2010 District Convention Message

August 13-15, 2010 Holiday Inn Convention Center in Omaha We have a GREAT District Convention planned with education, entertainment and activities for all members of the family. You can register online at www.ne-ia.kiwanisone.org or by mail using the registration form on page 9. Following are some of the highlights of this years District Convention:

1. Twelve Reasons to attend the 201 0 District Convention - Starting on page 4, this newsletter highlights 12 reasons for attending the District Convention.

2. World Wide Service Project Announcement – Two mem-bers of the NE-IA District traveled to the Philippines to see first hand why this project was chosen. They will share their insights and experiences with you.

3. Educational Workshops – In addition to the General Ses-sions, we have 24 breakout workshops planned with topics ranging from SLPs (e.g., K-Kids, Builders Club, Key Club, Circle K or Aktion Club), Distinguished Club planning, club growth for service, community analysis and online informa-tion mining via the NE-IA District website and KiwanisOne.

4. Special tributes to our veterans and those who died this year - Saturday, August 14 is the 65th anniversary of VJ Day and we have a special tribute planned for our veterans, especially those who served in WWII. On Sunday, at our Memorial Service, we will remember those Kiwanis members who have died during the past year.

5. Keynote Speaker is Dr. Tom Osborne - We remember Tom for his football accomplishments at the University of Nebraska and for his service as a US Representative in Congress. However, he is also an advocate for youth, as evidenced by his co-founding and leadership of Teammates, one of the largest and most successful youth mentoring programs in Nebraska.

6. Fellowship, Camaraderie and Fu n - One of the greatest benefits of a District Convention is meeting with old friends, making new friends and learning what other clubs do for service and fund raising while enjoying the camaraderie of Kiwanis.

We look forward to seeing you in Omaha at the 2010 District Convention.

Anticipated Voting by the House of Delegates

The House of Delegates will be voting on the fol-lowing items at the 2010 District Convention in Omaha: Election of Officers for 2010-2011 2010-11 Governor - Gus Dornbusch is the

current Governor-Elect and will be nomi-nated as the 2010-2011 Governor.

2010-11 Governor-Elect - Marvel Dunaway is the current Treasurer and will be nominated as the Governor-Elect for 2010-2011.

2010-11 Treasurer - Bob Mitchell will be nominated as Treasurer for 2010-11.

Possible District By-Law Change Kiwanis International approved an amendment at the KI Convention in Las Vegas to allow for a position of Vice-Governor. As a result, we antici-pate a motion from the Board of Trustees to amend our By-Laws to allow for the position of Vice-Governor (in place of Treasurer). By-Law amendments require a 60-day lead time and notification of the proposed amendments to all clubs. If the Board of Trustees approves the submission of this amendment to the District Secretary, all clubs will be notified and it will be submitted to delegates at the next convention.

Bob Mitchell Nominated for NE-IA District Treasurer

The nominating committee of the NE-IA Kiwanis Dis-trict is pleased to announce that Bob Mitchell is a candi-date for the office of District Treasurer for the 2010-2011 year. Bob has been a member of the Ki-wanis Club of Des Moines (Downtown) since 1984. He is also a member of the Kiwanis Club of Ankeny, which he

