KITCHEN DESIGN AND INNOVATION
TRENDS REPORT
TREND-MONITOR provides a flexible, cost-
effective way to access the latest consumer
insight, trend analysis and market data for kitchen,
bathroom and surface brands.
Looking beyond the latest design and colour fads,
Trend-Monitor studies how kitchen, bathroom
and surface products are purchased and utilised
by UK consumers, as well as assessing how the
bigger social, demographic, environment and
technological trends will influence our home life
in the future and impact on our product choices.
The pace of innovation within the kitchen industry
is phenomenal and this is never more obvious
than when visiting the big trade shows such as
CES in Las Vegas, LivingKitchen in Cologne or
Eurocucina in Milan.
In its truest sense, innovation means providing
ideas out of the blue, leading to significant
discoveries and achievements, and it was tempting
to include in this report everything new, interesting
or exciting that we’d seen on our travels.
However, at Trend-Monitor we take a more
focussed approach and our starting point is
always the societal shifts that influence the way
we use our kitchens. From here we highlight
how manufacturers, designers and innovators
are reacting to these shifts, not just within the
kitchen industry, but also with an eye on the wider
environments.
Innovation is an iterative process and with this in
mind we have no hesitation in featuring products
that are still at development stage. These early
prototypes are nonetheless significant and earn
their place in this report by addressing a strong
consumer need or requirement for the kitchen
space.
The seven key trends featured in this report are
relevant to changing consumer attitudes which
impact on kitchen behaviours, and it is interesting
to note the way in which these trends interact with
each other and how a number of the innovations
have the ability to address more than one trend
at a time

TECHNOLOGICAL ADVANCES ARE BEING MADE IN SOPHISTICATED DEVICES TO HELP CONSUMERS BETTER UNDERSTAND THE LIFECYCLE OF THE FOODS THEY HAVE PURCHASED AND THEREBY REDUCE THE AMOUNT OF FOOD THEY WASTE.
Research carried out for
Whirlpool EMEA, found
that in the UK we have a
tendency to buy and cook
too much, and then forget
about our actions, letting
food linger in the fridge or
cupboard until it becomes
inedible. In fact, the research
reveals that about a third of
all food produced is either
lost or wasted through poor
planning.
Appliance manufacturers
have taken these statistics
to heart and are doing
much to combat our
wasteful food habits.
Hotpoint’s Fresh Thinking
for Forgotten Food 2018
campaign with Jamie Oliver
aimed to tackle ingrained
consumer behaviour, as did
Grundig’s Respect Food
programme with Massimo
Bottura.
However, these campaigns
were aimed at promoting
the brands’ refrigeration
innovations to keep food
fresher for longer, and
upgrading their appliance
is not necessarily the first
step a consumer will take
in their attempt to reduce
their food wastage.
Here we show examples of
innovations that are quick
and simple ways to engage
with consumers at a time
when they are first starting
to consider how they can
reduce the amount of food
they waste.

Mimica Touch Freshness Indicator
Users of these accessible freshness indicator
labels only have to touch them to find out
whether food has gone off. The gel inside
the labels is calibrated to degrade at the
same rate as the food within the packaging,
and the labels feel bumpy to touch if the
food has spoiled. The label is activated as
soon as it’s attached to the packaging and
is said to be accurate to within a few hours.
This means that extra-cautious expiry dates
can be ignored, and food that is still edible
will not be discarded prematurely, saving
resources for both retailers and consumers.

Aimee
The Aimee device is designed to enable any
fridge to become a smart hub. Hands free
with voice control, it offers a visual hub to
control home devices such as Alexa, Nest,
Philips Hue and IFTTT. It’s also possible to set
timers, watch recipe directions, receive recipe
recommendations and notifications on soon-
to-expire foods, as well as the ability to auto-
reorder groceries. Its intelligent camera is no
bigger than a kiwi fruit and can be installed
inside the fridge so users can keep up to date
with what food they have at home.

