Intro

I’ve chosen to do my video analysis on Kid Ink feat. Chris Brown- Show me. I have broken down the video into 8 screen shots which I found most attracting and important throughout the music video.

The opening shot highlights the image of a laid-back, wealthy young rapper. The artist in the centre of the shot, focusing all attention on him. The shot features the smoking, in his own zone, careless and oblivious to his surroundings. His clothing causes him to blend in with the sofa, the white, softness of the smoke is much bolder and so the attention of the audience is drawn towards the centre of the shot..

This shot focuses on the image the rapper is trying to create, the contrast between the black background and the white jacket makes him stand out, creating a bold and iconic image in comparison to other artists, he is also wearing dark sunglasses, attracting even more attention to himself and his dramatic white jacket. Again the artist is in the middle of the mid-shot.

This long shot emphasises the image of Chris Brown, in the centre of the shot with lines of people dancing either side of him as he dances forward towards the camera. In this shot all attention is focused on him as either side is symmetrical, drawing attention to the centre of the screen in which he is. The lighting is red from behind, however there is light shining onto Chris Brown in this shot as his shadow is behind him, causing the focus of the audience to be directed towards him.

The light in this shot is focused on the face of Kid Ink, surrounded by girls in darker lighting. This is showing us all the focus is on him, both from the viewers and the girls in the room. This also suggests he is more powerful and important. The lighting in this shot has a slightly gold undertone, symbolising his wealth. His facial expression shows he is powerful and almost in control of the room.

This shot pans upwards as if the camera is a part of the audience. This also gives the audience a feel of being a part of the crowd looking up at the artist’s, making them feel more involved. Both the artists are on the roof of a house, dancing and rapping above everyone. This and the camera angle suggests they are more powerful and important than everyone else in the shot.

The artist shows a perfect example of power, wealth and girls in this shot, an image most male artists try to create. Again the artist is in the centre of the long-shot, and the lighting is mainly focus on him. Chris Brown is also wearing a bright red jacket in contrast to the two woman, wearing black clothing, making him stand out.

The three bottles of alcohol in this shot suggests they could be advertising that company as the same bottles are shot more than once throughout the video. The lighting is also focused on the bottles and the red cups in the background are seen in many American party videos.

This is the final shot of the music video, a dog, surrounded by girls wearing stilettos , jumps onto a skateboard which rides towards the camera. The lighting is red, white and blue , coming from behind the crowd, drawing more attention to the dog, showing how wild and fun the party was. The shot then fades out into black.

Theories Carlsson: Commericial Exhibitionist: The concept

of the video is to promote the Image of Kid Ink and Chris Brown, surrounded by money, power and girls.

Goodwin: Disjuncture applies slightly, as the lyrics do match the song however they do not tell a story.

Shore: Immediate gratification is shown as both artists are very likeable and the lyrics do tell a similar story to the music video.

A section of Lyrics:Uh, so tell me what your name is, I don’t really care who you came with (no) Unless you got a couple friends look like youMy bad if my ex try to fight youRoll up soon as I roll inSecurity better get with the programToo deep, ain't know where to standSo high, ain’t nowhere to landYou remind me of something missingMisses, you got my full attention.

The lyrics show a slight link to the genre of the music video. Power, girls and money. However there is no true meaning besides that. The video comes across as a typical rapping video as most songs within the genre are all about the same thing, we also see this by the way the artist’s are portrayed throughout the music video.
