They have had some excellent results so farthis season including a home victory over Featherstone Roversand a fine away win at Sheffield Eagles and we are anticipating aclose and exciting game this afternoon.

JOHN RODDYJohn Roddy has stepped down from his position as Chairman andBoard Member. We are disappointed with John's decision but inview of the recent growth in his business it has been inevitablefor some time.John officially joined the Board when we were at our lowest pointand has been a steady hand on the tiller through some verychallenging times. He leaves us in a much stronger position andon behalf of the Board, coaching, playing and support staff andall our volunteers and supporters I would like to thank him forwhat he has done to help get us to where we are today.In the short term John's responsibilities will be shared by the restof the board of management.

FEATHERSTONE ROVERS CUP-TIEThe atmosphere at the Featherstone Rovers Tetley's ChallengeCup-tie was marvellous and thanks must go to club sponsors ABSundecks and Park Leisure for their sponsorship of flags and skydancers which helped enormously to add to the occasion. Paul Rowley for theCenturion MatchdayProgramme, the winshave continued tostack up. In that time, the team have come upwith a league and cup doublesuccess against Featherstone Roversand that recent hard fought win atDewsbury Rams.DP: I know we’ve a lot to cover but,Paul that was an outstandingsecond-half performance atDewsbury. What did you have to sayat half-time?PR: To be honest we just wanted to staycomposed. It was a really strong wind andthey were difficult conditions. They hadscored from an intercept, so we had noreal issues. The amount of possession theyhad – to only score one try was testamentto how resolute we were in defence. It wasa good effort from the boys.There were a number of areas that we hadto improve after the first-half such asterritory and upping completions in goodball. With that we’ll score points.

We increased that dramatically to 100percent good ball completion in thatsecond half and it tells a tale.DP: You said in the week precedingthat Dewsbury was a venue thatmade men of people and obviouslyyou had to stand up to some prettyrough-house tactics?PR: Yeah, I think that can go down in thewords of the old saying – an ugly win.Sometimes you are going to get them. Wewere prepared to roll up our sleeves. Ithink the rough-house tactics you arespeaking of is some of the treatment ourpivots had to stand up to, in particularRyan at one point. It is part of the game.The boys dealt with it and the lad gotsent-off which ultimately did us a hugefavour. They coped with it, they can acceptthat and they’ll get more of it. Fair play tothe referee. That is how you protect yourplayers.DP: It was another win and anotherone to keep the record going. Youspoke in the press about how goodit was to set that record, it must bepretty satisfying to keep it going?PR: We don’t talk about records but weknow you guys do and we read it. We areaware of it and we don’t really need to

mention it and it is game-by-game. Weknew it was going to be tough and weknow that we’ve now got a really toughfixture against Doncaster. They are one ofour nearest rivals and we are lookingforward to it.DP: Taking you back now, first of allwell done on the cup performance, itwas an outstanding result and anoutstanding game of rugby league?PR: Yeah it was a good day. The sun wasshining, the stadium was full and it wasnice to have three sides open. Credit goesto Featherstone Rovers, who brought areal buoyant crowd. It was a good gamebut I think we’ve got a lot more in us. We won a really tough encounter and Ithink we’ve got another 25-30percent togive as well. One thing I can’t coach iscommitment and spirit, heart andmentality and I think we had those inabundance. We have our confidence now and I thinkwe showed in patches that we had ourMojo and we started off with it in our firstset. We are in the next round and that’sfantastic that we are in the quarter-final ofthe Challenge Cup.DP: And the victory at Featherstonein the league?PR: Yeah we can assure you that we hadlittle emotion in the cup game. We werepretty methodical and pretty machine-likein how we went about our business. Therewere rumours about bonuses for them forthe league game, massive bonuses, too.The pressure, focus and expectation on thegame came from their end, not ours. Wewon’t allow complacency; the squad isapplying pressure all the time.Over a few years there has beendominance from Featherstone. It’s still atough place to go and in the past youconsider a win there a lucky one and aone-off rather than standard, but we aresetting our standards very high.