was instrumental in opening in 2006. In addition to serving on many committees, Bob has been Treasurer and President of the Downtown Club, and has been Assistant Treasurer since 2006. He served two terms as Lt. Governor for Division 16 in 2004-05 and 2005-06, the latter with distinction. In addition, Bob was the site coordinator for the Dis-trict Conventions in 2003 and 2005. In 2007, Bob and his wife, Jan Burch, began coordi-nating the creation of the Kiwanis Miracle League, a rubberized surface baseball field for children with special needs. In July of 2007, Bob was named the President of the Kiwanis Miracle League and continues in that capac-ity. Since inception, local clubs as well as the Ne-braska-Iowa district have supported the field. What began as a “dream” has become a local “field of dreams” for nearly 200 children today. Bob and Jan reside in West Des Moines, Iowa where Bob has been active in the community serving three years on the Friends of the Library Foundation, in-cluding one year as President. Bob is a life member of Kiwanis International, a life member of the Ne-braska-Iowa Foundation, a Legion of Honor member, a Hixson and a Hixson Ambassador. Bob and Jan have attended seven International Con-ventions, as well as most district conventions held in the past ten years. Jan is currently serving as Lt. Governor of Division 16. Bob earned his undergraduate degree in Economics from the University of Iowa. His Master’s degree in Education is from Iowa State. Bob and Jan are both consultants in Human Resources and have been certified Senior Professional Human Resources by the national accrediting organization, the Society of Human Resource Management.

Our museums are world-class as well, including the Joslyn and the Durham Western Heritage – both close to downtown and a short 10-minute drive from the hotel. While you’re in town, take advantage of some of the local festivals and entertainment that are scheduled during your stay. Below is a sampling, but for a more complete listing of activities and events, go to www.visitomaha.com. Jazz on the Green: A very popular Thursday night staple in Omaha located at 31st and Dodge which is Midtown Crossing. It’s well worth coming in early to take ad-vantage – bring your own refreshments, blanket or lounge chair and settle in for a great relaxing eve-ning under the stars. Midtown Crossing is located just east of Mutual of Omaha. Go to www.omahaperformingarts.org for more informa-tion. Anthony’s Steakhouse and the Ozone Lounge: This is the site of our Friday evening social and dinner, Anthony’s is considered by many to be Omaha’s best steakhouse. Just blocks from our hotel, the restaurant’s Ozone Lounge features live music nightly. Thursdays are “Smooth Jazz” nights, while the weekends feature popular local rock bands for the younger crowd. So after our Fri-day evening entertainment, stop by the Ozone for a nightcap, and feel 15 years younger! See www.anthonyssteakhouse.com for more informa-tion, including the latest entertainment lineup. Art in Bloo m Festival: The ever-popular Botani-cal Gardens, which is located in the same neighborhood as our zoo and Rosenblatt Stadium, features several incredible festivals throughout the year, including this one on August 14-15. In addition to live music, there are walking tours of the magnificent gardens, and children’s activities. What a great place to head after our conference wraps up Sunday morning. For more details, see www.omahabotanicalgardens.org.

Reason #1: City of Omaha

For the second consecutive year, Omaha is host-ing the Nebraska-Iowa Kiwanis District Conven-tion, with activities scheduled between Friday, Au-gust 13 and Sunday, August 15. Plan to arrive early – or stay later – because Omaha is truly a great Midwestern vacation desti-nation. Popular attractions, all easy driving dis-tances from the Holiday Inn Central, our confer-ence headquarters, include the Henry Doorly Zoo, the Old Market, and Boys Town (remember the 1938 Hollywood classic with Spencer Tracy and Mickey Rooney?) The city is home to corporate giants ConAgra (and it’s 28 food brands such as Healthy Choice, Orville Redenbacher and Hunt’s) , Mutual of Omaha and Warren Buffet’s Berkshire Hathaway. About 500,000 people call Omaha home – a city which was just named one of the top ten livable cities in the United States. Take the new pedestrian bridge across the Mis-souri River, stroll through downtown’s Central Park Mall, Heartland of America Park and Lewis and Clark Landing, all part of our back-to-the-river de-velopment. As you’re enjoying the views of our skyline and the river, notice the nearly-finished Ameritrade Stadium, the new home for the famous College World Series starting in 2011. Omaha has great shopping complexes, too, from the quaint Village Pointe, at 168th and Dodge, which features upscale shops in a “main street” environment, to the more traditional enclosed malls like the Westroads, Oakview and Crossroads.

