Wildsafe BC wraps first local seasonCouncil deems wildlife

education program a success

C AROLYN GR ANTBulletin Editor

A key component identified by the Kimberley Urban Deer Commit-tee was education, and this past spring, summer and fall, students of all ages received some education on urban wildlife.

The younger grades were spoken

to by an educator contracted directly by the City and older grades had visits from Sonja Seher of WildSafe BC.

This was the first season the WildSafe BC program was delivered in Kimberley. It was funded by

money that City had set aside for a deer cull. When Council voted last year to forego a cull because deer were a provincial responsibility, it was decided resources should go to education.

This past week, the Kimberly Western Financial Group Branch presented a cheque for $370.00 to the Mark Creek Lions Club. The donated funds will go towards the construction of the Marysville Central Park’s new washrooms and concession facility. The funds were raised by the branch in the 10th Annual Support the Cause Day walk which raises money for the Western Communities Foundation – Western Financial Group’s charitable arm. Funds raised for the Western Communities Foundation are all donated to various projects in western Canadian communites that focus on public health, public housing, education and recreation. From Page 1However, during

testimony on Tuesday, the witness testified she brought dinner to Learn at 6 p.m.—a four-hour time differ-ence.

Some inconsisten-cies came up the night of the shooting near the end of Bagnall’s cross-examination, where he made a num-ber of statements to the witness, suggesting that the witness brought dinner to Learn at 10 p.m. and that when she arrived, he was intoxicated.

Bagnall also suggest-ed to the witness that the upper door lock was not properly latched by Ellis after an argument between Ellis and Learn right before the shoot-ing.

In the Dec. 18 state-ment to police, the wit-ness said she went out from her residence be-tween 8 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. to get water, when in fact, she testified was delivering drugs to vari-ous buyers.

“That was a lie,” said Bagnell, referring to the witness’ statement to police. “You didn’t want to tell the RCMP you were delivering drugs.”

Bagnall’s cross-ex-amination included questions regarding Learn’s level of intoxi-cation and whether or not he was drunk the night of the shooting.

The witness testified that she knew Learn had been drinking ear-lier in the evening and knew he was intoxicat-ed, but “wasn’t drunk to the point where he was stumbling.”

Learn showed up to the house right before the shooting and had a one-sentence conver-sation with the witness, which Bagnall suggest-ed wasn’t enough for the witness to gauge

whether or not Learn was drunk.

The witness’ time-line of events repeated-ly clashed with Bag-nall’s interpretation of the chronology leading up to, and on the day of the shooting, which culminated in him sug-gesting that the witness wasn’t putting in any effort into her testimo-ny.

Bagnall also ques-tioned the nature of the relationship between the witness and Ellis. The two knew each other for less than a few weeks, yet the witness conducted drug deals with Ellis, meaning the witness trusted her, suggested Bagnall.

The cross-examina-tion covered a fight be-tween the witness and Learn on the Friday be-fore the shooting that involved a stash of co-caine and money that belonged to the witness in Learn’s trailer, which he wouldn’t allow her to get.

Ellis, who was in a nearby Jeep, left and entered the trailer, tell-ing Learn she’d “call the big boys” to get the drugs, said the witness, which clashed with her original testimony in the first trial, where she said Ellis had stayed in the vehicle.

Following Bagnall’s cross-examination, crown counsel briefly re-examined the wit-ness for details regard-ing who Learn pointed the gun at right before the shooting.

The witness’ testi-mony ended in the early afternoon.

Afterwards, Lynn Neelin, the owner of the residence where the shooting took place, briefly took the stand for questioning by the Crown. She will contin-ue her testimony at the next session.

Trial continues

First warning of the season

Arne PetryshenTownsman Staff

Avalanche Canada issued a special public avalanche warn-ing which includes the Rockies and the Purcells that will be in effect from Friday, Nov. 28 to Monday, Dec. 1.

The warning comes as strong winds and warm tem-peratures bring high avalanche danger to the regions.

“In many parts of the B.C. Interior we’ve had over a meter of snowfall in the past week,” Joe Lammers, public avalanche forecaster at the Avalanche Canada. “This new snow is overlying some of the weak crystals that formed during the recent dry cold spell that every one remembers.”

He suspects much of the backcountry is in the midst of a

natural avalanche cycle, with the potential for large destruc-tive avalanches in many re-gions.

The weekend weather is supposed to break with clear skies and cool weather.

“Natural avalanche activity will likely taper off and the warning signs will be less obvi-ous,” he said. “That said I’m certain human triggered ava-lanches will still be a very real possibility.

“I should point out that the avalanches we could see could be large enough to destroy a truck.”

Areas the avalanche centre is especially concerned about include Caribous, the North Columbia, the South Colum-bia, the Purcells and the Lizard Flathead.

“I would hedge my bets and suspect that the Koote-nay-Boundary region, the

South Rockies and the North Rockies should at least be on our radar,” he said.

Lammers said they don’t have steady data streams com-ing from those areas, which makes it difficult to predict the danger. Another problem he mentioned is the variability from region to region.

“It’s just really important for people to be aware of their lo-calized danger,” he said. “And when in doubt just real it back. The snowpack structure is complicated at this point. My advice to backcountry travel-lers is if you’re heading to the backcountry, I would just stick to low-angle terrain. I’d watch your overhead hazards. I wouldn’t regroup in the run-out zone of the avalanche slide paths.”

Lammers encouraged peo-ple to take it easy this weekend.

