DESCRIPTION

Kids at Heart is the print newsletter of Children’s Health Foundation of Vancouver Island. It is published three times a year and is one way that we communicate with our families, donors, and volunteers. In it, we share the stories of special people in our community; we thank individuals, businesses, and organizations for their support; and we highlight the work of the Foundation and how we are helping children and youth on Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands in British Columbia.

concerned citizens in Victoria formed the Crisis Intervention and Public Information Society of Greater Victoria, which runs NEED2 Suicide Prevention Education and Support. The agency offers 24-hour crisis and emotional support for youth by text messaging; daily support by email; and an online service, youthspace.ca, that offers preventative mental and emotional health support as well as an online chat component.

Since 1996, NEED2 has also facilitated the Suicide Awareness for Youth (SAY) program in local high schools. Last year, thanks in part to a grant from Children’s Health Foundation of Vancouver Island, the agency expanded SAY into the Whole School Program, which educates teachers, counsellors, staff, and administrators in addition to students. Eventually, NEED2 will offer sessions for parents.

The program teaches participants to recognize warning signs of suicide and to connect a youth in trouble with resources that will help, resources like those offered

A child’s death by suicide is one of the most unnatural events we can experience. It ripples deep into the community, affecting family, friends, teachers, and acquaintances. Consider the tragedy of 14-year-old Amanda Todd — her heartbreaking story rippled around the world, sparking important conversations about suicide, bullying, gender-based violence, and youth mental health.

Thanks to media best practices that limit media coverage of suicide deaths, few youth suicides receive the media attention Amanda’s sad story garnered. But youth deaths by suicide are more prevalent than we would like to believe,

and not just in faraway places, but here in B.C. According to the 2009 B.C. Vital Statistics report, suicide is the second leading cause of death for 15- to 18-year-olds in British Columbia. On Southern Vancouver Island alone, five percent of youth – that’s 1 in 20 – have attempted suicide in the last year.

These statistics are even more disturbing when you consider that the youth suicide rate in B.C. has declined significantly over the past 20 years.

The decline can be partially attributed to programs and services developed in response to these statistics. In 1971,

by NEED2 and other services in B.C. like the Vancouver Island Crisis Line and 1-800-SUICIDE.

“This is the second year of the Whole School Program, and we are pleased with the results,” says Jane Arnott, Executive Co-Director of NEED2, who has been with the society for 10 years. “It’s difficult to measure the success of a prevention program, but we find there is a greater willingness to address suicide and mental health in our community… We get a lot of community support from every municipality as well as foundations. It’s an indication that they value NEED2 as a community resource and show a willingness to engage people in conversation about suicide and mental health.”

By inviting NEED2 into schools, teachers and administrators show their support for a comprehensive education program around suicide and youth. “It’s essential administration and staff hear the same message as the students so they can support their student body,” says Justine Thomson, NEED2 Manager of Suicide Education and Awareness. “I’m hearing from school guidance counsellors that they are checking in with students [who need help] daily.”

To measure the impact of the program, participants of the Whole School Program are given a survey before and after the presentation. Generally, before the presentation, youth indicate they don’t know where to go for help when they feel low. Afterward, they list a myriad of resources available to support them — guidance counsellors, websites, phone numbers, and organizations. They are equipped to help themselves or help a friend in crisis. The surveys are anonymous unless students choose to give their names on the form. If they indicate they would

like to be contacted, school guidance counsellors follow-up and get them the help they need.

NEED2 is one of three programs to receive funding for youth suicide and/or mental health programming from Children’s Health Foundation in the last few years. The Foundation also funded the Gatekeeper Program, a program which helps teachers and school staff identify mental illness in youth. Additionally, the programs at Ledger House, the Island’s only youth mental health facility, benefit from the Foundation’s support. The Foundation is able to grant to these vital initiatives that protect our youth thanks to donations from the community.

“There is a lot in the media about suicide and mental health,” Jane says. “We are able to take advantage of a willingness to talk about it and engage people in the conversation.”

“The presentations also have the effect of increasing understanding and empathy for what others are going through,” Justine adds. “Together, we are protecting a huge population.” Through their financial support, donors and supporters of Children’s Health Foundation are part of the coalition to protect our young population.

P. 4 Children mean the world to us.

Welcome to the first issue of Kids at Heart, our first newsletter since we changed our name to Children’s Health Foundation of Vancouver Island.

