OUR STORY...

Page 9: KidsLife Magazine December 2012

Secondary schools are very different places to those experienced by parents and grandparents. They offer very different programs and co-curricular programs for students in the teenage years. These programs maintain their engagement with school, and allow students to explore their world and themselves in the world.

CHOICE AND CHALLENGEIN THE MIDDLE YEARS

The Essington School Darwin has been a leading, innovative Middle School in Darwin from its establishment 15 years ago. In the mid 1990s it pioneered Middle School education in Darwin. The Essington School Principal, David Cannon said: “Beyond the classroom programs in Middle School, it is important for students to be engaged, connected and affirmed as they grow through these early adolescent years. Choice and challenge in co-curricular programs is important for students from Years 6 to 9, and we work to provide a variety of optional programs for our students”.The Essington School’s Music, Singing and Dance programs provide a focus for the creative talent of students in the Middle School. A large number are involved in after school music lessons, band and singing practice, and dance activities. The School is planning to expand its after school and Saturday programs in music, singing and dance in 2013.Students over 14 years of age are all involved in the outstanding Duke of Edinburgh Award program with most students attaining their Bronze Award by the end of Year 10. This program provides students with a structured community service and outdoor adventure program.Students also participate in School outdoor education camps at Years 6 and 7 level to different locations including Lake Bennett, and Litchfield National Park.Students can also participate in a number of optional student tours to the snow (for skiing and snowboarding), Cairns and the Great Barrier Reef, Singapore, and to the School’s sister school in Tokyo. In 2013 students will also have the opportunity to participate in student tours to Borneo, and to Chiang Mai, Northern Thailand. The School’s growing Asian Languages and Culture programs will see an increasing number of tours available to students to Asia.Because of the schools limited number of classes, and small class numbers enrolments are limited at all levels. Early enrolments for Years 6 to 9 are encouraged with limited places available. For further information contact the School’s Registrar on Phone 8985 0100 for further information.

My son once said “Christmas was for children and his mother”. He was right in a way as I just love Christmas with all the modern day trappings of shopping for presents, planning the food for christmas dinner, Christmas decorations, listening to Christmas carols and pondering on the biblical account of the very first Christmas. It is important to create Christmas traditions for your family. Family traditions create the fibre that holds families together. Think back over your own childhood to a special Christmas and pin point what made that Christmas so memorable. It may have been the Christmas tree, or the presents of a special person or it may have been just having a wonderful time with family. Maybe Christmas memories weren’t that wonderful for you. Don’t despair write a new Christmas script especially for your family. Put on your favourite Christmas CD gather up paper and pen and make a list of all things Christmas. Now put a tick beside the points that are doable for this Christmas. Plan to add something to Christmas from your list every year. You are now on your way to creating a positive Christmas tradition for your family. Take lots of happy family photos and use the Christmas photo album as a part of your Christmas décor and as record of family christmases gone by. Another way to get into the Christmas spirit is to think of others. Use your special talents to create something to give as a gift to neighbours and friends for example homemade cookies or a homemade Christmas tree decoration. I like to make mini christmas cakes. If you are time poor, wrap up a few sweets in cellophane and tie them up with a pretty ribbon. It is a good idea to start planning for Christmas early so that you aren’t overwhelmed on the day. Get as many jobs done in advance as possible. For example have the presents all wrapped up two weeks before the big day, give the house a good clean beforehand so that a quick clean is all that is needed. Plan Christmas dinner then shop for the ingredients in advance. Factor into your Christmas some rest as overtired Christmas providers can turn the whole day on its head and the memories created may not be that positive. Above all relax and enjoy the day with your family no one will even notice if the ham is a bit overdone. So get into the Christmas spirit and plan to have the best Christmas ever.

Cheers! From Territory Child Care Group
