“THE WEST SYMBOLIZES ADVENTURE, freedom, space and gold, not only of troy weight but the gold of Eden,” A.B. Guthrie Jr. told a group in Montana 40 years ago. As visitors to the Westin Kierland Resort & Spa, you have an opportunity to enjoy someof these riches here in Arizona: cultural, recreational, entertainment and scenic. Here is a shortlist comprising11 destinations. We think you’ll find each rewarding, entertaining—and perhaps life-changing.

The Grand Canyon The grandest of Earth’s treasures: 1.2 million acres,5.45 trillion cubic yards. Coursing through here for sixmillion years, the Colorado River runs 277 miles in themile-deep gorge, with the South Rim at 7,000 feet andthe spectacular North Rim, closed during winter, at8,000 feet.

Established in 1919, Grand Canyon National Park preserves a landscape that began forming two billion years ago. Many species live here: 373 bird, 91 mammal, 57 reptiles and amphibians, 17 fish.

Humans have been in the area for 12,000 years, andarcheologists have recorded nearly 4,300 archeologicalresources, with just six percent of the park studied. Fourbuildings are National Historic Landmarks, and 10properties and structures are on the National Registerof Historic Places.

Returning to his home state to become the WaveMaster of the Kierland FlowRider was a unique process. The first step toward earning the title was submitting a two-minute video demonstrating his skills and qualifications for the job. After completing some phoneinterviews, the finalists’ videos were posted online, andthe top three vote getters were invited to the FlowRidergrand-opening event to compete in a public surf contest. RESERVED EXCLUSIVELY FOR RESORT guests only, the Kierland FlowRider debuted at Westin Kierland inSeptember 2012, bringing the California surf lifestyleto the Sonoran Desert. The 6,000-sq.-ft. outdoor spaceincludes a dual FlowRider, a viewing platform and aseating area. The best part is, there is no skill requiredto try flowboarding for the first time.

The FlowRider itself is a wave simulator with twojets that push 30,000 gallons of water up the surface at a rate of 25 to 30 miles per hour. The ride surface is made of a special composite material that absorbs the energy of impacts, so even if you wipe out, it’s painless and easy to get back up and try again.

While many refer to the new FlowRider experienceas “surfing in the desert,” the sport of flowboardingitself is actually a hybrid of snowboarding, surfing,

In addition, the spa’s smoothie bar has moved awayfrom using powdered proteins in its recipes, in favor of incorporating veggies into the mix. Many are alsosweetened with the spa’s namesake plant, the agave, which rates 39 on the glycemic index, much lower than refined sugars and artificial sweeteners.

Agave’s wellness practices include a series of treatments in an Eastern Essence series, incorporatingtraditional Chinese medicine and holistic modalitiesthat jumpstart the body’s own healing mechanisms. Thesetreatments include acupuncture, Wellness Massage,Thai table massage and others. In a unique treatmentcalled Tui’ Na, the therapist focuses on acu-points andmeridians to stimulate the body’s circulatory, lymphaticand neurological systems. The word “qi,” or life force, iscentral to Taoist beliefs, and this treatment aims toestablish harmonious flow between this life force andthe blood.

Two of the spa’s signature treatments were developedby therapists at Agave and are exclusive to Starwoodhotels. The Rain Massage is similar in style to a traditional hot-stone massage, but instead of stones, the technique utilizes heated, smooth rainsticks, whichretain a consistent level of heat more readily than dostones. The therapist then employs a cutting-edge rowing technique to massage the muscles. The pairingof this rainstick massage with aromatherapy results in a relaxing, renewing experience.

AT THE RESORT’S AGAVE, THE ARIZONA SPA, theatmosphere is minimalist, striving to capture theessence of Arizona, using Native American as well asEastern influences in its treatments and surroundings.

Outside of each treatment room, guests will find aburden basket, one of the many Native American influences found at the spa. Apache women used burdenbaskets to collect firewood, herbs, berries or other itemsher family might need. At the end of the day, shewould bring the contents inside and hang the basketoutside the dwelling entrance. When visitors arrived, they were expected to deposit their worries and troublesinto the basket so that the visit would be a pleasantone, without negative feelings or burdens. At Agave, the burden basket serves as a reminder to guests toleave their troubles at the door in order to fullyimmerse themselves in the treatments. This small detail sets the stage for the restoration and renewal that await.

Carol Ford, spa director at Agave, says, “It’s importantthat our practices and treatments here at the spa echoour ethics.” This means incorporating natural and localingredients into the treatments and services wheneverpossible. As such, one of the spa’s yoga instructors isalso a certified nutritionist, and leads monthly interactivelunch-and-learn sessions, with menus created aroundfruits and vegetables that are in season, and lessons inwhen it makes sense to buy organic, and when it doesn’t.