The fall was a season of renewal for the Foundation, starting with our name change and rebranding in October. Support for the change has been overwhelmingly positive. I hope you agree that the new look and name better tell the story of who we are and how we help children, youth, and families across the Islands. Children have always been first in our hearts, and now they come first in our name.

On page 22, you will find a Q & A that will answer questions our

supporters have asked us about the name change. If you would like to share your thoughts, please call me at 250-519-6721 or email [email protected]. I look forward to our conversation.

We are proud to support many hardworking organizations that make a difference to children’s health on the Islands. In our issue’s lead story, we share with you the important work of one of these organizations, NEED2 Suicide Prevention Education and Support. Thanks to a $20,000 grant from Children’s Health Foundation, this organization teaches youth and high school teachers and staff to recognize signs of crisis in youth and connect them with counsellors.

On page 6, we look back at the first year of operations at Jeneece Place. The house is a resounding success, having hosted over 325 families. It is

a daily reminder of the good that can be achieved when a community works together. Thank you for supporting Jeneece Place.

This issue also celebrates the hundreds of individuals, businesses, and organizations who made a gift to the Foundation last fiscal year. Thank you for giving generously in support of the health of children in our community.

2012 was an exciting year for the Foundation: the opening of Jeneece Place, the announcement of HerWay Home (which will be featured in our next issue), our name change, and grants to many organizations, all of which help thousands of children and families on the Islands. With your help, in 2013 we will improve the health and well-being of even more children.

Welcome to new board membersFrom the Board

Children’s Health Foundation’s Board of Directors is a group of community minded people who are responsible for the leadership of the Foundation. Each member brings unique skills and experience to the table and plays a key role in enabling the Foundation to support kids and families on Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands each year. This fall, the Foundation was pleased to welcome four new members.

Our thanks to Graeme Lee, Susan Mehinagic and Patty Koniczek for their years of service on the Board.

Graeme joined the Board in 2003 and was instrumental in the completion of Jeneece Place as Chair of the committee.

A member since 2007, Susan’s knowledge and skill in charity law, finance and governance were critical to the growth of the Foundation.

Patty became a community advisor in 2006 and joined the Board in 2010. Her expertise and passion for cars and kids were invaluable to the success of the Motorcar Gathering.

P. 6 Children mean the world to us.

An update from Jeneece Place, one year inA Home with Heart

The story of Jeneece Place is a powerful demonstration of what can be accomplished when a community works together.

The doors to Jeneece Place, the home away from home on the grounds of the Victoria General Hospital, opened on January 23, 2012, and our first family moved in the same day. Since then, more than 325 families have stayed at the house. Their stays have ranged from one night to 16 weeks.

The house has been busy since the day it opened. More than once, we have had families waiting for their room to be finished as the departing family

was heading out the door! We improvised a few nights to accommodate families. “Room 11,” a renovated schoolbus camper, housed a family in the lower parking lot. “Room 12,” a fifth wheel camper in the hospital parking lot, was home to a mom and one of her twins, while the other twin benefitted from extra time in the neonatal intensive care unit.

Families demonstrate a sense of belonging at Jeneece Place; they care for and maintain the house as their own home. This means sharing meals, cleaning the kitchen, and vacuuming hallways as they clean their rooms. One dad did an amazing job weeding garden beds. Another dad, a long-term stay at the house, brought bike hooks, 2 x 4s and tools, and organized the outside shed. Another day, he tightened fridge handles and cleaned out oven fan filters.

The expression “Home is where the heart is” comes to life at Jeneece Place. Families connect and share while making dinner side by side in the kitchen; they have tea and reflect on the highs and lows of having a child with a health problem.

The families form a support network, helping each other through hard days.

While the house brings people together on the inside, it continues to unite the community on the outside, too. Peninsula Landscaping donated lawn cutting services; Belmont Secondary School students maintain the gardens at the front and back of the house; volunteers from the View Royal Garden Club came by on a Sunday afternoon to help with fall clean up outside.

During the week, volunteer cooks come to the house, recipes in hand, and fill the house with smells of homemade yam and bean stew, corn chowder and tuna casseroles, and scones, cookies and cakes.

Children’s Health Foundation published its first children’s storybook last fall, the Christmas story Island Santa.

The book, by local writer Sheryl McFarlane and illustrator Sheena Lott, recalls the annual transformation of Kaare “Island Santa” Norgaard’s ship, the Blue Fjord, into a floating sleigh that delivered Christmas gifts to Gulf Island children who would otherwise have done without.

A copy of Island Santa will be offered to all families

who stay at Jeneece Place.

