Chapter One - Learning is Fun

    The Colonial Children

    lived very different lives

    than you do, said Mr.

    Losh. They wore different

    clothes, ate different foods,

    and played very differentgames.

    I listened to every little

    detail. Mr. Losh, my fourth

    grade teacher made social

studies come alive for us.Math is my favorite subject

    but learning all about our

    history is exciting too. The

way Mr. Losh taught, it was

almost as if I were there.

    Alex, mom called.

    Yes Mama? I answered.

Have you reviewed your historynotes for Tuesdays test? Its getting

    late.

Not yet, Ill do it right now, I

said. So, I pulled out my notes and

began to study. I remember our lessonfrom class. I wouldnt say that I am

the smartest kid in my class but I like

to make As on all of my tests.

    Colonial times were hard. The

winters were bad and many people

died. As I review and review some

more, my eyes begin to close. Im so

sleepy. Just a few more facts... Just 3

more pages and then. I cant help it.

    I fall fast asleep.

Chapter Two - Merry Ole England

One day in England, my family and I were given a chance to start a new

life. We decided to travel across the Atlantic Ocean so that we would be freeto worship as we wished. My dad had also heard stories of great treasures.

He wanted to discover precious metals and make his fortune.

We had money in England. We lived in a big house in London. We even

had a butler. The tales of greater treasure in the New World made you want

to give up everything you owned to get more.

    Dad asked me what I

    thought about moving to the

colonies in the New World. I

felt scared, excited and sad to

    leave my friends.

    Mom didnt really want to

    leave but she always

supported our family so we all

    agreed we should leave our

home, family, and friends andstart a new life.

    Chapter Three - Setting Sail

Soon it was time to board the

ship. I had imagined a big ship.

After all, we were going to be

    crossing the Atlantic Ocean. When

we arrived at the harbor, I could

hardly believe my eyes. The ship

was smaller than our old church.

There were lots of other people

with plans for a new life in a new

world just like us. It was going to

    be a crowded trip.

    11/26

Not long after we set sail, I began to think that maybe this wasnt

such a good idea. We heard stories of pirates attacking ships like ours. I

was scared. Not only that but lots of people got sick and died. It

smelled like a sick graveyard. I could barely breathe.

I was tired and bored because none of my friends had come with us.

In fact, there were not many children on the ship at all. Sometimes the

ships mate would let me turn the big wheel that controlled the sails. It

    was hard work.

The captain must haveknown I was bored because

he let me go into his

    quarters and play with his

sword. I was so scared that

I would hurt myself that I

    put it down fast.

    Sometimes the waves

    would splash over the sides

of the ship and water would

pour down all over us. It

was cold and dreadful. Wesailed for four long life-

    threatening months.

    13/26

Finally, we arrived at Jamestown. It

wasnt at all how I thought it would be.

When I saw the house my dad had

arranged for us to live in, I was shocked!

It wasnt nearly as good as I imagined. Iguess I thought the colonies would be

like London only smaller. Boy, was I

wrong! There were no warm beds, no

good food, and no big houses.

    Chapter Four- ANew Life

Everything was different. I had to sleep

in the attic in a bed stuffed with straw. Itwas rough and lumpy. The attic was cold

and the wind blew through cracks in the

sides of the house. I wanted to go back to

    England.

I discover that I have to do chores. Chores! Really? I have to dochores? In England, I had a butler to do my chores. I want go home. Its

so unfair. I have to empty the chamber bucket. Gross! I also have to carry

wood and chop it. First time I tried, I cut myself. Ouch! I hoe the garden

and feed the chickens. I carry water from the river for us to use for baths,

    watering the plants and cooking.

    Mom and Dad have to

    do jobs too. They work

    very hard. Ive never ever

    seen them work so hard.

    They must enjoy their

    freedom.

    My mom is very busy.

    She cleans the house, cooks

    our food, makes our clothes

and keeps the fire going for

our heat. In the Spring, she

plants a garden for us. I

    help pull the weeds but

    Mom does most of the

    work.

My Dad is a blacksmith. He makes tools, weapons and cooking utensils

by heating iron rods and bending them into different forms. His job is hard.

He stands over a fire most of the day. He comes home dirty and tired.

Chapter Six - Time to Play

No matter how hard we work we always finda time to play. We play Toss and Tag.

Sometimes we even make working fun by

tossing wood to each other after it is chopped

    for the fire.

My favorite game is kind of like bowling. We roll a gourd or rock to knock down pieces of

    wood.

Next year when I am older, I

will go hunting with my dad.He is teaching me how to hold a

    gun and shoot it.

    Sundays are really weird. We

go to church for the whole entire

day. I thought that we came here

    to worship freely.

Dont get me wrong, I love

God but, there are tons of rules

about how we worship. We have

to sit in church and listen all day.

If we fall asleep the watchman

will tickle us with a feather to

wake us up. Its not my fault I fall

asleep, it is boring. If we laugh or

giggle or try to tell jokes, the

watchman will tap us on the head.

Its so unfair! I cant even kiss

    my own mother on Sunday.

Chapter Seven - Time to Pray

  • 8/3/2019 Keynote - I Survived Colonial Times

    20/26

But, if we look on the bright side, I dont have to make my bed. Actually,

it is against the rules to make your bed on Sunday.

I told you Sundays are weird!

School is strict. If you do any thing wrong you are embarrassed.

Once I had to wear this pointy hat all day just because I didnt say

Maam. Boy, you dont want to forget your firewood either, cause if you

do you have to sit in the coldest spot in the classroom.

Chapter Eight - Time to Learn

Sometimes we arent healthy enough to go to school.

Many of my new friends are sick and some have even died.

I worry about getting sick. Everyone is hacking and

coughing. Lots of men and women have died too. My

throat is feeling a little scratchy. I hope Im ok.

Well, it is time for bed so I will read my Bible verse and

    go to sleep.

We dont have the same paper or books like we

did back in England. We use hornbooks, which areboards with a Bible verse, our abcs and the Lords

    Prayer on them.

Alex, time to get up, mom is shaking

me. Hey, are you ok? You were talking

in your sleep. You kept saying that you

wanted to go back to England? What is

    that all about? mom asked.

Mom, I had the craziest dream! I

dreamed I was in Colonial times.

    Colonial times were so harsh.

Chapter Nine - Just a Dream

    Bonk, bonk, bonk!

    Bonk, bonk bonk!

    The alarm clock is

    shrieking!

  • 8/3/2019 Keynote - I Survived Colonial Times

    23/26

I jump out of bed to getdressed and bump my toe on

    something.

I look down and see ahornbook.

But it was just a dream.....

    or was it?