If you haven’t heard her regale an audi-ence before, you’re in for a pleasant sur-prise, truly a rollick-ing evening. Mary spoke at the Kiwanis Tribune Din-ner in Omaha last fall. Afterwards, one Kiwanian after another came forward and sug-gested we recruit her for this year’s convention -- so we did! Mary’s deadpan humor focuses on the comic tra-vails of everyday life. Whether she’s talking about proper football game etiquette, seating in church, or life in general on the Great Plains, Mary knows how to bring down the house. Maxwell, who lives in Omaha, began speaking publicly about 40 years ago. As time passed, she has been honored for her public speaking and vol-unteer activities. In 2006, a caricature of Maxwell became the 109th face on the ballroom floor at the Omaha Press Club – an honor reserved since 1971 for the most well known politicians and civic figures in our com-munity. A visit to the Press Club will find her caricature hanging among the likes of Bob Devaney, Tom Osborne, Warren Buffet and Johnny Carson – as well as a host of former mayors, congressmen and other newsmakers. In her talks, Maxwell suggests that few things in life are worth worrying about. “It’s a light-hearted look at life.” Mary will “take the stage” and have you smiling right after supper. Afterwards, you’ll carry that smile on your way back to the hotel – and throughout the weekend. Don’t miss it!

Reasons to Attend the NE-IA District Convention from August 13-15, 2010 Fourth Annual Bal-loon and Wine Festi -val: What a fun combi-nation – hot air balloons and wine tasting! This “uplifting” event is scheduled for August 13-14 at the First Na-tional Bank Park , 144 and West Dodge Rd. Stop by Friday before our convention begins and shop the market for arts and crafts. Gates open at 5. Or witness the beautiful lumines-cent balloon glows, starting at 9 p.m. both Friday and Saturday. There will be live enter-tainment until 11 p.m. as well. Live outdoor music featuring the Fish Heads: An extraordinarily popular local rock band, the Fish Heads will help you top off a great Saturday evening following our banquet and induction. Lo-cated literally two minutes by car north and east of the Holiday Inn, this fun and lively outdoor concert will be at the new Ak-Sar-Ben Village, 67th and Center Streets. Take a gander at all the incredible developments on the site of the former Ak-Sar-Ben racetrack, includ-ing the new College of Business Administration for the University of Nebraska at Omaha, set to open this fall.

Reason #2: Mary Maxwell Featured Entertainment for Friday Dinner

It may be Friday the 13th, but you’ll be one lucky Kiwanian if you register for our Friday reception, dinner and entertainment at Anthony’s Steak-house. If you’re one of the thousands of people throughout the Midwest who have heard Mary Maxwell light up a crowd, you’ll be delighted to know that we have her booked for our Friday eve-ning entertainment.

Reason #4: Partner’s Tour Saturday Partner’s Tour

A deluxe motor coach awaits our Partners for the special day of touring and shopping on Saturday. After enjoying light refreshments at the hotel in the morning, your “carriage” will transport you in style to the Joslyn Art Museum, Omaha’s premier visual arts attraction. Your docent will provide a guided tour, and plenty of time will be allotted to return to explore your favorite galleries. Landscapes from the Age of Im-pressionism are the featured ex-hibits. This is a captivating exhi-bition of 38 paintings, including many of the finest examples of mid nineteenth- through early twenti-eth-century French and American landscape in the Brooklyn Museum's collection. Ranging in date from the 1850s to the 1920s, the works presented offer a broad survey of landscape painting as practiced by such leading French art-ists as Gustave Courbet and Claude Monet and their most significant American followers including Frederick Childe Hassam and John Singer Sar-gent. Lunch will be served in the museum’s Café Dur-ham, which is catered by Omaha’s premiere cater-ing company, Abraham Catering. Owner Hap Abraham is a Kiwanian with the Omaha, Inc. club. Following lunch, we’ll tour the city of Omaha a bit on the way to Boys Town. Driving past the home of the “Oracle of Omaha,” Warren Buffet, we’ll con-tinue west through beautiful neighborhoods and vibrant urban areas.

