Kids Can Learn with Franklin — Math Stories: Subtraction

In this Kids Can Learn with Franklin workbook, the development of concepts related to subtractionis supported.

The activity pages have been designed for thefirst grader who has had some early experiencewith subtraction. The activities are presented withinthematic story frameworks that reflect familiarFranklin story events. These frameworks provide arelevant context for exploring subtraction stories to10 in the first section of the workbook and then to18 later in the book.

Throughout the book, Franklin offers manyopportunities to “break apart” sets of numbersand to solve subtraction stories both numericallyand pictorially. Opportunities to work with andapply basic subtraction facts are also offered.Visual models help young learners to make senseof the “breaking apart” or “taking away” natureof subtraction. Opportunities to create their ownnumber sentences both numerically and pictoriallyencourage children to share how much they havelearned.

While reinforcing the essential number facts to 18,the appealing Franklin illustrations and familiar storyframeworks provide a motivating and meaningfulenvironment for children to improve their grasp ofbasic subtraction concepts.

This workbook supports the child’s growingawareness of and skill with

• concepts about the “breaking apart” natureof subtraction

• writing simple number sentences with increasingindependence

• writing number sentences both horizontally andvertically using 1 or 2 subtrahends and minuends

• basic subtraction facts to 18 using visual models

• mental subtraction facts to 18

• solving simple subtraction problems withsubtrahends to 18

• using a subtraction table

• creating diagrams to demonstrate and describethe process of subtracting numbers to 18

For continued learning in this area, you might wantto try these activities:

• use concrete materials such as pennies, small toys, blocks, etc. to help the child further reinforce theconcept of subtraction (a larger group broken intoa smaller group)

• use these concrete objects to make subtractionstories that you can solve together

• use a chalk board or a magic writing slate toencourage the child to continue writing thesubtraction stories begun with Franklin

To make the most of this math learning opportunity, adult involvement is highly recommended.Use the ideas suggested below to help create a wonderful learning experience for you and the child.

Read the scenario and instructions on each page to the child

Count the objects together and then count how many will be taken away

Provide lots of encouragement and help to ensure that the child is successful — subtraction is often a challengingconcept for young learners and many opportunities to apply these ideas are often required

While completing an activity, talk about how when you break a group the result is a smaller group, how theproblem must be written with the largest number first or on top, and that number sentences can be written bothhorizontally or vertically and the answer is the same

Allow the child to have some free time on each page — talk about what is happening in the mini-stories, etc.

Keep the learning sessions short — one or two pages a session is enough for most children