Silo Smart Pantry
The Silo system features
Alexa-powered voice control
and tracks the kitchen’s food
contents, monitoring both
what’s added to supplies, and
also what’s used. It then sends
alerts when food is about
to expire and needs to be
consumed.
It comes with patented
containers that deep-vacuum
and seal food to prolong
freshness, and the makers say
it can keep leftovers fresh for 2
- 5 times longer.
There is also an accompanying
app to help with food tracking
and inventory management.

According to the Love Food Hate Waste
campaign approximately 7.3 million tons of food
was wasted in the UK in 2015, and in 2016 a House
of Commons enquiry found that the average UK
household lost £470 a year through avoidable
food waste.
Food waste not only impacts on consumer’s
personal finances, it also amounts to a major
squandering of resources, including water,
land, energy, labour and capital, and needlessly
produces greenhouse gas emissions, contributing
to global warming and climate change.
However, although research by JWT shows that
79% of consumers are increasingly conscious
of their personal impact on the planet and 92%
report that they are trying to live more sustainably,
this is countered by different studies that suggest
people fail to take to action within their own home
unless that action is taken in small steps.
By ‘nudging’ consumers into behaviour changes
with low cost applications, they are being started
on a purchasing journey towards larger appliances
that they may otherwise never take.

THE CONSUMER REQUIREMENT FOR KITCHEN TECHNOLOGY IS APPLIANCES THAT CREATE A SIMPLER COOKING, CLEANING OR WASHING EXPERIENCE
Continued advances in
kitchen technology ensures
that the way we use our
kitchens and interact with
our appliances is constantly
evolving.
As manufacturers strive
to get ahead of the
competition, the needs
of the consumer can be
neglected in the race
towards the ‘smartest’
kitchen appliance.
In reality, the consumer is
looking for technology that
makes life easier for them.
And that includes devices
that work seamlessly
together and saves them
time in the kitchen.
These innovations are
examples of new devices
that put timesaving and
convenience at the heart of
the technology.

KitchenAid Cook Processor Connect
This all-in-one processor was unveiled at CES in Las Vegas in January and
enables users to create multi-step meals with one small appliance. The list
of tasks it can perform includes boiling, frying, steaming, stewing, kneading,
chopping, mincing, pureeing, mixing, emulsifying, whipping and stirring.
It is the ultimate multi-tasker and can stir vegetables as they sauté while the
user is free to perform another task, and the integrated scales weigh food
as it’s added to the pot, no measuring cups required. There is also step-by-
step cookery guidance while preparing meals with a collection of recipes
available on the Yummly recipe platform.

Sharp introduces Alexa to its Smart Range
Sharp has introduced voice-controlled
operation across a range of its appliances
– a 75-litre oven, a four-door fridge-freezer,
a 15-place setting dishwasher and a 10kg
washing machine. This enables the user to
perform a hands-on task with one appliance,
while using voice control to operate another,
reducing valuable time spent cooking and
cleaning. As an added convenience, the
Smart oven also provides access to 150 auto
cooking options, while the washing machine
has extra time-saving benefits in that it can
calculate and distribute the correct dose of
detergent for up to 20 washes, and re-order
detergent when it’s run out.

Whirlpool Connected Hub Wall OvenThe latest innovation from Whirlpool is said to act
as a ‘helping hand in the kitchen’, providing recipe
suggestions based on preferences, as well as
cooking instructions, while maintaining the family
calendar, to the extent that if it spots a 45-minute
window for the family to have dinner together, it will
suggest a quick recipe that suits the occasion.
In the place of a traditional glass oven door, it has
a 27inch transparent LCD interface, which displays
recipes, as well as video instructions via the Yummly
platform. The Co-ordinated Cooking programme
enables several recipes to be followed at once, and
pace them so they are ready to be plated at the
same time.

Electrolux SenseFry Induction HobCooking great tasting food with perfect frying
results can be a test for most consumers’ cooking
skills. The new Electrolux SenseFry hob has sensors
which accurately measure the temperature of
the pot or pan within 1°C and adjust the power as
needed, letting you know when the pan is ready to
start cooking.
The SenseFry hob comes with assisted cooking
programs. On the intuitive hob touchscreen, the
user can simply select the type of food to be cooked
and the SenseFry identifies and maintains an even
temperature across the surface of the pan to deliver
the best frying results
The user no longer needs to guess when the pan
is at the right temperature for frying a steak or
pancakes. The assisted cooking programs adjust the
temperature when cooking and help the user to feel
more confident in the kitchen.

