Letter from the Executive DirectorApril, 2010

Dear Friends, Partners, and Contributors:

The Kids In Need Foundation is pleased to share the 2009 Annual Report with you, an update on your investment and how it

is affecting children today and in the future. Kids In Need Foundation believes providing free school supplies to students who

need them is a substantial contribution to the quality of children’s daily lives and future endeavors.

We consider financial and product donors to the Foundation as investors and hope each of you sees yourself that way, also.

Your investments in 2009 allowed us to serve 1.6 million children, distribute more than $38 million worth of free school supplies,

and award more than $100,000 in grants to teachers.

The immediate benefit of your investment is that children do not have to suffer the humiliation of being without the tools

they need to participate in classroom activities. Having the same tools as other children levels the playing field for students

and offers them the same opportunities to achieve. It also means those kids experience the same rewards – praise from

teachers and parents, better grades, more exciting days in the classroom, and heightened feelings of self worth.

The long term benefits of your investment include better educated adults who feel good about themselves and about trying

to realize their dreams, a competent workforce from which you can draw the employees needed to sustain your company’s

high standards, and self-supporting citizens who contribute to their communities.

We greatly appreciate the trust our donors put in the Kids In Need Foundation to handle their investments wisely. For the

second year in a row we received Charity Navigator’s highest rating for the fiscally responsible way we conduct business.

In 2009, 98 percent of the revenue we received went directly to programs. Very few nonprofit organizations can make

that claim.

Our donors, of course, are what keep us going, and we are very grateful for your support. However, we must keep our eye

on the future and hope that all our current donors continue to elevate students to their greatest potentials by providing

the resources we need to help the kids. As we seek new donors – new investors – to further increase our impact, we ask

for help and guidance from all of our friends and contributors.

Thank you for looking back at 2009 with us and for looking ahead to 2010 and beyond.

Sincerely,

David H. Smith

Executive Director

The SummitSince 1999, the Kids In Need Foundation has organized an educational event for people from all over the U.S. who work in, or wish to start, teacher free store facilities. We call this the Summit.

The Summit provides a platform for exchanging ideas and information about operating a free store for teachers. It is an arena for sharing best practices, solving problems, bragging a bit about successes, and gaining new insight into the challenges of operating this unique type of facility. The first Summit was held in Cincinnati in 1999 and was attended by 12 people representing nine organizations. Each year, the Summit is held in a different city to give attendees the opportunity to visit different Resource Centers in the Kids In Need National Network. In 2009, Teachers’ Treasures in Indianapolis hosted the event. Sixty-three people attended and twenty-eight different organizations were represented.