ML- The team’s winning run continued atDewsbury on Sunday-that was a toughafternoon wasn’t it?

OW- It was a really competitive fixture, onewe’d identified beforehand as maybe definingour season. The Dewsbury ground is very similarto Batley with the tight pitch and slope and theelements were against us first-half. I didn’t optto play uphill and into the wind- I lost the toss.So when we went in only 8-0 down in thoseconditions at half-time we were pretty happy.

In the second half we showed composure andthe final score-line looks really respectable. Weplayed the conditions better than they did. Ourforward pack dominated down the middle andTom Spencer capped a great effort from thepack with his try.

ML- Again there was a tremendousfollowing from Leigh fans.

OW- I think the Leigh fans outnumbered theDewsbury fans and again they were very vocal.Our fans are tremendous and give the team ahuge boost every game. But I’ve got to say I wasvery disappointed with some of Dewsbury fansafter the game. Some of the verbals andgesticulations aimed at the Leigh players as wewalked around the pitch after the game weredisgusting. It’s just embarrassing to hear whatcomes out of some people’s mouths. There werekids in the vicinity and that sort of behaviourhas no place in Rugby League or in society. Mydaughter comes to all the Leigh games andshe’s only two-and-a-half. I don’t want her andmy family subjected to that kind of behaviour. Itneeds policing a lot better and troublemakersejected from the ground and banned. Our gameprides itself on being a family game- we want towork hard to ensure it stays that way.

If someone spoke to me in the street or madehand gestures like they did after the Dewsburygame I’m not sure I could keep my composure.It’s great credit to the players that they kepttheir calm. There were a couple of incidents atDewsbury that we don’t want in our game.

ML- Ryan Brierley played despite the lossof his Grandma who he was very close to,that was a big effort wasn’t it?

OW - Any bereavement in a family is a sad andtraumatic time especially someone to whom youare very close. Ryan’s grandma was his biggestfan and Ryan thought the world of her. He musthave had every emotion and had every

heartstring pulled so it was great credit to himthat not only he played, but played so well. Ourthoughts are with him and his family at thisdifficult time and he knows we are all there forhim.

ML- Doncaster this afternoon are in goodform and have a great player in Player-Coach Paul Cooke.

OW - It will be nice to be back home at LSV andI understand we’ll be playing on a new surfaceafter the pitch was re-laid. There might not betoo much grass on it I understand so I’ll put onplenty of Vaseline. Paul Cooke’s a very good andexperienced player and he has put a really goodside together. We know we are in for a verydifficult game, but then they are all tough in thisdivision. It’s a tough challenge like they all therebut we shall stay focussed and hopefullycontinue our winning ways.

ML- Finally ex-Leigh prop Mark Sheals isnow a famous film star and is currentlyshowcasing his new film at the CannesFilm Festival. Which of the current Leighside might be a film star one day?

OW - I’m not sure many of our forwards wouldbe in contention. I’d have to say Liam Kay, butI’m not sure what kind of films he’d be a star in.He’s a bit of a ladies’ man is Liam.

Dashing on the field and off it, Liam Kay has been turningheads all season.He certainly grabbed Leigh's attention while on loan with Doncasterlast year, scoring a hat-trick of tries as Centurions won 36-30 at theKeepmoat Stadium."Liam was a thorn in our side that day," said Leigh boss Paul Rowley."Not only did he impress me with a hat-trick of tries, it was thevariety of them too. He hit the line like a second rower for one whileon another he showed the out and out pace of a winger."Kay has been a virtual ever-present for Leigh this season with aformidable strike rate marking him out as one of the Kingstone PressChampionship's most potent attackers.He arrived at Leigh from Wakefield Trinity Wildcats though spentmuch of last season with Doncaster."They are a good group at Doncaster," said Kay. "I enjoyed my timethere and became good friends with their coach Paul Cooke and I'mespecially looking forward to going to the Keepmoat Stadium again."But Kay is loving life with Leigh and so he should when you discoverhe has family links with the town. "My grandad on my mum's side who sadly passed away was fromLeigh so I have a lot of relatives who live locally," he said. "Andapparently I'm related to Tommy Goulden somewhere along the linebut I might have to dig a bit deeper to find out how."I am really enjoying my time with Leigh. We have such a good bunchof players here that I have been able to slot straight in."Team morale is really good and we have a great coach in PaulRowley who is there for us on and off the field. It's probably the bestclub I've been at.

