motion and it was approved.

5. New Donation Requests – None

6. Club Foundation Update – Janet Butler provided an update. Treasurer Candy Hudson has opened a checking account for the foundation, and deposited $500.00 from club funds. With the assistance of Tammy Baer and David Butler, Janet has submitted the 1023-EZ form to the IRS, requesting 501c3 status for the foundation, and Illinois State forms CO-1 and CO-2 requesting not-for-profit charity status. When both approvals are received, the club’s service funds will be moved to the foundation checking account. The administrative funds will remain in the club’s checking account. The last step is to request sales tax exemption from the State of Illinois for the foundation.

7. Community Blood Services – This organization had asked if the Tuscola Kiwanis

Club and Key Club would partner to hold a blood at the high school sometime this summer. After consulting Mike Damler who spoke to Key Club Faculty Advisor Darcey Helmick, it was determined that there would be issues with building availability during the summer, and Key Club member assistance. Jerry will advise his contact that a summer blood drive at the high school is not feasible this year.

8. Skip-A-Meal – As previously discussed last month, Kiwanis International

discontinued the official Skip-A-Meal program that benefited the Children’s Fund. KI requests that clubs continue to support the Children’s Fund through whatever method each club chooses to do so. After discussion, Janet Butler made a motion that the Board designate July for 2016 as the club’s Skip-A-Meal Children’s Fund project. As in the past, members don’t really have to skip a meal. Beginning with our July 11 meeting, the “lunch ladies” will have an envelope for any member who would like to donate; members are asked to donate a typical cost of a lunch. After the end of the month, Treasurer Candy Hudson will send a club check marked “Children’s Fund” to KI in early August.

9. Pancake Breakfasts – Pat Damler reported that after expenses, the club netted about

$1,200.0 from our April 2016 breakfast. Discussion continued about a date in 2017. Due to Easter being April 16, 2017, it was agreed that having the pancake breakfast in April was not feasible. Based on discussion, Pat Damler will reserve Forty Martyrs Hall February 25 or March 4, 2017 for our early in the year pancake breakfast. Pat will report back when a date is confirmed.

Discussion continued regarding the Homecoming Weekend Pancake Breakfast on Saturday, October 8, 2016 at the community building. Char Bontrager said that she had learned a lot from Pat in organizing and preparing for the April breakfast, and would be the chairperson for the October breakfast. Char will form a core committee and is looking for a co-chair. Jerry Leonard will announce at our next meeting. If you are interested in co-chairing or being on the committee, contact Char.

10. TCHS Kiwanis Scholarship Eligibility – A question had come up from a member regarding the club’s scholarships and required input by the Board. The question was, “Are the club’s scholarship’s only available to TCHS graduating seniors?” As stated on the application, one of the requirements for eligibility is for the student to be a graduating senior from TCHS. After discussion, Carol Beals made a motion that the requirements for eligibility remain “as is.” David Butler seconded the motion and it was approved. Janet Butler will inform the inquiring member.

11. 2015/2016 Club Recognition Awards Nominations – Janet Butler had provided Board

members with an updated nomination form for their review. No further changes were required, except to add the chairperson to the bottom of the form. Discussion brought forward some possible chairpersons. Jerry Leonard will check with the Kiwanian whose name came to the top. The chairperson will then form a committee with another 2-3 members to evaluate the nominations. Evaluations and recommendations must be completed by the August 10 Board meeting. It was suggested that one member of the committee from last year (Carol Beals, Jan Chappell, and Dennis Opperman) be asked to serve on the committee. David Butler volunteered to be a committee member. Jerry L. will report back to the Board.

12. Peanut Days - Carol Burwash confirmed that Kim Higgins and she will co-chair

Peanut Days again this year. Dates were discussed. Board members wanted to know the dates for the Rural Life Antique Show. Janet Butler volunteered to procure the dates. Finalizing this year’s dates was tabled for next meeting. [Subsequent to the meeting, Donna Kidwell advised Janet that her show would be November 11 & 12.]

13. One Stop Community Christmas – Janet Butler reported that she and David become

aware of this charity event through a program speaker at the Charleston Kiwanis Club. One Stop is a collaborative effort by many different area organizations to provide many items to low-income families in early December each year. It was held at Lincoln Land College in Mattoon in 2015, and serves low-income families from seven counties, including Douglas County. Items that families receive are toys, family fun games, puzzles, blankets, pajamas, books, paper products, cleaning supplies, personal care items, socks, underwear, diapers, a Christmas food dinner, etc.

Organizations’ members can provide items, volunteer to help customers, help man a table, load vehicles, etc. The Butlers helped at the sock table that is hosted by the Mattoon Kiwanis Club with assistance from the Charleston Kiwanis Club.

To attend this event, low-income families must register and meet eligibility requirements. There are a number of places to register each November, including a Tuscola location. During registration, families provide documentation for eligibility and information about their family such as how many persons are in the family and their clothing and sock sizes. Families cannot attend the event if they are not registered.

Some possibilities that the club might pursue were discussed for the 2016 event, such as providing the opportunity for individual Kiwanians to volunteer time for the event, promoting the event in Tuscola with flyers, newspaper coverage, etc., so more Tuscola families can take advantage of the event and possibly providing resources so Tuscola could have more than one day to register for the event…possibly at The Douglas County Health Dept., SAM Pantry, and/or ERBA. Board members were interested in more information, and asked about someone coming to the club to present a program. Janet Butler will contact the head of the event, gather more information, and report back to the Board in June.

14. Next Board Meeting – The next Board meeting will be Wednesday, June 8 at the

Smith House at noon. 15. Adjournment – There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 12:56

PM. Submitted by:

Janet Butler – Secretary