“If you have a bad feeling

about the terrain that your group is heading into, I’d speak up,” he said. “It’s a long season with lots of great riding ahead of us. You’ll want to be around to enjoy it.”

It’s also a good time to brush up on using avalanche gear. He noted each backcountry user must be equipped with essen-tial avalanche safety equip-ment — an avalanche trans-ceiver, a probe and a shovel.

It is also important that ev-eryone has avalanche training and has practiced using the equipment.

For the avalanche forecast, check www.avalanche.ca. For further thoughts on the current conditions, please read our Forecaster Blog at www.ava-lanche.ca/blogs.

Potential for huge avalanches this weekend

How Kimberley neighbourhoods stack up when it comes to leaving garbage out.

WildSafe BC season wrap upFrom Page 1The WildSafe BC pro-

gram was delivered in both Kimberley and Cranbrook with educa-tion being a strong focus.

The program pulls to-gether the former Bear Aware information on bears and garbage as well as dealing with en-counters with urban deer.

In her report, Seher noted that while Kim-berley calls to the con-servation Officer Ser-vice Reporting line re-mained consistent with 2013, calls in Cranbrook were up 83 per cent.

In addition to speak-ing to students, Seher spoke to interest groups, brought displays to vari-ous community events and did door-to-door outreach in neighbour-hoods experiencing conflicts with wildlife.

Over the course of the 2014 season, Wild-SafeBC conducted a se-ries of garbage tagging events in Kimberley. During these events, the

Community Coordina-tor identified and tagged household waste left on the curb or back alley overnight.

“Though some n e i g h b o u r h o o d s showed improvements over the course of the season, we still have a long ways to go in Kim-berley to ensure that our household waste does not become a wildlife attractant,” Seher said.

“Garbage is the num-ber one attractant for bears in our community and our province. It’s not just bears that are at-tracted to the strong aroma of household waste. Garbage cans placed out overnight also attract deer, rac-coons, scavenger birds, and domestic animals as well. By waiting until the morning of collection before you place your waste container to the street, you restrict the window of opportunity for wildlife to find and access a food reward in your driveway or alley.

“Don’t let the dipping temperatures and snow affect your diligence with regards to waste management in your home. By ensuring se-cure waste storage and good collection day practices year-round, you won’t be caught off guard in the spring when the bears again become

active.“By managing our

household waste re-sponsibly we can all help to keep wildlife wild, and our community safe.”

Kimberley City Coun-cil agreed that the pro-gram appeared to be a success in its inaugural year.

Campaign has raised over $500,000 to

dateC AROLYN GR ANT

Donna Grainger from the East Kootenay Foundation for Health says the annual holiday fundraiser, the Starlite Campaign, is one of the most beautiful cam-paigns she has ever been involved with.

And that’s because it began with a gift from the heart and has car-ried on in that spirit.

Begun seven years ago when the East Koo-tenay Regional Hospi-tal was undergoing ren-ovations, Grainger says that a new direction was being sought for the Festival of Trees.

“We wanted stars to represent all the people of different faiths and backgrounds who are a part of the East Koote-nay Regional Hospital. We looked at having a star made in Calgary but it was too expen-sive. But along the way, one of the maintenance people from the hospi-tal heard me talking about it and said he could make me one. I didn’t think too much of it, but a couple of weeks later someone said, ‘have you seen what the maintenance team has done?’ I went down to see and there were the stars. They did it on their own time and they do it every year.

“They don’t want their faces out there, this is just their way of giving. They never want to see those stars go out.”

With that kind of start, the Starlite Cam-paign has become a holiday tradition. With each $5,000 interval another star on the roof line of East Kootenay Regional is lit.

“It’s been a glorious way to highlight the generosity of donors and makes a significant impact for funding medical equipment and/or patient com-forts at hospitals and

health care sites in the region,” Grainger said.

Last year the EKRH Starmakers erected a surprise extra-large star on the highest roof point at the East Koote-nay Regional Hospital. On November 28 that Star and stars for Eagles Nest RV Resort (Judy’s Star) and the BMO (Bank of Montreal) will light up to signify the start of the annual cam-paign.

“We made some smaller stars to go across the roof line and in future years, other stars will go across the new ER.”

This year, the Star-lite Campaign is focus-ing fundraising on new equipment for the new six-bed ICU currently under construction at EK Regional. The goal of this year’s Starlite Campaign is $150,000, but the overall goal for the ER fundraising is $1 million in 17 months. The campaigns are sort of separate and sort of combined, Grainger says.

“It’s not too often a foundation has to com-bine fundraising cam-paigns (annual and capital) together but being as unique as we are in the East Koote-nay, Starlite and the ICU working in con-junction makes this holiday giving season even more meaning-ful,” said Grainger.

“The ICU treats the sickest of the sick — trauma, strokes, heart attacks. This ICU is in-credibly important for the whole region. Every year, we’ve been very successful. Our cam-paign to raise a million dollars for the mam-mography was finished in 13 months”

Regional health care auxiliaries, although independent from the hospital, do support the Starlite Campaign. For instance, Grainger says, the Kimberley Health Care Auxiliary is about to give $40,000 this year, with a goal of assisting in the ER equipment fundrais-ing.

Beginning Dec. 1, 2014, health-

care visitors should be vaccinated

VICTORIA - As of Dec. 1, 2014, all visitors to provincial health-care facilities - including long-term care homes - are asked to be vaccinat-ed against influenza, or to wear a mask while visiting, to help protect those most vulnerable from influenza.

