The title evokes thoughts of the early days, of boisterous diggers in one of the many saloons and pubs that studded the winding roads of the canvas and corrugated iron diamond town, swigging draughts and singing along with, dare one say it, scantily clad womenfolk.

Great fun indeed, these early days of New Rush

on the farm Vooruitzicht, except for the fact that the Colonial Secretary detested both the term New Rush – too vulgar – and Vooruitzicht – he could hardly spell it, let alone pronounce it!

So the problem of renaming the town was passed to Richard Southey, then Lt-Governor of Griqualand West, who in turn, passed it on to John Blades Currey, the government secretary.

A very worthy diplomat, Currey made very sure that the Colonial Secretary would be able to spell and pronounce the new name chosen for the town, by naming it after the secretary himself, Kimberley! The name was obviously approved by His Lordship, so Kimberley was born, but it can be certain that the diggers did not care two hoots at the time.

The new name was proclaimed on 5 July 1873, although the township was founded in 1871. The story of naming Kimberley is fairly well known, but what is not well known is who the Earl of Kimberley was, and what did he do that even today his name is as well remembered as that of his monarch, Queen Victoria?

John Wodehouse was born in Wymondham, Norfolk, on 29 May 1826, the eldest son of Harry and Anne Wodehouse, and a relative of Sir Philip Wodehouse, Governor of the Cape Colony 1861-1870. At the age of 20, while still a student at Oxford University, he inherited his grandfather’s title of Baron Wodehouse, his father having predeceased him. Five years later he was appointed Under Secretary for Foreign Affairs, holding this post from 1852 to 1856, after which he became the British Ambassador to Russia.

In 1858 he resumed his former position until his promotion to Lord Lieutenant of Ireland in 1864, a post he held for two years. Queen Victoria conferred an Earldom upon him in 1869. He and his wife, the former Lady Florence Fitzgibbon, were living at their country estate, called Kimberley House, in the village of Kimberley in Norfolk, hence the choice of title. The name Kimberley is derived from the Anglo Saxon word Cynburgh-leah, which means “women were entitled to own land”.

Two years later Lord Kimberley became a member of Gladstone’s first cabinet and from 1870 he served as Secretary for the Colonies. As his appointment coincided with the discovery of diamonds on the ‘dry diggings’ he was prominent in the dispute over the ownership of Griqualand West, and the negotiations for its annexation as British territory.

Although he resigned his post in 1874, he was re-appointed by Gladstone as Colonial Secretary from 1880-1882, one of his major feats during the period being the peace settlement after the battle of Majuba in 1881.

He lived long enough to hear about the siege and relief of the town named after him and died on 8 April 1902.

A fascinating and very informative historical walk that spans the City Centre and the Kimberley North suburb. Sites such as where the first traffic lights in Kimberley were erected, the Executioner’s yard, the pretty Victorian Kimberley Station, Cecil Rhodes’ De Beers Mining Company Boardroom and another big hole in Kimberley, the De Beers Mine, are visited.

The walk commences at the Savoy Hotel which opened its doors in 1892. Some 41 authentic sites are visited and the walk follows a four kilometre trail. A detailed guide book on the walk written by a well known Kimberley-based tourist guide is on sale at the Savoy Hotel.

In the Footsteps of Cecil Rhodes and the MininG MaGnateS

An historic tour of Kimberley following in the footsteps of Cecil John Rhodes, Barney Barnato, Alfred Beit, Dr Leander Starr Jameson and other diamond mining magnates. The start off point is at the original De Beers Mining Company Boardroom where the imperialist Cecil Rhodes began his quest to control the diamond industry.

After viewing Rhodes’ Big Hole – the De Beers Mine – it’s off past Market Square and his first home, and then on to the famous Kimberley Club and the Africana Research Library to view Rhodes’ corner. Rhodes’ statue will be seen, and stories told of Beit, Jameson and the then Rhodesia. Rhodes’ tree where he sorted diamonds plus Rudd House are next in line before heading off for the Masonic Temple, the Halfway House and the Sanatorium. Stand in Rhodes’ footsteps at the grave of Neville Pickering, and finish the tour at the Head Office of De Beers Consolidated Mines, just down the road from the old Craven Hotel.

maGarenG muniCipal areaThe name Magareng is a Setswana word meaning “The Middle”, and is derived from the fact that this region is literally in the middle of the country. Warrenton is an agricultural town located 70km north of Kimberley on the Vaal River and is the administrative centre of the municipality. Other towns include Ikhutseng, Windsorton Road and Warrenvale. Diamonds were first discovered in Warrenton in 1888, the town was originally known as Stanger`s Rest, then Fourteen Streams, but was finally named Warrenton after Charles Warren in 1880.

Kimberley’s brief history is but a fleeting blip in a local pageant which, as archaeologists have shown, reaches back deep into the past.

An introductory sweep through 3 million years of Northern Cape history - in fact, the story of humanity itself - is the subject matter of a comprehensive display at the McGregor Museum, called Ancestors. From here visitors may venture on to sites such as the Wildebeest Kuil Rock Art Centre, where hundreds of rock engravings, more than a thousand years old, can be viewed.

The centre doubles up as the premier outlet for contemporary !Xun and Khwe San arts and crafts.

Canteen Kopje, and the Barkly West Museum, further out from Kimberley, tell the story of the early alluvial diamond diggings which also revealed one of the world’s most impressive Stone Age handaxe sites, possibly more than a million years old. An awesomely long sequence of human occupation, and record of cultural development, is documented by excavations at Wonderwerk Cave, near Kuruman.