Island Santa is available in many local book stores and online. If your favourite book shop is not selling it, many will place special orders.

Thanks to Fairway Markets’ Pack the Pantry campaign, we have gift cards to buy kitchen staples, which all the families use. Home-cooked meals and baking contribute hugely to creating a healthy and nurturing environment for families.

Over the holidays, we cozied up the house to make the season bright for the families who stayed over Christmas. Thanks to a generous donation from Adrian and Tracey D’Silva, 5,000 Christmas lights illuminated the exterior of the house. Mike Fleming of Woodstock Evergreens donated two trees, one for the families to decorate and one for the Great Room — a beautiful, 12-foot tree decorated by Liz Butterfield. Families found a quiet moment to read Island Santa by the fireplace amid festive garlands and twinkling decorations. It was lovely!

Jeneece Place is a place of peace and of healing. It is a place where community takes care of community, and we are all better for it.

If you haven’t had a chance to visit Jeneece Place, take a a virtual tour at jeneeceplace.org.

St. Margaret’s Junior School

The girls at St. Margaret’s Junior School raised over $5,000 for our

Equipment Fund through their Book and Bear Sale and the Girls Just

Wanna Have Fun(draiser). We are especially grateful to Natasha Carville

and the teachers and staff who teach the girls the importance of giving

in their community. The money has bought three special car seats for

kids in casts, plus craft supplies for Ledger House, Vancouver Island’s

only youth mental health facility.

Because of their fundraising efforts, Children’s Health Foundation nominated St. Margaret’s Junior School for

the Youth in Philanthropy award at the Association of Fundraising Professionals’ National Philanthropy Day.

We are pleased to share that the girls won the award! Congratulations!

Canadian Tire Grand Re-Opening

Thank you to Bear Mountain Resort and West

Shore's Canadian Tire for donating $392, proceeds

from their June 2, 2012 BBQ, to Children’s Health

Foundation’s Jeneece Place and Victoria Women's

Transition House. We are grateful for the support!

Par-T-Perfect

In March, Par-T-Perfect held their 2nd annual

Open House with proceeds going to Children’s

Health Foundation’s Jeneece Place. Guests

enjoyed two inflatables, face painting, balloon

animals, glitter tattoos and crafts. In two hours of

fun, Par-T-Perfect raised $400 for families.

Order of Pi

The Order of Pi was started by the UVic Engineering Students’ Society

in 1994 and has become an annual tradition. Now in its 18th year,

the Pi-Drive is a charity event that runs during Pi Week (the week

containing March 14, or 3-14). The 2012 Pi-Drive raised over $1800

for Children’s Health Foundation, and two dollars from each “pi” was

donated to the Mustard Seed Food Band. Ron Hewitt graciously took

the “hit” for Children’s Health Foundation!

Steve Drane Harley-Davidson

Steve Drane Harley-Davidson continues its fundraising efforts

for Children’s Health Foundation’s Jeneece Place. This year, they

partnered with the Vancouver Island Harley Owners Group and

launched the “A BUCK A BIKE” campaign. They hope every rider who

comes to the shop will contribute. In July, Steve Drane presented

Jeneece Edroff with a cheque for $2,000. Thank you, Steve Drane

Harley-Davidson and customers, for your ongoing support.

Mount Finlayson Madness

Is it madness to want to see how many times you can climb Mt.

Finlayson in one day? We thought so, until our friend Andy told us

about the charity event where climbers are sponsored to do just that.

Forty climbers ascended, descended and re-ascended for 12 straight

hours raising just over $1200. Talk about the ups and downs of

fundraising! Jeff Hamill had the most ascents of the day — 8 times!

BC Cruise Industry Luncheon

In August, the Cruise Industry Association of

B.C. held a luncheon in support of Jeneece

Place on board Royal Caribbean’s Rhapsody of

the Seas, while it was docked at Ogden Point.

The guests at the luncheon were greeted by

the ship’s Captain, treated to a tour of the

vessel, and addressed by Jeneece herself. The

luncheon raised more than $5000.

Italian Assistance Centre

Laughter really does make a difference, for the

soul and for kids! The Italian Assistance Centre

donated $2,500 from their annual comedy night

to Jeneece Place. Frank Spadone headlined the

night of laughs, held at the Leonardo da Vinci

Centre. Sincere thanks to Tania Conforti and

the Centre for choosing Children’s. Viva Italia!

Victoria Corvette Club

Wolf Schmitz and Don Hamilton of the Victoria Corvette Club presented

Children’s Health Foundation President & CEO Ron Hewitt with a

cheque for $2,000 at the 2012 Motorcar Gathering. We are grateful to

club members for their support.

