My involvement with Liferay

•Worked @/for Dutch Open University

•OpenU: innovation project (PLE, new learning activities, focus on life long learning, master educational sciences)•yOUlearn: new VLE for the OU (focus on regular BaMa, life long learning will follow)

•Both based on Liferay

In this presentation•Effective (e-)learning?• Is technology enhanced learning effective?•How can we use learning technology to foster principles for effective instruction?

Most favorite ‘evidence-based’ ICT-facilitated learning activity?

Effective (e-)learning?

The results raise questions about the continued use of traditional lecturing as a control in research studies, and support active learning as the preferred, empirically validated teaching practice in regular classrooms.

John Hattie about technology enhanced learning

However….•Old research often used (2002 and earlier)•Not: use VLE or social media for learning•Huge differences between studies (interesting!)

Some conclusions•Web-based learning: 0,18 effect size• Interactive video methods: 0,52 effect size•Simulations: 0,33 effect size•Distance education online

the medium of instruction does not matter; it is how it is used to support instruction and facilitate learning that affects outcomes. (Hattie, 2009, p. 233)

Use of computers more effective…•Diversity in teaching strategies•Professional development ICT as teaching and learning tool•Multiple opportunities for learning•Student more in control of learning•Peer learning optimized (use computer in pairs)•Feedback optimized

What about social learning….

Introduction term social learning

Social learning today….•Collaborative learning (same goals)•Modelling• Interactive learning•Using social media for learning•Learners have control

Effective….•Collaborative learning (yes, if…)•Modelling (yes, if…)• Interactive learning (yes, if….)•Using social media for learning (difficult….)•Learners have control (mmmm….)

So….•Technology enhanced learning can be effective•The way you apply ICT, and the conditions, are a major influence on the effectiveness•Apply “fundamentals instructional design” (e.g. formative evaluation, interaction, timely feedback)

Effective learning: apply Merrill’s first principles of instruction

How can we use learning technology to foster Merrill’s first principles?
