Kingdom Authority Under Jesus

August 17, 2014 10th Sunday after Pentecost

8:15 a.m. & 11:00 a.m.

WELCOME in the name of Jesus! We are glad you have joined us today in praise and worship to our Lord Jesus Christ. Together we share the Gospel, God’s Good News of salvation. This is a free gift which we cannot earn and do not deserve. It is only through faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, who suffered, died and rose from the dead, that we are forgiven and receive the promise of eternal life.

VISITORS AND GUESTS We sincerely invite you to be with us regularly and make St. John your church home. Please stop by our Welcome Center, located in the Commons Area, for a gift and information. Worshipers who have difficulty rising and standing during our services may remain seated with our complete understanding. Assisted Hearing Devices: If you do not have your own hearing device, please check with an usher to obtain one. A Nursery is available for children up to four years. A Nursing Mother’s Room, equipped with audio/visual system, is located next to the nursery. Tote Bags for children ages three through kindergarten are located in the Commons. Reserved Pews have been set aside for the residents of Bethesda. Prayer Kiosk in Commons: A member of the Prayer Team will be available to take your request, which will be given to the pastors before the time of prayer.

AN ASL INTERPRETER is available at the Majestic Grace Service.

LOST & FOUND is located in the Worship Center Commons behind the Welcome Center.

THE SACRAMENT OF HOLY COMMUNION is offered at St. John on the first and third Sundays of the month in both services. For more information about the Lord’s Supper refer to the pamphlet in the pew rack. Gluten-free wafers and non-alcoholic wine are available. If you have difficulty coming up to the communion rail one of our pastors will come to you.

AS WE GATHER TODAY “Alongside the theme of relationship expressed in the language of Covenant, there is also responsibility, expressed in the language of Kingship or Kingdom. “The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it” (Genesis 2:15). Their task, and still ours today, was quite simple: to steward, oversee and care for all of creation” (Covenant & Kingdom, p.6). As people made by God and reflecting his image, this was their responsibility. The charge to serve, honor and obey God in His Kingdom has not been removed from us—it is our duty and privilege to be in this role even today.

This Sunday we celebrate the Tenth Sunday after Pentecost. This season begins with Trinity Sunday (celebrating the mysteries of God) and culminates with Christ the King Sunday (where all things in heaven and earth will be together under one head, Jesus Christ). The liturgical color for this season is green, which is the color for growth, leaves, fruit, and life, suggesting a time of spiritual growth.

The altar flowers are placed today to the glory of God by Mark & Jean Froehlich in celebration of the 1st birthday of granddaughter, Paige Whitney, on August 22; and by Joyce Kleb in celebration of her 80th birthday and in thankfulness for her many blessings.

Adult Bible Study Covenant & Kingdom TODAY | 9:45 Chapel Covenant is all about our relationship with God our Father, sealed in the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, certified in his resurrection from the tomb, and to be fully celebrated at the end of all time in the life of the world to come. Our covenant relationship with God establishes our identity which shows itself in our obedience to God’s commands. Kingdom is about the way God reigns in the hearts of believers – as well as over all the world. As citizens of God’s kingdom we have authority to act in Jesus’ name and we represent the King, in the power of the Holy Spirit. What does this mean? Join us for this two-week Bible Study, led by Pastors Bahn and DeMik and learn more about our relationship with God and the ways in which we represent him to a world that desperately needs to understand that reality.
