A WORLD PREMIERE
MUSICAL ADVENTURE
ADRIENNE ARSHT CENTER PRESENTS
The invention of the airplane by Wilbur and Orville Wright, one of the greatest stories in American history, comes to life on the Arsht Center stage! Kitty Hawk brings to life the creation of world-changing technology at the opening of an exciting new century. At the center of the theatrical story are two talented, yet modest, Midwestern bicycle shop proprietors, whose inventive labors and achievement transform them from small-town youngsters into international celebrities. Wind, sand and a dream of flight brought these two lively brothers to Kitty Hawk, North Carolina where, after experimentation, they achieved the first successful airplane flight in 1903. With courage and perseverance, these self-taught engineers relied on teamwork and application of the scientific process. What they achieved changed our world forever!
Kitty Hawk will wow students and educators with its captivating story of two brothers and their persistence to explore the world of flight. Specifically designed for seventh-grade students, the musical highlights the themes of ingenuity, persistence and love of discovery at a very important time in their cognitive development.
Kitty Hawk was created by Tom Bryant with music and lyrics by Erik Della Penna.

LEARNING THROUGH THE ARTS “KITTY HAWK”, A STEAM* INITIATIVE Learning Through the Arts is a first-of-its-kind partnership between the Adrienne Arsht Center and Miami-Dade County Public Schools.
Since May 2010 approximately 25,000 local fifth-graders—more than 1,000 classes total—have been invited every year to attend a live performance of Rock Odyssey at Miami’s premier performing arts center.
Now in its 8th season, Learning Through the Arts has:
brought 200,000 M-DCPS fifth-grade students
from more than 7,000 classrooms
in more than 3,500 buses
to the Arsht Center to see a free live performance of Rock Odyssey.
Accompanied by curriculum-aligned lesson plans, Learning Through the Arts is expanding annually to reach over 26,000 seventh-grade students.
The Adrienne Arsht Center hopes to further expand Learning Through the Arts over the next five years, with the goal of ultimately reaching 100% of the county’s fifth, seventh and ninth graders. This would provide arts-integrated learning for more than 75,000 young people each year, enriching their studies, enhancing their exposure to the arts and culti-vating their creativity.
WHY STEAM?
Improves memory, cognition, critical thinking and creativity
1 in 5 STEAM college students decided on their major in middle school
It is the most effective way to close the achievement gap
Provides the skills and literacy for a changing world
OBJECTIVES
Improve STEAM instruction
Increase and sustain youth engagement with STEAM
Better serve groups historically underrepresented in STEAM
HOW DO WE CLOSE THE GAP?
According to the NEA, Hispanic and black students are less exposed tothe arts than their white counterparts. Kitty Hawk seeks to deliver an arts experience to 100% of all seventh graders enrolled in public schools.
Of approximately 26,000 M-DCPS seventh-grade, almost 69% are Hispanic and 21% are black.
Hispanic and black populations are two under-represented groups in the STEM fields.
