Discrimination In The Criminal Justice System

Linda Harvey, a pioneer in restorative justice in Kentucky for 18 years, will describe how the all-volunteer program that she directs, Juvenile Restorative Justice (JRJ) of Lexington,

provides services of mediation, circles, case consultation, and parent education. JRJ creates a connection and bridge with youth who are referred by the court system and middle and high schools in Fayette County.

Ed Monahan, an attorney and leader in Kentucky’s statewide public defender program, Department of Public Advocacy, will guide us through the U.S. phenomenon of “mass incarceration”

and its differential impact on racial and ethnic groups.

How Is It Not Worth It? The Impact Of Violence On TheMind, Body And Spirit

United We Stand: A Christian’s Thoughts On Religious Diversity

in Kentucky

Libby Mills, Executive Director of Restorative Justice Louisville, will help us look at community-based restorative practices in Louisville, Ky responding to juvenile crime and building connections in

our neighborhoods. Specific examples will include Family Group Conferencing and Community Accountability Boards. Short presentations on each restorative practice will be followed by participatory practice on finding the openings and creating restorative opportunities where we live.

Ginny Sprang, Executive Director of UK’s Center on Trauma and Children and a professor in the College of Medicine’s

Department of Psychiatry, will explore the impact of violence on the well-being of individuals across the lifespan, and the spiritual dimensions of victimization and recovery. Case examples will be used.(Friday only)

Colman Elridge III, Executive Assistant to Governor Beshear, will show that Kentucky has increasingly attracted businesses and families from across the world. The diversification of faiths in our

Commonwealth requires an understanding of how our Judeo-Christian heritage can and should embrace this new frontier. Religious diversity is the theme of the Council’s 2015 assembly.
