Hooked on the Henry’sby Aaron Bingham

Like many of you, I have put in year after year in the hunt draws only to have one rejection letter after another. This is part of the game if you want to have a chance at one of the few great tags. After 14

years of this grind, I was at my son’s baseball practice. All of the fathers were talking about the draw and how we all fared, with the conclusion being we all just had one more point gained, but no tags drawn. That’s the norm here in Utah. But it was the suggestion from my son’s coach that changed everything. His com-ment that the best hunt on the mountain is the archery hunt was the way to go, and not holding out for a rifle tag. Furthermore, He offered to prove it to me himself. Before I knew it a trip was planned for the

When we met up for the trip I was so exited that I left home the most important piece of gear I have, my spotting scope. I felt like an idiot. But that’s what big deer do to me, I lose my senses. Russ, the man that had inspired the trip, only poked fun at me every time we stopped to look at one of the many great bucks that we saw in those awesome three days. I was hooked on the Henry’s! Now I only had to wait one more year, one more application.

After months of waiting the email read, drawn for Henry Mountain archery... The planning immediately began. Russ was more help than anybody could have asked for. The first scouting trip was around the corner I was like a kid on Christmas morning. That trip was amazing. I had never seen so many huge deer. It seemed like there was a 30-inch buck around every corner. It was an amazing experience. I made five scout-ing trips before the hunt, but the best trip was that 24th of July scouting trip. That’s when we found my top two bucks, a heavy 6x7 and a wide 4x5, both of which we knew would be over the magical 200 mark. All of us dream of a buck of that magnitude, now I had my chance, but only if I could hold it together at the moment of truth. I had shot every day for months at this point and I felt good that I could make a great shot when it came time.

I left two days before the hunt with my son by my side. There was no way he was going to miss the hunt. He had been by my side the whole time, every trip I had my son with me and it was the best experience one could have. Father and son, simply awesome. Thanks Dylan. Opening day the sound of the alarm went off,

but it did not wake me. The excitement of the hunt had me up for some time.

Opening morning we checked the first spot with nothing to show. We moved to the spot that will be the most important piece of real estate on the mountain for my hunt, out in the sun and heat. As we were almost to where we were going I looked up only to see a giant

buck on the hill. Stupidly I locked up the brakes putting him on full alert. I threw my binoculars up, it was the 4x5 point. He was a half mile from where we had seen him last, we were shocked. I was busted and all I could do was watch as he walked in to the trees and disappeared. Not knowing what to make of what just happened, Russ said, “Let’s get to the lone knob and glass him up.” Before I could get my gear together Russ and Kirk had their optics up. Within a minute or two Kirk had a big buck glassed up, he was the heavy 6x7! I was amazed that the two best bucks we had found were now 300 yards apart. We watched the buck we now called “Heavy” through the glasses and put him to bed. He was breathtaking. He had grown quite a bit since we had seen him last and this was the first time Kirk had seen him. He looked at me and said that buck is over 215 maybe bigger, which was good news to me. The buck found his spot and was down for the day. The thermals were bad making it difficult to glass as it was still early in the day, so I had to wait for the sun to get a little higher in the sky. That turned out to be a good thing as it gave us time to plan my stalk.


Russ’ knowledge of the mountain helped a lot as he put a perfect stalk together. I was quickly on my way as it would take me 30 minutes to get above the buck so I could come down from above him. I took my time through the trees, the brush was taller than I thought. Once I was finally where I needed to be within 40 or 50 yards, I had no shooting lanes. I ended up moving 10 yards to my left to get a better advantage. That was my first mistake of the hunt. The buck was just in front of the cedar trees. They were so thick I never

saw him, but heard a little something quickly move around the trees. Looking in every direction, all of a sudden the giant buck was right in front of me walking away. All I could see of him was his antlers. I quickly looked out to try and find an opening he was going to pass through. I ranged him at 81 yards when he looked back to see what he had heard, then off he went. He was gone. As I hiked back up the mountain I could only think about what I had done wrong or right. For that mater I had gotten too close.

Day two was uneventful. Day three found us glassing at first light as I worked down the ridge checking all the little pockets. I found Heavy! I was so excited. I called Russ and he and Kirk were quickly on their way. I was lucky enough to watch him for over an hour while the he stayed out on an open hillside before he bed-ded down. Stalk #2 I had to go down through a rock slide to get around to him. It was the hardest stalk of my life. I got to 72 yards, the bucks were up and feeding, but the only problem was I could not see the big boy. He had fed to the west and over the ridge. I set up to ambush him hoping he would come back out to feed, but the only deer I saw that night were two 2-points that had been with him that morning. Back to camp.

Days four and five were very slow. I think the hunting pressure had things messed up. We decided to head home for a few days to recharge and get some work done. We went back down on Saturday night. My long time friend Bryan Reed was back from a work trip and ready to help. We only had a few days but my hopes were high. We met Russ that night and made a plan for the next morning. We split up that morning, Russ and Bryan went to check out one spot while I was going to another. I had only glassed a few seconds when I saw Heavy just briefly as he slipped over the ridge. I raced to the other side of the ridge to try to stay on him, but he had moved off to the west to the same pocket that I had made my first stalk. I was on my way back to meet the boys when I saw them out and filming, so I gave it a little more gas. As I pulled up Russ said, “The 4x5 is down there!” In my mind I thought how did I miss him? He started to move to where I could ambush him. Twenty minutes later I was where I needed to be and I knew he was on his way. I was very nervous as I waited and waited. I soon realized something was up. What I thought was a slam dunk didn’t happen so easy. He ended up going below me and in to the same stretch of cedars that Heavy went in to earlier that morning. At least now we knew where both of my top bucks were, and more then likely they probably were together.

We headed back down to the lone knob. Once there we started glassing. I have to hand it to Russ. He is more patient behind the glass then anybody I have ever met. After five long hours the first deer was seen. It was the buck that was with Heavy earlier that morning. An hour and a half later there he was to stretch and feed on some acorns for only a moment. The stalk was on! We had picked a lone yellow quaky tree as the point where I needed to get to. After a long stalk I was where I needed to be just in time as he was up and feeding. All I could see was his massive antlers behind a small cedar tree. I ranged the tree and it was only 38 yards. I knew my shot would be 40. As he fed along the trail my shot opportunity came. My rock solid Hoyt bow preformed perfectly and the Ulmer edge hit its mark. He only made it 46 yards.

Heavy was down! It was an amazing feeling I won’t soon forget. Thanks to all that helped me: Dylan Bing-ham, Mark Becker, Chase Ashcroth, Kirk Sarter, Zak Kurtzhals and Steve Miya.
