Message from the Lieutenant Governor

Welcome to a new Kiwanis year!

It is certainly an honour and a

privilege to serve as your

Lieutenant Governor for 2014-

2015. I thank each and every

one of you for your confidence in

electing me to the highest

position in the Division.

These are exciting times to be a Kiwanian as we move

forward with three main goals for the 2014–2015

administrative year:

Rejuvenate our clubs. We are going to be placing a

great deal of emphasis on getting our clubs

back to full strength, so I ask you to assist your

Presidents in encouraging those members

whom you have not seen for some time to

come back to club meetings and re-immerse

themselves in the Kiwanis fellowship.

Additionally, in order to keep our clubs

buoyant, we must be constantly on the

look-out for potential new members who can

make a significant contribution to their

communities and to your club.

Eliminate. We must continue to support the

Kiwanis International Eliminate Project.

Remember, no contribution is too small to

make to this worthy worldwide project. While

Maternal Neo-natal Tetanus may not be

prevalent in the Caribbean, I encourage you to

visit the following Kiwanis website and view

the various videos to get a better appreciation

of how this ravishing condition afflicts babies

and new mothers.

http://sites.kiwanis.org/Kiwanis/en/ theELIMINATE-

project/newresources.aspx

Celebrate the 100th anniversary of Kiwanis. The

celebration of this historic milestone will take

place at the International Convention in

Indianapolis, Indiana, USA on June 25 – 28,

2015. In the meantime, we must ensure that

we make this milestone as visible as possible

during the year through our stationery,

website, Facebook, apparel and branded

projects.

This year all clubs are expected to support The

Formula, our new global strategic project. The

Formula is a member-led, multi-year initiative that

focuses on Kiwanis members, investing in the Kiwanis

experience and ultimately strengthening

membership. It’s an opportunity for us to shape the

future of our clubs and the service that impacts our

communities. The Formula is based on a simple

premise: When you love something, you want to

share it. When something really matters, you want

other people to love it with you. You want it to be

more than something you “do”—you want it to be

part of your life. To properly embrace The Formula,

we must be prepared to change our way of thinking.

Some of you may have heard of the saying “If you

always do what you have always done you will

always get what you have always got.” Let us be

more creative and bring some fresh thinking to the

way we conduct our fellowship meetings,

conceptualize and implement Club projects and in our

fundraising activities to support our community

projects.

At the launch of The Formula in June 2014 in Toronto,

Past International President Steve Siemens suggested

Message from the Lieutenant Governor

this strategy for effective personal change which has

resonated with me and I share it with you:

When you change your THINKING you change your BELIEFS.

When you change your beliefs, you change your EXPECTATIONS.

When you change your expectations, you change your ATTITUDE.

When you change your attitude, you change your BEHAVIOUR.

When you change your behaviour, you change your PERFORMANCE.

When you change your performance, you change your LIFE.

We have assembled a great Divisional Team for 2014

– 2015 which is presented on page 2. I thank the

members of the team sincerely for accepting to work

with me and for you. I have already asked the

Presidents not to hesitate to contact any member of

the team to assist them with any issue related to the

team member’s area of responsibility.

The Distinguished Club Criteria 2014 – 2015 and the

Criteria for the Lieutenant Governor’s Quarterly

Ribbon have already been communicated to all

Presidents. Knowing the competitive nature of the

clubs in Division 27, these criteria would already

have been discussed with you.

I have also sent each President the updated Youth

Protection Guidelines and asked them to discuss the

Guidelines at fellowship meetings and to ensure that

each member who has been assigned to be a

Kiwanis Advisor to K-Kids Clubs, Builders Clubs, Key

Clubs or Circle K clubs conform to the requirements.

These guidelines were developed by Kiwanis

International as a result of a few unfortunate incidents

and once followed should serve to protect both

members of the Sponsored Youth Programme and

Kiwanians.

I invite you to make a special effort to attend at least 2

of the planned Divisional Council Meetings (DCM)

which are scheduled as follows:

November 22, 2014 - Fort De France,

Martinique

February 28, 2015 - Castries, St. Lucia

June 6, 2015 - St. John’s, Antigua

September 26, 2015 - Bridgetown, Barbados

I wish to acknowledge the continuous support I have

received over the past years in Kiwanis from my good

friend Past Lieutenant Governor Elridge Thompson.

PLG Elridge sponsored me as a member of the Kiwanis

Club of Bridgetown 25 years ago, initiated my

candidature for Treasurer, Club Director, President-

Elect, Club President and now, Lieutenant Governor.

PLG Elridge is no longer able to attend club meetings

on a regular basis because of health reasons, but I

wish to publicly thank him for his great support and

mentorship over the years and his continued loyal

friendship.

Finally, I wish you a successful year, full of exciting

projects, great fellowship, outstanding achievements

and fun.

Yours in Kiwanis.

Message from International President

Dr. John Button

“THE WAY AHEAD”

Scattered across Canada’s north are primitive stone markers, Inukshuks, erected by the Inuit people to show

the way ahead in the harsh desolate Arctic. Inukshuks symbolize cooperation, balance and the idea that

teaching and group effort are greater than individual effort. The Inukshuk’s strength is in its unity. For Kiwanis,

the message of the Inukshuk is about our dependence on one another and the value of strong relationships. It

reminds us of our responsibility to invest in our effort today and to direct a better way ahead for all of us

tomorrow as we strive to reach our goals and attain our vision. In our centennial year, while we reflect on our

past, it’s more important to focus on our future. That’s what this year is all about: The Way Ahead. And the

Inukshuk—that beacon of hope—is our symbol.

The Eliminate Project and The Formula are vital components of our way ahead. The two initiatives have a

unique synergy. When one succeeds, they both succeed. The continuing success of our Eliminate Project is

growing and expanding Kiwanis, and membership strength drives our service to new heights. The elimination of

maternal and neonatal tetanus will be the finest achievement of our first 100 years. Yet, there’s much to do.

And it will be done. No baby should be allowed to die when we have the power to save. No woman should die

because she has given life. We are showing mothers, their children and the world the way ahead to a healthier

future. Let’s get the job done!

The Formula is all about the way ahead. Love Kiwanis. Share Kiwanis. Live Kiwanis. I fully expect the early

success of this campaign to multiply in its first full year. As we mark 100 years, 2014–15 will be a year to

celebrate our members who have made this milestone possible. The party will begin with a celebration-themed

Rose Parade float and continue with a number of stops around the Kiwanis world. I’m particularly excited about

our stop in Detroit in January to celebrate the Detroit Kiwanis Club No. 1’s 100th birthday. It will be a party you

won’t want to miss.

Join me this year as we complete our promise to eliminate MNT, strengthen our membership, expand our reach

and celebrate Kiwanis like never before as together we travel The Way Ahead.

Yours in Kiwanis Service,

John Button Kiwanis International President , 2014-15
