The Silver Linings Playbook Life doesn’t always go accord-ing to plan. Pat Solitano has lost everything - his house, his job and his wife. He now finds him-self living back with his mother and father after spending eight months in a State institution on a plea bargain. Pat is deter-mined to rebuild his life, remain positive and reunite with his wife

despite the challenging circum-stances of their separation. All Pat’s parents want is for him to get back on his feet. When Pat meets Tiffany, a mysterious girl with problems of her own, things get complicated. Tiffany offers to help Pat reconnect with his wife, but only if he’ll do some-thing very important for her in return. As their deal plays out, an unexpected bond begins to form between them.

Book of the weekThe story of Lance Armstrong - the cyclist who recovered from testicular cancer and went on to win the Tour de France a record seven times, the man who wrote a bestselling and inspira-tional account of his life, the charitable benefactor - seemed almost too good to be true. And it was. As early as Armstrong’s first victory on the Tour in 1999, Sunday Times journalist David Walsh had reason to think that the in-credible performances we were seeing from Armstrong were literally too good to be true. Based on insider informa-

tion and dogged research, he began to unmask the truth. Cycling’s biggest star used every weapon in his armoury to protect his name. But he could not keep everyone silent. In the autumn of 2012, the USADA published a damn-ing report on Armstrong that resulted in the American being stripped of his seven Tour victories and left his reputation in shreds. Walsh’s long fight to reveal the truth had been vindicated. This book tells the compelling story of one man’s struggle to bring that truth to light against all the odds.

THE Tiger Woods series has been around in various guises for a quarter of a century now, ticking along nicely with a stream of steady, if not spec-tacular, upgrades each year. Game physics, playing and online modes have all been honed and improved in recent additions, keeping up the constant challenge of freshening up a sports sim each year. This year’s game offers more of the same - evolution rather than revolution, but with a host of intriguing additions that add depth to an already genre-leading game. For starters, the full 20 Championship courses have been

added, plus there’s the chance to play for the Grand Slam, with all four majors added for the first time in a golfing game. Add to that the fas-cinating ‘take down legends’ mode, that replicates playing with some of the greats of the game dating back generations, and there’s plenty going on to keep hardcore players entertained. But for the more casual player, or those out of the loop of recent editions, the game comes across intimidating and the controls are initially difficult to master, of-fering those short of patience little relief.

Ten is the debut studio album by the American rock band Pearl Jam, released on August 27, 1991 through Epic Records. Following the disbanding of bassist Jeff Ament and guitarist Stone Gossard’s previous group Mother Love Bone, the two recruited vocalist Eddie Vedder, guitarist Mike McCready and drummer Dave Krusen to form Pearl Jam in 1990. Most of the songs began as instrumental jams, to which Vedder added lyrics about topics such as depression, homelessness and abuse. Ten was

not an immediate success, but by late 1992 it had reached number two on the Billboard 200 chart. The album produced three hit singles: “Alive “, “Even Flow” and “Jeremy”. While Pearl Jam was accused of jumping on the Grunge bandwagon at the time, Ten was instrumental in popularizing Alternative Rock in the mainstream. In February 2013, the album was certified diamond by the RIAA in the United States, cross-ing the 10 million mark in sales. It remains Pearl Jam’s most commer-cially successful album.

MIRRORING the extreme weather this winter, fashion trends took a cold and moody turn.

The catwalks delivered dark pal-ettes, lashings of leather and gothic-inspired lace, so it’s no surprise de-signers have done a 180 and lightened up for spring.

It’s nothing but a sunny outlook for the new season. Rejoice in sugary sweet pastels, fresh-as-a-daisy florals and rainbow metallics that will trans-form your wardrobe from drab to de-lightful.

If the weather isn’t putting a spring in your step, then shopping for the high street’s new hits will.

CANDY SWEETEaster is coming but you can get your sugar fix from the array of delectable shades fashion has to offer.

Pick ‘n’ mix from the prettiest of pas-tel tones, ranging from peppermint green through to parma violet.

For maximum impact, parade your pastels top-to-toe. These shades work so well together you can mix and match different ice-cream colours with ease like a knickerbocker glory.

Avoid looking sickly sweet by keep-ing your silhouette super-sleek and minimal with structured pieces. Try sweetening up your office look for spring with pastel suiting in powdery blue or pale pink.

Update your jeans drawer with pas-tel hues - the easiest way to access the look without looking like you have a sugar addiction.

FASHION FLORISTRYThe perennial print is blooming all over the high street once again like a wild meadow.

Florals were big news for the au-tumn/winter season but this time they’ve lost their moody, dark palette for a fresh and bright bouquet.

Blooms range from traditional ditsy petals to futuristic florals and single eye-catching buds.

Matchy-matchy floral suiting is a versatile buy for the new season. Wear together for a statement arrangement that will turn heads or tame the print, wearing your blazer and bottoms sep-arately with plain colours.

Once high summer has landed, go botanical with this season’s bunch of

wild and bright tropical florals.

RAINBOW METALLICSThe 2012 Olympics have been and gone and the gold, silver and bronze medal inspirations shelved in favour of something brighter.

Metallics have turned colourful for the summer of 2013. Think Quality Street wrapper-inspired jewel tones you might find glistening in the tin - green, purple, blue and orange.