Turn a beloved activity or hobby into a fundraiser that benefits Island kids.

How to Do It

Live meaningfully in 2013

1. Think of an activity or hobby you love — baking, scrapbooking, quilting, playing soccer, volleyball or mini-golf.

2. Turn your hobby into a fundraiser: a sports tournament, a bake or craft sale, or an “a-thon” — scrapbooking-a-thon, mini-golf-a-thon, or hiking-a-thon, like our friends at Mount Finlayson Madness.

3. Invite friends, family, and people looking to make a difference to your event. The money raised for Children’s Health Foundation will help kids and youth with special needs reach their potential.

To get started, contact Jackie Adamthwaite at Children’s Health Foundation: [email protected] or 250-519-6935 or fill out a form on our website: childrenshealthvi.org/events/plan-fundraiser

P. 16 Children mean the world to us.

Joyce Despins’s grandson Alexander was born 10 weeks prematurely. His little lungs and tiny heart were not fully developed when the two-pound, two- ounce tyke decided it was time to enter the world.

For 29 days, he stayed at the Victoria General Hospital, where caring nurses monitored him 24-hours a day, until he could pass the “car seat test:” sitting strapped in a car seat, for one hour without any As or Bs — apnea (pauses in breathing) and bradycardia (slowed heart rate).

“After he was released, someone from the Queen Alexandra Centre for Children’s Health came around to the house to keep track of his progress,” remembers Joyce, from Sayward, B.C.

Alexander received home visitations as part of the Early Intervention Program funded by Children’s Health Foundation of Vancouver Island (then, the Queen Alexandra Foundation for Children).Through the program, a nurse visited him every month until his third birthday. During these visits, Alexander was carefully observed and tested to ensure he was reaching developmental milestones. If any problem was detected, like when he developed pneumonia at 9 and 12 months, he was fast-tracked to the proper specialist.

“[The program] took a load off his mother’s mind,” says Joyce, remembering the stress her daughter faced while juggling the care of her first son, Loukas, and visits to the hospital every four hours to feed and bond with Alexander.

Thanks to the care he received, Alexander has grown into a vivacious boy of eight. He earned a

brown belt in karate; he swims competitively with Island Swimming; and he adores camping.

Grandma and grandson enjoy a good game of cards whenever Alexander visits from Victoria. They get pretty rowdy, according to the rest of the family! “Alexander has about 10 times as much energy as anyone else has,” Joyce says with a laugh. “What he lacked at birth, he has more than made up for.”

Out of appreciation for what QA did for her grandson, Joyce donates to the Foundation. “I usually donate to help children. Because it’s for kids, it’s the best,” she says passionately. “We have to keep them healthy and strong and growing.”

Taking care of community is also very important to Joyce. “We donate within the community because it’s like a big circle — you never know when you’re going to need the help.”

Giving to the Foundation is a no-brainer for Joyce: “It saved Alexander’s life. It’s pay-back time.”

As I reflect on the work of our Foundation, I appreciate more and more how we serve as a catalyst for the making of community connections. This fall especially, a few key events served as great reminders of this important role.

At our grant writing workshop in October, hosted near the Comox Valley, representatives from family serving agencies joined us from across Vancouver Island to learn about our grants and to participate in a workshop developed, with our input, by the Victoria Funders Network — first connection defined! Anita Brassard, Executive Director of Y.A.N.A. (You Are Not Alone), is one of our funding partners and on her arrival, was introduced to Craig Smith, Executive Director from the Help Fill A Dream Foundation — a second connection created. Later during the workshop, Anita introduced Craig to staff from St. Joseph’s Hospital — and a third connection occurred.

Why are these connections worth mentioning? Because a few weeks later, Help Fill a Dream donated to St. Joseph’s Hospital Foundation a much-needed transducer, an electronic fetal heart rate monitor designed to give more flexibility to birthing mothers during labor. Connections at work!

Around the same time, youth from the Comox Valley Youth Project were wrapping up their production of a video about inclusion. A year ago, they set a goal to share their perspectives by connecting with others through YouTube. A successful grant application to the Foundation provided the means to hire local videographer Zac White. Zac skillfully connected with each youth’s message, demonstrating how inclusion for persons living with a disability connects a whole

community. The result was an award-winning video that connects this group of inspiring youth to the world.