Upon arriving at Boys Town, we’ll tour the campus and learn the story of the organization’s founder, Fr. Flanagan.

Reason #3: Field Club Friday Golf Tournament

The Field Club is one of the most scenic private courses in eastern Nebraska, and is a short five-minute drive from our hotel at 36th and Woolworth Ave. In 1905 the Field Club was host to the first Ne-braska State Golfing Championship. As the years passed, the Club continued to grow and develop and better settle into its role as one of the area's finest, producing even more happenings of interest such as:

The 45th National Amateur Golf Tournament was held at the Field Club in 1941, won by Bud Ward.

Field Club was the home course of Johnny Goodman, winner of the National Open Champion in June 1933. In 1937, Johnny Goodman was the United States Amateur who won the United States Open.

The Field Club has hosted the Nebraska State Women's Tournament and the Women's City Golf Championship.

In 1997, the Field Club hosted its first Interna-tional Tournament, the Women's Trans Na-tional Senior International Four-Ball Champi-onship.

Field Club's rich heritage is the result of more than a century of dedicated members and personnel, along with great neighborhood and community support. To find out more about this pristine par 67 course, go to www.fcomaha.com.

Reason #5: Keynote Speaker Dr. Tom Osborne

Dr. Tom is an extraordi-nary advocate for youth, as evidenced by his co-founding and leadership of Team-mates, one of the larg-est and most success-ful youth mentoring programs in Nebraska. Osborne is the current Athletic Director for the University of Nebraska. He was the head coach for the Cornhusker football team for 25 years, from 1973 – 1997. After coaching, Osborne was elected to Congress in 2000, and served six years in the US House of Representatives, representing Ne-braska’s third district. As a coach, Dr. Tom won three national champion-ships, 1994, 1995 and 1997, as well as 13 confer-ence championships. His teams made 25 con-secutive bowl appearances – one for every year he coached. The Cornhuskers amassed an amazing 84% win-ning percentage during his tenure. ESPN named Osborne the “Coach of the Decade” in 1999; he won Coach of the Year honors in 1994. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1999. After completing his time in Washington, DC., Os-borne was named NU’s Athletic Director on Octo-ber 16, 2007. He named Bo Pelini the head coach of Nebraska in December of that year. Tom and Nancy Osborne founded the Teammates Men-toring Program in 1991 in an effort to provide support and encouragement to school-aged youth, starting in the fourth grade. The goal of the program is to see youth graduate from high school and pursue post-secondary education.

The Village of Boys Town, incorporated as a Ne-braska municipality in 1936, has its own police and fire departments, schools, churches and ball fields - along with numerous historic venues. A National Historic Landmark since 1985, the Vil-lage of Boys Town is now the only National His-toric Landmark District in Nebraska. The Village also serves as Boys Town’s national headquarters, as well as the headquarters for Boys Town Nebrask a/Iowa – the organization’s flagship region. The Boys Town National Research Hospital’s West Omaha facility is also located at the Village. One of Nebraska's top attractions, Boys Town’s beautiful campus is a living history of the dream of Fr. Flanagan. Here, you can experience the breathtaking Dowd Chapel and Father Flanagan Tomb, and tour the Hall of History to discover how Boys Town has sparked a revolution in child care. From small families to large tour groups, the Vil-lage of Boys Town is a memorable, moving place for everyone.

After our Boys Town tour, it will be time to head even further west for some great shopping at Vil-lage Pointe. Enjoy a stroll along Davenport Street lined with lush and colorful landscaping. The complex truly has a “village” feel – with old fashioned outdoor window shopping as you meander from store to store. Retailers include Ann Taylor, Banana Republic, Chico’s, Christopher & Banks, Coldwater Creek, Gap, J Crew, Talbots, and many others. Our tour bus will return to the hotel with ample time to rest and refresh before the evening’s fes-tivities.

