Envy Leads to HatredSteven D. Minor, Evangelist
Kingfisher church of Christ Jacob loved his son, Joseph, more than all the rest of his sons because Joseph was born to Jacob in his old age (Genesis 37:3). Jacob should have known that this kind of parental partiality would bring about envy among the brothers. Furthermore, Jacob made him a nice, colorful coat to wear – a special gi that was given only to Joseph. Wouldn’t you be envious of your youngest brother if this happened in your family?
Jacob’s act of partiality started a long line of envy, hatred and cruelty. Genesis 37 records three times that the brothers hated Joseph (vs. 4, 5, 8). Likewise, the hearts of the brothers are revealed in Genesis 37:11, “And his brothers were jealous of him.” Envy has a way of turning a once decent person into a vengeful being. So much hatred had grown within the hearts of the brothers that they plotted to kill Joseph. Although, their plans changed, and they ended up selling Joseph to a band of traders who were headed for Egypt, the brothers had to live for years with envy and hatred in their hearts. What a way to squander life!
Another example of envy is demonstrated in the fable of an eagle that could out y another, and the other didn’t like it. e envious bird saw a sportsman one day, and said to him: “I wish you would bring down that eagle.” e sports-man replied that he would if he only had some feathers to put into the arrow. So the eagle pulled one out of his wing. e arrow was shot, but didn’t quite reach the rival eagle; it was ying too high. e eagle pulled out more feathers and kept pulling them out until he lost so many that he couldn’t y; then the sports-man turned around and killed him (Moody’s Anecdotes, pp. 44-45). e moral is that if you are jealous, the only person you can hurt is yourself. Do you have envy and hatred in your heart? Don’t you think it’s time to let it go?

Nothing appeared to be missing, but the back door was open and it looked as if something had been used to force the door open, according to the report.
March 5, 2 p.m. – Offi cer Justin Trumbley and backup were called to a possible domestic disturbance at 615 N. 6th St. Nate Eckart, 28, Kingfi sher, was charged with domestic abuse by strangulation and feloni-

March 6, 2 p.m. – Eva Redhat reported to Trumbley that she had been scammed and had given the alleged scammer remote access to her computer and personal information.
March 11, 5:05 p.m. – Offi cer Aaron Schlegel was contacted by dispatch from Keath Garramone reporting that Justin Wade Deshazo, 26, Kingfisher was at his residence and has warrants for his arrest. Dispatch con-fi rmed Deshazo had active warrants out of Kingfi sher County. When Trumbley and Schlegel arrived at the residence, 517 S. 8th St., Deshazo was on the porch smoking a substance that smelled like marijuana, the report said. Deshazo was
placed under arrest and searched and a cigarette wrapper containing a green leafy substance was located in his pocket, and a black vial containing a white crys-tal-like substance was locat-ed near where Deshazo was standing. Deshazo was taken to Kingfisher County Jail and charged with possession of marijuana and posses-sion of methamphetamine. Officers were called back to the residence to collect more drug paraphernalia that Garramone found after offi cers left, a pipe contain-ing a green and burnt leafy substance in the end. The green leafy substance tested positive for THC and the white crystal-like substance tested positive for metham-phetamine and was sent to OSBI for further testing.

