Advantages of cotton

• Cotton clothing was lighter and softer to wear than wool.

• It could be washed more easily and so was more hygienic.

Prices of cotton• At first, cotton was expensive.

• By the late eighteenth century supplies of cotton were increasing.

• The price was falling because it was produced by slave labour in the West Indies and the USA.

• The availability of this cheap cotton brought great benefits to the British cotton industry.

• was the major textile industry in Britain by 1812.

• produced great prosperity.

• employed thousands of people.

• was also a very important export.

• was the first to be industrialised.

• Lancashire was the centre of the cotton industry.

• The cotton trade with the USA made Liverpool Britain’s busiest port.