‘Buying Time’ is a key consumer trend. And
a recent study by YouGov highlighted
the greatest appeal of smart appliances
was that ‘they make my life easier’
(See Trend-Monitor Report ‘Understanding the
Kitchen and Bathroom Consumer in 2019’)
Financial pressure and economic anxiety in
today’s world has intensified the need to work
more and for longer, placing greater restrictions
on personal downtime.
In addition, non-standard employment hours and
the increasing number of people working from
home has meant that the lines between work and
private lives are blurred, giving the perception of
having less time, whether or not this is actually
the case.
With this in mind, time itself has become a form
of currency, as shown by the price premiums
commanded by highly efficient and effective
convenience products that better facilitate busy
lifestyles.

AS OUR KITCHEN AND LIVING SPACES GET EVER SMALLER, THE PRODUCTS WITHIN THEM NEED TO BE MORE VERSATILE AND PERFORM MORE FUNCTIONS TO MEET AN INCREASING NUMBER OF NEEDS.
As the popularity of open-
plan living continues and
our kitchens increasingly
move towards being the
hub of the household,
space becomes even more
of a premium. As well as
the cooking zone, the
kitchen may also comprise
of a dining area and a
living area, and acts as a
place where the household
comes together to eat, relax
and also entertain guests.
And for many, the kitchen
also acts as a home office
space. Subsequently the
products we decide to put
into this space have to work
that much harder.
These innovations are
examples of products that
perform more than one
role and can justify their
space in the today’s multi-
functional home.

Team 7 K7 Kitchen Island
While kitchen cabinetry is
usually static, the kitchen
island in the K7 kitchen
has a height-adjustable
top so that the island can
be adapted to a different
function or activity just
by pressing a button on
the side of the worktop.
This flexibility means that
there are essentially three
different tasks that the
island can fulfil – that of a
table to eat or work at, a
bar, or a work surface for
food preparation. It also
is available in a range of
different finishes

Light Divided by 3
As the winner of the Pure Talents
Contest 2019 at the Imm Cologne
trade fair, product designer Ilja
Huber examined the issue of
lighting moods in living spaces. His
idea was to design a light fixture
that enables individually tailored
lighting of space. His three-part
light fixture Baschnja can be split
into individual light sources and
positioned freely in the room so
that users can create precisely
the lighting atmosphere that they
want.
Each light source can be operated
independently. With the 360°
rotation function in all light
sources, the surrounding space
can be illuminated with both direct
and indirect light. When they are
reassembled, the three battery-
powered elements are charged by
the main fixture.

Despite our desire for our kitchens to be the
centre of the home, the space we are allocating
to kitchens is getting smaller. Researchers from
Cambridge University found that the UK’s newly
built homes have the smallest floor space in
Europe. This is backed up by a piece of research
carried out by LABC Warranty who analysed
10,000 floorplans of homes built in the UK since
the 1930’s and concluded from the 1980s onwards,
our houses started to get smaller. In particular
our kitchens are now 13% smaller than they were
in the 1960’s.
Coupled with the rising number of people
working from home and often in their kitchens,
as well as the growing number of multi-
generational households, our kitchen spaces
will increasingly have to be multi-functional in
order to accommodate different cooking styles,
different meal times, social/non-social areas, work
and non-work activities, all within a decreasing
amount of space.

AS OUR ENTHUSIASM FOR KNOCKING DOWN INTERIOR WALLS OR BUILDING EXTENSIONS TO CREATE AN OPEN-PLAN KITCHEN SPACE HAS GROWN, A NEW PROBLEM HAS EMERGED – NOISE.
The lack of barriers to sound
as it travels between zones
in the multifunctional space
can at best be irritating, and
at worst have a negative
effect on health.
The Quiet Mark, developed
in association with the UK
Noise Abatement Society,
is a way for consumers to
identify which products
are the quietest when
they purchase domestic
appliances.
However, products that
help to reduce noise in an
open-plan setting are now
gaining popularity, as is
‘broken plan’ living – a way
of dividing the space into
zones and creating barriers
with screens or shelving.
Commercial applications
have led the way in
acoustics and these
innovations illustrate the
cross-over into domestic
spaces.

