Keep the town’s Christmas Lights switched on

Over the last two years strong winds have battered the Christmas lightson the Main Street. Several sections last year had to be left in the darkbecause the light fixtures in those areas were too badly damaged tobe repaired quickly and Promoting Kilwinning had several complaintssaying that something should be done. Some complaints went furtherand said that many of our present light fixtures are out of date andold fashioned. We agree with these complaints and want to dosomething about them. But we will need help because any money fornew Christmas light fixtures has to come from a major fundraisingeffort by Promoting Kilwinning and its supporters.

Unfortunately, too many people think that all Promoting Kilwinningevents are fully-funded by North Ayrshire Council and, therefore newChristmas lights should be paid for by the Council. This is not true.Every year Promoting Kilwinning applies to North Ayrshire Council forone annual Community Grant (along with many other communitygroups) to help it manage all its Events during the year - the two bigprojects are the Segdoune Carnival and the Switch On of the Christmaslights. Smaller budget items are the Spring and Autumn Cleanups,Fairtrade Fortnight and administration costs. There are no employeecosts as Promoting Kilwinning is staffed by volunteers. A successfulCommunity Grant application is usually around £2,000 depending onthe competition and Local Authority finances. The average annualbudget of Promoting Kilwinning is approximately £6-7,000. Each yearPromoting Kilwinning has to seek other sources of income from its ownfundraising events, donations from local support groups like IrvineHousing Association, ANCHO, the Rotary, Whitehirst and WoodsideCommunity Association and other local and national grant applications.

There is one fundraising hope that may boost our efforts. There is acrowd funding group called Spacehive that helps community groupspurchase Christmas lights by matching our own fundraising effort. An application to Spacehive is planned and together with our own fund-raising effort we are setting a target of £10,000. If we cannot put on animpressive display we will be forced to make a decision on whether wego ahead with our planned Switch On Event on Sat November 21st.

If you want to become involved in our Christmas Lights fundraisingeffort or have a big or small idea that may help us please contact me on01294552284 or email: [email protected]