This policy first took effect last year, to help protect patients and se-niors who are most at risk of complications from the flu. Anyone who enters a hospital, long-term care facility or any other health-care facility will be expected to wear a mask if they haven’t been vaccinated against influenza. Masks will be available, free of charge, for those who have not been vaccinat-ed.

Visitors join health-

care workers, volunteers and contractors in their efforts to protect patient safety through this com-prehensive influenza prevention strategy. The best way for visitors to help protect their loved ones in hospitals, long-term care facilities and other health-care facili-ties is to get vaccinated.

If you do plan on vis-iting someone in one of these facilities, or if you take family members to outpatient appoint-ments, you are eligible for a free flu shot. Flu shots are available at pharmacies, doctor’s of-fices, and public health clinics. Visitors will be asked to comply with this policy on the hon-our system.

Flu shots are also of-fered for free in B.C. to a number of individuals, including children, se-niors, pregnant women, Aboriginal people, indi-viduals with chronic health conditions, and those who work or come in close contact with higher-risk groups.

raised by the Starlite Campaign goes back out to the region as well, Grainger says.

“EKFH put out $530,000 in funding across the region since the Starlite Campaign began, so money that we got in has already gone back out.”

Donations can be made at your local hos-pital or healthcare facili-ty, through Canada Post – EKFH, 13 24th Ave N, Cranbrook, BC or on-line: www.ekfh.ca. For more information or to schedule a presentation about the Starlite or ICU campaigns contact

Grainger reminds you that a gift to health care helps light the path for others.

“Whether it is your wish to support your local community or bring the best in Inten-sive Care to the regional hospital, a gift to the Starlite Campaign truly benefits the quality of care for you, your friends and family.

“And holiday giving is a great opportunity to remember someone with a gift to health care.”

Cold weather coming this

weekend

Arne PetryshenTownsman Staff

Cranbrook was spared the heaping piles of snow that many areas around the Southwest and South-east Interior received overnight Wednesday, but the cold is coming.

Doug Lundquist, weather preparedness meteorologist at Envi-ronment Canada noted the weather would on be on a downward trend from Thursday high of eight degrees.

“It’s going to be a big shift from the warm temperatures down to much colder weather for the week-end as an arctic front is going to move through Friday eve-ning,” he said, noting that it will likely get to -17 degrees on Sunday morning.

But that will start to again turn around next week.

“Then gradual warming next week, that is warm air mov-ing in from the west again,” he said.

He said that weath-er would affect the whole region.

“The difference is in the Southwest re-gion where it snowed so much the message is really clean up ev-

erything — get rid of all the ruts and prob-lems with your roads before the really big freeze comes, because if that freezes solid it’s going to be a real headache.”

He said it won’t be as much of an issue in Cranbrook and area, as there’s not as much snow.

“But certainly we want to make sure our roads are well pre-pared for colder weather if there’s still snow on them or ice,” he said.

Lundquist noted this season has so far been around average for temperature, but it’s been a record set-ter for wetness.

“I think you’ve been wetter than normal — you had some snow then it melted,” he said. “Normally you have, in the 90 day pe-riod, little more than 75 mm of precipita-tion. You’ve had nearly 125 mm. So way above average in the wetness category.”

He said it was two days of rainfall in that really put it over the top.

“There were two days in a row of record rainfall in September that that amounted to over 40 mm,” he said.

Those days were Sept. 2, which had 11 mm of rainfall, and Sept. 3, which had 32 mm. Those records go back to 1968.

PAGE 6 FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 28, 2014

First there was Black Friday. Businesses tried to entice us into their stores by promising us great deals. These days,

we are told that it’s called “black” because this is the time at which businesses finally turned a profit for the year.

A little research shows that this name is quite a recent phenomenon. It seems to have started in the 1950’s when factory managers called it “Black Friday” because so many employees phoned in sick after the American Thanks-giving blowout on Thursday. The current understanding is quite a successful attempt of rebranding!

But it’s not my intention to moan about the consumerist impulse of this weekend. After all, no one forces any of us to go shopping.

Then came Cyber Monday, created by marketing strategists trying to lure people to shop online on the Monday after Black Friday. This is even more recent—it didn’t start until 2005.

I was amused to see Canadian Tire ads inviting us to come in on Red Thursday. There seems to be no end to marketers finding creative ways to draw us into their stores.

What started me going on this was a television ad I saw about something called “GivingTuesday” (without the space). I had never heard of it before, so I went to the website (givingtuesday.ca) to check it out. It’s on the Tuesday after Black Friday, which falls on December 2 this year.

The home page invites us to “Imagine a day dedicated to giving back … around the world, across Canada and in your own community! Just as Black Friday kicks off the holiday shopping season, GivingTues-day is the opening day of the giving sea-son.”

That caught my interest immediately. I believe very deeply that being generous is

a deep and profound part of what it means to be human. We don’t live out what it means to be a human being unless we give. That’s not just a theological statement, although that’s certainly where it started for me. That

statement is also backed up by increasing numbers of studies which are showing that generous people are happier and lead more fulfilled lives than those who are not generous.

The website goes on to say that “Giv-ingTuesday is a global day of giving. After the sales of Black Friday and Cyber Mon-day, GivingTuesday is a time to celebrate and encourage activities that support charities and non–profits. Whether it’s making a donation, volunteering time, helping a neighbour or spreading the word, GivingTuesday is a movement for everyone who wants to give something back.”

