Kite Aerial Photography by Gerome Soriano geromesoriano.blogspot.com Sampaloc, Manila on top of Beato Angelico building UST attempt largest human cross Aerial Photographs taken with a Kite lifting a DSLR camera! How does he do that! First I fly a kite. A huge kite. Around six foot tall and 3 foot wide. When it is up in the air, I observe the wind. If the wind is stable enough and the kite is puling hard enough. Then we proceed to attaching the rigged camera unto the kite line then let out more line. The camera then is lifted by the kite unto to the stratosphere and I control the rig remotely with a remote control. Controlling it's pan, tilt and shutter. Is that not dangerous! Of course it is! That's why it's fun :) But it's not dangerous as most people think it is. The kite used for kite aerial photography is quite stable and predictable. Plus we take great care not to attach the camera when the wind is unstable. Are you crazy! A bit :) But search around the internet and you'll find that there are a couple of people already doing this in Europe and America. It's just not that famous here in the Philippines. Currently I am the only one doing it with more frequency. A kite-flyer and kite-maker friend of mine Eric Basit is also doing it from time to time. Then my mentor Dr. Jun Tripon did it during the film days. Then the folks at Kite Association of the Philippines also do it from time to time. DSLR! can you not use a lighter cameras. Yup :) I can use lighter cameras but for now I prefer DSLRs because that is what I have and that is what I can borrow from my friends (yup! some of my friends are crazy enough and trust me enough to allow me to send their DSLRs up to the air via the kite!). And it's more fun. Why don't you just use drones. I am interested in trying those things especially with the fast developments happening to them. But I believe the drones tend to scare off children while kites which are colorful, wonderful and childlike attracts people of all ages. I have several experiences of people coming up to me and helping me out. Observing what I do. Posing to the camera. I think drones don't have that same effect. Because of their hissing sound and their scary rotors and their potential of carrying weapons.