"Our fans have been brilliant and have really welcomed me,especially when they've turned up in numbers for the big games likeFeatherstone and Halifax."I think we are unstoppable on our day. When Ryan Brierley andMartyn Ridyard click, the whole team clicks."In pre-season, Kay played in a variety of positions and some mayhave been surprised that he looks so at home on the wing when hewas widely regarded as a half-back. But for Kay and Rowley, wherehe plays isn't the issue."I actually don't feel out of place on the wing," said Kay. "I playedthere with Wakefield but I just like getting my hands on the ball everychance I get."Rowley believes Kay is now so important to the team that it reallydoesn't matter where he plays."I'm actually not sure of his best position," admitted Rowley. "Buthe's that good I think we could play him anywhere and he'd pose athreat. From my point of view I just want him on the field becausehe's got that enthusiasm, bravery and confidence."He's a cocky character and great in the dressing room."Kay's day job is with the Leigh Community Trust. He is the new skillspart-time social inclusion officer. The New skills programme is fundedby the Big Lottery Reaching Communities Fund and Kay works withhard to engage young adults aged 14-19 to aid transition within theirlife through sport."I was a bit nervous to start with," said Kay. "But I have reallyenjoyed it and I think it's something I would like to do when I finishplaying."He works alongside fellow Leigh players Tom Spencer and MichaelOstick. The project aims to help participants increase self confidence,helps with controlling aggression and provides opportunities intraining, employability skills and volunteering. Kay is currently working with a group of young adults from WestleighHigh School and also young adults from the young offenders team.

Continuing our series looking at Leigh players who gave their livesin the First World War, this week we remember ERNEST DOOREY.

Ernest Doorey was a tall,well-built forward who signedfor Leigh from the Firs Lane clubon 2 September 1914. Sadly, henever got his chance to play forthe Leigh first-team; the grimrealities of war put paid to thatand less than one year later hebecame one of the casualties ofthe Second Battle of Ypres. Heenlisted in the King’s Own RoyalLancaster Regiment, an infantryregiment that was at the

forefront of the intense and sustained battles betweenGerman and Allied forces in West Flanders.

Ypres occupied a strategic position during the War as itstood in the path of Germany's planned sweep across therest of Belgium and into France from the north. In the FirstBattle of Ypres in October and November 1914 the AlliedForces captured the town from the Germans. But in April1915 the Second Battle of Ypres began and marked analtogether more sinister turn of events as for the first timethe Germans used poison gas. It is recorded that the firstgas attack was used against Canadian, British, French andFrench African soldiers. It was during this battle that ErnestDoorey was killed in action on 24 May 1915.

Earlier that month (May 1915) a letter was printed in theLeigh Journal that Ernest Doorey had sent to his parents inPlank Lane. He was stationed in C Company, first BattalionKing’s Own Royal Lancaster Regiment, 4th Division, 19thBrigade British Expeditionary Force. He was described as aSergeant but the Commonwealth War Graves commissionwebsite records him as a Corporal.

“I am sorry I haven’t had much time to write to you before,”Ernest wrote. “I am just getting round after the Germangases. We have been fighting very hard around Ypres thislast week or two, as I dare say you will have read in thepapers. Ypres is all in flames and it is terrible to see a placelike this in this state. I am very sorry to tell you that Jimmy(Sergeant Finnigan, his cousin) has been wounded. I thinkhe will get home all right with it, as he has got a very niceone. I was very lucky the same day, as I got a bullet throughmy hat. But never mind, I am still going and in the pink, butI might tell you we have had a very rough time of it thispast three weeks. Well, I hope you are all going on all rightand still carrying on with the bowling and enjoyingyourselves (I don’t think). Well, I think Jimmy will be inEngland by now, and will not be long before he is home.Wishing you all the best of luck.”