Armourcoat Acoustic Plastic
Recently awarded The Quiet Mark Award
2019, the Armourcoat Acoustic Plaster
System is designed to ‘optimise’ the
acoustics of an interior space – either
residential or commercial – where hard
surfaces such as glass, wood and stone can
cause excessive sound reverberation leading
to unpleasant noise levels. It is made from a
special mineral wool composite panel that
is bonded onto the substrate and finished
with Armourcoat Acoustic plaster. The
system is said to have excellent acoustic,
environmental and thermal performance,
and it can be pigmented to a range of
standard or custom colours for an attractive
finish.

Friends of Wilson Panels and Screens
The Friends of Wilson range of
acoustic wall panels and screens
were originally intended for use
in a commercial setting, until
they started getting requests
for residential properties.
The collection includes the
Tesselate wall panel, which is
made from part-recycled fibre
and resembles a work of art,
and works by scattering sound
waves in different directions
The company’s screens and
room dividers can be hung from
the ceiling or attached to a wall
to help reduce noise and also
create different areas of privacy,
in the manner of the ‘broken-
plan’ style of creating zones in
an open-plan space.

Print Acoustics Panels and Doors
Print Acoustics acoustic panels and doors have
been developed to absorb sound, particularly the
reverberation in a room caused by the human voice.
Made from water-resistant MDF core board, with
a choice of top layers including laminate, veneer,
lacquer, woven vinyl or digital print finish, the panels
can be made to measure, and are shock and scratch-
proof, with the grooves and perforations in the panels
giving each its own acoustic value, and distinctive
look.
The panels can be fixed to the wall or ceiling, or used
as closet and sliding doors, or to create freestanding
elements.

There is increasing evidence that long-term
environmental noise above a certain level can
have a negative influence on health.
And until now, studies being been mainly carried
out within commercial situations.
However, with ‘Wellness’ high on the consumer
agenda, the effect of noise within the home will
become an issue as we increasingly ‘self-track’
and monitor our reactions to our environment
in our quest for a home that makes a positive
contribution to our health and wellbeing.

THE WAY WE INTERACT WITH SURFACES IN OUR HOME ENVIRONMENT IS CHANGING AND THIS INCLUDES THE KITCHEN WORK TOP
As technology moves
on, walls, mirrors, oven
doors, and fridge doors
have become ‘smarter’,
incorporating interactive
screens and becoming
more intuitive to the needs
of the user.
And the way in which we are
interacting with surfaces is
also changing. We recognise
that touch screens get dirty
and greasy very easily.
As a result, surfaces are
increasingly detecting
gestures; arm and hand
movements, and also
facial gestures.
And now it’s the turn of the
kitchen work top to become
interactive.
These innovations show how
versatile a kitchen surface
can be with the introduction
of technology.

Alfredo Häberli’s Future Kitchen display at Living Kitchen 2019
When designer Alfredo
Häberli was invited by
Living Kitchen’s organisers
Koelnmesse to design a display
at the exhibition entitled
Future Kitchen, he created an
innovative showcase of future
concepts.
Among them was the result
of his partnership with Schott
Ceran in the creation of the
ultra-thin hob concept, which
could be picked up like a tray to
be positioned on any surface,
and even outside to cook meals
or keep them warm. It was
without zones, but was able
to recognise different sizes of
pots and pans and heat them
accordingly, while the portable
element also allowed it to be
stowed away when not in use.

A key trend highlighted at this year’s Consumer
Electronics Show (CES), was the idea that any
surface of any shape can become a screen.
Products demonstrated by companies such as
Samsung who unveiled The Wall – a 219-inch

Micro LED Technology, and LG who showcased
its Massive Curve of Nature – an undulating wall
composed of OLED TVs, showed the numerous
applications and endless potential for this trend.

