• Cotton clothing was lighter and softer to wear than wool.

• By the late eighteenth century supplies of cotton were increasing.
• The price was falling because it was produced by slave labour in the West Indies and the USA.
• The availability of this cheap cotton brought great benefits to the British cotton industry.
