CONCEPT STATEMENT

Galway being one of the fastest developing cities in Ireland, third to Dublin and Cork, their teen/student population is of the majority. As a result, the request for a community/activity center was ofimportance. A site was picked on South Park which is just south of the Claddagh River and GalwayCity in Southwest Ireland. The chosen sites size is that of seven soccer (aka: football) fields which

is also to be included within the scope of the community center.

Additionally, Galways weather is similar to Seattles, with exception to twice as much wind speedsand rain throughout the year ultimately causing more power outages. They have a fairly goodpotable water system, with exception to the high weather alert seasons for flooding; which results incontaminating the potable water with the sewer water. Because of the weather and water concerns,the South Park Community Center was designed to have spiral wind turbines, a green roof with ap-patch, a grey water catchment system, skylights that are solar power connected, and large amountsof windows with partial stone wall structures. All of the above design solutions are to help maximizethe electricity and the natural light without its costs or damage, to recycle the grey water to help

preserve the potable water for when it is needed most, and to reduce costs of food purchase with thep-patch which is maintained by the public during open hours.

Not only is the South Park Community Center going to be self sustaining for the most part, its ultimatepurpose it to create a space for the community where people of all ages can go to relax,have a good time by enjoying the vast amounts of sports, games, and activities, and be a place oflearning and volunteer opportunities.

INSPIRATION

The main inspiration for the South ParkCommunity Center came from Irelandsarchitecture and landscapes - both natural andman-made.

Additional inspiration came from the colors,shapes, movement, and styles from Irelandsculture, history, climate, local businesses, food,activities, etc. As well as two local architects:

Sheila ODonnell and John Tuomey.
