Hello KilkAs I write this editorial, I have areal job to stop chuckling atthoughts of last night. Some ofThe West Street Gang went to seethe One Act Comedy Plays atHolsworthy, one of which is a playset within a play. Upon forgettinghis words, an actor looked to theprompt who then gave him theline from the play, ‘He’s forgot hislines!’ The relevance was not lostupon either the audience or theactors and whilst the latter did theirlevel best to stop laughing, the‘corpse’ lying dead centre stagecould not stop visibly shaking. Itwas truly hilarious and mystomach muscles still ache fromthe laughter. We are also just getting ourselvesstraight after the Jumelage(Twinning) celebrations with ourFrench friends and otherTwinners. It was a somewhathectic but really fun packed fewdays and I am somewhat

surprised that more locals havenot joined the merry band. OurFrench friends really enjoy thecamaraderie and are always readyto join in every happening with realenthusiasm (See report on page12).Sadly no Kilk Fete this year but theKilkhampton Parish Support Trustis holding an afternoon event on18 June at Lamb Park, so try andsupport this initiative if you canand help raise funds for this localcharity. I am still trying to convinceGlenda that she will make a betterwheelbarrow than me! It is listedunder Adult Games, so hope Ihaven’t got the wrong end of thestick?Talk about timing. A couple ofweeks ago the Gardening Clubhad their annual competition but itwas not until the following weekthat my super large daffs decidedto bloom and now we have themost amazing tulips, more liketriple dahlias, surely they wouldhave scooped a few prizes twoweeks ago.

A sunny disposition

What a difference it makes whenthe sun finally chooses to shineafter the rather long and coldspring we have had! Children playoutdoors and we meet neighboursas we enjoy our gardens onceagain. There is nothing like a spotof sun to cheer everything up.

A sunny disposition is also a realblessing! We can choose to lookon the bright side of life bycultivating a spirit of joy. St Paulwrote: “Rejoice in the Lord always.I will say it again: rejoice!” andelsewhere he wrote: “Rejoicealways!”

Choosing to be happy is a gift, andone well-worth cultivating. It is soimportant that one Psalmist chided

himself as he wrote: “Why are youdowncast, my soul? Put your hopein God for I will yet praise him.”

Choosing to find the joy in eachday brings its own reward ofhappiness and good cheer. Whenwe decide to be happy we do notjust bless ourselves. Ourhappiness also flows over into thelives of others. Try smiling and seehow many people start to copyyou. Joy is infectious - andprobably one of the best infectionsever to catch!

We can choose to have fun evenwhen everything seems to be setagainst us. I was reminded of thiswhen I went to watch the 5-a-sidefootball at Morwenstow playingfields. It must have been thecoldest day of the May bank

holiday weekend. It was certainlythe foggiest. Thick fog hung overthe pitches and I wondered if thefootball might be cancelled. Butwhen I saw so many enthusiasticand determined youngstersfocussing on their sport I realisedthat even if they were wet through, which they certainly looked, theywere going to let nothing dampentheir games.

I hope, when you read this, that wewill all be enjoying a truly sunnyJune, but if not, then let uscontinue to nurture our own sunnynature so that, whatever theweather, we may rejoice at alltimes!

God bless and much joy to you all,

Sr. Alison

Dear friends,The weather this year has beenmore of a topic than usual. After awinter that was just cold, wet andmiserable for an unusually longtime, spring has come in with asudden rush. One week the treesseemed bare; this week as I writethis piece in the middle of May, thebuds are bursting into leaf. Isn’t theBeech the most beautiful of treesat this time of year? For me thesight of an avenue of Beech treesin that lovely, delicate, greenfoliage, against a blue sky is one ofthe most beautiful sights ofspringtime. It is the herald of thesummer to come. I am putting pento paper, (not literally youunderstand, I’m actually pressingall the wrong keys on mycomputer), the day beforePentecost, the day we celebratethe coming of the Holy Spirit, ourguide and counsellor whosupports, comforts and energisesus so that we can live life for othersin the community and supportthem in turn. I used to say that forme the Holy Spirit acts like atelephone line, a direct line to God.Now in the age of mobile phonesthis becomes an even more aptcomparison as I don’t need a cableanymore to connect me, I rely onan unseen signal. Sometimes thesignal is strong and I can feel thepresence of God in my life, particularly in times of doubt orstress; at other times I drift happilyalong, seemingly unaware of Him,(or Her, this is where our genderterms do not help), yet always Heis there. When I was young I was arebellious sort of lad, a plague formy mother and father! We wereout for a walk one weekend andwere passing some shops on our

way into the countryside and Ibecame fascinated by the windowdisplay in one of the stores. Mumand Dad called me and thenwalked on, assuming I wouldfollow. Of course I didn’t and theneventually I missed them and gotlost. Times were very differentthen, it was safe to lose yourchildren, they usually turned upeventually none the worse for wearand in my case a kindly lady tookme to the nearest police stationwhere we waited for my parents toturn up. I can only have beenabout six but I can rememberclearly the constable who wasdetailed to look after me was alarge, jolly man who somehow

knew how to entertain upset youngchildren and from nowheremanaged to produce a box full oftoys and joined me in playing withthem, a sort of Santa Claus in blueuniform. Now the Holy Spirit maynot be like that constable but whatI remember most about thatincident is the warm comfortablefeeling that I had, that even in mydistress I was being looked afterand cared for. Today, 60 years orso later, I can say that for me theHoly Spirit is that comforter, theone who cares, but also the onewho guides and directs. May theSpirit’s presence be in your life