GivingTuesday began only two years ago in the US, and came to Canada last year. Various polling groups wondered whether it made any difference at all. They discovered that Canadian online giving

increased by anywhere from 91% (Canada-Helps) to 421% (Blackbaud, a provider of nonprofit software and services).

The more I surfed the website, the more excited I got. “Giving is a lifelong commit-ment, and a giving day is a special celebra-tion, a reminder to all of us to think of others and our communities as well as ourselves … GivingTuesday is more than a moment, it’s a movement.”

The website provides lots of help to people who are looking to increase their happiness by giving. It suggests ways to get involved; it allows us to search for specific charities; it provides links to different orga-nizations; it helps us find out about the “First Time Donor’s Super Credit,” which was announced in the 2013 federal budget (which gives you an amazing tax credit for being a first time donor).

The best thing of all is that anyone can get involved—individuals, families, com-panies, groups, organizations. The website provides all kinds of resources.

The thing that really caught my atten-tion in that television ad I mentioned was the tagline, “I dare you to give.”

I have given to different charitable orga-nizations my whole life long. It is a source of deep joy for me to be able to do that. So let me end with that same tagline: I dare you to give. I dare you to discover the joy that can be yours as you reach out beyond yourself to bless others in the same way you’ve been blessed.

OpiniOn/EvEnts

It has been over a month since last we left Dr. Hugh Watt — physician and

politician of Fort Steele — cam-paigning to have a new railway built.

It was to be called the Koote-nay Central Railway and, per-haps most importantly to Dr. Watt and numerous others, the tracks would pass through Fort Steele, a town on the decline ever since the CPR bypassed it in favour of Cranbrook.

Let us recap what has hap-pened to this point in our tale. Nothing.

(Which may cause some to wonder at the purpose of the previous article, but that is not important now. That was past history. This is 1901. Always look ahead.)

Let us look back. A petition, signed by Hugh Watt, M.D., N. Wallinger, J. Laidlaw, A.C. Nel-son and 44 others of Fort Steele, arrived at the B.C. Parliament in early 1901. It was for the power to construct, equip, op-erate and maintain a line of railway for the carrying of freight and passengers from Elko (or a point nearby) to Fort Steele, and thence on to the town of Golden. It also includ-ed the power to expropriate lands for the purposes of the Kootenay Central Railway Company, and all other usual rights, which were many and varied. The petition was duly granted in June ,1901 (it would be extended twice more over the years), the vital first step for the fledgling company.

It was a logical plan. The CPR had the Trans-Canada line running to the north and the Crow’s Nest line to the south, but nothing joining them. Coal, goods and passengers along the southern route were re-quired to travel to Calgary and back through B.C., via Golden and Kamloops, in order to reach the west coast. Travelling

‘scratchers’My name is Fuji (in the tattoo world). I am

an apprenticed tattooer that works in a li-censed shop in Calgary. I moved to Cran-brook two years ago and I purchased a home that was zoned commercial with the inten-tion of opening half of it as a licensed tattoo and piercing facility.

After only months of living in Cranbrook I realized your town has a super serious issue with what we like to call “scratchers” who work out of their basements and kitchens with no responsibilities and or restrictions due to their ignorance to the laws and health boards, even if they claim to work in their so called sterile environments (my last count

was 25). My question is this. I myself have moved

on to Calgary due to not having enough cli-entele to survive as have others I know. I still live and own in Cranbrook so I commute to work five days a week but others, like Conner, Pin Up, and the other few legit tattoo shops around town still have to pay their bills, pay the city, honor the codes, jump through hoops and believe it or not feed themselves in the process.

To many, you see tattooing as an easy trade, a quick way out or just simple and fun, not really a job, I know this because many people I know have what they call “real” jobs. For a week I’d like to see you step into our shoes.

My point is this trade is absolutely the most challenging trade I have been involved in. Yes, I carry two red seals amongst my years of experience. My question is, when is Cranbrook going to have enough respect for its struggling legitimate small business own-ers and operators that it will enforce the laws in place that are at their disposal to clean up the illegitimate scratcher tattoo facilities around town and create both more work for the licensed people and make room for those colleagues of mine to hire and grow ?

Step up Cranbrook your state of blissful ignorance is a complete insult .

to the coast from the states of Washington or Idaho, required a three day journey: a train ride to Nelson, a boat at Slocan Lake, a train to Nakusp, a boat to Arrowhead and a train to Revelstoke and beyond.

Furthermore, the construc-tion of the KCR would open up almost 200 miles of mining, lumbering and agricultural land between the U.S. border and Golden.

What was needed was the money for construction. Enter Clement Hungerford Pollen. C. H. Pollen was a pedigreed En-

glishmen of considerable means. A “gentleman engi-neer” by trade, he was 32 years of age at the time, having come to the area in 1897, during con-struction of the Crow’s Nest railway. He farmed at Ta-Ta Creek and later lived and main-tained an office in both Cran-brook and Fort Steele at various times and, to the elation of many, took a decided interest in the KCR, replacing Dr. Watt as president of the company by 1903.

There were other investors, of course, a conglomerate from

England, apparently, but the company still required some serious aid from both the Do-minion (Federal) and Provin-cial Governments in order to undertake construction, and herein began the dance.

Nearly a decade later Mr. Pollen, upon reflection, stated, “It would have been inconsis-tent with western precedent had the Kootenay Central gone through its promotion in a course of easy stages. It has had its share of obstacles.”