The Journal reported that Doorey’s father and his three sonswere all well-known bowlers and had issued a challenge tobowl any other father and three sons in the world. Fouryears ago Ernest Doorey won the championship cup of theSpring View Inn Bowling Club. Father and sons workeddown the mine.

Sadly, the challenge never came off as an edition of theLeigh Journal of June 1915 reported: “An official communication has been received by hisparents in Plank Lane, Leigh that Sergeant ErnestDoorey has been killed in action. Sergt. Doorey, who wasonly 22 years of age and has not long been married was6ft2in in height and styled the “young giant” of PlankLane. He had been at the front since January and in oneof his letters home said he had had a narrow escape ashe got a bullet through his hat. He was a playingmember of the Leigh Football Club and one of a familyof bowlers. His death will be greatly regretted at PlankLane.”

LISA is an acronym for Leigh Independent Supporters Association,and as the name suggests is an Independent Supporters Groupfor the Leigh Centurions. LISA has been in existence for over tenyears, with the main goal of helping to finance new players tothe club which is mainly achieved by members’ contributions.

Through generous contributions by LISA members and support by Leighfans in general we have managed to help the club bring in players whowould have not normally been signed. Please see the LISA Roll of Honourpage on our website for the list of players the club have signed over theyears with the help of LISA.

Leigh v Leeds in the Challenge CupLeigh Centurions have been drawn away toLeeds Rhinos in the quarter-final of theTetley’s Challenge Cup. The tie will take placeat Headingley Carnegie Stadium on Friday 6June (8pm) and will be covered live on SkySports.

Later this year the surviving members of Leigh’s1971 Wembley Cup-winning side will have areunion based around the Heritage Weekend gameagainst Workington Town on Saturday 30 August.That 24-7 victory, one of the biggest upsets inChallenge Cup history will be re-lived many timeswithout doubt. That game remains Leigh’s last winover Leeds in the Cup. Since then Leeds have visitedHilton Park twice, in 1980 and 2006 and the LSV fora quarter-final in 2012 and run out winners on eachoccasion.

The sides first met in the competition in 1911 atHeadingley when a late try by Barron, his second ofthe game, eventually sealed the tie in Leeds’ favour.In 1923 Leeds beat Leigh 11-5 at Mather Lane witha fine try by Binks and the dribbling of the visitingforwards the highlights. Leeds returned to MatherLane eight years later when three-quarters EricHarris, O’Rourke and Smith each scored two tries intheir 24-7 win in a game that saw a player fromeach side dismissed. One year later Leigh put up aplucky display at Headingley in a quarter-final tie buteric Harris scored two of his side’s five tries andLeeds went on to lift the cup.

It was to be 1950 before the teams met again in thecompetition. First round ties were staged over twolegs in those days and two huge crowds saw Leedsedge through on aggregate. A crowd of 25,000 sawLeeds win 14-7 at Headingley and 19,500 were atKirkhall Lane one week later but Leigh’s 7-2 winwas to no avail.

In 1951 a Headingley crowd of 38,000 saw Leedswin 20-3 in a second round-tie.

Leigh gained revenge one year later, winning 9-5 atKirkhall Lane before a crowd of 26,262, Harry Greenscoring the decisive try and Jimmy Ledgard kickingthree goals. They then lost 12-3 in a second round-tie at Headingley two years later.

In 1962 Leigh edged through the second round-tieafter a replay. IN TOWN TODAYDONCASTERDoncaster have made a strong start to the 2014Kingstone Press Championship season and currentlysit just two places behind Leigh in third.

The Knights started the season with a long trip toWorkington, but came away with an impressive 22-12 winthanks to a Stewart Sanderson double.

