People are becoming more interested in:

In most states, you can buy green power through one or more utility programs.

Energy consumption is becoming a barometer of a nation’s economic prosperity.

• abundant energy resources.

• sustainable energy and they are willing to pay more for it.

• lower prices on renewable energy.

• transportation fuel that is cheap and clean.

Mechanical advantage through refined gear assemblies.

Mechanical advantage happens when the speed and torque of the second gear in an assembly is different from that of the first. [Speed divided by its radius]

Common gears: Spur gear, Helical gear, Bevel gear, Crown gear, Worm gear, and Rack and Pinion.

Dynamos that convert mechanical rotations into small amounts of electricity. The relationship between mechanical rotation

and electric current in a dynamo is reversible, creating a motor.

Can be small and portable for personal use.

Piezoelectric crystals which can give small burst of electric current when deformed by physical pressure.

Large quantities of electricity through wind driven turbines. Wind power produces no water or air

pollution.

Common uses, cigarette liter, push button igniters, and sonar.

It is renewable or never ending source of energy. One negative is that some models of turbines can be dangerous to birds.

Being tested for use as solenoid replacements, or electrostatic muscles.

Renewable resources that can be replenished by natural processes at a rate comparable to its rate of consumption.

Example: solar, wind, oxygen, tides, biomass, and Methane.

Gasoline, coal, natural gas, diesel and other commodities derived from fossil fuels are non-renewable.

Product recycling is easier now that most plastics can be identified by the 7 cryptic markers.

The U.S. is #1 in trash producing countries, producing about 1,609 pounds of trash per person per year.

Glass, steel (or "tin") and aluminum are easy to recognize and recycle.

No harmful emission caused by the consumption of energy or product manufacturing.

Manufacturers are facing market forces that encourage them to phase out materials due to their real or perceived environmental impact.

The performance of power electronics has increased considerably, thus reducing energy usage and pollution.

87% of the world’s energy come from fossil and nuclear fuels.

The energy consumption of electronic products and control of pollution is becoming a major concern in the global market.

Economically Profitable products and energy sources.

Record sales for Hybrids in 2007 growing by 35% with Toyota Prius at the top of hybrid sales.

Over time conventional means of energy will increase in cost due to depletion of resources.

Higher gas prices and lower hybrid prices give hybrid market a boost.

Tax Incentives - the Energy Policy Act of 2005 signed by President Bush provides that: manufacturers of energy efficient appliances are eligible for tax breaks, which may lead to increased availability and a reduction in prices.

Individuals and businesses who buy or lease a new hybrid gas-electric car or truck are eligible for, and can receive, an income tax credit of $250-$3,400.

Pop quiz!

Which of these three vehicles is the best in terms of vehicle lifetime energy usage and the cost to society over the full lifetime of a car or truck?

The Scion xB was the best rated car according to CNW's 'Dust to Dust' Automotive Energy Report, August 2007

Type-Hand held LED flashlight -Hand crank winding

Sequence-Finding light -Winding dynamo on flashlight -Grab box -Positioning of light in hands or under arm-Opening boxesmechanism

-Dynamo-Rechargeable battery/capacitor-Grey plastic shell

Function -Provide a reliable light source with out disposable energy storage. -Dynamo recharges battery.

Purpose-Finding and recovery of

food storage

Outcome-Light worked long enough -Not real bright

Difficulties-Moving heavy items-Advantageous positioning of light-Bending over for long periods -Standing in cramped spaces

Dynamo worked well -Generated plenty of power for the job-One minute of charging = 1.5 hours of usable light-Convenient to have-Easy to use

-Reliable

Dynamo didn’t work well-Confusing crank direction-No charge level indication -Not usable for those with

some disabilities

Conclusion

The trends show a gap for products that can

satisfy the growing need for a sustainable

transportation. And for and an energy

sources that is renewable and clean.