Aside from raising funds, the initial task was to undertake the surveying of the proposed route, which began in 1903. The buying and selling of real estate along the proposed line began shortly thereafter and the promises of the date of con-struction — well, they began in 1901, and carried on for many, many years. It was thought to commence early in 1903, in the autumn of 1904, the spring of 1905, and so on and so on and so on.

Many well-known local dig-nitaries lobbied the govern-ment in order to gain support. It seemed things were always looking up but nothing really ever happened. The Cranbrook City Council and Board of Trade did their best in the hopes that the southern depot of the KCR would be located in Cranbrook.

Long & winding roadIce head to Pacific Northwest for first time since 2012-13 season

Taylor rocc aSports Editor

It has been a while since the Kootenay Ice made the more-than 800 kilometre trek to the Pacific Northwest, but that’s where the team heads in hopes of build-ing upon its recent road success.

“It’s a long ways to go, so that makes it diffi-cult,” said Kootenay Ice alternate captain Austin Vetterl Wednesday prior to practice. “You’re not used to playing in those buildings. They’re not familiar and of course, those States teams are always good as well.”

The Ice remain 3-9-0-0 away from Western Financial Place, but head coach Ryan McGill is looking at a smaller, more recent sample size for his team’s road per-formance.

“It has been difficult away [from home]. But since Sam [Reinhart], [Tim Bozon] and every-body has been together in their right spots, we’ve won our last two road games in, for sure, one tough building in Medi-cine Hat,” McGill said referencing his team’s shutout of the Tigers and 4-2 defeat of Lethbridge (Nov. 15). “Going into the States isn’t easy. It’s a little different. We only play them once a year and we’re not used to that. I think what we have to do is we have to not worry about the other team. We have to

worry about ourselves. I think our guys have done a good job of worrying about themselves the last six, seven, eight games.”

The Ice open the trip with a Friday-afternoon matinee against the surging Portland Win-terhawks.

“They’re very skilled,” said Kootenay Ice forward Matt Alfaro Wednesday. “They have [Nic] Petan, [Chase] De Leo and guys like that. We’ve got to shut them down.”

Petan, a 2013 sec-ond-round selection of the Winnipeg Jets (43rd overall), is third in scor-ing for the Winterhawks with four goals and 25 points. De Leo, a 2014 fourth-round pick of the Jets (99th overall) is sec-ond in team scoring with 15 goals and 30 points.

After losing six con-secutive games and dig-ging a deep hole in the

U.S. Division to open the regular season, the Winterhawks are 7-2-0-1 in their last 10 games, pulling back into the U.S. Division race.

Sound familiar?After dropping seven

consecutive games over the last two weeks of Oc-tober, the Ice are 8-2-0-0 in their previous 10 out-ings as they battle back into the Central Division mix. On top of that, the Ice have only lost one game in the month of November, going 8-1-0-0.

Vetterl has experi-enced this kind of turn-around before and knows what the outcome was the last time this team went through it.

During the 2012-13 campaign, the Ice start-ed the season 4-13-0-0, before pushing back to eventually finish 35-35-2-0 and in the WHL playoff picture. Vetterl arrived during the midst

of that difficult start after he was acquired by the Ice from the Vancouver Giants.

“It’s special [to be a part of something like that],” Vetterl said. “And this year is special as well. From where we’ve come from at the start to now, all things are point-ed in the right direction.

“Two years ago when I got here, everything was in disarray. I don’t think we were buying in. We started to buy in and we started to win. It’s the same this year. I don’t think we were buying in at the start of the year. Now we’ve all bought in, so I think that’s the biggest thing to preach to the young guys and everyone new here or old here. If we buy into the system and play our way, we’re

going to win games.”After a Saturday-eve-

ning date with the Seat-tle Thunderbirds (9-11-2-2), the Ice close out the Pacific Northwest swing with a Sunday evening outing in Ever-ett against the U.S. Divi-sion-leading Silvertips (16-4-2-1).

“They’re one of the top teams out there,” Vetterl said of the Silver-tips. “If we go out there and play our system, rely on each other and play as a group, we can beat anyone. We’ve got to prove that to a lot of people out there.”

In addition to buying into the system of head coach Ryan McGill, the Ice have started getting some additional sec-ondary scoring from guys not named Rein-hart, Bozon, Luke Philp

or Jaedon Descheneau.Sunday afternoon in

a 7-3 win over the Moose Jaw Warriors, Al-faro centred the team’s third line, flanked by Jon Martin and Levi Cable. The trio combined for four goals in a third-pe-riod comeback victory.

“We know the top two lines are going to get points here and there,” Alfaro said Wednesday. “To really win games in the third [period] and close games, the third and fourth lines have to con-tribute a lot.

“We’ve had some chemistry. Last year we played a couple times together and it kind of just clicked again. We know where each other is going to be and we work hard.”

Alfaro chipped in

with a goal and two as-sists, while Martin grabbed one goal and three helpers. Cable sent two pucks to the back of the net, earning one assist as well.

Provincial playoff picture set at Mount Baker

Girls 4A volleyball round robin in the books

Taylor rocca PhoTo

Mount Baker Secondary middle Robyn Anderson (#5) hammers the ball across the net as Oak Bay High middle Ellsa Stauft (#10) tries to get up for the block. Stauft and the Breakers came away with a straight-sets victory over the Wild, en route to a third-place finish in Pool D action. The Wild wrapped up round-robin play fourth in Pool D.

