Welcome to Term 2We hope you had a good break on the holidays and for those who worked through, we trust

that over the five day Easter and ANZAC weekend, you were able to take time out to be with family and friends.

We have a busy nine week term coming up with lots of important events. We start with our ANZAC service this week, then Mothers’ Day afternoons in Noah’s Ark and primary next week followed by national testing the week after.

The Gala Dinner is coming up quickly - May 14 - we’d love you to be there in support of a very worthwhile cause. There are still places available. If you are putting together a table, please let us know so we can reserve one for you. (Tickets are $65 each or $550 for a table of 10.) It promises to be a great night of entertainment - supporting a great cause. See our website for more details.

On May 16, we have our Open Night so if you know someone who may be interested in an education at King’s for their children, please invite them along. Flyers are available at main reception.

The high school musical is on during week 5. Tickets and more information will be available shortly.

As more information about these events becomes available or is updated, we will update the website, on-line calendar and iPhone app so that you know the details as soon as possible.

Focussing on characterFocussing on character is one of the ways to touch

a child’s heart and bring about lasting change. Have you ever thought that your child’s terrible stubborn-ness in a conflict situation may have to do with your child’s positive character trait of being determined and focussed? All children have good character quali-ties that, when taken to the extreme, have a negative side. One child may be quite organised, but if not careful, may become inflexible in a less structured situation. It’s like the saying, “your strength can be your greatest weakness.”

Your child may, for example, show a genuine sensi-tivity to others’ needs. Your child may be very com-passionate and care for others and often feel things deeply. This is a great character quality we as parents want to foster in our children. On the other hand, sometimes this sensitivity can cause your child to be-come moody or overly emotional, pouting or crying over the least little problem. So the positive quality is sensitivity but it can have a negative side of being moody or being prone to emotional outbursts.

Your child may have the ability to work hard at a task without being distracted, focussing intensely, with real determination to succeed. This quality of being persistent and determined can be a real asset, but in a conflict situation, it would show itself as stub-bornness and sometimes being disrespectful, insisting on their way of doing things, not yours.

Strategy for the week: As you look at your chil-dren’s weaknesses, look for a positive character qual-ity they may be misusing. Look for ways to balance it with other character qualities they have. Give praise for the positive quality and encourage practical ways to bring balance. Envision a positive future for your child based on those qualities. Encourage small steps of adjustment to bring them in line. Remember ”Keep a firm grasp on both, your character and your teaching.”

Get up and Grow at Noah’s Ark

Through many opportunities for physical activity during the day, Noah’s Ark is supporting the ‘Get Up & Grow’ National Physical Activity Guidelines.

Both indoor and outdoor active engagement in play for both boys and girls is encouraged. Exercis-ing the body and the brain makes for a healthier child and maximises learning opportunities.

At school we commemorated ANZAC Day on Thursday 28th April as the actual day fell dur-ing our term holidays. I attended the ANZAC Service at Runaway Bay as I did last year and was pleased to see an increase in the number of school students and adults in attendance.

I love to see young people marching in the various parades around the country.

I thought I would share this poem with you.

ANZAC DAYI saw a kid marchin’With medals on his chestHe marched alongside diggersMarchin’ six abreastHe knew it was ANZAC DayHe marched along with prideHe did his best to keep in stepWith the diggers by his side.

And when the march was overThe kid was rather tiredA digger said “Whose medals son?”To which he replied“They belong to my DaddyBut he did not come backHe died in New Guinea On a lonely jungle track.”

The kid looked rather sad, then a Tear came to his eyeThe digger said “Don’t cry my sonAnd I will tell you whyYour daddy marched with us todayAll the bloomin’ wayWe diggers know that he was thereIt’s like that on ANZAC Day.”

The kid looked rather puzzledAnd didn’t understandBut the digger went on talking And started to wave his hand“For this great country we live inThere’s a price we have to pay

And for this thing called freedomThe diggers had to pay.

For we all love fun and merrimentIn this country where we liveThe price was some soldiersTheir precious life must giveFor you go to school my ladAnd worship God at willSomeone had to pay the priceSo the diggers paid the bill.

A major problem in charismatic circles is the overuse of the term, “God told me...” Be scriptural! If what you think that God told you is not in line with the Word of God then it cannot be from God. God and His Word are one (John 1:1-4). How often I have heard, “God told me not to work.” You lazy thing - you are worse than an infidel if you do not provide for your own family! The Word says that if you shall not work then you shall not eat. Never use God as an excuse for your lazy flesh.

Conversely, I have known of people who have said, “God told me...” and in my own mind I have thought that that simply wasn’t possible, but God’s ways are higher than ours! A good example is Jerry Savelle: After three months of lis-tening to tapes both night and day in a closed room, he went to Kenneth Copeland Ministries, insisting, “God has called me to this ministry and I am going to live by faith. You don’t have to pay me a salary because God will provide.” Ken-neth Copeland relates how he looked at this small man and thought to himself, “If he lasts two days...” But as we all know today, God had said, “I have called you.”

NAPLAN Test Dates(National Assessment Program; Literacy and Numeracy)

Attention: Year 3, 5, 7 & 9 ParentsWe encourage you not to make plans for the following

days May 9-12 as all students across the country in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 will be expected to complete national testing (NAPLAN) on Tuesday 10, Wednesday 11 and Thursday 12 May. Being on time to school is essential during this time.

Please ensure that there are minimal interruptions to your child’s life during this time and that each night your child is getting a good night’s sleep and regular meals.

NAPLAN is made up of tests in the four domains of read-ing, writing, language conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy.

NAPLAN assesses skills in literacy and numeracy that are developed over time, through the school curriculum. NA-PLAN is not a pass or fail type test, but rather shows how individual students are progressing in numeracy and literacy skills against national standards for all Australian children.

All students are encouraged to participate in the tests. Students with a disability may qualify for special provisions that reflect the support normally provided to them in the classroom.

An individual student NAPLAN report will be issued later this year. Parents can use this information to monitor how their child is progressing and to identify any areas of con-cern. Parents may also wish to use their child’s results to discuss progress with teachers. More information is avail-able at www.naplan.edu.au.

Dear Parents,

I have recently been contacted by a group who are concerned about a proposed Quarry on Old Coach Road. As a school we do not get involved in political or social organisations, however I am happy to publish their concerns so people who wish to be involved can be. Their aim is to collect 4000 signatures by petition by 4th May. Below is information they have sent me.

Based on the information I have perused, the proposed Quarry operation is likely to have a significant impact on our school but also the wider Gold Coast community. It is for this reason that I am seeking your support to get behind this petition. The Quarry sits on a 220 hectare site surrounded by Old Coach Road, Tallebudgera Creek Road and Monday Drive. The proposed Gold Coast quarry is expected to have the following impact on our area:- Introduce at least 1 x 20 tonne truck every 50-60 seconds onto Old Coach Road from 6am to 6pm, 6 days per week, for the next 40 years . The traffic congestion and potential health and safety issue this is likely to cause will be felt far and wide . It will introduce dust and noise (traffic and explosions) into the area, that is almost certain to reach our school . There are rare and endangered plant and animal species in the area that will be significantly impacted. For more information about this project, please go to www.stopthegoldcoastquarry.org