Avoid head-to-toe creations and keep this lustrous clothing as one show-stopping piece. Leather is a cool fabric to pull off the trend and the matte texture will counteract the shine.

If you’re not brave enough to at-tempt coloured metallic, get your gloss fix with accessories. Bags and shoes have also undergone bright metallic makeovers for a variation on traditional precious metals.

STRIPE CHICHorizontal or vertical, walk the line this season - polka dots are out and stripes are in.

The bigger the stripe, the bigger the

impact and a fail-safe monochrome combo of black and white guarantees the wow effect. Think Beetlejuice for inspiration.

If monochrome isn’t your thing, then look to stripes in varying shades of brights, pastels or neon. The timeless nautical trio of red, white and blue will never date, especially when it comes to holiday wardrobes.

There’s no shortage of linear op-tions, whether you want to show off your stripes in a Sixties-esque shift dress or keep things simple with a top or shirt.

Keep your body shape in mind when you’re choosing the direction of your stripes for a streamlined look.

NEON NUANCEForget the Eighties, neon is back with a thoroughly modern twist - and it’s not just for teenagers.

Eye-popping yellow, pinks and greens are the easiest way to inject a bright kick into your look. You don’t even have to wear a full-on fluoro cre-ation because blazers, dresses and tops come with surprise neon trims.

Topping the colour chart is acid yel-

low, which is just about everywhere this season. If plain block colours feel OTT then soften the look with lace or florals to give your neon a feminine touch.

Counteract the effect of the uber-bright shade with an understated out-fit and neutral shades for a wearable take on the Day-Glo trend.

POWER PRINTSPrint aficionados will be spoilt for choice with the high street transform-ing into a virtual art gallery of arrest-ing designs.

Bold graphic prints pack a punch if you favour clean, minimalist lines. Di-verting from the stripes craze, super-sized zig-zags and checks are also hot property on the high street.

Look to abstract watercolours if you want a print with less restraint, seek-ing out graduated colours in your fa-vourite hues.

If you’re feeling extra adventurous, try mixing your print mediums. Pick out one common colour from each pattern to keep the look cohesive and you’ll be looking print perfect.

THE OUTLOOK IS SUNNY

Page 52: Kilkenny Reporter - 3 April 2013

Caring for elderly parentsIT’S never too soon to start planning ahead for what might come. That way, you’ll be ready if your parent suddenly becomes ill or disabled. There are three critical steps in this planningprocess:

1. Talk with your parent - it’s not easy to do, but get your parent to discuss (with you or perhaps some other per-son) several issues including their fears, needs, priorities and wishes, their financial situation, their future medical care and housing options if they will be unable to remain in the home environment in the future.

2. Make sure your parent has an up-to-date will, a durable power of attor-ney, and advance directives specifying their wishes regarding important mat-ters.

3. Do your homework - we all think that our parents won’t need compan-ions, much less nursing home care, but many people need one or the other, or both. Do some research nowso you’re ready if such help is needed. Make a few calls to find out about senior services in your parent’s com-munity. Visit senior housing facilities so you know what’s out there, and ifnecessary, put your parent on wait-ing lists. If you live far away, have the name of a neighbour or volunteer who

can check on your parent if there’s trouble, the names of doctors andlawyers, and a phone book from the community.

Taking Care of Yourself -IT may seem like heresy to do things for yourself when your parent needs help, but it’s a crucial part of the job. The fact is, you’ll be of little use to your parent if you are exhausted, esentful, de-pressed or sick — and all too many caregivers are exactly that.

Define the job - As much as you may want to, you cannot do it all. So decide what you are willing to do. Then make a list and stick with it. Don’t keep try-ing to do more.

Accept help - This is a big job and most of us cannot do it without loads of helpers. Sign upfor community ser-vices (meal delivery, homemaker pro-

grams, adult day care, in-home health care, etc.). Recruit other relatives to help and see if neighbours or your parent’s friends might take on some small tasks.

Take breaks - If your parent’s care consumes a significant chunk of your life, get away from the task occasion-ally. Find someone who can step in for you or see if there aren’t respite services in your parent’s community. Go out for dinner with a mate, have a bath, or take a vacation. Do something else, think about something else. Your parent will survive and you will be a better caregiver.

Spend time with friends - Studies show that caregivers who have so-cial supports (friends, family, support groups) experience less depression and illness. Coffee with a pal may feel like a luxury, but it’s a necessity.

Laugh - Laughter makes the world more sane (or at least it makes the in-sanity more fun). And scientists have shown that it actually improves one’s immune system and circulation, not tomention one’s outlook on life and ability to cope with the impossible.

No comparisons, please - Don’t lis-ten to other’s opinions of what you’re doing and never compare yourself to

other caregivers. Every situation is dif-ferent. You may have a more stressful relationship with your parent, fewer supports, a more demanding job, or just different priorities and makeup. Trust in yourself to find the balance that is right for you.

What to look for when touring a nursing home:-Proximity to family and friends-Safe, well-maintained building and grounds

-Residents who are busy, well-

groomed and content

-Pleasant, caring staff

-On-call medical care

-Flexibility in meeting residents’ needs

-Nutritious, appetising food

-Ample rooms that can be furnished

by the resident

-Good inspection report

-Pleasant, caring staff and ample

staff-to-patient ratio
