Business highlights June – November 2007

Following the first KIEF board meeting during the Sopot Convention in Poland, and Governor-elect training in Texas, preparations for the training of our incoming officers at our convention in Reykjavik 14.-16 of September, became a priority.

The final touches on the work ahead was also an important issue to be dealt with, with the good Gent training of my District Secretary (Inga) and Treasurer (Svavar) being a vital factor in the preparations for an exciting year.

There is great enthusiasm within our District and our aspirations for the promotion of the Kiwanis ideals was very evident at our District convention and officer training sessions.

Several amendments to our by-laws were approved, but the main theme was our national K-key tri-annual fundraiser.

A €2.500 grant was given to ABC Children’s Aid, an Icelandic relief organization, who’s mission is to offer durable aid to abandoned and destitute children in Asia and Africa in the form of education and a home where needed. This falls in line with the KEP project.

It was also an honor for us to welcome good Kiwanians from abroad to our convention, Giampaolo and his wife. Kari and husband and Roy Bird, and we hope that they enjoyed their short stay in Iceland.

Board Meetings:

Meeting twice a month the District Executive Board has met three times and we’ve already had two full District Board meetings, the first at our convention and the second on October 20. Four more Board meetings are scheduled. The meetings were good and I am optimistic for a great team of dedicated Kiwanians turning things for the better this year.

Club visits:I have attended change of officer’s ceremonies in six clubs and one division and Board representatives attended other. I want to tell you about a special event I attended Saturday October 6th. It was the 40 year anniversary of KC Helgafell in the Westman Islands, a small island of the South-coast of Iceland. KC Helgafell is the largest club in Iceland with 86 members in a community of 4000! Can you match that?? The celebrations started with a traditional change of officer’s ceremony. What was untraditional about it was that it took place in a lava field from the famous 1973 eruption and 16 meters below us, were the remains of the first clubhouse owned by a KC in Europe. In the evening there was a great party with five new members inducted into their ranks. Our aim is to visit every club and division every two years, giving clubs in need of special assistance more attention.

Membership: We will be emphasizing internal club activities, membership growth, and establishing new clubs. With 20 of 37 clubs reporting September figures, our starting number for this year seems to be 936 members. According to KI we are only 806. These contradictions are very discouraging especially due to the fact that we have been working hard with Gent and KI to make corrections to KI/KIEF dues payment, but even so clubs are being revoked and suspended left and right. Also KI is sending a wrong signal to the membership in how we’re doing in attaining our 1 million member goal. According to the “official” numbers we are failing miserably, which is far from the truth

District Convention: Preparations for our convention in Sauðárkrókur 30-31 May 2008 are well under way. For the first time in years we will have a spring convention, and adjustments to the new timing are constantly becoming apparent and being dealt with.

Umdæmið Ísland -Færeyjar kiwanis.isKiwanisChildren’s Kiwanishelmet Safety Project: In next days ar we going to sign a 3 year contract with “Eimskip”, the biggest shipping company in Iceland, for continued sponsorship of our national Kiwanis Helmet Project. This will guarantee that every 7 year child in Iceland will get a safety helmet in the foreseeable future.

Umdæmið Ísland -Færeyjar kiwanis.isKiwanisK-Day 4.-7. október 2007All around Iceland selling of the Kiwanis K-day key was undertaken on 4-7 October. Preparations by the K-day committee had taken many months, culminating in a great session at our convention. Press coverage of this event was extensive and Kiwanis positive exposure as never before, e.g. becoming evident by many new members being attracted to Kiwanis at the beginning of the year. As in the past mental health issues were targeted, and the fund drive planned to coincide with 10 October as World Mental Health Day. Proceeds have not been tallied but we expect that €250.000 - €300.000 can be given to the three beneficiaries targeted this year.

It is under constant revision, and regular updates of various materials (forms, reports, minutes, by-laws etc.) are being introduced to make it the educational and information tool it should be.