Taylor rocc aSports Editor

With round-robin action in the books, the playoff picture is set at the 2014 4A B.C. Girls Provincial Volleyball Championships.

Cranbrook’s Mount Baker Secondary School (MBSS) will face a tough test as they take on the tournament’s top-ranked Argyle Second-ary School Pipers in the first round of playoff ac-tion Friday at 10 a.m. (Court 1, MBSS).

The MBSS Wild bat-tled hard but fell into fourth place in Pool D after losing three match-es to Lord Tweedsmuir

Secondary (20-25, 27-29), Handsworth Sec-ondary (18-25, 25-17, 6-15) and Oak Bay High (27-29, 18-25).

With third place in Pool D on the line Thurs-day afternoon, the Wild and Oak Bay High School Breakers went back-and-forth in a tightly-contest-ed opening set. After fall-ing behind late in the set, the Breakers stormed back to steal a 29-27 nail-biter from the Wild.

Needing a sec-ond-set win to push the match to a third and de-cisive set, the Wild came up empty-handed as Oak Bay maintained its first-set momentum en route to a 25-18 victory.

In Pool A, the top-ranked Argyle Second-ary School Pipers took first place after rolling to three straight-set victo-ries. In their closest match of the day, the Pipers edged the Earl Marriott Mariners, who finished second in Pool A after defeating Terry Fox Secondary School and Mount Boucherie Secondary School.

The Terry Fox Sec-ondary School Ravens, claimed third in Pool A with a straight-sets tri-umph (25-14, 25-17) over the Mount Bouche-rie Secondary School Bears, who rounded out Pool A in fourth.

In Pool B action, the

Riverside Secondary School Rapids finished first after cruising to three straight-sets wins.

After falling to River-side, the Elgin Park Sec-ondary School Orcas rattled off two consecu-tive wins over David Thompson Secondary (25-16, 25-14) and Bel-mont Secondary School (25-13, 25-14) to claim second place in Pool B.

With a win over David Thompson Sec-ondary (25-21, 25-10), the Belmont Bulldogs snuck into third place in Pool B.

Pool C also saw an unblemished first-place finish as the Kelowna Secondary School Owls went undefeated Thurs-day.

The Moscrop Sec-ondary School Panthers bounced back from an opening loss to Kelowna (16-25, 24-26) to defeat North Peace Secondary School (25-16, 25-16) and North Surrey Sec-ondary (25-13, 25-12) en route to finishing second in Pool C.

The North Peace Secondary School Ookapiks edged into third in Pool C after de-feating North Surrey (25-18, 25-20).

Handsworth Sec-ondary School took first place in Pool D with vic-tories over Lord Tweeds-muir (26-14, 25-18) and Oak Bay (25-22, 25-11) in addition to the win over Mount Baker.

First-round playoff

action begins Friday at 10 a.m. at both Mount Baker Secondary School (MBSS) and College of the Rockies (COTR).

Winners of round one advance to the

quarter-finals, which get underway at 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. Friday afternoon. Consolation play begins Friday at 2:20 p.m.

The gold medal match is scheduled for

6:30 p.m. Saturday eve-ning following the bronze medal match (4:30 p.m.). Both match-es will be played at Mount Baker Secondary School.

THE C ANADIAN PRESSVICTORIA - The Supreme

Court of Canada has agreed to hear a pair of British Co-lumbia cases involving seven drivers stopped by police at roadside checks.

One of the cases involves a man who got a warning reading after blowing into a roadside screening device.

Lee Michael Wilson re-ceived a three-day driving ban in September 2012 after the roadside device regis-tered a blood-alcohol level in the warning range.

An officer noted Wilson had an odour of liquor on his breath and Wilson admitted to having four beers hours earlier.

Wilson was subsequently issued a three-day driving prohibition, but he chal-lenged that, arguing there was no evidence, other than the warn reading, that his ability to drive was affected by alcohol.

A B.C. Supreme Court judge agreed and dismissed the roadside prohibition.

But the B.C. Court of Ap-peal later overturned the

lower court’s ruling. The other case involves

six B.C. drivers who either refused to give a breath sam-ple or registered a fail on a roadside screening device.

They were issued 90-day roadside driving prohibi-tions but challenged the law, saying the provincial govern-ment’s amendments to im-paired driving laws went be-yond its jurisdiction and vio-lated their charter rights.

Under the law, drivers found to have a blood alco-hol content of .05 or over are registered in the warn range

by the screening device and given a three-day driving suspension.

Motorists with a level of .08 or over are registered by the device in the fail range and get an automatic 90-day driving prohibition, the same as for drivers who re-fuse to provide breath sam-ples.

Drivers who fail or refuse roadside screening tests can also be fined up to $500, have their licences suspend-ed, their vehicles seized and be required to pay for reme-dial driving programs.

The total cost, including impoundment, towing and storage fees and the use and installation of an ignition in-terlock device, aside from legal costs, is estimated at $4,060.

B.C.’s Attorney General Suzanne Anton said Thurs-day that the province is very confident about its program but that she didn’t wish to comment much more while the case is before the high court “except I will add, of course, that we calculated that it has saved 227 lives over the last three years.

“If the Supreme Court gives us further direction on how to run the program, ob-viously we will be taking that direction,” she said. “We are very satisfied with this pro-gram that makes British Co-lumbia’s highways safer.”

The province was forced to amend its tough impaired driving law two years ago after a B.C. Supreme Court judge struck down portions of the statute as unconstitu-tional. The amendments allow drivers an avenue to appeal roadside prohibi-tions.