Coincidentally, another of our grantees, VOCYL (Victoria Opportunities for Community Youth Leadership) also submitted a video to the same contest with the help of a Foundation grant — and they won second place!

Connections! Whether connecting with other funders, community partners, or the children and families we serve, the Foundation continues to create opportunities that have far reaching implications.

Under crystalline snowflakes dangling from the ballroom ceiling and the cool, blue lights of a winter wonderland, over 120 darling girls in gowns and their dads enjoyed an unforgettable night together at our annual father/daughter fundraising ball. The girls adored the dancing, surprise bags and fancy slushies in light-up, long-stem glasses. Highlight of the evening: the limbo contest!

Fill the Queen Alexandra grounds with fancy cars, food, face painting and festivities for kids, and you have a summer fundraiser enjoyable by the whole family! This year’s event attracted over a thousand spectators who oohed and aahed over specialty vehicles, cheered on the kids in the mini Ferrari races and pedal cars, and appreciated live entertainment by local musicians and magicians.

Tinker Bear, Jingle Bear and Bearlor Swift were three of the beloved teddies on display at the 12th annual Bear Wear, our menagerie of dressed up bears. Public voting for the People’s Choice bear was at an all-time high, bringing in $6643.74 for children in need. The University of Victoria’s Anna Bear won the People’s Choice award, with Sysco Victoria’s Stella Star Rider Bear as Runner Up.

Stella could not believe her luck when she found out she won the bear with the same name as her — Stella Star Rider Bear, sponsored by Sysco Victoria.

The St. George and his Dragon Bear, sponsored by Leith Wheeler Investment Funds Ltd., was won by brothers Alexander and Loukas, featured on page 16, but when they heard 5-year-old Ethan loved this bear most of all, they gave it to him!

Your questions answered about our name change

Name Change Q & A

Q: Why did you change your name?

A: We needed our name and our brand to reflect what we do and where we do it.

Q: What does children’s health include?

A: Our mandate supports children’s health in a broader context: children with

special needs; child and maternal care; and healthy living, including fitness,

chronic conditions, nutrition, and mental health.

Q: What is going to happen to the Queen Alexandra Centre for Children’s

Health?

A: The Queen Alexandra Centre for Children’s Health won’t be affected. Our

name change is to avoid confusion with the Centre and to better reflect

what we do and where we do it. We continue to support the Centre, which is

operated by the Vancouver Island Health Authority (VIHA).

Q: Is there a change in the Foundation’s fundraising direction because of this

name change?

A: No — our name tells our whole story. We fundraise and support programs

and organizations that provide children’s health services all over Vancouver

Island and the Gulf Islands. These programs include Jeneece Place and our

two Child, Youth & Family Centres in Sooke and the West Shore.

Q: Are you causing confusion with B.C. Children’s Hospital Foundation?

A: The B.C. Children’s Hospital Foundation raises funds for B.C. Children’s

Hospital, a province-wide hospital. Our mandate is not to support a

particular hospital, but to support all children’s health. We support the work

of B.C. Children’s Hospital as Island kids utilize their services. We work in

partnership with B.C. Children’s Hospital Foundation and the Hospital to

benefit Island kids.

Q: What happens if I’ve left a gift in my will to the Queen Alexandra

Foundation for Children?

A: Children’s Health Foundation of Vancouver Island is the legal successor to

the Queen Alexandra Foundation for Children; therefore, gifts that recognize

Queen Alexandra Foundation or any other former name will come to us.

Those who have chosen to remember the Foundation in their wills and

estate planning will be recognized in the Queen Alexandra Legacy Circle.

Please contact Jane Bowers at 250-519-6955 if you have left a gift in your will to

the Foundation.

Yes, I would like to support the health and well-being of children and youth on the Islands

This was a question that Lydia Ross asked herself after her husband passed away. After 32 years of marriage, they had talked about updating their will, but kept putting it off. With John’s sudden death, Lydia knew what she wanted to do. Children and family were very important to her and her husband. They were grateful their children were healthy; they had seen families who weren’t so fortunate and sympathized with the struggles they faced.

In addition to leaving each of her kids a gift in her will, Lydia chose to give the remainder to Children’s Health Foundation of Vancouver Island. She knew our history of serving children for over ninety years meant a planned gift to this foundation would be carefully managed and used as she directed — half for the critical and most urgent needs of children, and half in support of Jeneece Place, the home away from home for families travelling to Victoria for their child’s medical care.

Start the conversation today about creating an enduring legacy by contacting Jane Bowers, Senior Development Officer, at 250-519-6955 or [email protected].