An added feature this years convention is our Kiwanis Hospitality Ser-vice -- stop by for helpful suggestions and recom-mendations about where to go, what to see, and how to get there while in Omaha.

To reach this goal, youth meet one hour per week with a caring adult who serves as a mentor. Mentors are volunteers from the community, in-cluding Kiwanians, who have dedicated them-selves to making a difference in the life of a young person. Mentors give youth a sense of hope, pur-pose and vision. The Teammates Mentoring Program currently pro-vides a mentor for over 4,000 youth across Ne-braska and Iowa. Seventy communities across Ne-braska and a half-dozen in Iowa sponsor Team-mates chapters, and communities in other states are looking to replicate the program. Teammates has demonstrated that mentoring rela-tionships can result in improved academic perform-ance and attendance, as well as fewer behavioral problems.

Reason #8: Volunteer Fair

It was a hit at Mid-Year so we’re doing it again. Thanks to Omaha, Inc. for organizing the volun-teer / non-profit organization fair. What a great way for Kiwanians to learn more about our community organizations and to explore additional avenues for volunteerism and club ser-vice projects.

Reason #7: Entertainment A Little Night Music

RON COOLEY: Friday eve-ning, we’ll be entertained by Ron Cooley during the social hour at Anthony’s. Cooley’s career as a guitarist and com-poser spans five decades. Touring highlights include performing on NBC’s Today Show and Tonight with Jay Leno, ABC’s Good Morning America, the Regis and Kathy Lee Show and for President Clinton at the national Christmas Tree lighting ceremony in Washington, DC with Mannheim Steamroller. He has appeared at the Wolftrap Theater in DC, and also as a solo artist at the Kennedy Center. To date, Ron has six solo recordings spanning an eclectic blend of instrumental jazz, pop, classical and contemporary acoustic guitar compositions. He currently is working on his seventh major pro-ject. DAN MCGLYNN TRIO: On Satur-day, a trio headed by Dan McGlynn will entertain us during the social hour and dinner. Dan got his start in music with a tour-ing USO show band that entertained troops in Japan, Korea and the Philippines. He later toured with the Sandpi-pers and performed alongside Merv Griffin, Mike Douglas and Pat Boone. Locally, Dan has appeared with the Omaha Sym-phony and has played many “Jazz on the Green” concerts. He still plays with Resurrected Swing, a popular 17-piece band. Iowans beware! For the past seven years, Dan has written for Huskerpedia under the name Husker Dan. His Husker Dan columns appear monthly in Omaha-area newspapers.

Reason #9: Education

Kiwanis conventions are always a great opportu-nity for experienced and new Kiwanians to learn more about the Kiwanis family, service opportuni-ties and club operations. An outstanding lineup of workshops have been as-sembled, allowing participants to choose from breakout sessions that appeal to them the most. A number of these sessions are returning by popu-lar demand, while others will be new. Sessions that will surely be well-attended include:

Learning more about your District Foundation.

Understanding reporting and general club op-erations responsibilities, featuring our District Secretary, Frank Murphy.

Hearing what’s new with our junior member clubs, including K-Kids and Builders Clubs.

Getting a solid understanding of how Kiwanians

Reason #10: Veterans Tribute

When Bill and Evonne Williams heard about the national Honor Flight movement, they wondered aloud why Nebraska was not par-ticipating. After considerable research and personal commit-ment, they decided to take on this effort for the state of Nebraska. Their efforts ensured that every WWII veteran in the state who wanted to go could fly for free to Washington, DC to experience the new WWII Me-morial first hand. In “Rendezvous With Destiny,” a moving documen-tary about their efforts, edited especially for the Kiwanis convention, photojournalist Peter Soby tells the moving story of one couple’s commitment to serving our WWII vets. The Williamses put in countless volunteer hours of fundraising and event planning for the seven Heartland Honor Flights that took over 1,500 Ne-braska veterans to DC in 2008 and 2009. This video will highlight our luncheon program Sat-urday. The program will include a special recogni-tion and tribute for all veterans in attendance.