Canada’s top court agrees to hear two B.C. cases dealing with impaired driving

ARIES (March 21-April 19) Sometimes there are too many choices on your plate. You easily could feel this way today, and these opportunities keep com-ing in. You finally might have to say “no” to several options. You have a lot to consider because of recent developments. Tonight: Not to be found. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) A last-minute burden could mar your morning. Others count on your ability to handle hassles and keep the peace. Unfortu-nately, a partner could feel put off by one of your choices. Let it pass; he or she will adjust. Tonight: Invite friends over for leftovers. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) Reach out to someone at a dis-tance. The news you hear could be quite interesting, but you still might be surprised by it. You could be fielding calls and adapting your plans for a good part of the day. Use the daytime hours to do some shopping. To-night: Out and about.

CANCER (June 21-July 22) Be sensitive to a friend or part-ner who often offers to help you a lot. You could be dragging from the recent pace and need a timeout. Make it OK to say “no” to invitations from loved ones for now. Keep reaching out to someone at a distance. Tonight: Read between the lines. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) Your enthusiasm is hard to dissipate, yet a family member still might find a way to rain on your parade. As a result, you could withdraw. A close loved one is likely to make a gesture soon enough. Recognize where you might have overreacted. Tonight: With a favorite person. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) You seem to have a lot of ground that you need to cov-er quickly. Some of you will be working, while others will be snacking on leftovers and shopping Black Friday deals. You might be happy not to be around the hectic pace. Tonight: Go along with a friend’s request. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) Keep reaching out to a child or

loved one who delights in your company. Ask more questions about a money matter. If you feel as if you are being given an unfair offer, just say so. A little upheaval might be necessary to clear the air. Tonight: Off to the gym. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) Tension builds, and you see no way around what is happening. Take a deep breath, go out and take a walk. Work on detaching as much as possible before mak-ing any decisions. You could be making a judgment that might not be valid. Tonight: Cut loose with a loved one. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) A conversation could open a door to more opportunities. The person with whom you are speaking seems to have the ability to think outside the box. Use his or her natural abilities to help you structure a new path. Curb any negativity. Tonight: Lounge around at home. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) Be careful with whom you choose to let in close enough to have knowledge of your

many assets. Your friends could seem as though they are snub-bing you, but they actually just might be busy with various Thanksgiving activities. Tonight: Meet a pal at a favorite haunt. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) You’ll be all smiles in the morn-ing, especially as a loved one or potential sweetie can’t seem to get enough of you. Enjoy the moment! A boss or older friend could be very difficult to deal with. Ignore his or her flak, yet remain gracious. Tonight: Make it your treat. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) You might feel somewhat un-responsive in the morning. Take a nap, and you will come back feeling energized and ready to throw yourself into the mo-ment. Someone could disclose some important information. Keep it hush-hush for now. To-night: Be a social butterfly. BORN TODAY Political satirist Jon Stewart (1962), actor Ed Harris (1950), record producer Berry Gordy Jr. (1929)

Dear Annie: I have had a best friend for nearly 20 years. However, in the past six or seven years, “Gloria” has become very self-absorbed and selfish. She refuses to show any reciprocity for favors or kind-nesses. She seems to have time only for doctors, workouts and different physical therapies. She says she wants others to take care of her and threatens to hurt herself if she doesn’t get enough attention. Gloria says she values my friendship, but I guess it’s only when I am doing her a fa-vor. I have decided that I’ve had enough and will break off all communication with her. Do I owe her an explanation, or should I simply be unavailable when she makes her once-a-month phone call? In the past, I’ve told her how she makes me feel, but she shrugs it off and does nothing. I don’t want to be mean, and I worry that telling her off would only make me feel better. What is the right thing to do? -- Soured on Her Friendship Dear Soured: Is Gloria well? If she spends all her time seeing doctors and getting physical therapy, it sounds as though she has medical issues. This, of course, does not excuse her from behaving like a caring human being, but it may explain why she is so self-involved. Since you are ready to terminate the friendship anyway, it would do no harm to ask Gloria about her health, and also let her know that her attitude has eroded the relationship. We hope she is willing to work on this. Dear Annie: I read with interest the letter from “J” about a remedy for seasickness. I had a similar experience that may be of in-terest to your readers. Years ago, I was a young Air Force officer in navigation school. I was on a training flight with instructors, two pilots and 12 students when we encountered severe tur-bulence. Almost immediately, you could see people turning green and starting to get sick. The pilot apologized for the tur-bulence, saying it would last a while, and if anyone was not feeling well, they should take a piece of newspaper and open their flight suit and stick the newspaper next to their stomach. He said it would “stabilize your body temperature.” Almost immediately, everyone grabbed a newspaper, opened their flight suits and pressed the paper next to their stomachs. We endured the turbulence for over 30 minutes, and not one person got sick. Whether it was a psychological ploy by the pilot or a valid solution, it worked. In over 4,000 hours of flying time, I have used this remedy now and then and have nev-er gotten sick. Thought you might want to pass it along. -- Dave S. in Plattsmouth, Neb. Dear Dave: We’ve never heard of this, but if it works, we’re all for it. And it should keep printed newspapers in business. Win-win. Dear Annie: The letter from “Karyn,” the server who insists on calling her customers “honey” or “sweetie,” absolutely infuriated me. She said they love it and life is too short to worry about such things. Well, respect is eternal. Such familiarity has bothered me my whole life. I am not your honey or sweetie. It does not convey proper respect to some-one who is paying good money to eat in your establishment. I also have always dis-liked being referred to as “you guys” when I’m dining with my husband, who will promptly smile at the server and say, “My wife is NOT a guy,” getting his point across without being a jerk about it. If Karyn has regular customers who don’t object to such names, fine. I have no prob-lem with that. But please reconsider how you greet people you don’t know. Some of us take deep offense at this. I would never leave a smaller tip, but I would certainly think twice about returning. -- Melody Annie’s Mailbox is written by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar, longtime editors of the Ann Landers column. “Veni. Vidi. Purchaci.” So

opens a novel about Janet Kirk — a lone women who is braving the wilds of the frontier.