“We thought we would have a really hard time guarding them,” Reese ad-mitted.
But, boy, did Kingfisher ever guard the Tigers, who averaged 74 points enter-ing the game. The Tigers’ previous season low was 47 points, the only other time they’d been held below 55 points.
But against Kingfisher, Fort Gibson didn’t hit dou-ble figures until less than a minute remained in the first half.
KHS used two 3-point-ers from Jett Sternberger and another from Haynes Lafferty for a 9-0 run and a 10-point lead that was eventually trimmed to 18-10 at halftime.
“Trey Green did a tre-mendous job on their post player,” Reese said of the Ti-gers’ standout Kyle Dortch. “And Trevor and Marco have stopped pretty much everyone they’ve guarded all year, so we were confi-dent in them.”
Fort Gibson shot just 18 percent in the first half, but Reese new the Tigers were destined to make a charge.
“We talked at half how there’s definitely going to be a stretch where they go on a run,” Reese said. “They’re just too good a team.”
It happened.The Tigers made their
first shot of the second half, the first of 10 consecutive points in the third and part of an overall 12-0 run.
The big shot came from Rico Ybarra, whose 3-point-er at 3:40 of the third gave the Tigers a 20-18 lead.
“We knew they’d make big plays,” Green said. “We just had to keep our cool and respond to it.”
That happened, too.Sternberger ended the
run with a 3-pointer at 3:07 of the third.
The play of the game came moments later.
A loose ball on Fort Gib-son’s end of the court was pounced on by Sternberger and Trevor Buckner, who from the floor, flipped it forward to Green.
The sophomore was fouled as he made his layup. The ensuing free throw at 2:53 of the quarter gave the Jackets a 24-20 lead.
“I think that play showed how the game was going to go,” Reese said. “Plays like that are winning plays and that’s what we try to get out of them everyday.”
Green added a 3-pointer to close the third quarter for a 29-24 edge, capping an 11-4 run by the Jackets over the final 3:40 of the frame.
Dortch buried a trey with 4:30 left to pull the Tigers within 32-27, giving them life.
But the hopes would soon be dashed for Fort Gib-son and it’s the trio of senior starters who did it.
B u c k n e r a n s w e r e d Dortch’s shot with a 3-point-er of his own 15 seconds later.
Lafferty followed with another one 25 seconds later and then Charqueño drove
Title[Continued From Page 7A]
in the final nail with a three-point play.
That capped a 9-1 run to give KHS a 41-28 lead with 1:46 left.
Charqueño, who started the fourth with a 3-pointer, finished with six points and four assists.
Lafferty scored six and Buckner had five points and five rebounds. Hauser, who came off the bench in the first half when Lafferty was whistled for two quick fouls, had two points.
The team shot 52 percent, including 43 percent (9 of 21) from 3-point range.
Sternberger made three of them and led the team in points (15), rebounds (six) and steals (three).
Green added two treys (as did Lafferty) and scored 11 points.
Dortch paced the Tigers with 16 points. No other Fort Gibson player scored more than six as the Tigers were limited to 31 percent shooting.
Outside of the five-min-ute stretch in the third quar-ter, Fort Gibson was unable to put together its signature scoring runs.
That became the story for most of Kingfisher’s oppo-nents since the Jackets lost their regional title game to Elgin, putting them within a single loss of being elim-inated.
“Ever since that loss, it lit a fire under us,” Sternberger said. “Us five starters are gym rats and we all work at it. Big-time players make big-time plays and when it came down the stretch and when they made runs, we hit shots and stopped it.”
Many of those big-time shots came from the group that was asked to sacrifice. They were rewarded with the gold ball.
Sternberger, who’s been a starter both of his varsity seasons, was named the tournament’s MVP.
He scored 21 points in Friday’s 39-29 win over Victory Christian.
The Jackets trailed 29-27 in the fourth, but Stern-berger scored five straight points to give KHS a lead it wouldn’t lose. Kingfisher scored the game’s final 12 points.
Victory Christian didn’t score for more than 3:00 to close the game.
Sternberger acknowl-edged what the upperclass-
men meant to the title.“The seniors do so much
of the dirty work that no-body understands,” he said. “They do stuff that nobody sees; that doesn’t show up on the stat sheet.
“But they’re the hardest workers we’ve got and we’re going to miss them next year.”
Reese admitted that a state title seemed far-fetched after losing the re-gional championship game.
But the Jackets respond-ed with six consecutive wins. The last five were against other top-10 teams.
“That senior class,” Reese said. “I can’t say enough about how hard
they worked and the way they accepted their roles. They just wouldn’t quit.”
That attitude worked its way down and culminated in Saturday’s celebration.
“All this buy-in every-day at practice all the way from the starters to the scout team, we all bought it,” Green said. “That’s why we all worked so hard and that’s why we won today.”

Cashion’s bid to get back to the Class 2A title game fell one win short.
The third-ranked Lady Wildcats were upset 58-51 by Christian Heritage Acad-emy last Friday at Yukon High School in the 2A girls’ semifinals.
Unranked CHA had de-feated No. 2 Howe 47-42 in Thursday’s quarterfinals, then beat No. 1 Dale 43-34 on Saturday to win the title.
Cashion struggled to get its offense going against the Lady Crusaders’ zone, espe-cially in the first half when it was limited to just 12 points.
CHA used a 14-7 run in the second quarter to build a 21-12 lead.
Cashion scored 14 points in the third, but only trimmed its margin by two points.
Addi Meeker paced the Lady Wildcats with 14 points before fouling out.
Presley Payahsape add-ed 12 points and Talli Rob-ison 10.
Cashion’s season ends with a 14-4 record.
