STAIR & CO.My responsibilities included writing out descriptions for the tags for every shipment that came in and matching them up to the invoices.

I learned to identify Hepplewhite, Chippendale, and Adam furniture; to tell the difference between Staffordshire and Worcester porcelains; to appreciate the characteristics of mahogany, satin wood, and burled walnut.

PARISH-HADLEY INC.

The only person I really wanted to work for was Mrs. Parish. So one day, I decided to walk up the street and see if there was an opening . . . There is no question that you couldn’t have a better education. You can’t buy that kind of education.

Being between Mrs. Parish and Albert wasn’t always easy, yet the genius of the company was the two of them together . . . I think that left on their own, they were not as good as the sum of the two.

Mrs. Parish was a master at furniture arrangement. She could put more

furniture in a room than anyone I had every seen. She was a completely

instinctive designer.

Albert’s own rooms were well edited and special because of the way he

could mix old and new things to create stunning combinations.