Writing to a friend back home, the “I came; I saw; I bought;” open-ing refers to Kirk’s pur-chase of 80 acres of un-farmed land. The rest of the story explores issues of isolation, land settle-ment, independence, survival, romance, and the myth of the un-tamed west; typical themes for frontier fic-tion.

book written in this style. (This type of writ-ing is no easy feat — Jane Austen was defeat-ed by it).

Published by the firm of George H. Doran in New York, ‘Janet of Kootenay’ received glowing reviews in the ‘New York Times Book Review’, the ‘New York Tribune’, the ‘Atlanta Constitution’, and Phila-delphia’s ‘Evening Pub-lic Ledger.’ Closer to home, the ‘Manitoba Free Press’ and the ‘Le-thbridge Daily Herald’ strongly recommended it.

Evah McKowan was born in 1885, the eldest of four daughters. In 1900 her father moved the entire family from Carlisle, Ontario, to Cranbrook, hoping to take advantage of the

By 1909, C.H. Pollen, still presi-dent, undertook the process of selling the company to the CPR. By early 1910, with the CPR at the helm, con-struction began on the southern end at a point known as Colvalli (near the eastern side of the present day Koo-canusa Bridge), in order to connect with the line descending from Golden to the north. The town of Canal Flats slowly emerged, the town of Fort Steele continued to die.

Finally, on December 28, 1914, after year of waiting, the Kootenay Central sent its first train into Fort Steele, too late, of course, as we know now, although, at the time, there was a great deal of jubilation in the little community. By 1915, the rail line was in regular use between Colvalli and Golden, Hugh Watt had been dead for almost a year and Clement Hunger-ford Pollen was a major in the 54th Battalion, fighting a war in Europe. He

would eventually reach the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and die in 1934, in Surrey, England.

The CPR-KCR remained in con-stant use. In 1962, the CPR undertook reconstruction of the line, bringing in crushed rock from the Sullivan mine at Kimberley, in order to widen the right-of-way, thus permitting the lay-ing of heavier rails in order to handle heavier loads. Although the former Kootenay Central Railway line re-mains in regular use today, the end of an era was marked in May, 1962, when the tired, old KCR passenger coach, in use for 47 years, was quietly retired in Cranbrook. Heated by a pot-bellied stove and lit by a coal oil lantern, the coach and its twin had travelled up and down the line since January, 1915, but no-one wanted to ride the train anymore.

new lumber boom. The teenage McKowan took a job teaching at Kim-berley’s North Star Min-ing School until 1903, when she began to teach regularly in Cran-brook. In July of 1908 she married Harry Mc-Kowan, one of the own-ers of Cranbrook Sash & Door. The happy couple soon had three daugh-ters, which they raised in their home at 317-10th Avenue South (which still exists.)

Unfortunately any details about writing ‘Janet of Kootenay’ are lost to history. A study of McKowan conducted by S. Leigh Mathews for her Early Canadian Women Writers series also came up short of facts. Although Mathews interviewed all nine of McKowan’s grandchildren, none of them knew any details concerning the creation of ‘Janet.’ She was sim-ply “Grandma,” and not a famous writer.

McKowan did write a series of articles about writing, and one gives a clue as to what may have gave her the writ-ing bug. In a 1922 article for the ‘Manitoba Free Press’ she confessed

that “it is almost impos-sible to gaze at the mountains glowing like living coals in the sun-set; to follow a moun-tain trial when the tam-aracks and cotton-woods are touched with the yellow of autumn …without wanting — as my little girl once put it — to tell the world about it.”

The success of ‘Janet of Kootenay’ led to the follow up novel ‘Gray-don of the Windermere,’ which appeared in 1920. Similar to ‘Janet,’ this new book has a for-mer Toronto parson be-ginning a new life in the majestic Windermere Valley.

Advertisements and flyers promised readers a third novel, but one never appeared. Rea-sons for this are also lost to history. McKowan was no slouch though. Not only did she take over Cranbrook Sash and Door after her hus-band died, but she ran the BC Chapter of the Canadian Authors As-sociation, the Cran-brook Women’s Insti-tute, the Cranbrook Girls in Training, the Canadian Society for the Control of Cancer is

Cranbrook, and the Creston Valley Ladies’s Liberal Association. She also played numerous sports and was an avid painter.

She also may have written the great Cana-dian novel. ‘Janet of Kootenay’ is an awe-some start to our very own literary heritage.

(Full disclosure: my great grandfather Charles Selby worked

for McKowan’s hus-band at Cranbrook Sash and Door. Oddly, no one in my family ever mentioned Evah McK-owan or her books. Of course there is also the real possibility that they did and I wasn’t listen-ing. Although she passed away five years before I was born, I like to think her third book was called ‘Mike of Cranbrook.’)
