Procedure(print this page and the next two pages to teach from)

Step 1: (slide 2, 3, 4)

Discuss how there are many everyday objects that we use that are printed.

Movie posters, baseball cards, invitations, t-shirts, banners, cereal boxes

(slide 5)

Explain that we will create a scene of red birds (Cardinals) in a tree by using a simple printmaking process.

We will make a stamp out of cardboard and potatoes.

Demonstrate the steps as you go.

Step 2: the branches

Put some brown paint on the styrofoam tray - just enough to cover the edge

dip the side of the piece of cardboard in the paint to create the branches.

Think about COMPOSITION - where will the birds be sitting - don’t cover the paper with branches

Step 3: the birds

Think about COMPOSITION - 5 birds max. - don’t cover the paper with birds

Cut the medium potato in half and cut this half again. Stamp the bodies of the birds using red tempera.

Cut the half potato in two pieces. Use the quarter to stamp the tails.

Cut the small potato in half and stamp the faces of the birds.

Clean this half potato with a tissue and cut it in two. Stamp the wings.

Paint beaks, eyes and legs..

DO NOT GLOB IT ON.