This huge cave extends 140m into the hillside and dates back nearly two million years. This is the oldest evidence on earth for the use of a cave by human ancestors, making this one of the world’s most phenomonal sites.

Discover the history of Kimberley through the eye of a Tswana, Griqua or San person, all three indigenous to the region.

A mixture of first and third world, the tour takes you through historic Kimberley in the footsteps of one of the greatest Africans of last century, Solomon T. Plaatje, and where better to start than at his own house, now the Sol Plaatje Museum. Plaatje, famous for his literary efforts as an author and newspaperman, was also the first Secretary-General of the ANC.

A great orator, Plaatje travelled extensively around the world. After Plaatje House, it’s on to the McGregor Museum for the Ancestor’s Gallery, a drive around historical Greenpoint and Beaconsfield, and then, it’s lunch at Rhodes’ watering hole, the Halfway House Hotel. Time to continue the Plaatje trail by visiting pertinent historical sites of black cultural interest.

First, the William Humphreys Art Gallery, one of South Africa’s top art museums to view modern African art (and some old masters), then the largest collection of ethnographic photographs at the Duggan-Cronin Gallery adjacent to the McGregor Museum, and finally, the Northern Cape Legislative Assembly.

Continuing the trail of Sol Plaatje, we will take you to Galeshewe No 2, one of Kimberley’s historic townships where a tavern, Robert Sobukwe’s house, and other interesting sites will be visited.

A visit to a traditional Tswana hut is a must before visiting Sol Plaatje’s grave to pay your respects.

Battlefields Route

The Anglo Boer South African War began on 11 October 1899, and within four days Kimberley was besieged by Boer soldiers. The unforgiving circle of Boers trapped the citizens of the town, including diamond magnate Cecil John Rhodes, who had taken up residence in the Sanatorium (now the McGregor Museum).

The siege was to last 124 days, over the hottest period of the year, and placed a great burden of boredom, ever-diminishing food and water, and danger from bombardment upon the towns-people. In the last weeks of the siege, food was rationed, and sickness was taking its toll.

It was deemed imperative to break the hold of the Boers on the town. To do this meant that British troops had to be moved smartly up from the south, using the existing railway, to Kimberley. The journey was not without its battles, as the Boer troops moved along the line to meet the British forces. At the Battles of Belmont, Graspan (Enslin) and Modder River, both forces gave a good account of themselves, but the Boers elected to fall back towards Magersfontein Ridge, where they entrenched. The citizens of Kimberley, knowing that the British were coming, waited anxiously for relief. Early on 11 December 1899, they knew that a heavy battle was under way. They did not know that the Boers would defeat the British, causing them to retreat to their Modder River encampment.

Kimberley would have to wait until 15 February 1900 before General French and his cavalry charged through Boer lines to relieve the town. The battlefields are largely unchanged from the days of the war. Field displays explain each battle, and the roads are well

sign-posted. Magersfontein, the site of the heaviest battle, boasts an interesting field museum, and includes something for the bird and animal lover as well. A restaurant provides refreshments. The story of the Relief of Kimberley is told in the Siege Rooms at the McGregor Museum.

1. THE BIG HOLE and the LADY 616One of the largest man-made holes in the world, the Kimberley Mine Big Hole was until recently the richest diamond pipe too. As a site of national treasure, the Big Hole has applied for world heritage status. View the world’s largest uncut diamond at the Mine Museum – the Lady 616.

2. THE BARKLY WEST TREASURES WILDEBEESTKUIL and NOOITGEDACHT, VAAL RIVER, CANTEEN KOPPIE, OLD BRIDGE 1884 and TOLLHOUSE

Barkly West is one of the region’s foremost attractions with literally hundreds of San (Bushman) rock art depictions at Wildebeestkuil and Nooitgedacht. These petroglyphs are from 200 to 2000 years of age. The magnificent Vaal River flows under the first bridge to cross the river, built in 1884, while the Tollhouse is now a museum. Canteen Koppie is a treasure of archaelogical finds as well as being the richest alluvial site from the 1860s.

3. HONOURED DEAD MEMORIAL and LONG CECILThe largest Anglo-Boer War monument in the world, the memorial is designed by Sir Herbert Baker and is a tomb to 27 British soldiers. The world-famous Long Cecil gun stands on the stylobate.

4. THE KIMBERLEY CLUBThe world-famous gentlemen’s Club was founded in 1881 by 74 signatories including Cecil Rhodes. It is a living memorial to not only Rhodes but also the mining

magnates of a bygone era. A national monument.

5. MAGERSFONTEIN KOP and BATTLEFIELDThe Kop that stands overlooking the famous battlefield and its trenches has the stunning Highland Brigade Memorial on the peak. One can see over 50kms from the top of the kop. Drives, walks, a fine museum and a restaurant all supplement this destination.

6. WILLIAM HUMPHREYS ART GALLERYOpened in the 1950s, the Gallery boasts one of the finest collections of modern and old masterpieces from Europe and South Africa. A statue of Queen Victoria poses regally on the outside, while Rhodes’ equestrian statue is close by.

7. McGREGOR MUSEUM (THE SANATORIUM)Built in 1897 as a Sanatorium, this fine piece of Victorian architecture has in its time been a hotel, convent and the McGregor museum. Additions to the building have not detracted from its beauty.

PS: THE FLAMINGOESTry not to forget the Flamingoes on the Joburg Road! One of the largest gatherings of both Greater and Lesser Flamingoes in Africa, these magnificent birds have recently started to breed on man-made islands in the natural pan known as Kamfersdam (Diebel’s Vlei).
