The American Industrial Center complex is approximately one mil-lion square feet of commercial space, which is two blocks long by one block deep. It was built over several decades at the beginning of the 20th century to accommodate the expansion of the original user, the American Can Company.
Although it was converted to multiple tenant use some time ago, it needed A.D.A. improvements to increase accessibility. A new complying elevator was deemed necessary.
The project was rendered more complex due to the fact that the buildings that need to be served by the elevator have different floor heights. In addition, the existing exit stair has further differing landing elevations.
The program was to create a new infill building which connected these various levels. It also included the new elevator, new lobbies and a new main entrance. It was decided to integrate the required elevator shaft and penthouse as unobtrusively as possible with the existing complex.
