1. MEASURE THE SIZE OF YOUR KITCHEN

You need to know the size before you can decide on the design and layout. The following Guide will detail “how to measure” including Kitchen Shack cabinet sizes. It is quite simple to measure your room but remember to measure the windows, architraves, appliance spaces and all other kitchen elements. This is the very start of the planning and no need to stress any measurements are great and can always arrange for a check measure after design.

2. ANALYSE YOUR KITCHEN SPACE, LOOK AT WHO USES THE KITCHEN AND HOW YOU ALL WORK TOGETHER, INCLUDING:

• Do kids do homework at the breakfast bar while you cook?

• Does your kitchen double as a laundry?

• Do you enjoy cooking? Careful consideration on appliances is needed.

• How many people use the kitchen at the same time?

• Do you entertain? Then larger bench spaces would be important.

• Can you use existing power point, gas and water locations to save money?

3. DESIGN

The kitchen working spaces are key in all good kitchen renovations. Put simply this means analysing your key work areas - prep space, sink, fridge, stove. Basically any area that you use constantly the design will need to work around for ease of reach and cooking. Maximising your storage space when designing is another key – you can never have enough. You can choose to draw up your kitchen using a blank piece of paper or a grid template in this guide if you are keen however, most prefer to leave this stage to the Kitchen Designer Professional when you book an appointment.

Finally, and most importantly, don’t forget the all important budget. You need to decide how much you have to spend on the kitchen including trades and appliances if they need upgrading – we can help you with your complete kitchen renovation including appliances to save you money and time!

4. DELIVER, INSTALL THEN ENJOY!

Kitchen Shack kitchens come fully assembled which saves time and money. For a much easier and faster solution 95% of customers use Kitchen Shack Recommended Installers to do the hard work to save even more time and headaches. Following will guide you through measuring and designing your kitchen space.

4 SIMPLE STEPS TO YOUR NEW KITCHEN

5

PLANNING YOUR NEW KITCHEN RENOVATION IS KEY TO A GREAT KITCHEN SPACE. SPEND TIME IN PLANNING AND YOU WILL BE HAPPY FOREVER. HERE IS OUR 4 EASY STEPS FOR YOUR KITCHEN PLANNING:

STEPS

HOW TO MEASURE

Using a quality metric tape measure that remains rigid when extended is ideal. A good hook end on your tape measure is also helpful for accuracy. A digital handheld laser device can also be used to provide accurate measurements.

Start by drawing the shape of the room for the new kitchen using a blank piece of paper or grid template at the end of this guide.

When you measure write down all measurements in millimetres ‘mm’ and avoid rounding up or down to numbers finishing in 0 or 5. This will allow all measurements to be accurate on your final plans.

Don’t take measurements off existing tiles, make sure you work back to wall surfaces. Failure to do this can affect measurements by 20mm in some cases.

Doors

All door measurements should include the architraves. Mark the door size, width and height as well as the width of the architrave on your plan. It is also a good idea to show the direction of which way the door will open.

Windows

Window measurements also need to include architraves. Also note existing window coverings that may remain as sometimes these can be bulky and should be allowed for on your plan.

Include the distance from the floor to the bottom of a window and then the top of the window to the ceiling.

Walls

Walls need to be measured in both width and height. Remember to measure the bulkhead to ceiling and bulkhead to floor measurements. Nine out of ten times the bulkhead is removed for installation of overhead cabinets. Plasterers will then plaster this space following installation.

Appliances

The size of all appliances including fridge, oven, cooktops, microwave, rangehood, sink and tap will need to form part of these measurements ensuring accurate height, depth and width.

MEASURING YOUR SPACE

MEASURING FOR A NEW KITCHEN IS AN ESSENTIAL PART OF THE DESIGN PROCESS. ONCE YOU HAVE COMPLETED YOUR MEASUREMENTS AND GATHERED AS MUCH INFORMATION AS POSSIBLE, INCLUDING SKETCH AND PHOTOS OF YOUR SPACE, BOOK A FREE DESIGN AND QUOTE OR VISIT OUR SHOWROOM AND TALK WITH ONE OF OUR DESIGN PROFESSIONALS.

It can be helpful if you have a second person - one who writes down the measurements and the other to hold the tape in place. Most measurements can be accurately measured by one person.

TIP

CHECKLIST

When measuring a wall with a door and or windows, always take the full overall wall measurement as well, then double check by adding the individual measurements of the doors, wall and windows.

These totals should equal that of the overall measurement. Note the position of the current sink waste on the wall or floor.

It’s important to also mark the waste, hot and cold water outlets and the position of existing appliances that you plan to use in your new kitchen.

Don’t forget all electrical power points, light switches and any phone or other outlets in your space.

DESIGNING AND PLANNING

Once you have measured your space, take photos of your existing kitchen and collect images of other styles you like.

Next step is to book a free design in-store appointment and one of our Designers will design and quote your brand new Kitchen Shack kitchen in 3D.

The more information and photos you take to the appointment the helpful it will be for our Designer during the planning process.

KITCHEN LAYOUTS

LAYOU

TS

THE KITCHEN LAYOUT IS AN IMPORTANT PART OF THE KITCHEN DESIGN.

STRAIGHT KITCHEN

One long wall for cabinets with an open space facing.

The layout will determine how easy your

kitchen works for you both to cook in as well as

socialise in your kitchen. That is why the layout

of your appliances, sink, fridge and preparation

areas is so important.

When you think of cooking in your kitchen each day you know the areas you visit the most. From the fridge to preparing and cooking on the stove and then carrying hot items to the sink - all these need to be in easy reach. The placement of cabinets for ease of reach when cooking as well as benchtop space for cutting and preparing is all integral components that require careful thought.

The following are the most common layout options.

GALLEY KITCHEN

Two walls opposite each other with a wall through on either end.

kitchenshack.com.au

L-SHAPED KITCHEN

Two walls that form an L shape and often used in open style kitchen.

U-SHAPED KITCHEN

Can be wide or narrow and often long, usually with 2 walls and a return.
