Life in Te Mining CampTe wonder o it! Te magic o it all.Strange words maybe or a miningcamp sponsored rec hall in a miningcamp; but it was magic damnit. And Igrew up in its shadow - right across 7thAvenue rom the urnace room o thatmagnicent building. It was a complexreally rec hall, clay tennis courts, lawnbowling greens (still operating), tennisclub house and band stand, gasoline

station (Esso), huge parking lot ando course the recently deceased swim-ming pool. And at one time, a largewading pool or younger children andheir parents (and the amily dog too

until the lie guard at the big pool no-iced and put an end to the transgres-

sion). And certainly we cant orget thecommercial trac to and ro aroundhe canteen or convenience store inhe Hall itsel. All o this set in a roll-

ng expanse o manicured lawns, maplerees, larch trees, sidewalks, and bor-

dered by natural stone walls. It wascontained in a huge area between 7thand 4th Avenues, Rossland Boulevardand Giegerich Road. It was like a citywithin a city. And it was a huge part omy lie.n the winter, the tennis courts were

ooded, and hockey games and skatingnever ended morning until night.

I remember one winter when I was playing hockey with about 20 other when an avalanche o snow and ice descended rom the third roo oHall down to the second roo and then out onto the ice. What a hullabaloo when that snow and ice came down o the roo and cered the rink! Its a wonder nobody was killed. It seemed to come dorom a thousand eet up. We were in the middle o a game. Tere wracket. Somebody yelled look out and next thing you know down it caI was only 6 years old and it sure seemed like an avalanche to me!Summer time was just as exciting on those old tennis courts. I remem

waking up one morning and looking out our living room window to seecourts completely ull o people and activity. I asked my Dad whats goon? and he said something about Dominions Day. I was so young Inot understand what he was saying. I remember going over there with soo my riends and what excitement! Tere were ood booths, and gameslike the midway at todays airs. Meanwhile, on the other side o the parklot, the Ktunaxa were camped in the bush. Tey had come in the nightore with their horses and wagons. Te next day they went over to LinPark with their horses and, or ten precious cents; you could ride ontheir horses around the 200 meter cinder track. My buddy, Robert Pratt I, could only come up with a dime between the two o us. No problem. Ktunaxa let us double up on one horse! I remember the Ktunaxa, the adand there were even children there our age as being very kind, nice peand I remember they lifed us up onto the horse and they showed Rohow to hang onto the reins and away we went. How exciting! I had nbeen on a horse beore. We were only about 6 years old, i that. Whilewere riding around the track, we could watch a sofball game in the inand the mining company were running a drilling competition in the coo Lindsay Park. Tey had brought down two huge boulders on a EuLowboy, dumped them o, set up a compressor and teams o drillers copeted all day! Huge noise!!! Tose boulders sat there or years ull o h

and the neighbourhood children climbed on them or hours. At the enthe day, all the children in the neighbourhood (there was lots) were exhaed, ull o hot dogs, cotton candy, pop and Kool-Aid, and very appreciao this guy Dominion who hosted this birthday party!I think back now there were lots o reasons why lie was so exciting inmining camp, namely, at that time in Kimberley, there was no televisTe only television sets we knew o were in the Eatons and Simpson Scatalogues. We made our own entertainment and our parents made thand I also think back and have discussed it later with people o my ents generation and Barb aplin told me that adults at that time had cothrough the Great Depression and then WWII and were exceedingly gr

ul to still be alive, to have work, ood on the table, a roo over their heand to raise a amily in peace. Tat was lie in the mining camp, and it good. Ill tell you more, in a uture issue. Doug Johnson