FELLOWSHIP

Here we are in June; another half ayear gone! Time seems to go soquickly but, having said that, if youare waiting for a bus or someone tocome or something that you arereally looking forward to, time seemsto drag! Yet, in reality, time passes atthe same pace – 60 seconds in aminute, 60 minutes in an hour, 24hours in a day, and 365 days in ayear. It has always been the same. There is just one thing with time –you can’t have it twice. Today ishere, yesterday you will never haveagain. So, what are you doing withyour today? Today you can makesomeone happy or sad, today youcan be selfish or you can putsomeone else first, today you can bemiserable or you can smile. Today isfilled with opportunities that you willtake or miss! Today is the day ofopportunity, don’t miss out on today. The Bible says in Matthew 6:34“tomorrow has enough worries of it’sown, deal with today” (paraphrased)In fact, enjoy today as today is givento you, so what are you going to dowith it?Here is a quote from Thomas Edison“Opportunity is missed by mostpeople because it is dressed inoveralls and looks like work.”Take the opportunities God isgiving you today to make friends,do someone a good turn, invitesomeone for coffee. ‘TREE’ BOOK GROUPThe book for review at the May meeting was: PurpleHibiscus by Chimamanda Ngozi AdichieFifteen year old Kambili lives in fear of her father, acharismatic yet violent Catholic patriarch who, although generous and well respected in thecommunity, is repressive and fanatically religious athome. Escape and the discovery of a new, liberatedway of life come when Nigeria is shaken by a militarycoup, forcing Kambili and her brother to live at theirAunt’s home, a noisy place full of laughter. The visitwill lift the silence from Kambili’s world and, in time, unlock a terrible, bruising secret at the heart of herfamily life.Helpless and seemingly powerless, the family cando nothing but tolerate Papa’s violence, which, despite its brutality still does nothing to affect theirlove for him until finally the power does shift. The father is a monster who is driven by paroxysmsof physical cruelty whenever he feels crossed andduring which he inflicts grievous bodily harm on hiswife and children. The children suffer when they failto come first in school but, especially, when they fallshort in the slightest respect of his extreme religiousdemands. The most shocking thing about the situation is thepower of the church and the Catholic religion usedas an excuse to inflict punishment for perceivedmisdemeanours. The book is harsh at times because the peopleinvolved are harsh. The characters are deep andlayered. The plot is not ambitious and could beconsidered an ‘easy read’. The book transcends thebarriers of language and cultures. The next meeting is Wednesday June 15, 2016 at11am at Bude Golf Club The Book for review is:Nocturnes by Kazuo Ishiguro CONTACT TELEPHONE NUMBER 01288 321962(Dorothy Flaxman)

A clergyman, visiting a zoo, was very excited to see a lion and a lamb lying down together in the same cage. The vicar went tocongratulate the zoo-keeper saying that it was quite amazing to be witnessing the fulfilment of the Church’s peaceful vision forthe millennium. Whereupon the appreciative keeper whispered into the vicar’s ear : ‘Vicar, I must let you into a little secret; thatthere lamb ‘ave to be replaced pretty often!’

THE JUMELAGE 2016(Bude & Stratton & Kilkhampton Twinning)

Whilst doing warm-up exercises in the Crescent CarPark at 12.30 am on a cold Friday morning, I didwonder what are we doing here but when some fortyFrench Twinning friends arrived from Ergué Gabéricafter an hour and a half delay on their Ferry, anysuch thoughts were quickly forgotten. We wereagain reunited with Yves and Francine who hostedus last year and we were looking forward toreturning their superb hospitality. Home to a quickdrink, half an hour’s catch up chat and thankfullysome shut eye, before our 10am rendezvous inBude for a Then & Now Walk round Bude, followedby an explanatory organised tour of the Lifeboatstation. Meanwhile, the youngsters enjoyedkayaking on the canal. After a lunch at Christine’s for twenty of us (with animpromptu ping pong competition) it was on to theMayor’s reception at the Castle, with great singingby the Bencoolen Wreckers. Winding up at 5.30pmwe dashed back to Church Lodge for the finalpreparations for a party for seventeen starting at7pm! Lovely food and great hilarity with the facemasks, followed by Pass the Parcel, requiringputting on hat, scarf and gloves before trying to openthe parcel with a fork and spoon! Everyone delightedin the humour of the occasion.