Paul Cooke's men are looking to build on their strong sixthplaced finish last season, with the draw of Super Leaguerugby now such an exciting prospect for clubs in thesecond tier.

Another Sanderson pair was enough to take the spoils intheir first home game of the season, at the KeepmoatStadium, as they ran in six tries in a solid 30-12 victory.

Cooke's side were unable to keep up their perfect start,though. A tough encounter against the Dewsbury Ramssaw the Knights lose by just eight points.

They kept the game tight in the first half, but were unableto stop a powerful Rams outfit led by coach GlennMorrison.

However, Doncaster responded with two wins over acouple of their Yorkshire rivals.

A tough trip to Batley was negotiated well, with ScottSpaven and Nev Morrison crossing in a 20-12 win.

The highlight of their season came the week after, whenthey saw off one of the early pace setters Featherstone atthe Keepmoat.

Player-coach Cooke was on the score sheet in a resultwhich will surely have made people sit up and take noticeof his side, in what is one of the most competitive seasonsin recent years.

The highlight was followed by a lowlight, though. Halifaxgot close to racking up a half century in a 48-6 thrashingof the Knights.

Joe Arundel was the only player to cross the whitewash,though there is no disgrace in losing at the Shay, withLeigh only just scraping through a dramatic game there afew weeks ago.

Doncaster have shown the mental toughness to recoverfrom big defeats this season. The disappointment of theloss over Halifax was followed up by a hard fought victoryagainst Championship new boys North Wales Crusaders.

Ben Crooks crossed twice as the Knights negotiated atough game, against a side which- despite their averagestart to the season- have been notoriously hard to beat.

This was followed up by yet another big upset. Trailing 28-12 at half time away at the Sheffield Eagles, Cooke and coconjured up a thrilling second half response.

The Knights notched up seven tries to keep themselves inthe upper echelons of the Championship table.

With the weight of expectation hanging on theirshoulders, the visit of bottom of the league Barrowpresented a potential banana skin.

Sanderson again was at the centre of a 30-28 win, whichwill surely have pleased Doncaster fans because of theirside's fighting spirit.

Most recently, though, they suffered a surprising defeatagainst Whitehaven. Despite two Tom Hodson tries, ‘Havenmanaged to pull off a 29-20 win.

Sanderson will clearly be the dangerman for his side today,with his kicking accuracy and ability to pull the stringsimportant for the visitors.

In the game at Workington, Leigh Reserves just kept theirnoses in front throughout a competitive game, winning38-34 with Sam Baggaley scoring two tries and Josh Wardkicking five goals. 2010 - Featherstone Rovers were the visitors to LeighSports Village for a top-of-the-table clash and returned homewith a 24-16 victory before a crowd of 2,425. TommyGoulden, Chris Hill and Mick Nanyn scored Leigh’s tries,Nanyn kicking two goals. It was Leigh’s first league defeat ofthe campaign.

2008 - Featherstone Rovers paid their last visit to HiltonPark. A crowd of 1,920 saw Andy Hobson and DaveMcConnell each score two tries in Leigh’s 28-20 victory, IanWatson landing six goals.

2003 - Another home game on this date againstFeatherstone Rovers- this one was a National League Cupquarter-final tie at Hilton Park. Leigh enjoyed a fine victory by26-6 with Dale Cardoza and Damian Munro each scoring twotries. This was Leigh’s sixth successive win but the crowd wasonly 1,668. The Leigh team was: Alstead; Munro (2t), Cardoza(2t), Kendrick, Hadcroft; Weisner (3g), Duffy (t); Nickle,Hamilton, Norman, Richardson, Bristow, Swann. Subs Ball,Henare, Rivett, Bradbury.

