LEARNING TO SHARESharing is a way to spread a little joy and show kindness to those around us. Having the ability to co-operate and share helps children as they participate in playgroups, enter daycare/school, join sports teams and clubs, and interact in their personal relationships with family and friends.
Sharing is an important skill that people need throughout the entire course of their lives.
While sharing might sometimes be a challenging concept for young children due to their age and stage of development, there are many ways parents can encourage this positive behaviour in their child.
Be a Good ExampleAn excellent way to teach sharing is by modelling this behaviour ourselves. Children are observant and keenly watch what their parents/caregivers are doing, as well as the choices they are making. By happily sharing your plate of apples slices, giving away half of your cookie, or making space for another person under a cozy blanket while reading, you are effectively demonstrating that sharing is valued and appreciated in your family.
Talk About SharingWhen talking to your child, use the word “share” to describe when sharing is occurring. Point out examples of sharing and how it makes people feel good. Notice how other children are nicely sharing toys on a play date or taking turns on the swings. Appreciate how grandma is sharing her time by caring for others. Visit your local library for interesting preschool books about sharing and co-operation.

Enjoy Activities TogetherPlaying with Play-Doh, blocks, and puzzles are all fun ways to spend quality time with your child while teaching them about sharing and co-operation. Encourage your family to also share their feelings, stories about their day, and ideas for fun activities to try.
Practise Turn-TakingTaking turns through interactive board games, cards and dice, and memory-match gets children to interact with others in a way that is
fair and kind. Say to your child, “First it’s your turn to pick a book, next it’s my turn to choose.”
Praise Your Child for SharingWhen your child shares their toy cars with a friend, be sure to positively acknowledge this behaviour. By sincerely praising your child, they will be more likely to share again in the future. Be descriptive in your praise. “I liked seeing you share your crayons with your sister. That made her feel happy.”
Give GenerouslyWhen possible, share old clothes, toys, or items you are no longer using with families who are in need or a local charity. Share fresh veggies from your garden. Make a homemade gift or write a friendly note for a neighbour to brighten their day and share some love. Volunteer your time to make the community an even better place.
We look forward to sharing time with your family at Kinder Links programs this fall.