Surfaced next morning (Saturday) to a typicalEnglish breakfast (fruit salad/ toast/ jams etc) afterwhich twelve of us set off to Boscastle, with othersrelaxing at home and some visiting the OtterSanctuary. On the way up to the coast watchers’station we were treated to the wondrous sight of aguillemot making its young fly for the first time. Weall held our breath as the mother pushed her chickover the edge of the cliff and it tumbled towards therocks below, before suddenly opening its wings andsoaring aloft …..to our thunderous applause. Our

‘The Twins,’ Marie Françoise & Anne get in theParty mood with their new faces

French friends were truly appreciative of thebeautiful and dramatic coastline – and of course thebrilliant sunshine. Upon reaching the top, led byPeter, we then descended on the coast watchers’station and asked in french, for black coffee, pretending that we thought it to be a café! Therethen followed an hilarious exchange in french beforethe men in black realized that some of us wereactually Brits and that it was all a big joke. Wereturned home via the twisty hairpin Widemouthcoast road, that really took our guests’ breath away– nothing to do with my driving!Back at Kilk we freshened up, changed into eveningfinery and set off to the An Mor Hotel (formerlyBude’s Hartland Hotel) for the evening receptionwith dinner for eighty (excellent service!) and a fun,but chaotic at times with a barn dance callerspeaking English.Sunday morning our guests enjoyed a Full Englishbreakfast, with all the trimmings before we set off forthe final adventure – a visit to the Gnome Reserve –so quintessentially British. We naturally all woregnome hats during the tour, before enjoying a picnicthat could only be described as a banquet. Back atKilk we just had time to visit St James Church whereTony Davis showed one of the young lads how toring the bells (he started on the small bell but whenTony put him on the bigun, to his delight, his feetactually left the ground!) Then to the Crescent CarPark and a 6pm departure after a fabulous few days– and nights. Now that’s what I call A JUMELAGE!

Recipe Corner With Maureen HewlettWe have all been making carrot cake for years and 50 years ago it was quite

revolutionary and when I saw in Aprils Waitrose magazine a recipe for cauliflower andapple cake it started me thinking about vegetables in cakes. I have a lovely recipe forParsnip and Hazelnut cake and also a few twists on other every day cakes.

Carrot Cake – your usual recipe plus 3 stem ginger balls finely chopped.Lemon Drizzle – your usual recipe plus 2 grated courgettes with all the water squeezed out.

Cauliflower and Apple Cake150g unsalted butter, softened150g cauliflower in small florets150g caster sugar2 small Brae burn apples grated2 eggs, beaten175g plain flour1 tsp ground cinnamon1 tsp baking powder½ tsp bicarbonate of soda50g sultanas50g desiccated coconut½ tsp ground cinnamonWhite chocolate butter cream:75g white chocolate, chopped150g unsalted butter, softened175g sifted icing sugar1 ½ tbsp whole milk½ tsp vanilla extract

Preheat oven 180C/ GM4. Grease and line the base of deep 18cmloose bottomed cake tin.Simmer the cauliflower for 16-18min until really tender, drain, rununder cold water then pat dry.Whizz the cauli in a food processor until finely chopped. Pulse inthe butter, sugar and apple. Gradually add the eggs then sift in theflour, cinnamon, baking powder, bicarb and a pinch of salt. Pulseagain then fold in the sultanas and coconut until well combined.Spoon into the tin, level the top and bake for 45-55minutes. Coverloosely with foil after 35mins if it browns too quickly. Cool on a wirerack.Melt the white chocolate and set aside to cool slightly. Using anelectric whisk cream the butter until pale and fluffy, gradually beatin the icing sugar, then the milk and vanilla extract. The Valley

It lies beyond the range of hills that shield it from our gazeThis summer morn its air is calm and still,High wooded slopes lead down to fields cloaked with a silver hazeWe see it all as we come o’er the hill.

The wreathing morning mist soon clears, as early sun climbshigh,It warms the air and lifts it like a veil.Revealing miles of meadows green beneath a pale blue skyAs we survey this lovely widespread vale.

We see a checkerboard of fields marked out with grey stone wallsLush pastures there, where sheep and cattle graze,Divided by a tumbling stream, with tiny waterfallsAs it runs down midst banks like smooth green baize.

And as we tread the grassy strip that leads us on our wayBy our path’s side a skylark starts its flight; The beauty of its clear sweet song heralds a perfect day;And while we look, it disappears from sight.

As we descend to our walks end, all sounds become more clear,Nearest of all, the bleating of those sheep,The lowing cows, the buzz of bees, all pleasing to the earProviding us with memories to keep.

The earth is soft beneath our feet, the air is clear and pure,Our worries cease, no need to fret or pine,For all the ills of work, or life, this is the perfect cure,No need for pills, it’s Nature’s anodyne.

This ancient peaceful valley, worked by men for untold years,So welcoming beneath the open sky,Has nurtured hope, brought peace of mind, allayed their manyfears; No need to ask, we’ve found the reason why!

Eric Latter