A stirring tribute to all Kiwanians who are vet-erans of foreign wars, but especially to our

WWII veterans on Saturday, August 14 which is the anniversary of VJ Day

Nebraska Governor Dave Heineman honored Bill and Evonne for their selfless efforts to organize the

hugely popular Heartland Honor Flights.

Reason #11: Haiti Adoption

An awe-inspiring story of overwhelming compas-sion, international diplomacy and political intrigue will send convention-goers home inspired with an uplifting message of hope – and challenged to re-spond to the ongoing needs of suffering children in Haiti. The story of Kris and Scott Heaton of Roca, Ne-braska, is remark-able. The couple had already endured three years of holdups and bu-reaucratic snafus in their attempt to adopt two chil-dren from Haiti. During those years of anxious waiting, Scott and Kristin had visited Haiti every three months to check on Bettania and Dieunette and take supplies to the orphanage.

A Nebraska couple’s stirring saga of their efforts to adopt Haitian children will highlight

our memorial program on Sunday.

Reasons to Attend the NE-IA District Convention from August 13-15, 2010 They were just days from flying to Haiti to pick the children up for good when the earthquake struck. Earthquake damage to the orphanage where the girls lived made getting the children out of the Hai-tian capital of Port-au-Prince a dire priority. Bettania, Dieunette and 53 other orphans were left with little food or water and had been sleeping out-side on the orphanage patio because of damage to the building. Through the tireless efforts of American workers at the orphanage, and several government officials, including Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell, all the orphans were flown to Pittsburgh, where fami-lies throughout the United States lined up to adopt them. This high-profile rescue was made possible by the easing of immigration requirements between the United States and Haiti for orphans who were al-ready in the final stages of adoption. This immediately affected 900 children. Kristin and Scott flew to Pittsburgh to receive the girls in the first of several airlift rescues made possible by the US Air Force. The Heatons first got to know Dieunette when she was six months old and suffering from an ailment that left her brain partially exposed. They volun-teered to host her while she underwent surgery in Omaha. Afterwards, she returned to her mother in Haiti. Then, in September 2008, a powerful hurricane swept through her town and the baby’s home was washed away. Her mother could no longer care for the child and put her up for adoption. Today, tens of thousands of children are believed to be still or-phaned in the quake, and their fate remains un-clear. In addition to relaying their harrowing story, the Heatons will appeal for ongoing support for the still-orphaned children of Haiti. (This summary was comprised from information reported in the New York Times, The Omaha World-Herald, KETV, and the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review).

Reason #12: Silent Auction Auction Proceeds Benefit District Foundation

We all know how exciting auctions can be. It’s even more exciting when the proceeds go to benefit our favorite charity -- Kiwanis! The work of the Ne-braska-Iowa District Foundation is criti-cal to the mission of our organization. The foundation has provided important financial support for scores of worthy causes. One of its major fund raisers is this auction, which promises to be bigger and better than ever, with dozens of unique and interesting items up for bid. Popular past items have included household col-lectibles, sports memorabilia, sporting event tickets and various pieces of art. And something new this year – the Past Lt. Gover-nors’ Association, under the able leadership of Past Governor Rev. Mark Holmer, has taken on the responsibility of facilitating this year’s auction. All former Lt. Governors (and current ones, as well!) are encouraged to identify an item for the auction. Actually, all Kiwanians are encouraged to submit auction items – from Nebraska football tickets to Iowa University sports apparel -- the more items the merrier! And be sure to attend Friday’s dinner at Anthony’s to get a sneak preview of the major items up for bid. And don’t forget that checkbook on Saturday! As they say, bid early, bid often. To submit items for the auction, click on the link here for the donation form and instructions. Items should be identified by August 6. Questions can be sent to Rev. Holmer at [email protected].
