School programs have changed significantly from the

days of our parents. Excursions, camps, and other

activities provide students with many opportunities

to learn about their world and to try out many

opportunities. One school that is responding to the

challenge of providing students with meaningful,

out of school learning experiences is The Essington

School Darwin.

Principal David Cannon said: “The school seeks to provide a variety of opportunities

for students to explore their world and to discover the many skills and attributes they

possess. We try to plan a program of varied, age-appropriate experiences for students

over their school years”.

One of the school’s unique programs, now in its twelfth year, is their Year 10 Learn To Fly

Program.Students participate in an intensive program of theory lessons and practical flying

lessons under the direction of instructor, Gavin Wrigley. Gavin is an experienced

nationally accredited gliding instructor with many years of experience locally, nationally

and overseas. A European built single engine powered glider is used for the lessons. The

flying lessons, held at the Batchelor airstrip one hundred kilometers south of Darwin, are

designed not only to teach students the basics of flight and flying, but also to develop

their self confidence and to encourage them to reach their potential.

The Essington School Darwin has been developing its Music and Dance programs

over recent years. Large numbers of students are now involved in these programs

and continuing to excel each year as students are encouraged to strive for, and reach,

individual goals. The Middle School program sees students down to six years of age participating in Dance

Performance Evenings. Group display programs use Jazz and Modern Dance movements

and techniques. In class students learn new moves and techniques as well as revise

techniques to create group dance routines. Students are often called on to perform at

community and cultural events.

Music education commences in the primary years and extends through to Year 12 at the

Senior College. Interest groups allow the students to extend their knowledge in their

area of interest. In Year 3 all students have the option of learning the violin, viola or cello

as part of their weekly classroom program. In Years 4 & 5 students are encouraged to

continue with these lessons. Students can also participate in instrumental lessons in a

wide variety of instruments including piano, keyboard, violin, guitar, clarinet, trumpet,

French horn, and percussion to name a few. Vacation school programs are also offered

during the July vacation for interested students.

David Cannon, Principal of Essington School said: “ We think that these programs

are important first steps in building student confidence and opening up the world of

opportunities to them”.

The school has limited enrolments at some levels and is currently accepting enrolments

for 2013 and 2014. For further information, please call our office on Phone: 8985 0100.

Making co-sleeping safe

• Use a bassinet that attaches safely and securely to parents’ bed, which allows both mother and baby to have their own sleeping space, while baby still enjoys sleeping close to mommy for easier feeding and comforting.• Place babies to sleep on their backs• Be sure there are no crevices between the mattress and guardrail or headboard that allows baby’s head to sink into.• Make sure your mattress is firm• Keep the bedding light and minimal• Never sleep on a sofa with your baby• Keep your baby warm, not hot, and dress him lightly for sleep• Don’t let your baby and toddler sleep next to each other in bed• Your baby should never be left alone on the bed• Buy a rail to attach to the side of the bed or put him in a safe place, such as a bassinette or cot, while you are out of the room. • If your baby is six months or younger, he should sleep in a cot next to your bed• Don’t bed-share if you smoke or are under the influence of drugs, alcohol, or medications that affect your sleep.

• Ease of breastfeeding• Better sleep for mom and baby• Mothers can react to baby• Bed bonding results in more independent children• Allows working parents to connect with their child• Research shows that co-sleeping infants cry less during the night• Infants who sleep near to parents have more stable temperatures