AN INCREASED AWARENESS OF THE LONG-TERM HEALTH RISKS ASSOCIATED WITH AIR POLLUTANTS HAS LED TO NEW WAYS OF MAINTANING AIR QUALITY BEING INTRODUCED TO THE MARKET.
The chemicals that we use to clean the kitchen can produce
harmful substances, as can indoor heating systems, while
cooking in an open-plan kitchen environment produces
fumes, smells and moisture that impact on the different
living zones.
Air pollutants can cause allergies, and also long-term health
problems. These innovations show how an increased
awareness of this has led to more and more sophisticated
ways of maintaining air quality being introduced to the
market.

destroying toxins that are
found primarily inside,
such as formaldehyde.
The curtains use a unique
technology that has been
developed by Ikea together
with universities in Europe
and Asia as well as Ikea’s
suppliers and innovators.
The way it works is similar
to photosynthesis found in
nature and the process is
activated by both outdoor
and indoor light. The Gunrid
curtains are the first product
to use the technology and
Ikea expects it to be used as
applications on other textiles.
The brand plans to launch the
curtains in stores in 2020.

Falmec Bellaria
This award-winning product from
Italian cooker hood manufacturer
Falmec is part of the company’s
move away from straightforward
extraction and into the area of air
quality control.
The Bellaria is a dimmable light
that doubles as an air-purifying
device that is said to re-establish
a healthy indoor atmosphere by
checking the air for contaminants,
and then releasing ions to purify
it. The device indicates that the
process is complete when a leaf-
shaped light indicator on the side
changes from yellow to green.
Tests have found an 85%
reduction of bacterial charge in
the atmosphere when the Bellaria
is active.

Electrolux Air Garden concept
At the latest EuroCucina, Electrolux
included an Assisted Cooking Concepts
section that focused on innovations that
the company predicted would become
part of future homes. Among them was the
Air Garden concept, where a cooker hood
positioned over a hob on an island doubled
as a shelf for an indoor herb garden. Not
only were the herbs within handy reach of
the cook at work, they served to improve
air quality in the kitchen and boost the
cooker hood’s activity as plants remove
carbon dioxide and add oxygen. The idea
was described by the company as ‘Fresh Air
meets Added Flavour’.

As with Trend No.4 Kitchen Acoustics, the air
quality in our kitchens has felt the impact of
the wellness trend having moved on from being
simply a preoccupation with home spa products
and shifting its focus to the area of health
improvement.
With this shift has come the desire for products
that monitor and control the quality of the air that
we breathe.

WHEN ELECTROLUX HELD ITS SMART KITCHEN SUMMIT LAST YEAR TO IDENTIFY KEY TRENDS , THE PERSONALISED COOKING JOURNEY WAS TOP OF THE LIST.
However, personalisation is not only about combining
appliances with voice control and enabling the user to save
recipes.
It’s about giving consumers the flexibility to adjust the way
they cook, work and eat in the kitchen at any given time.
Here are examples of innovations that enable them to make
their own unique mark on the kitchen’s usability, as well as
it’s layout and design.

Boffi Combine Kitchen
Boffi’s Combine kitchen was designed by Piero Lissoni
and unveiled at last year’s EuroCucina in Milan. It is
characterised by three functional monoblocks in different
sizes that can be combined together in a variety of
configurations to create compact islands to suit three
different tasks – food preparation, cooking and washing.
It features optional additions including extractable
tables, and extendable
snack areas that can all
be put together to be
as multi-functional as
possible. The result is
a customisable design
with modular elements
that can be moved easily
and changed according
to whatever is being
demanded of the space.

Personalisation is a trend that has roots in many
different industries and is now considered to be a
global megatrend. This has driven the consumer
expectation that we can create a truly personal
space within our home that is also flexible enough
to recognize and meet the needs of different
household members.
Today’s technology enables manufacturers to
offer customized products on a scale that has
previously been prohibitive, and this technology
will continue to allow this trend to develop and
grow.