1963 - The season had been extended to mid-May after

the harsh winter and in their last game of the season Leighjourneyed to Yorkshire to face a financially stricken BradfordNorthern side. Just 435 fans gathered on the rain soaked andwindswept Odsal slopes and they saw Leigh end theircampaign with a 31-16 victory which featured a fineperformance from Colin Tyrer. The Leigh fullback, who hadmade his debut on the first day of the season, scored twotries and kicked five goals as Leigh’s greater experienceproved crucial in the terrible conditions. Leigh’s other try-scorers were Ken Large (2), Gordon Lewis, Stan Owen andMick Martyn. The Leigh side was: Tyrer; Hodgkiss, Large,Lewis, Tickle; Dyson, Entwistle; Robinson, Higgs, Owen,Walmsley, Martyn, Hurt. Mick Martyn finished as top try-scorer for the season with 19 as Leigh were seventh in thesecond division.

1950 - At the end of their season Leigh took part in ashort tour of France and played Catalan in Perpignan. Theywent down to a narrow defeat by 13-10. Ted Kerwick andPaddy Lannon scored Leigh’s tries with fullback Alan Ackerskicking two goals. Three days later Leigh played atCarcassonne and again came out on the wrong end of a tightgame, losing 15-12.

Leigh Centurions and their coachPaul Rowley stand on the brink

of history this weekend.Victory at home to Doncaster on Sunday willequal the club’s all-time record run of 14consecutive victories, which was set in the1981/82 season and matched in the 1985/86campaign.Rowley’s team have already set a new record for thebest start to a season, with their 28-12 win atDewsbury Rams on Sunday their 13th straight win in allcompetitions.It’s a run that puts them seven points clear at the top ofthe Kingstone Press Championship after just 10 leaguematches, in a season that was expected to be one ofthe closest ever.With so much at stake financially for finishing in thetop two of the competition this year, that’s a significantcushion at this stage of the campaign.But don’t expect Rowley’s squad to becomecomplacent.The former England hooker has stressed throughoutthis season – and in fact during his whole time incharge of the club – that they never look beyond theupcoming weekend.It’s an old cliché, but one that when Rowley stresses ityou can well believe.So while a Tetley’s Challenge Cup quarter-final at LeedsRhinos is not far round the corner, you’re unlikely to seeRowley talking about anything except this week’s

match against Paul Cooke’s Doncaster.The cup match will, however, throw up a dilemma forRowley further down the line.After taking on the Rhinos on Friday June 6, they mustentertain Halifax the following Wednesday – a matchrearranged from that Sunday – before travelling tocurrent champions Sheffield on the Sunday.It will leave the coach with the unfortunate decision ofwhether to focus on the cup or league that week – adecision that shouldn’t have to be made, and onewhich befalls Keighley as well.But for now, it will be all about the league campaignand the Centurions’ attempt to set a new club record.One of the club’s main strong points this year has beentheir remarkable strength in depth.Last week Martin Aspinwall, Stuart Littler, Steve Madenand Jonny Pownall all played in their reserve side.In addition to that, Alex Brown, Andy Thornley, MickGovin and Joe Bullock are among players that the clubhas out on loan at other Championship sides.Admittedly they have been more fortunate than someof their rival Championship sides in terms of injuries,but still, there is almost an argument that they couldfield a competitive second strong side at the same levelthis year.They are certainly the team to beat at the moment, thestandard bearers for the competition. But anyone whohas followed Championship Rugby League in recentyears should know that nothing can be taken forgranted.

Ryan writes:First of all I would like to thank my Nanafor who I am today, not only as a rugbyplayer but as a person. She taught methe morals of life and the rights andwrongs. My proudest moment came after theNorthern Rail Cup Final when I was ableto give her my cup winner’s medal whichwill remain with her. My Nana came and watched every gameI played for Leigh Centurions up until therecent Halifax game. She was just too

poorly to make it, although she tried todischarge herself from hospital to seethe game but the nurses refused to lether go. She is my number one fan as well as aLeigh Centurions fan and loved everyminute of watching me and the boysplay.I would like to thank the LeighCenturions club in particular PaulRowley, Derek Beaumont and my teammates for their support at this difficulttime. I would also like to thank my family
