When God delivered his people from their oppressors in the Exodus, he was not only giving them freedom, but he was also rescuing them so that they may rescue others. The marginalised, the poor, the widows, the orphans, the blind and the lame.

N T Wright speaks about how we easily fall into the trap of thinking that as Christians we have been saved by Christ from this evil world or those in the world that are opposite to us.

“He did not want to rescue humans from creation any more than he wanted to rescue Israel from the Gentiles. He wanted to rescue Israel in order that Israel might be a light to the Gentiles, and he wanted thereby to rescue humans in order that humans might be his rescuing stewards over all creation.”

In our modern context, we are not saved from broken people or those who are antagonistic towards us. We aren’t saved FROM interactions with those opposite to us but TO them. We are called out to be rescuers to them.

I came across this beautiful commissioning prayer that I hope is meaningful to you at this time:

Lord, we know that you call each of us out.Out from ourselves into a world that is longing for your grace, love and truth.

In our community, are people who need to experience your grace.

In our nation, are people who need to experience your love.

In our world, are people who need to experience your truth.

We are your people Lord and you have called each of us out,

To be the visible You in this worldAs you work in the hearts and lives of all

people and nations.Bless us Lord as we go,

As we go into our community, our nation and world.

Let us not ignore your call, but rather plant it deep into our being.

Amen
