What is Poetry?

Poetry is a river, poem after poem moves along in the exciting crests and falls of the the river waves. None is timeless; each arrives in an historical context, almost everything, in the end, passes.

-Mary Oliver (A Poetry Handbook)

What is Poetry? My Definition!

I think poetry is .…A way to express ones feelings or

state a point.I don’t think that poetry will ever grow

old.

Acrostic

The word acrostic is formed from the Greek word acros (outermost) and stichos (line of poetry).  The acrostic is a poem where the first letter of each line forms a word when you read them looking downward.

Panthers growl,Orioles sing, Eagles soar, Monkeys swing. See?

My Acrostic #1

Sunset glowing along the waters edge

Paradise for all the spring lambies

Rivers shinier than ever

Inside or out, the sun is shining through

New life for leaves on trees

Great children playing outside

My Acrostic #2Bed covers pulled uped covers pulled up

Everything is quiet

Don’t disturb me!

Toasty and warm in my bed, jealous?

I’m the only one making any noise *snore*

My cat is sleeping on my bed

Everything has been turned off

Haiku

n COMPOSING A TRADITIONAL JAPANESE HAIKU POEMn The 300-year old Haiku Poem has its own distinct

discipline:- Each complete poem has only three lines, totalling 17 syllables.

- the first line must be five syllables- the second line must be seven syllables- the third line must be five syllables

When these rigid conditions are met, the result can be a very satisfying word picture .

n Birds take wing on high, gliding over angry wavesback to their safe nests.

My Free Verse #1

There once was a fat koala

Who lived in a ice-cream parlor

He would eat and eat

And would never sleep

Even if his mummy said soala (so)

The koala said

“Im am very fat and proud”

And hid in the bush

My Free Verse #2

I went to the beach today

And in the sand I dug

I dug so deep my nails were black

And then I heard a crack

A bucket I saw

A shiny red bucket

It had a crack in it

And that was when I realised

I had created a strange and mysterious universe.

My little universe

Collected Free Verse #1

Feet on the ground by the stepping stones

Terra firma underneath my shaking knees

And trembling heart stretched over chasms

That I never thought I'd see just from the edge

And now I'm hanging over, wondering, in midair.

No song would be enough, no notes sufficient

To sing the joy and apprehension strung through me

Waiting to be a melody, point and counterpoint

From each, seeming to be forever, with drumbeats

Resonating in fingers and throats.

Awareness ripples along every nerve, calm,

Inescapable and welcome, like the knowledge

Waking somewhere in my brain that there is

Something more here than eyes can see, or

Five senses pick up, something rare and invisible.

And for the first time I understand what I want and

What Juliet knew, and I see where I have stood

All this time, not alone but supported, held

By something if not the someone holding me now--

It is love, and I will not fall.

Collected Free Verse #2

My game face is blue.

I must put it back on, see

How much of my glory was real

And how much fever.

I see drawn eyes, too much marring,

A suit of swan feathers

Without the matching shape.

And however I imagine lights,

No straw spins to gold.

I see as I have been seen,

Not radiant, but ashine in hope

Yet to see a finish.

Rapunzel’s Rap

Rapunzel was a girl with hair of goldTrapped in a tower in days of old

She wasn’t allowed outside to playAnd her golden hair grew longer each dayGrew longer and longer and longer each day.

The witch who locked her up was meanWith a pointed nose and a face of greenMean mean meaner than the queen of mean.

My Rap Poem #1

There once was an old lady who never said please,

She walked down the street one day and got covered in cheese.

So she ran back home and took a shower,

Got her broomstick and said “I’ve got the power”.

She got on her broomstick and zoomed to the supermarket,

But realised there was no-where to park it.

So she decided to go to the park,

But by the time she got there it was dark.

She went home and cooked up a potion,

And it turned into body lotion.

So she went to bed and thought “Today has twisted me around the bend”

And now the poem has finished, The End.
